The rain had stopped and a glorious rainbow stretched out across the sky. Rave had been taking cover in a small cavern. He walked outside of the cavern and gazed up at the sky with interest. It was the first time he ever saw a rainbow. In his mind he couldn’t help but think about that mare he had a brief meeting with on his journey.

Siiiigh..

Another day passed; still no sign of his grandfather. The half harpy was beginning to give up on his search for his only remaining family member. Shaking his head trying to rid the negative thoughts rolling in his mind; he continued his search. Walking through a grassy meadow and he grimaced at the mud underneath his talons.

When the rains had come, Spellbound had taken refuge under the leafy canopy of a small outcrop of trees nestled in the basin of a gradual dip in the landscape. There she had been safe from the falling rain until the last of the drops had fallen from the sky. Only when the clouds finally began to part did she finally retreat from her dry haven. Facing the warm blue skies, she smiled softly at the vibrant rainbow that sprawled across one side of the horizon to the other.

She walked lightly upon the ground, managing to keep enough grass below her hooves to avoid most of the sticky mud that would cling to her legs for weeks if it were able. Just as she thought she had made it through the worst of it, her front hoof sunk deep, the mud squelching up to grip on her pale white and rainbow fur. Grimacing, she struggled to get it free before stumbling forward a few steps. "Honestly?" She criticized her own stupidity, trying to shake the mud free, though she gave up several moments later.

With a roll of her eyes, she cast an annoyed glance at the heavens. She didn't know exactly what she was looking for. Returning her gaze to the surrounding scene, she noticed a dark hued stallion a ways off. With a grin, she changed her course to head in his direction. Encounters with strangers always excited her. It was this aspect of her personality in which she varied so greatly from the catious nature of her worried mother. As she approched, Spell could see the rainbow marking adorning his pelt. Her grin grew wider. Calling out to the stranger, she gradually stopped progresses when she was only a few paces away. "Hey, you're just like me!" Her mindful innocence often forgot that the other Soquili could not follow her train of though. To make it more obvious, she emphasized a gesture with her nose towards the rainbow markings on his pelt.

That is, until she saw the claws half hidden in the grass. Her eyes grew large and she stumbled back a step. "Maybe not." She backed up another step. Her mother had told her of the Skinwalker that had destroyed her own parents when her mother had been a small foal. A devilish grin. Soulless eyes. And claws. The usual strong mare took another fearful step back. "Please don't eat me, Skinwalker." She, of course, had no idea what a Harpy was or that such a species even existed. And to be fair, she had never seen a Skinwalker either. All she could imagine in her mind was the claws. Tearing. Ripping. The source of childhood nightmares incarnated.

Rave almost felt helpless with the mud caking up around his talons; made it hard to walk. Giving a small sigh of frustration he tried to break free of the mud by lifting his front leg up and spreading his claws. His ears twitched to the sound of a voice and he turned to glance in a direction of a mare heading his way. First thing he noticed was the colors of her pelt and her long flowing mane. The mare was greeting him in a friendly manner but it soon turned to her cowering away from him begging for her life to be spared. The word skinwalker was thrown his way and once again he wasn’t so sure what type of breed that was but heard some stories about the vicious brutes.

“Skinwalker..?” he gave a questionable look to her.

Shaking his head caused a few drops of water which still clung to his feathers to flick off. The half harpy always found it odd when he had normal responses to his appearance but this was one he was always expecting.

“I’m harpy well more like half-harpy.” though he would admit it wasn’t something he was proud of saying. He knew if this mare had come in contact with a harpy female the chances of a civil meeting was moot. However even though he had the harpy blood running through his very existence he didn’t have much of a violent nature. Rave took a few steps further and his pupil-less eyes focused on her “Don’t be afraid, I won’t harm you.” his voice was gentle.

The questionable look with which he regarded her question surprised her. Spell flicked an ear back and tilted her head curiously. He didn’t seem so violent or about to rip her throat out. He didn’t seem angry at all actually. She stopped her slow retreat, even taking a step forward again to get a better look. But the claws? It didn’t make sense. If this Soquili’s words were to be trusted, he didn’t even know what a Skinwalker really was. And the feathers that seemed to make up his mane didn’t seem to make sense either. Hmm.

“I’m harpy well more like half-harpy.” Harpy? Spellbound drifted forward again. He didn’t sound very happy with the idea either. Maybe that was why he was wondering alone out here. ”What the heck is a harpy?” There was no anger or aggression in her words, the fear from moments before had vanished. She had been taught to fear Skinwalkers above all else. If that prospect was out of the picture, she no longer had any reason to be afraid. Her usual curiously open persona returned.

”I’m sorry for being afraid.” Her words were calm and she spoke with a soft shrug. ”You are quite frightening at first glance.” She said this in a matter of fact way without any attempt to make the stallion feel bad for it. She lowered her head to look at the large claws that he had instead of hooves. They were actually kind of cool. ”I must seem like such a scardy cat.” She said with a soft laugh, a smile growing on her face.

He watched her with amusement and kept his serious yet calm look. The half harpy gave a nod when she spoke of his species. Perhaps the harpy race wasn’t a very common race since she wasn’t sure of his species. His soulless eyes blinked “A harpy is almost birdlike but cannot fly.” he simply told her. Rave listened to her as she rambled about her shock of his appearance at first just smirked a little.

“I’m not surprised by your reaction. I find it unusual when someone isn’t shocked at first.”

Rave felt his appearance was rather alarming with his rather sharp talons and his spooky looking eyes. His brother didn’t reflect much fearful with his half harpy feet and hooves of a regular. Though he was able to be born with wings that he could fly with; yet Rave was not blessed with the gift of flight. He still wondered why his brother bothered staying in the flock to become a slave to those harpies. The thoughts flying through his mind made his eyes slant in a glare of aggravation. He shook his head trying to rid those thoughts so he wouldn't frigthen her more.

"I'm Rave." he introduced himself.

Birdlike but cannot fly. It seemed an unfortunate combination. It seemed if one was close enough as to be referred to birdlike, it was quite an unfortunate occurrence to not also be given the right to claim the sky. She grimaced inside a little at his response to her first reaction of him, feeling guilty. She shouldn’t have treated him with such foreign regard. He must get it enough from other Soquili. He shouldn’t have received such a welcome from herself, especially since she was raised by her mother under the open minded acceptance of those who are different.

A thought seemed to cross his mind, resulting in the narrowing of his gaze. It was then that she first noticed his eyes. They were a deep blue that seemed to shine from within. No pupil. How strange. She had never seen their equal. Distracted enough was she that she almost didn’t hear his name. Flustered at being caught off ground, she managed a grin. ”Oh, I’m Spellbound.” With a playful mock bow, she corrected herself. ”I go by Spell though. It’s easier.” She had never really found a use for her full name. It was too long for her taste. Short and sweet was the way she preferred it.

”I like your eyes.” Short and sweet also meant blunt. There was no point in beating around the bush when there were things to say. ”Is that another Harpy thing?” It was the pupiless eyes she was curious about. But then again, Harpy's in general were immediately an object of focus. She had never heard of their existence before.

Rave noticed the long pause of silence and was wondering what was running through her mind. Perhaps she was disgusted by his appearance or maybe fearful of it? The half harpy was almost expecting this conversation and meeting to end right after he gave her; his name. Though he was delighted when she had finally answered and the wave of uneasy feeling could pass.

"Spell then? Rather nice name." he complimented.

He thought back on the question about his eyes and tried to recall what all the harpies in his past flock. Giving a slight nod"Though the offspring might look different depending on the father's look." his brother looked more like his father with slight harpy appearance.

"Though if I were you I wouldn't ever venture into a flock." he warned.

Spell found the tension in her muscles beginning to sweep away slowly as she relaxed again. The fight or flight instinct that had seized hold of her entire body out of the belief she had encountered a skinwalker began to fade. This stallion seemed like the nice sort. He seemed to be quite polite and she felt another flicker of guilt at judging him so severely at first glance. She broke out into a happy grin when he complimented her name. Giving a polite nod in his direction, she murmured "And yours as well." Not surprisingly, she was momentarily once again distracted by the information she had just acquired. Not only had she learned the existence of Harpies but now she was standing here and having a conversation with one. A curious day indeed but so far, she quite rather enjoyed the sudden turn of events.

The statement that the general appearance of a half-Harpy hybrid could changed based on the identity of the father was another curious fact that caught the mare's attention. Interesting indeed. "Are there more like you?" She asked unabashedly before wishing she could take back her abrupt words. "I mean, not full Harpy." Offhandedly, she wondered whether Harpys were a family oriented species or not. She herself had always had a rather large roaming family spread out far across the Kawani lands and the mountains beyond. "Why should I avoid the flock?" She asked innocently. She assumed that if Rave was such a gentlemen, maybe the rest of the Harpys were the same? You can't blame her for her ignorance. She didn't know any better.
