Paul's idea of fun comprised of spending the day playing piano and writing. Usually his days included a lot more activities, like... going to his anatomy courses... doing his organic chem homework... but he always, always, always found time for a little writing and a bit of piano, especially now that he was out of Sovereign Heights' dorms and had the little stand-up piano in his apartment.
Today was a Sunday. That meant his homework was done and he was free to do whatever he liked. Whatever he liked--today, that meant going to a small store near where Vera lived to buy a new journal. He'd filled two of them in the past week, and while he didn't strictly need a new classwork journal, he certainly needed a new personal one. This shop was a little further away from his usual haunts, but he had chosen it because, well... He would be lying if he said that he didn't hope to see Vera. He did, even if it was a long shot--especially now that he knew she was Vivianite.
Did that make him creepy? He chafed a hand across his chin as he considered the stack of journals before him. Perhaps. It really depended, he decided, on his intentions. Since they were good... Well, hopefully.

She'd run out of paper. Under normal circumstances, this would not have been something that elicited panic in Vera, however, she had an English report due the next day that had just been begging for calligraphy on the cover page.
But there'd been none of her good paper left. After searching her apartment from top to bottom, she'd given up once the neatly shredded remains of her last package had been found underneath her bed. She wasn't entirely sure who was to blame for that one, Grendel or Olive. It was a moot point, really.
Fortunately, there was a small store within walking distance of her complex that sold stationary supplies, including her favorite paper, pens, and ink. It was conveniently close to the bus stop she normally used, and Vera tended to stop in a few times a week after school, chatting with the owner....and avoiding the pleasant woman's rather less pleasant son. He was several years older than Vera, though that didn't stop him from trying to hit on her.
She'd already grabbed a pack of paper and was looking at a set of pens in an effort to put off going up to the counter and enduring another round of awkward pick-up lines. There was a set of pens she really wanted to look at....but they were up on a tall shelf, out of her reach. Even if she stood on tiptoes, which was just unfair.

The journals dutifully rifled through, he'd decided on a new black one. It would match the others, while not looking... too matchy, since the texture was more soft, scraped leather than the boiled leather of his usual notebook. The two would be easily distinguishable. Still, his presence in the shop reminded him that he wanted a new bottle of ink. The last had been left out in the open air by his cousin's girlfriend, and he really didn't want to use reconstituted ink in his journals.
As he moved towards the display of inks--maybe he could get a new color? Green? he was finding himself very newly fond of green--he spotted a familiar head of raspberry hair. Was that... He leaned back, and then a smile broke across his face. Vera! Excellent!
(Creeping apparently paid off.)
"Let me help you," he said, reaching up to pull the pens she was reaching for off the high shelf. He handed it to her and smiled; it'd been a bit since he'd seen her, anyway, and it was such a thrill to see her again. "How are things, Vera?"

She's decided, regretfully, to give up on the pens for today when a familiar voice sounded behind her. Spinning around fast enough to make the tail ends of her hair smack lightly into the shelves next to her, Vera's face broke out in an answering smile once she saw Paul.
Paul holding out the pack of pens she'd been wanting, no less. "Thank you," she said gravely, taking the package, though she didn't examine them. "Oh," a pause while she ordered her thoughts, "They're alright." School was almost over and the teen was almost graduated, which automatically made everything much better. On the minus side was, well, practically everything to do with being Vivianite. One of the exceptions to that was currently talking to her, putting Vera's general state of being at something approaching happy. "How've you been? Keeping busy?"

His eyes didn't leave her face as she spoke; it unnerved Grayson when he did that, displayed that much conscious attention. Usually, though, he felt a lot less fond of his cousin than he did of Vivianite or Vera. They'd gone out to collect energy together just a few nights before, but it felt like it had been so much longer than that. "Somewhat busy," he said, shrugging a little self-consciously. "I'm in a new apartment, with my cousin. Transferred to DCU, but you know that. Summer classes start in a week or two, so I won't have much time for extracurricular activities as I did."
Which was a somewhat stealthy way of telling her that they might not get to spend as much time together. It was also one of the biggest regrets of his (well, his mother's) decision to get him through his pre-med degree as fast as he could. He'd rather spend time working for the glory of the Negaverse with one of his few friends than studying the function of the diaphragm, and how the vast majority of the human race breathed improperly.
Hell, he'd rather sit at home and practice piano. For someone who had pushed him so hard to master piano, his mother surely seemed very displeased with his attachment to the instrument.
Still, he had to stick with his education, he supposed. "What are your plans after you graduate," he asked, "and were you looking for anything else, while you're here?"

Vera was either less easily unnerved than Grayson, or unaware that paying that much attention to someone was unusual. Either way, she didn't seem particularly bothered by the fact that Paul was essentially staring at her. "That's...too bad," she replied softly, breaking eye contact and looking at the floor for just a moment. She'd gotten used to going on patrol with Spinel and it would be very strange to go back to solo work, or patrolling with almost anyone else. "But I will still see you around?" The question was hopeful, asked as she raised her gaze back up to Paul's face with a small smile.
She rocked back and forth slightly at the question, then shook her head slightly. "I...haven't really thought about it. Probably Sovereign Heights," she added after a moment, wrinkling her nose slightly at the thought of more school.
"Oh, um. I don't think so. I've got the paper I came for, and the pens as well." Vera paused for a moment, trying to think of a way to extend the conversation while still getting out of the store and away from the creep at the register. "How about you?"

He frowned as she looked away, and then he ran a hand over his hair. Had he been bothering her? Paul worried a lot about Vera finding him odd, but honestly he just... she was so interesting. "Of course," he assured her, nodding his head and patting her on the shoulder. They moved up the line a bit, and he tapped the new leather-bound journal against his hip. Could he get away with buying her things for her? Probably not, but... maybe he could persuade her to go to a cafe, rather than straight home. He did like spending time with people he wasn't somehow related to, after all. This was a rare opportunity and one he didn't want to give up.
"Sovereign is a good school," he allowed. "A lot like Meadowview, though. Just with dormitories... Are you going to live there?" Her mother paid for Vera's apartment, though, didn't she? Why would Vera choose to leave her own place for a dormitory? Maybe for the independence, but...
With a shrug, he held up the leather-bound journal. "Yes, this is all I wanted to get. Ran out of pages in the old journal."
