Ability: Levitate

For the Artist
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 0.21 lbs
Hair Color: Purple
Eye Color: Red
Glasses/Contact Lenses: No, but angular eyes like this and this. Bright red sclera with black irises like this...? Unless it would require contact lenses to have them that way.
Skin Color: Purple
Face Shape: ...Pentagon-ish?
Other Features: Sharp eyes, angular; spiky hair, partial Gengar evolution.
Would something of a combination between
him: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
and him: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]
be possible? Maybe to look something like this? The first was supposed to be him as a Haunter pokemorph (with Gengar features such as red eyes and sharp teeth), but he's too much like a pokemon. The second is him as a human. I'd really appreciate it if the artist could somehow combine elements from both (excluding the Gengar features and maybe replacing them with his human features, like giving him his nose and brown eyes). The human form dressed as a Haunter gijinka would be perfect, especially if he could still maintain some of his trademark clothes like his black long coat and his baggy blue jeans.

Clothing Style: Trench coat with red 'R's and long, baggy jeans.

Shadow/Shawn's Reference Picture Gallery

About the Character
Personality:

Independant (+) : This teen has always been self-reliant due to not having grown up with parents. He also tends to seem more mature than most teenagers his age due to not aging physically as a ghost-type, meaning he could be hundreds of years older than he appears. Shadow is very street-smart and knows how to think on his feet, so to speak. Others tend to look to him for advice on what to do in a situation more than he looks to others. His stubbornness might have something to do with that as well.

Cynical (-) : Shadow is suspicious and mistrusting of most people by nature. This has to do with how he was brought up (or raised himself, pretty much) and the fact that he was abandoned by his father at a young age while his mother was poisoned by a Muk's footprint. However, that isn't to say he has lost his faith in (poke?)humanity altogether. If you open up to him enough, you might earn enough of his trust to get him to open up in return.

Caring (+) : Although Shadow seems to be outwardly distant, cold, and aloof, he will always take the time to listen to others. He tends to be very empathetic and sympathetic due to his considerate nature and is often very thoughtful of others' circumstances, doing what he can to help them out. His sincerity and kindness isn't always blatantly obvious, however, and it would take a little time of getting to know him for one to recognize said intentions in his actions. He is not especially demonstrative of his kindness, nor is he used to outwardly putting on displays of affection. His caring of others is more prominent in the little things he does.

Sarcastic (-) : This Haunter has a definite attitude. He occasionally talks back to his elders and is often sarcastic in his responses, though he means no intentional disrespect, being something of a smart aleck. He also tends to use this tactic when he's afraid or otherwise distressed. In this way, it seems to be something of a defense mechanism for him to find some dark humor in his panic or terror. He believes it gives him (and sometimes those he's being sarcastic to) the feeling that everything will be alright and that the fact that he's able to joke in such tense situations is proof of that.

Determined (+) : This teen is the kind that is motivated and focused on his goals. Once he sets out to do something, he will do anything in his power to see it through to the end. He's very persistent and will endure whatever obstacles he needs to to persevere. He's very good at keeping his eyes on the prize and not getting side-tracked.

Reckless (-) : Hand in hand with his determination is Shadow's recklessness. This teen is a daredevil and afraid of almost nothing any longer (as opposed to when he was younger and afraid of everything. Nightmares galore). He has the ability to overcome whatever fears bother him, which is not necessarily a good thing when his fears are meant to keep him from doing foolish and stupid things. This trait of recklessness seems to have resulted from a combination of his boredom and his inability as a ghost pokemon to die.

Helpful (+) : This Haunter likes working with others any chance he can get, and if he can help them out by doing it, all the better. He tends to be very protective and cooperative, sometimes even acting as a guardian or a big brother for younger pokehumans and watching over others in their sleep. He can be secretly kind and helpful such as when he uses Hypnosis to help people get some rest if they have trouble, or sometimes eat their dreams in their sleep when they have nightmares.

Insecure (-) : A couple of Shadow's biggest flaws are his self-loathing and his tendency to brood on the past, which are interlinked with each other. His predominant nature seems to be gloomy, and as he isolates himself from others often, he also seems to be aloof or distant. He actually loves company; it's just that he's so insecure about his appearance and scaring people off with it that he doesn't have the will to try to reach out to others on his own too often. Unless, of course, they need his help.

Loyal (+): Above all, Shadow tries to do what he believes is right. He has a very strong sense of what is right and wrong and will always listen to his conscience. He is also very devoted, committed, and loyal to his friends, and according to his morals, he will never turn on them for any reason. If you make a friend of Shadow, you'll have made a friend for life. He trusts his friends and would do almost anything for them. He will defend them with all his heart and soul, get back at people who have wronged them, and will go to the ends of the Earth for their sakes. That's not to say his never disagrees or fights with his friends, but he thinks that one of the main things about being friends is being honest, so he'd prefer to tell the truth to someone rather than be politely agreeable. Friends are especially important to Shadow because of how insecure he is and how much he worries he'll scare people off with his looks. That's right; think Casper, only maybe not quite as friendly. He's not so trusting of people at first, but once you have his trust, his bond of friendship will be hard to shake.

Pessimist (-) : Another of Shadow's domineering traits is his negativity and his pessimism. He tends to be, as many teenagers are, very angsty, believing that no one else knows what he's gone through and won't willingly open up to others with his story because he doesn't want them to bother with it or doesn't believe they'll understand. Often times he's so caught up in his own self-pity that he won't listen to anyone else. However, as long as there are others around to just be by his side, he isn't able to think such negative thoughts for long.

Hobbies: Looking after others (especially younger ones), conversing (mostly listening to others), practicing his techniques

Dislikes:
Mirrors - Since he hates looking at himself with self-disgust and has a certain loathing for his appearance.

Ghosts - Despite being part ghost himself, Shadow doesn't trust them. At all. He knows their type best and he knows what they're capable of, which is why he dislikes them as well as himself.

Inconsideration/Ill Will Towards Others - He will not abide it from anyone. He really cares about his fellow pokehumans and will not stand to see them take advantage of one another. He will do whatever he must to stop this.

Likes:
Darkness - He can hide his appearance in said darkness and doesn't have to worry about how others perceive him or how he perceives himself. He feels at home in the dark, especially because he can see in it better than many others can. And those others like him that can are often as 'scary-looking' as he is, so he doesn't have to worry much about frightening them off. He can be alone in his thoughts to think, though occasionally it gets lonely, so it never hurts to have a few friends around with him.

Psychics - He feels safer around them and connected in the sense that they usually seem wiser than most and know what they're doing. They're also usually very understanding in his opinion and he admires their talents, such as their telekinesis. He strives to have the mental concentration and focus that they do.

Optimism and Positive-Thinkers - He likes those who can see the brighter side of things and admires them for it since he himself has trouble doing so. Always stuck in the past, Shadow admires and respects those who can look to the future and envision it as a happier one - especially those who can back up their visions.

Optional Just-for-Fun Stuff
Filling this out with as much detail one can muster is a plus!

Educational Background: Homeschooled for a time; probably not much more than a middle school education, but street smart enough to survive.

Intelligence Level: Clever enough to think on his feet, but not so much in planning ahead. What he lacks in book smarts he makes up for in survival instincts, gut feelings, and street smarts.

Physical/Mental Condition: Physically fit due to running around alot through the streets of the city. However, since he mostly lives off scraps, he isn't very healthy. His stature can only be described as abnormally skinny. However, since he's part ghost, he can't starve. Also, since he tries to use his pokemon techniques as rarely as possible due to the fact that they make him feel more like a freak than ever, he is not experienced in their use and they often cost him a great deal of energy and mental concentration. Sometimes it even physically pains him to use his attacks.

Mentally, this teen is sharp, if reckless. He doesn't think much of taking risks and getting into trouble because he's pretty used to getting himself out of tight situations whether he got himself into them or not. The ghost part of his mind almost seems to have a separate conscious of its own at times, scrambling his thoughts so that he cannot always rationally think things through. At times his thought process seems almost intangible as his physical ghost appearance. Though he tries very hard to concentrate on things like keeping a tangible form, his ghost mentality likes to take over at inconvenient times, scrambling his thought process further and making it difficult for him to think. He worries that the ghost part of his brain is eating away at his rational mind (being the opposite of) and that this is a possible reason why he can't recall much of his childhood.

Learning Experiences: Since he's pretty much lived on his own for most of his life, Shadow has gained most of his knowledge from trial and error. He learns from his own experiences and pasts mistakes rather than warnings from others or the written words because he isn't so trusting of anyone besides himself.

Character's short-term goals in life: To protect others to the best of his abilities in order to make his abominable existence worth while.

Character's long-term goals in life: To redeem himself for being the monster that he is and to find out a purpose for his existence. As a ghost, he doesn't believe he should be alive.

How does Character see himself/herself? He absolutely loathes himself. He doesn't think that a freak of nature like him should be allowed to exist, but as he can't kill himself, he can only try to make the best of his existence by helping others.

How does Character believe he/she is perceived by others? He believes he scares people with his looks and frightens them; also due to being part ghost and the reputations ghosts have. He doesn't blame people for fearing him, either.

Does the character seem ruled by emotion or logic or some combination thereof? He is very grounded and a realist in the facts of life, which may feed into his pessimism. However, his sympathetic and empathetic emotions towards others often drive him to do things that would go against his logic otherwise, such as taking unnecessary risks. He is ruled by emotions when it comes to others, but is very logically-grounded otherwise.

What would most embarass this character? Being seen as a freak without his clothes (such as the fact that he has no wrists). Embarrassment and other emotions tend to trigger a certain state of intangibility through a disruption of his mental concentration, which he tries very hard to avoid. Thus, he make a conscious effort not to let anything emotionally bother him in order to mentally concentrate on remaining tangible in physical form.

Introvert or Extrovert? Definite introvert.

How will the character deal with anger? He will outright express it by attacking walls and other inanimate objects if not the people he believes are the cause of his anger.

--------------------------------------With sadness? Shadow is most often sad; if not for himself, than for the hardships of others. He tends to mope and brood quietly by himself when upset or distraught.

--------------------------------------With conflict? He will do his best to defuse growing tension or a fight and will not engage in attack if possible. However, while he's not likely to be the one to initiate a fight, he will finish it if he needs to; most often in the least violent way possible, such as with a Lick (paralysis) attack or a Hypnosis (sleep) attack. He does not like to fight and especially does not like to use his pokemon techniques because they make him feel more like a freak and take a lot of concentration for him to use.

--------------------------------------With change? He doesn't like it, but he can adapt to a change in circumstances very quickly. As previously stated, he is quick to think on his feet. Change is not something he willingly or easily accepts, however. This is further supported by the fact that he broods on the past and does not like to let things go.

--------------------------------------With loss? Shadow has already dealt with his fair share of loss in his life. He tries to force himself to move on logically, knowing there is little point in dwelling in the past, but he still tends, at times, to be consumed by his negative emotions, memories, and regret. He broods often.

What does the character want out of life? TO DIE. XD No, really, he wants to find a purpose for living. He's a GHOST. Likely he'll live forever. Then again, they do say that ghosts have unfinished business and it's common speculation that ghosts can't remember their past lives. Perhaps there was some unfinished business he still had in his past life...? Something to do with a girl still pining over him...?

What would the character like to change in his/her life? Himself. His appearance, his type, who he is both personality-wise and physically. He can't stand what he is.

What motivates this character? The need to find a higher reason for living. He wants to know why he - and ghosts in general - exist. He has a great deal of compassion for others, especially those that can somehow find it in their hearts and minds to accept him. He is motivated to live out his life helping them the best he can while searching for a reason for his existence.

What frightens this character? Shadow wants to find a purpose for his existance as a ghost. He believes there is such a reason, but that he cannot recall it. Sometimes it seems just out of reach, but his scrambled ghost mentality makes it difficult to figure it out.

Aside from worrying that all of his proper sanity will eventually be eaten away by his ghost pokemon consciousness, Shadow's greatest fear is to lose the ability to become tangible, causing him to sink into the ground, the Earth, and possibly end up in the very mantle of the Earth's core. He has had a few close calls with this, but psychic-types have usually come to his rescue in time. This is one reason he fears being unconscious and does not sleep due to the fact that he cannot concentrate on remaining tangible while unconscious. (Please see "Batman Beyond: Episode 31 'Sneak Peek'" to get a good idea of what I'm talking about. No, I swear I did not get the idea from there; I just discovered a very similar concept. What Bruce Wayne says at the end of the episode about the fate of the intangible man is pretty much what Shadow fears will happen to him.)

Other:
Pokemon attacks are:
- Lick
- Hypnosis
- Dream Eater
- Shadow Ball

~ If he had a voice, it would be that of Jason Marsden.
~ His main theme song is "In the Shadows" by The Rasmus.
~ Others include:
"Hero" by All Insane Kids
"Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day
"Leave Out All the Rest" by Linkin Park
"Shadow of the Day" by Linkin Park
"What I've Done" by Linkin Park
"Breaking the Habit" by Linkin Park.

Hmm...Shadow has two forms - human and pokemorph. I guess if his pokemorph form isn't human enough for this shop, then I may have to make him into more of a gijinka by combining his pokemon aspects with his human self...

Like contact lenses. Can't have 'natural' pokemon eyes, huh?

Reversed gears more towards the typical Gijinka. Markings, tail, ears, horns, etc. Depends on what the other form looks like. There are some, like Kyrea, who are more anthro. Quite a few with their Pokemon feet and Pokemon skin color.

You can probably have natural Pokemon eyes. Bala, the Gengar, has glowing yellow eyes. And one of the meta characters doesn't have an inch of white.

Thank you very much for the explanation! That's really helpful.

So in that case, would something of a combination between
him: [x] [x] [x] [x]
and him: [x] [x] [x] [x] [x] [x]
be possible?

Yup. So long as he doesn't look, literally, like a shadow. Could even change his skin color to purple, I'm sure. Bala has a much darker grey than Xero, who has the Mewtwo white. So snt really a limit, so long as they DO have human bodies. Ish. I know my Safira is more a mermaid than anything. But, like I said, some still retained their Pokemon bottom halves.

Welcome. <3

I find this haunter adorable. My favorite thing has to be that he is pessimistic but loves to be surrounded by optimistic individuals. For whatever reason that just makes me smile.

Also, his fear of mirrors makes me laugh, and that you compare him to "Casper" the not as friendly ghost. Priceless.

It is a little confusing that you say he doesn't trust people, has a natural suspicion of things yet is very loyal. Is this because he is trying to prove that he is not one of those un-trustworthy people or is he trying to learn how to trust? It just seems hard to believe that someone who doesn't know how to trust freely has can be very very loyal to an individual without reason or at least a little skepticism. Well, not too hard to believed. But at least give a level at which the friendship would have to be would be a good thing to add. How often does he let people get close enough to be loyal to them.

Other than that, spot on.

Thanks for the compliments, Sniper. They really mean a lot. I'm very glad you like him. =)

What I meant by his being loyal is that once he finally trusts someone, he will be ever-loyal to them. He isn't loyal to people right off the bat due to his cynicism and suspicious nature. There aren't too many people who he trusts, so there aren't too many people that he's absolutely devoted/loyal to. The level of friendship you were saying he might need to have in order to be loyal to them would probably have to be pretty high. Sorry, I should have put that in somewhere. Does that clear things up?

Also as an off-note, added a few things in the optional section, like his greatest fear (which I don't know how I forgot to put before, since it's kind of a big thing with him), his imagined voice actor, and theme song(s).

That did clear it up. :3

(I love the batman beyond series. Sad it was taken off the air)

-What exactly do you mean by "Ghost Pokemon Conscious"? Alter ego? I haven't read anything previously that hinted to him struggling with morals or some mentally unstable issues. This seems like something that would seriously hinder his social life. Not all ghost pokemon are evil, so this is unclear.

-Why does he have a problem with loosing the ability to become tangible? Normal ghost pokemon are not tangible to begin with and have no problem with gravity. They simply float about. Does this have something to do with possible mental issues listed above? Does he think about it so much he just begins to float downward on his own without being aware of his own actions? A problem he had with becoming a poke-hume somehow? There is another ghost pokemon in this shop that doesn't have this problem so it's not a regular thing for them to have.

Great, thanks.

Yeah, it was a good series. XD All the episodes can be found online, though, so it's not so bad. The crossovers between The Zeta Project and the Justice League Unlimited were awesome.

- Um, I guess that part wasn't really necessary, especially not for this shop, but since this character was originally a human turned pokemorph (or pokehuman in this case) I kind of thought there might be a part of his ghost DNA that kind of had a life of its own in his mind. I didn't find out until later that these pets were supposed to be pokemon turned into pokehumans, not the other way around. The ghost mind consciousness thing was more inspired by the show Danny Phantom with how Danny could separate himself into two separate beings, even though they were both part of who he was. But that's not really relevant to the pokemon world and it's not crucial to Shawn's character, so I really don't mind taking that out if you want me to.

- Again, this was mostly an issue stemming from the original idea that he was human and got changed into part pokemon rather than pokemon changed into part human. I guess in this case he might just not be used to having a tangible body as a pokehuman (since, like you said, ghost pokemon aren't tangible to begin with) and since he's had to get used to gravity as a pokehuman, it messes with his sense of tangibility. Perhaps his ability to Levitate as a pokemon originally was messed up or something when he changed into a pokehuman. He didn't have to deal with gravity then, but he has to now with a tangible, pokehuman body. Is that okay, or would you like me to take out that part altogether?

(( I should look into this. It's nostalgia for me... LoL And I haven't seen Danny Phantom in a while... is that still running new epps? ))

-If you would like to have the dark ego be an issue, you'd have to work that in with his personality. It's an understandable issue, but you need a back-story for it. He was born that way, Developed it somehow, or maybe something happened after his transformation and this dark ego is fairly recent. In any case it needs explanation if you want to use it. If not, it is something you can cut.

-I guess this would go along with the idea above. Something he is new to, it makes sense. It just needs an explanation as to why he is having the problem. Why would gravity affect him, or seem to affect him, when he goes into his 'ghost mode'? What triggered this phobia... etc. It just needs to be believable. It's a reasonable fear for someone who can pass through walls, but because there is another ghost pokemon that doesn't have this problem there needs to be more explanation than just his transformation.

((Heh, I guess I'm a little silly for finding similarities in fictional series that don't really have much to do with each other, but I still find it fun. This is the Fenton Ghost Catcher shown in episodes "What You Want", "Identity Crisis", and most notably, "The Ultimate Enemy", in which Danny's main protagonist was his ghost/future self. Sadly no, the show ended a while ago after the third season. XD Like Batman, though, you can find all the episodes online! Great ending.))

- The way they described the ghost DNA being fused with Danny's own in the Danny Phantom series was how I imagined it might have been for a person fused with ghost pokemon DNA in a pokemorph rp setting, so I had previously attempted to incorporate similar consequences. Of course in this shop, that's not the case, so that doesn't really apply. I can't really see how I could properly incorporate it with a good reason in this shop's setting, so I think I'll just cut it if that's alright with you. *makes a note to edit it out of the first couple posts asap*

- This one is a little more crucial to his personality, so I'm not so keen on cutting this. Hmm... I'm assuming because you mention the other ghost pokemon, all pokemon are expected to have made the change in the same way, so a variation in the transformation cannot be a possible explanation. Um...perhaps...as a pokehuman, he is more aware of his existence as a living being than he was as a ghost pokemon and thus prefers to remain as 'human' and tangible as possible to remember this and keep it in mind. This would mean staying as tangible as he can for most of the time, but since he's not used to it, this would take some getting used to.

Would it be safe to say that in order to not be affected by gravity when a ghost pokemon is levitating or intangible, it has to be fully willing and consciously allowing himself to be intangible? I would think most other ghost pokemon/pokehumans would have no problem with this since I'm sure most would be completely fine with phasing through things and becoming intangible at will.

But for Shadow, since he gained a new body, he's terribly afraid to lose the mentality that he does, in fact, exist as something more than a mere ghost. This would make him determined to remain tangible as often as possible. But perhaps emotional changes and such trigger only partial tangibility, occasionally causing him to be just intangible enough to pass through stuff, but tangible enough for gravity to work on him. Would...that work?
