It was one of those days where Ren did not feel like doing anything in particular.
This was not an unusual feeling; in fact, it was very nearly a daily occurrence. Since returning from the field trip, Ren had been struck by a heavy sense of despondency, which usually left him unwilling to remove himself from either his bed, or from another's bed. Gabrian was stubborn, however, and usually forced them all up; in a way, he was the one who was keeping Ren from staying lethargic and pathetic.
Though he still couldn't help but feel lethargic and pathetic. It was early afternoon now, and classes had just ended, yet Ren did not want to go back to his room just yet. It felt too stuffy in there, too stifling, and outside it was breezy and warm, which made him feel better. Sometimes a bit of fresh air was all it took to make him feel slightly more his own self.
Walking across the quad, a flash of magenta caught Ren's eye, and he slowed, tilting his head curiously. There was a ghoul, sitting beneath a tree and reading a glossy magazine. He could not see what magazine it was from this angle, but the ghoul seemed engrossed in it, thick magenta hair falling over her shoulders in waves. Ren vaguely recognized her from school; after all, she had sat next to him during that rather disastrous school play, but other than realizing that she was missing half of her face due to being a doll, he really did not know much about her, not even her name.
But he was curious, so he walked over to her, then knelt down behind her, peering over her shoulder.
"Whatcha reading?"

Having been stuck in her room for a week, Mei took whatever chance she had to get out and take in some fresh air. Normally, it would have been the other way around, barely able to pry her from her dorm room..but after that long process of healing, she needed to be out..otherwise she would lose it.
Most of her classes had ended earlier, gracing her with time to do as she pleased for the rest of the day. For now, she chose to take up a spot under one of the many trees on campus and do a little..'light reading'. To anyone passing by at a distance, it would appear to be a regular magazine..but if one was to move in closer, they would they would be proven wrong. Thanks to a certain bad influence in Mei's life, she was not as modest as most ghouls in Amityville, quite the opposite really.
Flipping through each page of the magazine, she cocked her head to the side, as if to get a better look at the pictures. To her, dirty magazines looked to be like most magazines---and she didn't quite comprehend the problem with it. Honestly! They were just like all the others! Just.. with less..clothing?
Hearing a voice speak out from behind her, she glanced over her shoulder to spot a boil trying to sneak a peek at what she had been reading. "Just a magazine." She answered, holding it up for him to see, not even considering how he would react. "You look familiar.. Have we met?" They must have, she remembered those freckles..or splotches..or whatever those marks were on his skin. Oh! The boil from the Scarentine event that Natalia had introduced her to! "Er, Ren, right?"

Resting his arms on his knees, Ren tilted his head towards the ghoul, lifting a hand in greeting. "Yo!" he said lightly, and then nodded, giving her a smile. "Yep, it's Ren." It took him a moment to wrack his brain, trying to remember how he had met her before, but then it hit him:
Natalia. Natalia had been the one to introduce them, back at the Scarentine Auction. Thinking about the werelemur made his chest ache slightly, but he quickly shoved those feelings aside, instead asking "It's Mei, isn't it? I think we've met a few times, though I've never had the pleasure of officially meeting you."
Glancing down at the magazine she held up in her hands for him to see, it took Ren a moment to realize just what exactly she was reading. For a second he just blinked, his eyes widening a little in surprise. "Oh," he said, and there was the faintest hint of amusement in his voice, his eyes sliding from the magazine over to the ghoul. It was unexpected that she would be so open over reading...er, those sorts, but at the same time...it was refreshing. Mei seemed a very...blunt sort of ghoul.
Shifting positions, Ren took a seat beside her, hoping he wasn't intruding as he crossed his legs and rested his elbow on his knee, his chin in his hand. "So, Mei," he said lightly. "Tell me; do you always read, er...those sorts of magazines?"

Score! She was right! Looks like she wouldn't have to play a guessing game this time around thankfully! Catching a small appearance of discomfort in the boil, she would have questioned him on it, but he appeared to quickly recover from whatever it was. "Bingo~" Raising her hand, she pointed towards herself. "Mei-Xiu, but Mei is what I normally go by." Bringing her hand over her shoulder, she offered a small hand shake to Ren. "Nice to meet you officially meet you as well."
Not even batting an eyelash as the boil looked over the magazine, she placed it down on the ground beside herself when he had finished examining it. For now, she would make small/long talk with the gryphon boil, as she had not yet had the chance to properly speak with him until now.
"Hm?" Turning her attention to him as he began. Sorts of magazines? Why did people always ask that? "Eh? I didn't always, but my older sister, Fell said that I should be more open minded and read these." Shrugging, she stretched out her legs in front of her, hearing one of her joints click at the motion. "Don't all students read these?"

He took Mei-Xiu's much smaller and more delicate hand in his, shaking it lightly and offering the ghoul a smile. If he recalled correctly, she was a very...strongly opinionated type, if what he had seen so far were any indication. Ren's view of her was a bit hazy, seeing as how he was not completely familiar with the ghoul, but she had made herself out so far to be pretty confident in herself - a bonus in Ren's book.
He glanced down at the magazine, Mei having put it beside her as she shifted positions. There was no mistaking the starkly colored cover, the somewhat-less-than-modestly-attired female sprawled seductively across the page, eyes half lidded.
"You have an older sister, do you?" Ren asked, tilting his head curiously. "What's she like, if you don't mind me asking?" His eyes fluttered briefly, amusement clearly evident in his voice as he added "And yes, I'm sure a lot of them do. Just not so...openly, I suppose, would be the right term.
"But don't get me wrong," Ren continued, waving a hand airily. "I like a ghoul who doesn't care what others think. If you wanna read those out here, then hell, go for it. More power to you."
He was already beginning to like Mei; from her calm, slightly blunt nature to her casual disregard for things that might have seemed unnatural. It was refreshing, really, to see such a ghoul.

Smiling as he shook her hand, she propped herself up against the tree, watching as he glanced back at the magazine for a second time. "Hm? Oh, yeah. I have many actually..but the one I was talking about is more of sworn sister, rather than an actual sister. Her name is Fell." How to describe her..that was something she had never had the task of preforming before.
"Uhh, well, my father calls her and under dressed bi---er, well. He just considers her indecent, and a bad influence on me. I don't know why. She is most interesting." Maybe a little too interesting, as some of the ghouls habits had already worn off onto the doll. Not that it helped, what with her convincing her it was a good thing. Oh well.
Snickering to herself, she shook her head. "Why though? If people already know they read it, what's the point of hiding it? Its kind of silly, don't you think? Besides, I don't see a problem with it." Grinning as at his response, she was a little taken aback by his reaction to the whole thing. "Heh heh, really? Well, that's cool by me then." She nodded.
"So what brings you all the way out here anyways? Going for a stroll, now that classes are done for the day?"

Ren couldn't help the snort of laughter that escaped at what Mei had refrained (barely) from saying. It was so like his own parents description of himself that it made him amused, and he rested his chin in his palm, shaking his head.
"Fell seems like a delightful sort," he said, and grinned. "I must admit, I like the ghouls who don't care what others think. It's much more entertaining to me to meet the ones who would rather do what they want than the ones who just try and impress everyone." Ren gave a noncommittal shrug, tilting his head back to look up at the sky. "Why try and pretend to be something you're not, right?"
He closed his eyes briefly, just breathing in the gentle afternoon air and then he moved his gaze back to Mei, a grin spreading across his face. "Exactly," he said, and nodded, raising his hands in a who, me? gesture of innocence. "Why hide something when you already know what it is and what people believe it to be?"
Reclining back on his hands, Ren stretched out his legs, crossing one over the other. "No particular reason," he said. "I was going to go visit Gabrian - my best friend - but he's chillin' with his ghoulfriend, and my ghoulfriend is working on homework and told me not to bother her when she's concentrating." Ren gave a mildly sheepish grin. "I'm not that distracting, but apparently she couldn't do her homework with me around, so she kicked me out."
Shaking his head, he slanted a curious look towards Mei. "What about you? Doing anything besides reading?"

"She is. She's also really fun to be around. We can get into so much trouble." Smiling at the thought, she stared off into nothing, recalling the good old times that she had spent with Fell. Oh how she loved those days. She missed those days.. It seemed like forever since she had last seen her. Snapping out of her daze, the doll replied with a simple nod in response to his words. "Really? I can see you and I becoming fast friends then, 'cause I never try to impress." Snickering to herself, the doll folded her arms and nodded again. "Right!"
"For sure. Best to just leave it out in the open. Besides, it would be worse for someone to come across it when your hiding it." She shrugged. "Oh well, to each his own I guess."
"Gabrian? Was he the one who dragged you off at the auctions? The tall guy with the horns?" She hadn't exactly met everyone at the school yet, so she was a little unsure of who his and Gabrian's girlfriends were. "Heh heh. I can imagine." She teased, holding back any laughter that attempted to escape.
"Eh, nothing really. Ever since the trip, I've been trying to take it easy, since I didn't exactly come back in the best condition.. I mainly just came outside to get some fresh air for once."

A smile crossed Ren's face. "Trouble, eh?" he said, and grinned, running a hand through his already messy hair. "I know how that goes. Not the whole sister thing, since my sister and I,er...don't really get along, but my friends and I tend to get into a bit of mischief every now and then."
He gave Mei a teasing wink. The ghoul was just the kind of person with whom he could see himself being good friends with. Presumptuous, perhaps, but her blunt, un-shy attitude was pleasant and refreshing. Not nearly as...er, free as Natalia, perhaps, but carefree, fun, and uncaring about what the rest of the student body thought. It was really quite refreshing, and slightly entertaining.
"People spend more time trying to hide things that they forget it looks worse," Ren agreed, shaking his head in agreement. "Lay it out all in the open, right?"
Her comment about the nix made Ren laugh out loud. "Ah, yeah," he said, a wide, pleased smile breaking out. "That's Gabrian, all right. He's my best friend, and dating LW, my other best friend. I don't know if you know my ghoulfriend, Alessa? She's a nagual; turns into a rabbit."
Thinking of his three favorite people made Ren feel more comfortable, more relaxed. His eyes flickered back to Mei, his expression turning more serious. "Yeah," he said quietly, tail switching absently in the grass. "I didn't...really come back in the best condition either."
Except he didn't want to think about that. Ren closed his eyes briefly. "The fresh air is nice, isn't it?"

"That's a shame," she said "That you don't get along with your sister." It wasn't her place to inquire about his personal life, so she refrained from bringing it any further than this. "Heh heh. That sounds like fun. Getting into trouble can be loads of fun, but the consequences have me re-thinking that sometimes." She could go on an on about all the crap her and Fell got into, but she knew, she would never stop talking if she did. The list went on and on.
"Right." Nodding in agreement, it was hard to imagine people being so open about all of their habits. "Well.." She sighed. "Maybe its not so wise to let people know all of their habits. There's some pretty odd people out there." Not that she was one to speak about oddity.
"Sounds like a good group." She noted. "I feel I've made more enemies than friends lately. I need to change that, especially after everything that has happened." Tapping a finger against her cheek in thought, the only rabbit she recalled was the ghoul in her group for the Christmas town raid. "I think..I may have met her already." Oh yeah. She met her, and tormented her by lifting her by the ears to cuddle. What could she say though? She was adorable in that form!
Snapping out of thought, her gaze wandered over to him as he spoke. "Did you.." She mauled over the right words for this kind of subject, but found no easy way of talking of it. So she didn't try. "Did you die as well?"
It was a touchy subject for many, especially the ones that ended up with the s**t end. Avoiding the subject wouldn't bother her one bit. "It is. I need to come out here more often."

Ren gave a casual shrug, resting back on his hands. His relationship with his sister was strained, at best, since Medieval had long since decided to conform to their parents ways. But at the very least she was not completely gone; and perhaps one day they would be able to mend what they had broken.
Or maybe not. Whatever the case, Ren still loved his sister. He did not, however, still love his parents, but that was another story entirely.
"Depends on what those consequences are," he said teasingly to Mei, his eyes twinkling innocently. "After all, maybe the consequences are just as much fun as the mischief that got you there in the first place." A pause. "Or maybe that wouldn't make them consequences, I'm not sure. Or you could wind up like we did after our truth or dare game a few weeks into school - detention, fighting man eating washing machines."
"And yes," he added, his mind going back to his three best friends. "They are a very good group."
Ren's eyes flickered towards Mei, tilting his head. He could possibly see why she would make enemies; after all, that bluntness about her could potentially be a bad thing, and she seemed quite confident in herself, which could also come off the wrong way, but at the same time Ren still found her quite pleasant to be around.
"If it helps any, I don't think I'll be your enemy," he said lightly, then lapsed into silence at her question, reaching a hand up to rub at the back of his neck. "....yeah," he answered after a long moment, nodding slowly. "Yeah, I did. And lemme tell you, it...wasn't fun."
Ren gave a small shrug, his shoulders rising and falling as he gave Mei a rueful smile. "I mean, getting stabbed and disappearing in front of your ghoulfriend and best friend isn't exactly a good thing, y'know?"

His family was definitely a 'leave it be' situation. Though, it made her curious as to why he and his family had such a poor relationship. Again, it wasn't her place to inquire. Leave it be, Mei. Leave it be. She told herself. Straightening up against the tree, she felt a small tickle on her forearm, realizing a small black insect of some sort was crawling along it. Shuddering from the memory of the abandoned school and the insect infestation problem, she lightly pushed the bug off her arm. Never again, did she want any sort of insect near her.
"Hm? How do you mean?" How could the consequences of ones poor actions be fun? If anything, Mei tried her best to avoid facing her consequences if possible. Most of the time, there was nothing fun about them. As he went on, her brow furrowed, her mind trying to grip the idea of what all he was saying. "Whoa..hold on..All that happened after one truth or dare game?" luckily, Mei had gone a whole year without ending up in detention. She did, however, have some pretty close calls. If anything, this only made her wary of the idea.
Smiling, she returned her gaze, nodding lightly. "It does. Well, that's one plus friend for me!" Her smile stretched into a grin. "And I'll return the favor." She added. Her smile faded a little as he confirmed her thoughts. "Wow." Was all she could manage to say at the moment, allowing him to continue. "Ouch.." She winced. "That's rough..I fell down chasm, so my death wasn't as gruesome as yours, but I fell in front of a friend of mine." Frowning, she pondered on what else might have happened on the island, after she had died.
Thinking a moment, she turned to him, curious if he might have.. "Did..do you remember seeing anything--after you died? Before you were brought back to the school?" Maybe he, and others, also saw the island filled with children. That creepy vision still haunted her dreams.
