Beyond the Uunule Noyi Desert in the Great Plains.
PostPosted: Tue May 03, 2011 6:34 pm

The pale mare had journeyed long and hard across the extensive desert. It was an experience she hadn't properly prepared for and before she was half-way across she had thought she would die on the sands. But she had crossed, miraculously, and saw plains stretching as far as she could see.

She was concerned about a bath and a drink, so set off to look for a water source. It crossed her mind momentarily that water might mean a chance meeting for what she was seeking, considering all her chance encounters of the past had revolved around the liquid of life--she mentally cringed at the recollections that sprang forth. Yes, she would either find someone who knew a medicine horse or get lucky and meet them at the water's edge.

----

After a long drink and a quick dip in a nearby river, she hadn't seen hide, hair, or feather of another Soquili, but she met a lovely family of prairie dogs. They were able to tell her about the weather, their aliments they had suffered, and a description of a mare that healed uncle what's-his-name a few months ago. She had thanked them for their time before parting company to look for a large (possible exaggeration in size) alicorn.

Her search continued as she journeyed, speaking with a few other animals of the plains in hopes of a more recent encounter or a possible location to the elusive medicine alicorn.

She was enjoying the shade of a cottonwood tree, one of the few that dotted the plains, when a grasshopper sparrow began to chatter at an alarming rate. Something unfamiliar had entered the family's territory. At first, the alicorn couldn't tell what it was the sparrows were warning about, but Felicity grabbed her head and turned it in the right direction.

At first she hadn't seen anything in the tall plain grass. It was rippling in the breeze like normal, except a patch that seemed to stand defiant against the wind. But that was no grass. She finally noted it was a pale Soquili--she blended so well she seem a mirage.

But the sparrow was flying circles now above her head, warning her against harming their nest. The other Soquili lifted her head and seemed to speak to the excited bird, who finally alighted on her head.

The alicorn was finally curious as the male seemed to point in her direction with his wing as it answered the pale one's inquiry. Well, it wasn't unusual for other creatures to seek her for healing. And other Soquili wasn't unheard of, but rare. This one didn't seemed to be ailing, save an old scar over one eyes that could be softened. Maybe she was here for a love one?

The the mare locked eyes with her and she saw the true injury which couldn't be healed by horn or herbs. She felt her ferret companion climb down as the mare started to walk towards them, careful not to harm the grasshopper sparrow's nest.

Well the other animals she had spoken to hadn't been exaggerating about the alicorn's size. She was indeed bulkier than normal and she was taller than the pompous Wild Wind. She noted the streaks of silver and the herbs entwined in her hair, a sign of her age and hopefully skill. Hope swelled in her heart that she was on the right path to learn medicine.

But now that the moment was before her, she felt her confidence wane. She had always been a self-conscious mare, even as a filly. And even though she was far from familiar territory by her own accord, she was unsure it had been a wise decision.

What if this alicorn refused her because she was a simple regular? What if she wasn't really a medicine horse? What if she didn't want to pass on her skill? Vidia stopped in her tracks as the thoughts of doubt plagued her.

"I think she's lost her nerve," Felicity piped up to her bonded. "She had this intense, determined look, but it's clouded over with doubt now."

"She is spiritually broken. I cannot heal problems of the spirit with herbs. You know that."

"Ah, but you know how to heal just that, Muirgen, remember?"

Yes, indeed the alicorn had done just that for the ferret at her hooves, not to mention her own troubled past.

"Well, if she won't move then I'll go to her," Muirgen stated as she flicked her tail like a final decision.

She was doing a closer inspection of the mare before her as she leisurely walked closer. It looked as though the younger mare had tried to catch others' eyes with the feathers and noisy looking bangles around her pasturns. Some of the feathers did seem to have a personal touch to them, but the others? It was a bit too over the top for the older mare's taste.

"Welcome to Equa Tlogesi. I am Muirgen la Anise, local medicine horse. And this is my bonded, Felicity. What is it that you seek?"

The voice of the alicorn snapped her out of her self-reflection and doubt. She wasn't quite able to lift her head all the way up as she ambled closer to Muirgen. "I am Vidia from the Soquili lands and I wish to learn the ways of medicine."

She wasn't sure what reaction she would get, reminding herself that the worse that could happen would be a flat no. Well, there could be worse things, but she had thought on those enough in the time she had stood in doubt.

Muirgen looked down to the ferret with a silent question about Soquili lands. When Felicity shook her head in answer, the alicorn let out a sigh as she refocused on the pale mare. "You wish to learn medicine," she stated.

The ways of medicine was something her herd had known well and passed down to their youngsters. It was a long and tedious practice--identifying good herbs for healing, teaching to avoid the bad ones, little placebo tricks for those not really sick. Some had considered her talent witchcraft.

"Why?"

Vidia had a feeling that she would have to prove her sincerity to the larger mare, so lifted her head a little higher as she stepped closer. "Yes, I wish to learn medicine. I want to help other Soquili heal. I want to be of help to my family's herd with this skill.

"I saw an old two-legger by herself, but she always had others coming to her dwelling. She would grind plants, put them in a leather bag, and give them to her fellow two-leggers. She even made a salve to heal my wounds,"
she paused to show the scars running lightly across her chest and front legs.

Her confidence faltered. Lowering her head she said quietly,
"I want to do something with my life."

The draft alicorn narrowed her eyes at the emphasis and the waning surety in the other mare. "Just something in your life? Most would be satisfied with just the happy, quiet life of maternity. Medicine is very tedious and takes extensive time to master."

She notice the last remnant air of confidence escape and instantly regretted how course she had sounded. She did not mean to drive someone away who looked to need help more than just a meaning to her own life. In fact, she was a little impressed that the young one before her could still store such feelings inside herself without the need to burst forth.

The paw from her companion was unnecessary to remind her to be delicate and not make an absolute refusal. They were both in agreement that something needed to be done to help Vidia.
"But I will take you under my wing regardless. Come, come. You've much to learn about medicine and in yourself."

Muirgen looked over at the mare beside her. She seemed so down beaten, the weight of the world on her shoulders. Did she look that way years ago? And the vibe seemed so blue, or that was the color she could see from the corner of her eye.

"Do you know who you are or what you want in your life? I sense a void in you, young one."

She could see her question had caught her off guard. A perplexed look crossing the pale mare's features, the walls were starting to form.

"You can't heal others if you aren't healed yourself. While the basics are good to know, belief is what helps with miracles." She offered a warm smile. "And I may know what you are going through."

Her eyes took on a distant look as she told her own story, her own personal struggle, and her salvation.

----------

"While the problems may be different, the path to healing is always the same," the alicorn said. "Take how we trim the plants we gather," she said as her ferret companion plucked away the brown dead leaves. "Even though we'll dry the plants, we take the time to remove the bad that has no healing properties left. So too will you do this as you travel down the path to healing."

She lowered her head to help lift the ferret up to hang the plants from an oak tree branch. "Airing out the past also helps you overcome it. If you keep it bottled up, it will only fester just like the plants will mold if not taken care of properly."

The ferret patted her head so she could lower her back down. "Of course, we'll do all of this in a more delicate manner. Spiritual healing takes longer than medicinal healing," she said as she lifted her head back up to smile warmly at the mare in front of her.

She walked around the mare, eyeing her accessories and general appearance.
"I suspect those accessories were for attention. How about we lessen the load and simplify?" Felicity instantly went to work at the bangles around the pale mare's pasturns before scurrying up her tail to the feathers tied there.

"Please don't remove my family's feathers," she said as they fell to the ground. Muirgen swept them up, tucking them in the new herb bag. "Never fear. We'll put them to good use, dear."

The earring was removed as well as the herd feathers. The alicorn stood back surveying her friend's dismantling. "By removing the accessories, I've brought you down to your basics. Don't worry, we'll give you a new look, but remember that appearances isn't everything. It shouldn't matter how you look on the outside but how you are on the inside, which would be reflected in how you treat those around you."
