User ImageImarogbe sat at the mouth of the den. Moments before, he had been relaxing with his mother, but she had left to go hunt for them, leaving him to himself. The sun high in a afternoon sky, his brothers were out playing just beyond the den, and he had opted to lay inside in the shade by his mother’s side. The little cub respected and looked up to his father, but he favored his mother. Her fiery energy and witty personality kept him at her side. He sat nonchalantly, trying not to look like he was waiting for his mother to return. Ima didn’t want his brothers catching him unaware and teasing him for being so attached to Afsar. Spotting one of his brothers playing not to far away, he trotted over to Harith. “How long do you think they’ll be gone?” Ima casually asked, barely resisting the urge to pounce on his brother’s twitching tail.

User ImageAs was often with Harith, the blue eyed cub seemed to have found something floating on the breeze. It was a feather, in a very bright yellow color. He dd so love to jump and couldn't resist leaving his other three brothers to play on their own to chase it.

As always, the bright object was too high in the sky and the cub craned his neck up to keep it in his sight. He didn't dare jump, for fear of going too high and hurting himself with the landing. It had happened once already on occasion. That was enough for him.

So focused on the feather was he, he didn't hear someone approach him. At the question, Harith jumped a little, the fur on his back sticking up in fright. A comical sight for anyone looking at him. Not so comical with his heart pounding in his chest. Looking to his brother, he narrowed his eyes as if he was having trouble finding the answer to the question. This wasn't too far from the truth.

"Mother?" he asked, reaching up a paw to smooth down the hair on top of his head. Once satisfied, he sat up straighter and a look of utter concentration touched his face. In all honesty, he hadn't paid much attention to how long it took the two females to catch something. Not in his still short lifespan, anyway. His tail flicked back and forth while he thought about this. "Couple of hours?" he finished most unhelpfully. Hunting looked difficult. It would have taken him that long.

Imarogbe huffed to himself, his brother wasn’t much help. Harith had always seemed rather absent-minded to him. He stared briefly up at the glaring sun, but quickly looked away least it burn his eyes. Eyeing around him, he tried to find what Harith had been up to without success. Staring off into the distance one last time, he gave up pining for his mother and turned his attention fully to his brother. “What are you doing anyway?”, he inquired curiously.

Ima was still amused at having startled his brother, he had noticed the fur on him slowly settling back down against his skin, and he fleetingly considered teasing him about it. Suddenly spotting the bright yellow feather, he wondered aloud, “Where did you get that from?” He batted at it as the wind carried it over his head.

The blue eyed cub tilted his head at Ima. He was quite aware his answer wouldn't be satisfactory to the other little lion. But it couldn't be helped. He really had no idea when the two females would be back. Or where they had gone, really. Hunting wasn't an interest to him. He wasn't even sure where it was done or how. Besides, it was messy. Too messy for him to even think about trying. Some lions liked to make good first impression for their families by showing how strong they were. Harith liked to by showing how well kept and mannerly he could be.

Keeping silent, he watched the yellow feather drift over their heads and away on the breeze, not eager to chase it and get further away from the den. If they were out catching dinner, none of the adults would be very pleased to find one or two missing cubs when everyone's stomach was empty.

"Nowhere," Harith answered, snapping his blue eyes back to the equally blue of Ima. "Must have come from someone's kill." Tucking his tail up against one side of his body, he sat up straighter. "If you're hungry and impatient, why don't you go attempt to catch something small? Can't be any different from chasing tails." Given messier, but he kept that to himself.

His eyes widening slightly, and he immediately hid his reaction from his brother. Ima’s tail flicked back and forth in excitement. As strongly as felt against giving any of his brothers credit for actually having a good idea...it was a good idea and it sounded like a lot of fun. Even though he hadn’t actually been asking after their mother because he was hungry, it was a good way to pass the time, and besides, Harith didn’t need to know that.

Glancing around the area around, attempting to look uninterested, he wondered where one would go about finding small creatures to hunt. Although, he was a bit edgy about venturing away from the den, even if he was close by. He had to admit to himself, he had no idea how one would go about hunting, and doubted that his brother cared enough to know.

Regardless, he tried anyway, “Alright,” he nudged his brother, “come with me, we won’t go far.” If he could convince Harith to come with him, then he wouldn’t be as apprehensive about going alone. The sun was still high in the sky, so the night would not be coming too quickly. His other brothers seemed as though they were caught up in their own games and weren't likely to want to go with him.

The two-colored cub's shoulders sagged a little. He hadn't meant to go along if Ima took Harith up on his suggestion to find himself a snack. He just thought it sounded like a good idea at the time. If you're hungry, go find something to eat if you can't wait. To his childish mind, it was that simple. There might even be a chance of coming across a relative who would be happy to share something with you. Harith knew he had a lot of relatives in the pride. Most of whom he hadn't really met for a long period of time. Except one of his aunts. One of his mother's sisters.

Looking up at the sun's location, the blue eyed Pesar sighed a little as he dropped his head back to normal. It would be easier just to go. As much as he didn't want to get too far from the den, the cub side of him wanted to explore while he was still young and full of energy. But it was so comfortable being by the den...

"Sure," Harith agreed, getting up and starting forward. He knew about as much as Ima about how and where to hunt. He supposed you just walked around until you found an animal of some sort. There wouldn't be any large ones within the pride grounds, of course. There should be smaller ones, though. A lizard. Rodent. Bird, though those would be difficult to catch.

Turning around, he went to go behind the den while still moving away from it. Raising his head, he sniffed the air, something else he supposed you did. At least, that's what he did when he needed to locate his brother or one of the adults.

"Tell me if you see anything, I guess," he told Ima, not caring how unsure he sounded. Pad's didn't hunt. He didn't need to care.

Grinning triumphantly to himself, he trotted after his brother. He hadn’t thought that Harith would actually consent to accompanying him, but he was secretly grateful that he did. Glancing to his mildly distant brother, he grinned inwardly to himself. While he would never admit to needing them, having four brothers did come in handy. There was always someone to harass into going on odd adventures with.

Cubbish excitement bubbled in his chest. He knew that, upon adulthood, he would not be the one to hunt, it would be his females, so, in the moment, he decided that he wanted to try it out now. Besides, he knew that he would have to hunt for himself while in the Rogue Lands anyway once he reached adolescence.

"Alright," he replied to Harith. Walking alongside his brother behind their den, his eyes darted this way and that, attempting to find any little misfortunate creature to practice hunting on. He wasn’t entirely sure what exactly it was that they were looking for. Thus far, he had simply planning to ‘hunt’ whatever they found, but being that he hadn’t the slightest idea of what that entailed, he was quickly realizing that he did not know what to do once they found something.

Pondering the topic at hand, Ima walked close to his brother’s side, but far away enough so that he wouldn’t notice. The thought that he was searching for something that he hadn't the slightest as to what to do with made him a bit anxious.

Harith was more confused than nervous over this little adventure. And perhaps a little annoyed about agreeing to go on it. He didn't care if he would one day be on his own in the roguelands. He was more concerned with the here and now. Something that would come back to bite him on the butt one day. While he's alone, hungry, and can't find any leftover kills. Nonetheless, his eyes were peeled for any movement. Don't anyone ever say Harith didn't do things for his brothers.

Truthfully, he wasn't expecting to see any movement. Not this deep in the pride. What critter in their right mind would live among such a large number of lions?

Apparently that one.

For a moment, natural instincts took over and Harith stopped in his tracks, his head facing the small hole the little rodent had dove into. With that, the cub's own instinct was gone. What did you do, now? It was down that hole. He couldn't reach it down there. Nor did he want to wait by the hole for it to pop its head back out.

Turning his head towards Ima, the black and tan male raised a paw in the direction of the hole, barely visible from this distance. "Did you see that?" he whispered. "There's something down there." He guessed the next step was to sneak up on it, and so he dropped down on all fours. Behind him, his tail flicked back and forth eagerly.

Ima had been silently walking beside his brother, looking off into the distance and wondering if they would even see anything, when he felt his brother’s sudden halt. Quickly jerking his head around, he looked to see what made his brother stop, when he saw a thin little tail disappear into a small hole in the ground. Surprised, he looked to Harith to see his reaction. Seeing his brother’s eyes trained on the small hole, he assumed that Harith had gotten a better look at whatever it had been.

Staring into the hole, he answered the enquiry, “Yeah, what was that?” he asked back, pawing slightly at the hole. Gazing curiously at it, he wondered how anything could live in such a tiny place. Remembering that they were there for hunting purposes, he backed up slightly and considered what to do. He saw Harith lower himself to the ground near the small opening in the dirt. It looked like the right thing to do, so he placed himself on the opposite side of the hole, and stared into it.

He craned his head forward and sniffed lightly. He could smell something down there, and, flicking his ears forward, he could hear very slight, tiny sounds coming from deep in the hole. Thinking hard, he tried to come up with a way to get to it. Contemplating the situation, and finally said lowly to Harith, “Do you think we can dig it up?”

Harith tried to sneak up on the hole like he would one of his brothers or an adult's tail. Since he hadn't been taught how to hunt properly-that was a Banu's job, not the Pad's-he wasn't doing so very silently. Rocks were flung out of the way. Twigs snapped. There was even a small splash as he stepped in a little puddle. If the rodent hadn't already been nervous about living within a large pride of lions, it was definitely on the alert as it was noiselessly stalked after.

The cub with his belly still pressed against the dirt almost wished he had some sisters. At least than he could watch the huntress training of them and get a few tips on how to do this. It was clear he knew more of how to do this than his brother did. He enjoyed that. So he didn't want to look a fool in front of him. He wanted to show he knew what he was doing.

But besides dropping down low, he wasn't sure what to do.

Peering into the hole, he backed away and got up into a sitting position. No point stalking after something hidden so deep underground, you couldn't see it. "Looked like a mouse." Pawing at the sides of the hole, he sighed. Digging would be impossible. Who knew how far down it was.

"I don't think so," he responded, glancing into the hole, again. He doubted adults sat and waited for one little rodent to come out of hiding. It just barely served as a grown-ups snack. "Unless you want to try. Best we will find out here."

Imarogbe had ultimately decided that this was pointless. He and Harith had been sitting here staring into the hole that the little mouse had ran into without any signs of progress. The small creature seemed content to stay exactly where it was. Huffing, he thought to himself of what they should do.

Beforehand, he had imagined that hunting would be much more exciting that sitting around and waiting. Ima had always imagined his mother and Elsa on dramatic high speed chases to bring down their prey. Looking around, he tried to think of something that would make things interesting. His clear blue eyes fell upon a long and thick stick laying innocently on the ground nearby. Tilting his head to the side in thought, he immediately leapt up with, what he believed, was a brilliant idea.

Trotting over to the stick, he picked it up and held it between his little teeth. Returning to the hole, he peered into it once more before turning the stick so the he could hold the end of it. Hovering over the hole, he let the stick go and watched at it proceeded to fall straight down into the hole. Hearing it thumping at the bottom, he instantly heard an offended high pitched squeak. Excited that something had happened, he moved to look into the hole but jumped back as a small form shot up out of the ground.

Feeling defeated and not wanting to take the effort to find a solution, Harith dropped down onto his belly. He wormed his way a little closer to the hole, just in case the rodent decided it wanted to risk its luck. To him, it was completely pointless. To be living smack dab in the middle of a large pride of felines, this mouse was either really stupid...Or really clever. Or just damn lucky not to have been caught yet. He felt more curiosity over why the little creature felt like living here than anything else.

His mind wandered over the possibilities. Perhaps it felt shelter in amongst all the predators. It still ran the risk of becoming someone's snack. But that was only if the feline in question hadn't already eaten. Who would want to chase something down a small hole when you were starving was beyond him. He'd rather just flake out under the sun when his stomach was empty and wait for his mother and the other Banu. He wasn't going to chase something and make himself hungrier. Seemed silly, to his young mind.

The pride would provide shelter from other carnivores. All the little critter had to worry about was a hungry feline crossing its path. Still, it also seemed a rather boring life to spend your whole time in your den. Even Harith liked to adventure around the pride sometimes. As much as he enjoyed the comfort of his home.

Blue eyes blinked back into focus when the greyish form of his brother came back into view. Carrying a...Stick?

Harith stepped back to watch in wonder over what Ima was planning. He couldn't figure it out until he dropped the stick into the hole. Almost immediately, there was a squeal and a furry shape darted up the stick and out of the hole. The blue eyed cub tried to make a mad dash for it. He had his paws wrapped around it at one point, but it managed to squirm out of his grasp. It dropped to the ground, preparing to run away somewhere else.

Shaking the dust from himself, Ima looked up to see what was happening.

Still in a shock over the reappearance of the mouse, Ima briefly watched his brother scramble for it. His excitement rose as Harith’s paws wrapped around the mouse. It quickly deflated as the mouse wriggled away and escaped.

Determined, Ima sprang up an chased after the mouse. Honing in on the small creature, he ran after it as fast as he could and pounced. In the second that it took him to land on the ground, he watched the mouse disappear beneath his little paws.

Momentarily feeling successful, he cautiously lifted up a paw to look, only to find a deep hole in the ground that was roughly the size of a mouse. Ima stared at the hole. Realization dawned on him that he had lost this battle with the mouse.

Then he looked up at his brother and said,“It got away.”

Instinct slowly overpowering his senses since the beginning of the chase, Harith was quick to follow behind his brother. As lazy a lion s he was, you couldn't take the instinct of a hunter out of anyone. It was there, hiding deep inside until the moment it was needed. Unfortunately, the moment it was needed was for a pair of amateurs.

How did females do this? The thought crossed the young male's mind as he skidded in the dirt after Ima's failed attempt, his front paws outstretched before him like he expected the rodent to come scurrying nearby for him to grab. Blowing the hair out of his eyes, he slowly got to his feet.

"I give," he huffed, flicking his black tail in slight frustration. Father wouldn't be too proud of them behaving like Banu anyway, he was sure. This was female work. Not male. "Too much effort to catch one little creature...How do they do this?" Plopping down on his butt, Harith raised one paw to lick the dirt off. Now he was filthy on top of it all.

Ima sat up away from the escape hole. After a moment, he began to laugh. It was pretty silly of them to be chasing a little mouse around like they were. He wondered what dad would say. At his brother’s defeat, Ima decided that maybe he would try hunting again some other time.

A much later time. “I have no idea,” he replied to his brother. How the lionesses of the pride managed to feed everyone all the time, he would never know. Maybe he would ask their mother once she returned. Ima wondered if she was back yet.

As Ima sat there, he turned back to his brother and said, “Let’s go home.” There was no use staying there now that their attempted prey had successfully escaped. Besides, the sky was beginning to turn the orange and purple colors of evening. He knew that they weren’t supposed to be out too late.

With that, he stood and started moving toward the direction of their home.
