She had been following him for a short while now. How surprised had she been when he popped out of no where, and reminded her of everything he had done to her? Those losses were unacceptable to her now. Who was this senshi to best her not once, but almost twice? True, the second time had been a bit hectic for everyone, but she still didn't walk away from it thinking herself the victor.

And that needed to be remedied.

So she followed the Senshi that had handed her butt to her before, when she was new and fresh to the fighting scene, when she had no idea what she was really doing. She was going to show him exactly how far she had come, and there was no way he'd be able to best her like last time. She knew all about him, after all. His attacks, the routes he'd been taking, the way he favored his shoulder.

Tonight Painite was waiting for Regulus, with a trap set and waiting. She was standing in the middle of the street, right where he would be walking, powered up and waiting for him to sense her. The closer he got, the worse it would be for him. There was a padded bear trap hidden under a sheet of newspaper. Designed to trap, not severely wound, she wanted simply to catch him.

She wouldn't summon her javelin until she had him stuck. Then she'd introduce him to the weapon, up close and personal style.

Regulus stifled a yawn as he jumped down to a lower rooftop. It had been a long night already of studying, and he'd decided to get in some patrol time afterward, though he was thinking that might have been a mistake. He was desperate for caffeine, or sleep, and he wasn't getting either up here, and the lack of either wasn't going to put him in top form. At least if he did find a youma to battle he knew he'd go to bed so hard he'd be sure to fall asleep at once.

This probably had something to do with why he failed to notice the slightly unusual way the newspaper was lying on the lower patch ahead as he jumped down.

The sudden snap and painful vice grip around his ankle threw him for a loop, stumbling and skipping as he tried to catch his balance again, and praying that whatever the hell had happened hadn't just broken his ankle. He'd gone through that once, and he had no desire to go through another nightmare round of getting off a roof with a broken ankle and spending time in a cast.

"SON OF A!"

The bear trap was hammered into the ground, though it wasn't the most permanent of settings. Painite could only do some much, after all, but she had nailed the chain into the ground with a spike and a hammer. She was pretty sure of it, since she had hammered it down while powered up, but there was no telling how long it might hold with a senshi pulling at it.

Especially a stronger than normal one. Super senshi, or whatever silly name they gave themselves.

The Captain wasn't scared of them anymore. Not like she had been following her fight with him, which left her bleeding behind a dumpster. No, she was not going to let anyone do that to her, ever again. Least of all the same Senshi that had nearly thrown her off from her goal to be the greatest devious mind the Negaverse had ever known. She grinned when she saw him in her trap, standing not too far down the street still.

"Oh Senshi!" She called, summoning the Spirit of Mr. Saddles to her hand. She walked toward him, a grin on her face. "How good to see you again! Looks like you're the one dropping down into a fight you can't win this time, hm?"

She chuckled, loving the reversal here. She felt powerful, in control. She loved the feeling.

"You? Seriously?" he snarled. "Oh hey you ditched the kids toy... thats so adorable. It's like seeing a little psycho all grown up!"

He wished she hadn't, since he didn't like the look of that new weapon. Senshi were fast, but the Negaverse was strong, and it seemed like he was suddenly obliged to stand his ground.

"Did your costume get an upgrade to flame retardant too?" He demanded, raising his hands in a warning gesture, preparing to attack.

"That's an interesting question!" Painite laughed, knowing all too well that he had those blasted fire attacks to play with. But she was going to get to him before he had a chance to use them. Let him think he had a chance, but she was certain she could succeed. He had no chance against her now.

He would get to feel how she had felt after their first meeting.

She fully intended on letting him get away from this fight, unless things got too far out of her design and she had to make a drastic decision. It was dangerous to play with her targets, but she wanted to taunt him. She wanted to let him suffer and, above all else, she wanted him to remember her. Fear her.

And regret ever hurting her.

"Too bad you won't get to find out!" She laughed, and then she charged forward a few steps, only to get some momentum. She was still far enough away from him for it, but close enough that she was confident in her aim. She threw the javelin as hard as she could, aiming for his shoulder and hoping a sudden gust of wind, or worse aim than she thought, took it off target.

Aw... crap on a big pointy stick. Regulus' expression conveyed this thought, and probably a few more other creative and wordless analogys, as Painite launched her weapon. He'd really been hoping that she'd treat the thing like a spear or lance, hold onto it, and come in close. CHUCKING it at him like an extra from an Safari movie -really- wasn't what he'd been counting on. So much for her earlier claims of never killing anyone, she sure seemed bound and determined to try tonight!

He gave a frantic jerk on the beartrap, trying with the limited length of chain to twist or bend out of the way, and sending an flare of pain up from his mashed ankle that was a near match for the line of pain that came blazing in the wake of the Javelin that, thanks to the frantic twist and jerk, didn't impale him like an insect but ripped an path across the front of his chest and collar bone, leaving an bloody and red shallow swatch that made a slightly skewed cross when matched against the surgical scars from the careful removal of Sassolite's arrow in the wake of the Elysion battles.

It was all kinds of not thrilling to note how action oriented that point was, and he wasn't keen to give her any more chances to test her Gold Medalist skills.

"Noble Claws of the Lion!" He retaliated, desperately, which hurt like a b*****d in and of itself, but at least he wasn't half dead on his feet. The discomfort, doubt, and a stiff, newly in pain shoulder did little to help his aim at least with one hand, but they were at least pointed in more or less the right direction.

Painite had come a long way since her first fight with the senshi. She was more determined, more sure of herself, and though she still had never killed anyone, at least not directly and on purpose as far as she knew, she was more willing to do what she needed to for the negaverse. And for herself.

This? This was for herself.

She saw the javelin move past the senshi, which told her that she had not managed to impale him, obviously. She was not happy about that, but she moved toward him determinedly.

"You're going to attack me, Senshi?" She yelled, as he started to call his attack, "my trapped little rat, struggling for freedom! Fine! But it won't get you anywhere!"

Of course, it might. She braced herself, summoning her weapon back to her hand. She was getting good at that, at least. But she wasn't sure she could defend against his attack, those knives that burned and cut and hurt her before, even with her weapon in hand. She was certainly going to try. first instinct, which kicked in while she was yelling, was to leap backwards and get back as far as she could. See if it had a distance limit.

Second instinct? Throw the damn javelin at him again.

"Damn straight I'm going to attack!" He snarled back. "Noble Claws of the Lion!" He fired a second angry volley, grimacing she retreated. One of the problems he'd noted, that most negas didn't have the range to take advantage of, was that the claws tended to spread out, which meant that in a large crowd they'd hit more enemies, but against one on one ranged opponents, he'd already figured out the problem.

He needed to get the hell out of this bear trap, but there wasn't anything to pry it open with, and she could recall that damn spear, and prying at it with his hands or going for the senshi-phone might well get him impaled.

He jerked hastily again, nearly falling over as the chain caught him up short, which made the javelin miss this time, but didn't make his throbbing ankle feel any better.

Painite growled. She wasn't expecting him to be so exuberant. It was like he didn't want to die or something. What was up with that? She was entitled to her revenge, damn it, and he should be more aware of his role in it.

But then, if he just sat back and let her hurt or kill him, it wouldn't be as satisfying in the end.

At least the distance she had between him and herself was helping her. She did get hit by two of the burning, cutting magic knives, and she cursed up and down in a surprisingly British way. She was confident he wouldn't be going anywhere, so she had time to spare as far as reacting to the burns and cuts was concerned. And she was theatrical about it indeed, righteous anger flaring up and a monologue about how futile his resistance was boiling up in the back of her throat.

The chain that held the bear trap strained at his efforts, but the links were solid. The only thing that was not as strong was the spike holding the chain to the concrete. She had hammered it in as best she could, but she was no railway worker. It lost some of its depth at each tug, and would come loose with only a few more.

Summoning her javelin once more, she looked at him with an eager fire burning in her eyes.

"Give it up, Senshi! You'll just wear yourself out and then what fun will it be? Just take it like a man! You're mine now, and I'm going to make sure you never forget the mistake you made, so long ago. You should never have messed with Painite."

She lunged toward him then, taking the risk of getting closer to build up speed for her attack, once again aimed at what she thought was his weak point: his shoulder.

Regulus eyes narrowed and his fists clenched as she charged toward him, this though, was a far more advantageous situation for him. She was furious and she was getting closer.

"Give up? To a twisted liar and a killer?" She'd been so furious the first time he'd accused her of being just another murderous negaverse agent, he hoped that it would still get a rise.

His heart was a lions roar in his ears, and everything had the twitchy sped up edge of a flood of adrenaline. He just had to wait, wait for the last second. Limited movement range was still movement.

He held his ground as long has he dared, fight or flight chemicals making him hyper aware of the itchy path of nervous sweat down his neck and back, and then, when she was absolutely as close as he dared let her get....

With his unpleasant and painful offensive senshi powers, Regulus didn't often have to resort to blows, and often only used them as punctuation marks on the combat, if at all, like when he'd kicked Painite in the head.

If he was using it for punctuation this time, however, it was as an exclamation point, jumping up to the limit he could with most of his weight on one leg, and lashing out with a savage, senshi fast kick with his free leg. He didn't have Negaverse strength, but he had speed and a pretty solid pair of boots with treads. He was reasonably sure he'd land on his a** from the recoil of the kick, and more than likely take another gouge from the damn javelin, but it was crucial to try, crucial to demonstrate that he wasn't going down easily. Besides, the kick was largely a distraction, to be followed by a hasty and close range volley of "Noble Claws" as he fell, or from the ground if need be.

"My Pride won't allow it!!"

"I am not a killer! Not yet! But if you want me to be, I can very easily start with you!" Painite yelled back, grinning ear to ear but the expression was forced. Her eyebrows were furrowed and she was furious, the light in her eyes hard and intent.

She remembered the first time he said something like that to her. It felt like she had been as confused then as she sometimes felt these days. As far as killing senshi went, she felt like she was making progress only to hit a wall. Kill them, yes, they deserved it. It was part of the job. Then they throw things in like goddamn baby senshi, little kids in elementary school at the very best, and what was she supposed to do with that? Stab it in the face?

No.

But this senshi wasn't a kid. He was a teenager. He was a super senshi, in fact. He had hurt her and she had hunted him. But not to kill him, no. To make him suffer. To make him regret. And she wasn't doing that very well at the moment.

He attacked her and she did not back down. She saw his foot coming, saw where it was going to hit her, and knew she couldn't get out of the way. She didn't waste time trying to. She kept charging with her goal in sight, driving the javelin forward. As long as she hit him somewhere, she would be happy.

She jerked her arm forward when she felt herself go flying backwards from the kick and flurry of painful, fiery knives. She hit the ground almost at the same time he did, crying out in pain.

"Your pride can go ******** itself!"

"You'll just prove us right if you do." He snarled, when the pain subsided enough to let him talk again. His shoulders ached, his back ached, his ankle ached, his injuries burned... "But clearly I can't count on you to prove me WRONG."

He reached down hastily to wrap his hands around the chain attaching the trap to the roof. He didn't have long before she'd recover her own feet, but he'd take what time he had to get some mobility. If nothing else, if he was loose he could kick her with the foot with the trap on it, as long as he could get it loose.

He tried to ignore the fact that he was bleeding from his injuries. There wasn't time to think about or take stock of having been aggressively stabbed with a javelin, he had to get out of here first. Was she crazy? Really she could have easily killed him on the first damn throw.

Painite, despite her common nickname, was not a person fond of actual pain. She certainly didn't mind dishing it out, especially with her javelin and her increasingly dangerous traps and plots, but being hit with burning, cutting knives? Being punched and kicked? Having to heal herself more often than not, or spend days she could be earning money at home from the news room?

Not fun.

She got to her feet slowly, in time to see him pulling free of her trap. Goddamn it! Okay, it was time to flee, regroup, and come after him again later. Hadn't she done what she said she would? She hurt him, made him know she was not messing around any more, and now he thought she was ready to kill him. She had, in her own way, definitely won. Totally. There was no shame in beating a strategic retreat.

No, it wasn't a retreat. She was leaving because she was done with the fight.

"Remember this moment, Senshi! It will be the happiest memory for you, compared to what's in store!" She took a moment to mentally pat herself on the back. That sounded pretty intense. She grinned triumphantly, standing and acting like she wasn't in terrible pain and wasn't concerned about the blood on her uniform. And then she shut her eyes and, with a face like a very young child focusing very hard on her times tables, teleported away.
