Mkali’s head was typically full of dark thoughts, but today even she felt a little worse than usual. Her sister was miserable, and she hated that. That male wouldn’t get away with what he did… In Mkali’s mind, tricking her sister was the same as tricking herself. Only worse. Mkali thought more highly of her sister and that made it all the worse.

Now all she could think about was how her sister would suffer. She might have cubs… what a horrid thought! Mkali would help her in any way she could, but with Adanna going through all this, she couldn’t help but feel that anything she did would be small. Numb. Meaningless. She would be on the outside looking in, with no way of knowing just how her sister felt. She had never experienced cubs or anything like it, so how could she really sympathize?

And then, there was that other traitorous thought. She was closer with her sister than anyone else… but now, there was that male. He had seen a side of Adanna that Mkali never would, and even though it was never a desire she’d had, she still felt jealous. For years of her life Adanna was the only one that mattered to Mkali, but now Mkali was not the only one on Adanna’s radar.

Mkali made a choice, something she rarely did without Adanna’s input. But she didn’t want Adanna to know about it yet, not until she was sure. In order to fully appreciate what her sister was going through, and to be on her level, she’d have to get herself impregnated too. It was the only way, in Mkali’s mind.

It was night, and the sky covered with a filmy layer of clouds that blocked any light that might have peeked through. Mkali should have been in a great mood - this was just her type of setting. But the thoughts in her head prevented anything but her persistently black mood.

He was going to quit the pride, Shibasa decided darkly, staring up at the dirty sky with disgust. The antelope he had just brought down had left some damage in return. He had a few bloody scars on face from the b*****d's antlers. They stung. It hadn't been an easy kill at all, although it should have been. This was no young antelope. The meat would be tough and chewy, and that would get him complaints from the cubs and probably that blue bubble lady, too. Plus they would be complaining about how long it took him in the first place. They wanted the hunting done quickly so he could go pick fruit for their god.

Fruit. What the hell did one do with fruit? And what was worse, the demonic looking lion thought as the sky rumbled above him, they had forced Nobo to go pick fruit, leaving Shibasa the only hunter. Yeah, he decided, he was going to quit the pride. He could live without a soul if it meant he wouldn't be bossed around all the time.

Mkali hadn’t been hunting, but she had been thinking about it. Hunting and searching were similar but unrelated in her mind. Hunting was honorable. As you brought down your prey you were rewarded by the rush of blood into your mouth, and the feast afterwards. The hunt she now performed seemed shameful in comparison, and it’s end result would be less pleasant. Or at least, that’s how Mkali viewed it. But somehow, she couldn’t get the thought of blood out of her mind now. She stopped after realizing she smelled it. All her wandering thoughts had distracted her from what her mind had been trying to tell her all along. Raising her head, she sniffed the air and followed the aroma.

The trail ended at a male lion. She could see the red on his pelt from a distance, but the smell of blood from his fresh kill was even more obvious to her. She loved that smell. Even though this male might be dangerous to a female traveling alone, Mkali was confident she could handle things. If it turned ugly, she might be able to outrun him, as long as she kept aware of her surroundings. So she trudged forward, expressionless as always, until she was within earshot.

“Is that all for you?” she called, her voice, as usual, quiet and nearly expressionless. Mkali’s bright blue eyes shone out of the darkness, studying the male blatantly. She liked his looks, but she’d have to wait and see what he was like to see if he’d be right for her search. Not any old dumb brute would do, even if she was desperate she had her standards.

He looked over at the female, wondering when she had gotten there. Damn, if Nobo had been there, he wouldn't have been caught off guard like this. "No," he said, looking at his prey. "This goes to a bunch of squalling brats that aren't even mine." He snorted, still disgusted with his own situation. Roughly he pressed a paw on the antelope's hip and ripped the leg off with his teeth, tossing it in her direction. "You can have that, if you want."

She was pretty, but that monotone voice made him a bit wary. What was she after? Well, if it was stealing his prey, he had already proven willing to share. "Name's Shibasa. And you are?"

Mkali didn’t move as the piece of carcass landed at her feet. She wore no expression at all, and that didn’t change, but inwardly she was deep in thought. Shibasa was not hostile but the way he spoke of the “brats” at home made him sound bitter. Well… as long as it wasn’t directed at herself, no bother.

Slowly, her eyes turned down at the antelope leg at her feet, as though she’d only just now noticed it long after it landed. She sniffed at it in a way, to someone watching, that might seem disinterested. But she was hungry, and once she’d about decided he wasn’t going to come after her, she bared her teeth and bit into it, shaking her head from side to side eagerly to rip a piece off. It tasted wonderful… an unexpected but pleasant surprise for her efforts.

Mkali didn’t waste much time in eating. She tore off a few bites, and then reminded herself that she had a job to do. If Shibasa had cubs, he might have a mate too. If he were unwilling to help her, she still had a long night of searching ahead. After all, she’d already resolved herself not to stoop to the level of her sister’s… friend. She could find someone who knew what they were getting into.

A long moment had passed since Shibasa had introduced himself. “Mkali,” she replied, licking the blood from her lips. “And I have a proposition for you, if you’re interested.” Her voice was the same low monotone, all business and no passion. “I need a male for one night. I don’t care if you have a mate or not. If you’re willing to help me you must also be willing to never bother me again afterwards, even if you should see me. Which I very much doubt.” Mkali was all business, no passion as she spoke.

He blinked. Well... that definitely wasn't the come on line he was used to! Then again, he didn't usually GET come on lines, so maybe he wasn't experienced enough. Ah well... He frowned thoughtfully, sitting down next to his prey and thinking about her proposition for a moment. If it didn't matter whether he had a mate or not, then he didn't necessarily have to tell her, did he?

But seriously, it didn't look as if she was really... well... willing. He liked his partners to enjoy themselves, and she didn't sound as if she cared one way or the other. Then again, she hadn't seemed to care about the meat before she ripped into it.

"I have to take the meat back before I can," he said after a moment. "Otherwise it'll go to waste. You willing to wait?"

Mkali sighed, looking as thought she were disappointed. Well, other than the sigh, her expression remained the same really, so it was hard to tell. “Fine. You can take it back and I’ll wait. But I‘ll be extremely displeased if you don‘t show up again.” It wasn’t a very good threat, because naturally in order for her to back that up with anything, she’d have to hunt him down, and she was definitely not willing to go that far even if he did stand her up. It was a gamble, but if she did wait for him and he didn’t show, all she’d waste would be one night. She even had dinner already, so it wouldn’t even be a major loss.

“And also… make sure you’re not followed.” One thing Mkali DID NOT want to deal with were his cubs tagging along… or an angry, vengeful mate, if one existed. And so, she assumed the deal was decided, and she laid down in the grass with the antelope leg in her paws and tore into it, prepared to have herself a good meal of it before he got back.

He nodded and grabbed the antelope by the back of the neck, hauling it away. For a long, long time he was gone, and the sky started opening up, drops of rain falling to the ground. Then he showed up in the distance, looking far more cheerful than he had before.

He trotted over to her, looking up at the sky before saying anything. "Think we should at least find a tree or something before we get poured on?" he asked her. He had forgotten about the whole monotone thing being worrisome and gotten focused on the important part. She wanted to spend some... quality time with him, no strings attached.

Mkali had her attention arrested for a good long while with the meat, but once it was gone she simply waited, thinking. She had gotten it into her head that she would not enjoy this… but now she wondered why? The male was attractive enough, although she hadn’t taken time to consider that, and he hadn’t pestered her when she made her suggestion to him. She liked his prudent thinking; before getting involved with her, he had to go back and feed his cubs. He wasn’t the typical male that heard she was willing and couldn’t focus on anything else. She liked that.

She saw him appear again long after he left, and as he came toward her she took the time now to look him over carefully. She liked what she saw, and now that she had a better opinion of him she felt herself relax a little. She was still on guard, but slightly less so now. When he made his suggestion about the rain, she felt even better. He was thinking ahead, and that was a quality she admired.

“Hmm… yes,” she replied, glancing at the sky in dismay. All that lovely cloud cover could put a damper on things if rain broke out. She couldn’t think of anything less appealing than being cold and wet. “I saw a stand of trees on my way here.” With that, she got up slowly, stretched, and stalked off back in their direction. She assumed he would follow if he wanted to, so she didn’t have to invite him along.

He followed silently, looking for the trees that she had mentioned, the imminent future clearly in his mind. It was almost enough to overcome the pure satisfaction he had felt from dropping the food in front of the pride and racing away as fast as he could, leaving the annoying ones to scream after him in rage and frustration.

If he weren't quitting the pride, he thought, he'd probably be kicked out soon. Ahh, that was satisfying. Well, other than the whole "god of cursed = soul back" thing he would be losing. Well, maybe he'd reconsider after they had their fun.

For now, he had some quality time to spend!
