The sun was high in the morning sky. Already, the world was stacked against Zephyranth. It was rare that she left her fathers side, even more so that she left the safety of the lighthouse or even that of the beaches. However, today something called to her. She decided to head off into the island, part of her justified it as being a means to find her mother and siblings. She had hoped, secretly that as she wandered the woods she would come across them. But it seemed that luck was against her today. Huffing she sat down on a fallen log with a loud, hard, huff. Her glasses sliding down the bridge of her nose as she closed her eyes.

Styx stalked underneath a bush a she stalked her prey... She was the mighty hunter, and only she would be able to catch the small, nearly invisible beast that buzzed as it hovered just above the ground! Such was worthy of being hunted by the small Ulaya. She bared small teeth in a grin and sprang out wildly, tumbling down a short slope before crashing into a fallen log.
Shaking herself and standing back up on her stubby legs, she stuck her tongue out at the log. She hadn't needed any help in stopping her- Wait a minute! The small grin returned. A small puff of yellow stuck up from over the edge of the log... Bunching herself back up, Styx pounced.

It happened in a split second. One moment she was laying there, the next there was something small, fluffy and vicious upon her. At least she perceived it to be vicious. Quickly, she rolled off the log and jumped back trying to get a better look at her assailant. Turning left and right quickly, before her eyes settled on the small ball of fur. Raising her paw she nudged her glasses back up as she leaned down, her braid falling beside her face. "Hey...you...are you ok?" she said in a half growling tone, her body tensing in case it wanted to fight.

Hmm... It seemed the small yellow fluffy thing was actually a BIG yellow fluffy thing! Styx's eyes went wide with wonder as she said as much. "You're a BIG yellow fluffy!" She cocked her head, totally ignoring the question she had been asked. "How'd you do it?! One minute I thought you were a small yellow fluffy but you're actually a huge yellow fluffy!"
A big yellow fluffy with glasses and reeeally long hair with red stuff in it and swirlies on it's feet and- WOAH. "You're pretty~!" Styx purred with awe of the big yellow fluffy thing. Cocking her head to the other side, she asked, "What are you?!"

Zephy stared blankly at the small, bright fluff in astonishment. She couldn't believe that this thing, this child was calling her 'fluffy'. With a sneer she stepped back, already she was annoyed. " For your information little one, I've always been a 'big yellow fluffy'. Not that I am fluffy at all. YOU are fluffy." she scowled before her expression grew to one of slight concern, surly this kit couldn't have been dumb enough to ask her what she was. "I am me." she said with a curt tone, "an ulaya...just like you...well not just like you. I feel I look far better...." she had paused with this remark, cocking her head to the side much like the kit. "Where are your parents. Aren't you a little young to be out and about on your own?"

What was the matter with the big yellow fluffy thing...? "If you're not fluffy, then what'dya call that?" Styx asked, pointing to Zephy's tail. "And those." Her paw moved to point at her ear tips, and then the end of the braid of hair. The paw then moved down, and her head cocked the other way again. "What's the matter?" The small kit took a step forward to even out the distance.
"Ul-ya-a? U-la-ya?" Styx tried to pronounce the word. "Never heard of 'em. And parents? What're those?" Oh, oh! Maybe she was talking about the pretty lady who checked up on Styx every day or so! "You mean Ophi? Well, she has a longer name but I can't really pronounce it right so I shortened it to Ophi. But she doesn't look anything like you. She's got these spirally horn thingys and a really long tail. And she's not quite as pretty..."

She sighed, opening her mouth as if to reply sarcastically before closing it shut for the moment, staring down the kit. "Surely if this Ophi looks like you she could be your mother..." she said with a pause, "Unless..." she thought about her father and how he always told her how lucky she was he was in her life. Unlike him, she had parents. He told her as one of her bedtime stories when she was a kit about how he woke, crawling out of his warm, safe box. To realize he was alone, no one came to him, no one to take care of him. It was just him and his dirty old lighthouse. This thought made her cringe, with small shivers up and down her spine, deep into her tail as it flickered.
"Does Ophi know where you are?" she asked, shaking that horrible story from her mind. "Parent or not, she must be worried about you..." Zephy pulled her face down to the kit's level. "Come, we get you home..." she stood proud, looking around feeling like she was doing something good for once as she looked around. "Come you, lead the way."

Styx blinked. "Ophi doesn't look anything like me. I was in this dark square thingy for a long time and when I got out Ophi was there. Why, is she supposed to look like me? 'Cause she doesn't. I'm all neon and she's all brown and she has these reeeally big horn thingys." She took a great gulp of air. Talking so much in one breath really wasn't a good idea. "Oh, and by the way you shouldn't try to talk a whole lot on one breath of air 'cause it kinda hurts a little when you stop."
Her little tail thumped once as she thought about Ophi. "No, but she always finds me. I dunno how. Every morning she checks on me, gives me breakfast and then leaves and I don't see her 'til the next day. Although there was this one time I was attacked by this thing that looked kinda like you only it had tiny bat wings and tried to kill me! Ophi turned up outta nowhere, killed it, and disapeared. And all was right in the world~!"

Raising her paw, sliding it under her glasses rubbing at her eyes. Already, this little ball of fluff was grating on her. Adjusting her glasses she couldn't help but give a small laugh. "You need to breathe to live you know. Perhaps you should speak slower it wont leave you in any form of pain. It's not a race to get your words out." She padded around the little fluff for a moment, watching it thump it's tail. "Well good, if she always finds you it shouldn't be an issue leaving you here." She said as she pursed her lips turning to jump up on the big log. Looking back once more before hoping down and over.
She hoped it would be ok to leave it there. "I mean it did say that someone would eventually come for it..." she thought to herself as she pressed her back up against the log, debating with herself. "But it is a small kit....what if something...eats it." she closed her eyes scrunching her face.

Styx grinned broadly when the big yellow fluffy laughed, even if it was a small one. The big yellow fluffy needed to laugh more, 'cause otherwise she might give people the impression she was a grouch and Styx didn't think the big yellow fluffy wanted people to think that. And now the big yellow fluffy thing was leaving. Oh wel- Wait, Styx didn't want the big yellow fluffy to leave! Sure, Ophi would come visit in the morning but she didn't stay all day and the big yellow fluffy was fun to mess with!
Quietly Styx walked around the log and stood in front of the big yellow fluffy, who had her face all scrunched up and her eyes were closed and she was muttering to herself. Why was the big yellow fluffy muttering to herself...? And more importantly, Styx was not an 'it'!
"Styx is not an it! Styx is Styx."

Opening her eyes, she let out a small gasp. Looking at the little fluff. "Whoa! hey...back it up a little." she laughed for a moment. "Ok..ok so your name is Styx. What an unusual name, don'tcha think?" she said a little weary that styx had decided to follow her and yet relieved at the fact.
"Well then Styx...my name is Zephyranth but you can just call me Zephy..I guess." She was a little uneasy at that, the only other person to call her Zephy was her sisters and her brother, though she hated when he used that tone with her. He always had a way of making her feel so small. "So..why are you following me little styx?"

Styx obediently took a step back; 'cause since she was trying to get the big yellow fluffy to stick around it might be nice to be polite. She wasn't really sure about what 'polite' meant, but Ophi said it involved doing as you're told. Maybe that was why it was hard to get- she didn't really like doing as she was told. It was BOOOORING. Ophi also said that if she wanted to be her sub-or-din-ate or whatever it was, then she had to be more polite. She hoped that being a sub-or-din-ate wasn't as boring as being polite... Styx didn't like boring.
Styx beamed at the comment on her name. "It means 'The River of Pain'! Or was it 'The River of Misery'...? Oh well. Styx wonders sometimes why she was named that because Styx doesn't really think she resembles a river of pain and or misery, but oh well. Zephy is a pretty name~! Whatsit mean?"
"And Styx is following Zephy because Zephy is nice and cares about Styx. Most just give Styx a mean look and walk away."

"Care about you eh? And where do you gather that from?" she said in a cool tone, adjusting her glasses once more. "Aren't you awfully bright to be considered something so...miserable?" She reached her paw out gently and slowly resting it on Styx's head. "My father named he. He hoped I would be a boy but unfortunately for him, Mother left him with a girl and took the boy with her."
She gave her paw a small shake, wiggling the kit's head back and fourth. "Well...I wont...give you much more of a mean look. Not that I feel I am, but I guess I can play a game with you if you like. I still have time before I should get back to work. Since today already seems a bust."

Styx looked cross-eyed at Zephy's paw, not quite sure what to think for once. Ohpi did that sometimes when she needed to say something Styx didn't particularly want to hear, such as after she had killed that Ulaya.
"That wasn't very nice of Mother. Why'd she do that to Zephy's father...? What's a father?" Styx wasn't sure what a father was. Not to mention what a strange name 'Mother' was! It still wasn't very nice of Mother to take away father's boy. What was a boy, anyway...? Oh well, Ophi'd tell her when Styx saw her next.
Styx's whole body swayed slightly as Zephy wiggled her head back and fourth. Blinking, she asked, "Game...? What's a 'game'? How do you play with it? And why is today a bust?" Sooooo maaaany things Styx didn't know! "Does Zephy want Styx to help with Zephy's work...?"

She gave a soft smile. It was something very unlike her, but she couldn't help it. The complete innocence in Styx gave her an uneasy sense of comfort. It was something she was not very accustomed to.
"To put it as truthfully and blunt as I can. She did it because my father is a mean and hateful man and my brother is kinder than that. Mother wished to keep him from being cruel like him. That is not to say that my Father is a bad man, mind you." she paused, adjusting her glasses once more.
"He's very caring in his own unique way. He may be strict and mean but I know he loves me and my siblings, even my Mother." Her smile faded, "How do you not know what a game is? Hmmm..." she sat back down, thinking about what would be the easiest to describe. "A game, something two or more people play. For example Tag. I touch you and run, your job is to run after me and touch me and then I become it."
