The sands were hot, accentuated by the overlooking sun across the light ran horizon. But the female child was not; golden eyes peeked from its dark grey owner as the tribal wings across the sides of her pelt stretched along with her form. A small yawn came, and paws started to move forward from her family's den.
It had been a long time since she and her siblings were old enough to wander out on their own (or at least she had thought so - that didn't stop her from wandering out once she gained the cognition to, either!). Gold streaked tail swept across the sand, feeling the warmth and texture. It was ever so familiar, and sometimes she dreamed about feeling greener pastures or even seeing a wide expanse of water instead of the grainy blanket of land.
Of course, that day would come. And she would bring those feelings to the Motoujamii-Simo. If only! She thought if she could be the first to discover some nearby hidden oasis, that would be only the beginning of her delight and fame. However, before that, she still had much to do to prepare herself for such exploration. She could admit that she was not as well practiced as any of her other siblings, unable to get in the mood for an out of the blue tumble with one of them. She could say that she was the only one of her sisters who took those mini spars less seriously, even though she was just as good as them. With all of her sisters' training, it was a possible thought that their skills would eventually surpass hers. Speaking of which... her eyes perked in alert as she sensed someone coming upon her from behind.
"Nyimak?" she called, catching sight of the ever familiar dark coat and red winged form of the eldest litter sibling.

Nyimak had watched with half-lidded eyes as her sister had picked her way towards the mouth of the den. The maroon coated female had always been a bit of a light sleeper, forever alert for any possible trouble from one of her siblings and never wanting to be caught off guard. They were a rough and tumble bunch, as many firekin could claim to be, and the orange eyed cub hated to be surprised.
Leave it to Nyimak to try to prepare for everything. She couldn't help it though. If she were to be the best of the best than she had to be prepared and cautious. Of course, she was still very young and still very awkward but no one could claim she didn't try. Today was no different, though she had been surprised to see Umbia making her escape. Hmm. Whatever was she up to anyway?
With her sisters attention on the mouth of the den, and the world outside, Nyimak saw her opportunity. Ever so quietly she rolled to her paws and darted after her. If she were lucky, she'd get within pouncing distance and manage to bowl her sister over! Unfortunately though, the orange-winged cub didn't quite reach her goal. She was just starting to crouch and take aim at the mouth of the den when Umbia turned and called her name.
Dung beetles, she'd been caught!
Letting out a small growl, ears flattening in disappointment Nyimak gave a half-hearted pounce, just enough to bridge the distance and swat gently at her sister. It was an affectionate gesture though. "You weren't supposed to hear me, you know." Still, Nyimak didn't like to think that she had stalked wrong or made too much noise. Maybe Umbia just had extra-sensetive hearing in the morning. Yeah, that was it, right? It was far too early for the red coated cub to admit to her own possible mistakes. She'd save such self-criticism for the afternoon. "Where you going?" If Umbia thought she'd take a solo adventure, with Nyimak she was nosy and proud. Heaven forbid she get left out of some secret adventure with her sister!
"Mom wouldn't like you sneaking out you know." Not that Nyimak really cared. Goodness knew how often she had snuck out with some of her brothers, only to get caught by Azar! Still, they were older now, and freedom wasn't quite as difficult to discover as it had been months prior.

Recognizing the stance her sister was in and the hurried disappointment once she had uttered Nyimak's name, Umbia was able to make a quick shift to the side from her sister's pounce and meet her claws with her own paw, a smile coming onto her face. Leave it to Nyimak to start off mornings like this. It was only reasonable for Nyimak to have such aggression - it was completely warranted! Not only did some of her brothers pretend they were better than the sisters, but Nyimak had perhaps a first shot chance at proving herself to their parents, being the firstborn. But Umbia was proud of Nyimak's training and dedication to her potential prominence. Sometimes, however... Nyimak could pounce on her a little less often. She knew Umbia was growing to be less enthusiastic about playing as they all once had in their youth, anyways!
"You're always excitable in the morning, Nyimak!" Umbia responded, taking a few steps back and further out from the den.
And then the inevitable curiosity with the question came. It was just like Nyimak to stick her nose in on Umbia's adventures. Sometimes Umbia was afraid to tell Nyimak that she would have preferred going alone, but she had trouble denying the company of her sister. It wasn't that Umbia didn't like having her sisters or even brothers around; it was that Umbia just... felt like she accomplished more things and was better at going off by herself rather than either relying on or having to look after someone else.
"Welllll," she began, choosing to respond to the other thing first, "Mom's old enough to know that we sneak out sometimes. You know me, Nyimak - instead of fighting with one of our brothers at home, I rather be outside looking for something new!"
She stopped, then, pondering the answer to where she was going. Well, she didn't really know either - she usually just went off and went somewhere, and it always turned out rather pleasant for her. So not knowing where to go wasn't a bad plan. Even though she recalled going out a few times with Nyimak, it seemed like the two still had different interests while retaining their affection and respect for each other. Maybe Nyimak would do better if she just stayed home and kept mom and the others busy. Concluding this, Umbia shifted her gaze suspiciously off of her sister's form and into the distance...
"Uh... I'm going now. Bye, Nyimak!" she said quite jovially as she suddenly made a dart off from her position and away from their den.

The red cub couldn't help but grin as her sister countered her pounce. Not that she really had been looking to start a fight . . . but . . . still . . . Umbia wasn't exactly known for her aggression or her desire to duel. While Nyimak thought about training and how to grow stronger, and bigger, and more awesome she knew that her sister preferred to go about life differently. She found adventure on her own time, in her own way. Nyimak did like to believe that Umbia might be secretly dueling with others in her free time, but that had yet to be confirmed. For now though, she was content to spend time with her sister.
Poor Umbia. The gods knew that once Nyimak had an idea, it was very difficult to sway her from it. She was stubborn and this meant that she was going to stick to her like glue. . . unless, of course, something even more interesting crossed her path. But for now, it was her sister, and she wasn't going to let her get away so easily!
It didn't occur to the red female that her sibling might just up and leave. And that's exactly what she did! "Hey! UMBIA!" Surprise turned in to faux irritation and she let out a small melodramatic little roar. She might as well wake up the whole den now that she was at it. "Where d'ya think you're going!?" She hollered, instantly pouncing forward and bolting after her sibling. Oh ho . . . if she thought she'd give Nyimak the slip, she was sadly mistaken.
This was only adding flames to her stubborn fire, and her sister had settled on her own fate. By running, that meant she didn't want Nyimak to know or to be around her, and that surely meant trouble! Where she could have pawed at sand for awhile and eventually her sister would have boredly left, with Umbia running that meant she sealed her fate with her presence.
She didn't holler after her sister like she wanted - she would conserve her energy so she could make sure to wear Umbia out. She didn't push herself to her limits so she might over run her sister, oh no. For now, they were both full of energy and Nyimak knew that wasting her sprint now would be foolish. Nope, she'd wait til Umbia slowed enough so she could pounce and tackle her and demand an explanation.
The race was on.
