User ImageIt was a pretty nice afternoon in the graveyard, not too hot so it was possible to move around without getting overheated. Skada was on the prowl trying to find something worthwhile in the piles of rubble. She did have a special old bone with royal drool on it tucked away in her den, but it needed a very special creature to trade with so she was scouring the ground for other treasures. Or trash, she didn't really care as long as she could trade it for treasure. She had found a promising pile of bones and debris and was tearing into it to see if there might be something interesting buried in it. Nah, nothing remarkable, but perhaps in the pile over there?

User ImageThe mostly black male was happily-as happy as this one could get-digging his nose into one of the many piles he had made in the area. He had them sorted by what they were, since sorting any other way would yield piles much too big for even him to keep track of. There was one for bones and large pelts from the leftover meals of silly lions he had stalked in the roguelands yesterday. One rather large pelt from a zebra had been used like a makeshift bag, Itzal holding it by two ends with his teeth. This alone was a difficult feat, but it paid off in the end. He didn't have to continually make trips back and forth from the Mava'Bunda lands with his findings. Leaving his piles at home to be taken advantage of by other members of the pack. He hadn't been here long enough for most of them to learn to leave what he did alone. The ones without higher authority, of course. It wouldn't do him any good to get on the wrong side of the leaders. He might find himself sitting on his tail back in the roguelands. And that certainly wasn't a place he wanted to end up back in, again.

The Hyena buried his nose into the random pile, closing his eyes as a rather sharp bone neared the center of his forehead. He wasn't sure what he was looking for. Then again, he never was. It was when his jaws closed around a small elephant tusk that he heard a sound he never enjoyed hearing. With ears pointed forward, he raised his head, narrowing his eyes, the tusk still firmly clamped between his jaws.

Someone was messing with his piles!

Dropping the ivory, he bounded over it, covering the rather short distance between him and the pile being offended by someone else.

"Hey!" he growled out, coming to a stop just short of banging into the other Hyena. Oh? Another black and white one. Well, despite the fact she would need to be taught to mind her place near his work area, he had to admit she did have a very pretty coat color. Itzal had to admire anything following the same color code as himself. For he was all that he cared about. "Did no one teach you not to touch what isn't yours?" The mess she had made! That would take hours to sort back together, being the perfectionist he was.

If Skada had known that someone had created these piles on purpose... Nah, she would probably still have messed with them. When she was growled at she stood up in a offensive stance, with an oddly shaped bone hanging from the corner of her mouth. She recognised the less than happy hyena as one of the ones that had joined the pack as the same time as her, but she didn't really know him. Before being accepted into the graveyard pack she had travelled alone, most of the time, and she hadn't made many friends in the pack yet. She tried to stay on the good side of higher ranking hyenas but everyone else was fair game.

"Huh," she said, chewing provocatively on the bone she had stolen from the pile, "I don't see your name on it."

His scent was all over the piles, but that was beside the point. Manners had never been a prioritised area in her upbringing. In fact, she found that manners usually got in the way for getting what you wanted.

Itzal was careful not to let more of his irritation show through on his face or in his voice. Just in case this one was aware of the rash actions individuals tended to make when they were mad. Not that he made rash actions. Always the cunning thinker, not even a few heated words could get him to lose track of his goal. He was focused. Always focused. No one would take advantage of him, no matter his mood. And if they sought to try, he would surely teach them a lesson by being the more intelligent Hyena and throwing them for a mental ride.

Willing the hair on his back to flatten once more, the male changed his offensive stance to merely just stand. The growl was wiped off his lips as if it had never been. He hadn't recognized her as being in the same joining group as he at first. That didn't mean he knew anything about her, besides that she seemed a little snappy. He took that into consideration and willed the rest of his muscles to relax. Best to wait this out and see what kind of creature she was. For all he knew, she could be just as intelligent as he. In which case, he would need to be delicate. Enemies were not really what he wanted. Even if they were slobbering all over one of his bones.

"Heh. If I could write anything, there would be. But my scent serves just as well as any words. And it is all over that pile." His once perfectly sorted pile...He eyed the bone in the female's mouth, and his voice took on a more annoyed tune. "At least everything else still has it."

When Skada noticed that Itzal seemed to be backing down, she mentally labelled him as a whuss. Was he just going to stand there and take it? She could hear he was still annoyed, and while he looked strong enough he might just be one of those that didn't have sense to use it. She'd walked out of fights with stronger opponents because they had chickened out at her ferocity. And... ahem... limped away from others. But that was beside the point. Well... There was only one way to find out what kind this one was. Now, what would happen if she provoked him some more?

"Well then you shouldn't have made such sloppy scent marks," she said, bone still hanging from the corner of her mouth, "shouldn't you?"

The male was relaxed, but not sitting. Sitting would be a way of showing defeat. That she could come in and boss him around whenever she wanted and he would just sit there and take it. Standing, he could retaliate easier if she decided to either come at him or be even more difficult than she already was. It might not be a good way of showing dominance, but the calmer the situation, the easier it was to handle. Most of the time. Best to just stay delicate and asses the situation better before jumping to conclusions.

Itzal made a small growl in his throat. Temper had always been something he needed more control over.

"Nothing wrong with my scent marks," he responded, turning his nose slightly away from his pile, his grey eyes not leaving her. "Perhaps your nose is off. It does look a little crooked." If she wanted to get smart, well....He could dish them out, too.

Skada frowned and nearly went cross-eyed as she tried to inspect her own nose. It looked fine to her and not the least bit crooked. Really, what was his problem? She conveniently decided to forget that she had been the one starting the argument. It was easier to stay mad when she told herself that he was the one being unreasonable, and she could go on for a very long time if she just stayed miffed enough. The nose comment had been unexpected, and it bothered her just a little bit.

"No one has complained before," she said defensively, still trying to look at her own nose, "Maybe it's your eyes that needs to be checked. How many claws am I holding up? Going old and blind, huh?"

She waved one of her paws around in front of his face, too quickly for anyone to be able to count claws.

The male almost laughed at the sight of the other Hyena trying to see her own nose. Had he found himself a gullible one? Made him wonder what else he could have her check. If he was in the mood for fooling around. Which he so rarely seemed to be. There was much that had to be done. Things to be sorted, collected, or traded away. The roguelands were always changing. There was always work for Bone Collectors.

As it was, he allowed a little amused smile to play at the corner of his lips before he dropped it. With the hardness of his eyes, the smile came off more sinister than amused.

"Old I may be getting, but you'll find I'm in just as good health as I've always been," was the almost arrogant reply. No, he really wasn't a young Hyena anymore. Though his grey eyes were just that:A color. He was not yet going blind and deaf. Nor did his bones hurt him. Not even in the coldest mornings, after an equally cold night of barely moving.

Making a little growl sound in his throat, Itzal moved a little to one side, away from his pile, but being sure to turn back around so as not to present his back to the female. "This idle chit chat is a waste of time. Don't you have a job to do?"

It sounded as if he was trying to get away, and that was enough motivation for her to continue their 'idle chat'. She wondered if it would work to tease him about being old, or if she should try to find something else to work with. He was growling, but he wasn't aggressive enough to scare her off. And she could tell he was at least a little bit annoyed. A challenge, or perhaps just something to do for a while.

"But scavenging is what I do," Skada said and grinned, "And if it's more work than that I'd rather let one of the slaves do it. But you might be one of those hyenas who enjoy doing slave work? Perhaps I should call on you next time I need something fixed."
PostPosted: Fri Jul 22, 2011 4:40 pm

The male Hyena made a little grunt sound in his throat. Whether it was an annoyed humph or an agreement over the choice of slave wasn't quite clear. It could have been both. But whatever it meant, he hadn't moved besides a little flick of the tail at a single fly.

In truth, it was more of an irritated grunt that didn't reflect much on his face. The female whose name continued to elude him was clearly trying to goad him on. For the most part, it was working to increase his irritation over being kept from his duties. He didn't want to be seen as lazy in the pack. He wouldn't admit it outloud, but he was getting old. It would only be a matter of time before he would start to show it. Showing age while alone in the roguelands would be like painting a giant red target on your back. He needed to protection of a pack to live the rest of his days.

As it was, Itzal allowed nothing but a not-so-charming smile to cross his lips. "I wouldn't be as fit as I am without a little more work," he said a little too proudly. Which was true. Living alone in the roguelands tended to toughen you up. Not like those felines who were born in a pride. "Though I'm sure I'd make you regret asking me to fix anything. I never was good at that."

Hey! Was that an insinuation that she was lazy? Or unfit? She knew several other pack members that were contributing less than she did. Some seemed to lounge around most of the days, doing nothing while she actually collected and traded for the betterment of her new pack. The fur on her neck rose, but she decided to pretend she didn't care. She continued the conversation with a bit less venom, but that was just a coincidence. If she found another weakness she wouldn't hesitate to use it. It was the funny thing to do after all, and this male was getting on her nerves. Never mind that she had pretty much started this "fight".

"I'm good at fixing things," she boasted, "I just don't see why I shouldn't use all the packs resources and stick to the important things.
PostPosted: Thu Sep 22, 2011 6:40 pm

Itzal couldn't care less if the female was good at fixing things. The one thing he wished she was good at, she wasn't doing correctly razz utting down his bone and walking away. She certainly was persistent at getting a rise out of him. Did she not have any hobbies? Surely there must be some work for her to do. Itzal was rarely without anything to sort or trade away.

"What would these important things be?" he asked in slight curiosity, being sure to keep said curiosity to himself. He didn't want to show an interest in what she was doing. That would just goad her on more.

"Well, collecting and trading and inventing," Skada snapped her jaws shut and narrowed her eyes. Did he really think she'd spill all her secret ideas just like that? "Important things."

She cast a sidelong glance on one of Itcal's piles of bones. Some of those would fit for what she had in mind, but he didn't seem very keen to share his finds. Feh! She didn't need his bones anyway. It couldn't be too hard to get her own assortment of suitable bones. She knew some Bone Collectors traded among each other but she'd rather gnaw a leg off than deal with this stuck up fellow. She chewed some more on the stolen bone and then dropped it carelessly as if it hadn't even mattered to her in the first place.

"If you excuse me I have very important business to tend to," she said, unaware of the irony of this statement, "Top secret!"
PostPosted: Tue Oct 11, 2011 3:09 pm

Success! She seemed likely to finally leave him alone to continue his work! Itzal flicked his tail slowly from side to side, eager to see her back, retreating from his precious piles.

The male was about ready to make a snappy comeback, but decided against it. If he provoked her, she would feel the need to linger longer. She'd already demonstrated how much fun she got from getting rises from others. There was no need to encourage her further.

Instead, Itzal let out a laugh. Not a loud, jolly one like one would make against a joke. But a smaller one someone might make if they encountered someone they found doing something funny. It had come out of his throat without his being able to stop it. Something about the way she had said those last two words were hilarious to him. Like a pup who found something they were good at and thought it made them more important than others.

"Don't let me stop you, then," he answered her, the laughter already dying from the air, but a smile still resting upon his lips. "I'm sure the leader would be angry if her most trusted Bone Collector wasn't doing her top secret duties."

Skada had a sneaking suspicion that he was laughing at her, but she kept walking. If he was laughing at her she wasn't going to give him the pleasure of getting any reaction out of her. She knew he'd stop laughing once he saw her finished invention... He'd cry like a pup and wish he was the one thinking it up! Feh... His piles of bones would look puny and unimportant in comparison.

"That's right," she said as she stalked away. "They would be angry."
