The earliest mention of vampires that I could find would be from around 100BC. It is what would become the Camazotz God of the Mayans. Camazotz was a Bat God and he was associated with night, death and sacrifice. He has also been identified with another Mayan God named Zotzilaha Chamalcan, the God of Fire. It was said he is a large creature with the head of a Bat. whose manners were very similar to the lore of the vampire except that the camazotz did not infect anybody with the disease, those who made contact would eventually die. There is a bat species in a cavern in Oaxaca, Mexico named camazotz because of this legend and also it is the same cavern that they say that the camazotz god dwells to this day.

there is a similar vampirelike creature mentioned in folklore of Peru and Chile. It is called chonchon and it is said that after a persons death, if they are infected, their head will grow ears out like wings and lift off from the shoulders leaving the body headless.

In Brazil in the 1800's 2 "winged humaniods" were spotted in a tree by an elder couple.

In Romania, they were known as moroi or strigoi and were considered the living dead. They were "reanimated" dead who walked around, attacked and sucked blood from their victems. they were said to bite a person between the eyes or over their heart. There is also the ever-famous Vlad III the Impaler from romania and he is the inspiration of Bram Stoker's book Dracula.
