Afraid and lost at the age of 3 she lived in the woods for fear of other kids making fun of her wings. While in the forest, a dieing Kitsune felt her angelic healing presence and came to her for her help, but Mayoi couldn't save her. But what she did do was place the soul of the Kitsune into her own, and the presence of the Kitsune survived. Mayoi and the Kitsune became one, and so her angel blood was tainted, every full moon she would turn into a winged Kitsune. The Kitsune's powers allowed Mayoi to conceal her wings so she appears human, and so she was able to walk among them undisturbed. When Mayoi finally make it back to the Angel realm, she wasn't allowed back in because she wasn't an angel anymore, and was banished to walk the world of humans. But during this time, the higher anarchy found out of her presence and disapproved of her existence, and sent an assassin to kill her, so Mayoi is forever on the run for her life. Even though she is an angel, the Kitsune blood makes her more of a wily, free-lance and more of a mutual character, but when she picks a side she fights bloody and fierce.
