How long had it been since Ijn had returned to her home and family? It felt almost like an eternity, as though she had never left in the first place. She lifted her head from the fresh grasses mid-spring had brought and turned to look over her shoulder. She knew somewhere in the trees of the mainland forest behind her, her parents were going about their own daily rituals. The thought made her feel safe, secure and gave her a sense of belonging. She almost couldn't understand why she had ever left in the first place.
Almost.
A warm wind stirred over the plains carrying the scent of growing grass and the faint salty smell of the sea. Ijn turned into it and closed her eyes breathing it all in deep. It filled her with a feeling the opposed everything her family offered. A feeling of being unsettled, of longing, of anxiety. As much as she had come to love her family it still felt as though there was somewhere else she should go. Something else she should do.
She frowned. Sure, she felt all of that but what exactly was there out there for her to do? Ijn just didn't know.

Adeline had no particular goal in mind as she stepped out from the shadowy nook where she spent the night into the wonderful green grass. She was a young mare, fresh out of foalhood, and she was out to experience life on her own for the first time. While she adored her brothers and her parents, her heart longed for adventure and discovery.
But her journey, so far, had been rather uneventful. While she had caught glimpses of new things and new Soquili, Adeline did not have any interesting stories to tell. At least she was enjoying her travels. The wind blew gently through her mane, and she sighed in contentment. Was this how the birds and other wild creatures felt?
She studied the grass and nibbled the tops. The grass of Spring was so much better than the dry, crunchy stuff of Winter! She made a happy sound and grazed for a while, making a small trail as she went. Adeline wasn't paying attention to much else, so she did not notice that she was not alone on the plains.

Ijn's pierced ears twitched at a sound drifting on the wind. Something was coming towards her. She turned her head quickly to figure out what and assess if it was a threat her thick braids beating against her neck with the motion. It took her roughly 20 seconds to determine that the creature approaching her wasn't anything particularly dangerous. She had half been expecting a kalona, but this one seemed more or less average. If they attacked she could probably beat them off with a couple brushes with her spiked forelegs.
She was quite sure, however, that the meeting wasn't going to come to exchanging blows. With a toss of her head to settle her forelocks she smiled and called out to the stranger with a simple hello.
She found it amazingly convenient that whenever she seemed to be feeling the most bored or confused that the world would decide to drop a solution right in front of her. She could not explain why she was so fortunate but it was hardly wise to question these things lest they stop happening. "Lovely weather isn't it?"

The sweet grass was satisfying and Adeline swished her tail in delight, enjoying the feel of the sun along the butterfly marking on her back. She knew that the sunlight on the bright colours of her coat could light her up like a beacon, but Adeline didn't care. She didn't have a very sharp sense of danger. After all, why did she need to? She was always safe and warm as a foal, so she could not see any reason for it to be any different out on her own.
So when she heard Ijn's hello, she only started briefly in surprise before she looked up and smiled. Despite the dark blankness of her eyes, they filled with warmth at the sight of the strange mare.
"Why hello!" Adeline called back, then moved in closer to red-haired mare without hesitation, so that they could speak at a comfortable distance. She nodded politely, allowing her lightly curled hair to fall around her face as it wished. "It is beautiful out here. This warmth, this wind..." She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, noticing the earthy smells and the strange tang that she did not recognize. "It's the perfect day to be out here, isn't it?"
She paused for the a moment. "Wherever here, is." She giggled. Adeline clearly wasn't worried about a thing, and her relaxed posture showed that she was completely at ease.

Ijn took a few steps towards the mare coming towards her to make the distance crossed a little smaller. Small gestures like this, she had found, made a person seem more friendly and receptive to others. Not that it really seemed like she needed to put on her friendliest face. The other seemed quite trusting and very bubbly.
When they came into closer range she noticed one other thing about the mare that caused her smile to falter for a fraction of a second. Her eyes were black as pitch all the way around. It was somewhat eerie. They didn't seem to match her at all. The rest of her, sans hair, was quite bright and cheerfully colored. Though, she supposed she had seen stranger things in her time and that settled her. Back in her calm state she beamed at the girl and listened attentively.
"Mmm, it is. The weather hasn't been better since last season." She bobbed her head a few times as though agreeing with herself. "And...here...is here...the plains..." She couldn't think of what else to say about this place. Everyone she knew just called them the plains. Something about the way she said it though was making her curious. "Do...you not know this area?"

Adeline found herself absently admiring the braids in Ijn's hair. Her closest brothers both had hair long and thick enough to give a mare mane envy, and it was always braided at the ends to keep it tidy. Her hair was shorter, more unruly, and couldn't seem to hold a braid for more than a few minutes. And that pink bow Ijn was wearing was so cute! Adeline had to remind herself that it wasn't a competition as she refocused.
The young mare eagerly listened to Ijn, curious to know what she might know that Adeline did not. Despite her naivety, Adeline was intensely interested in knowing about the things around her, and tended to remember everything that she was told. She believed that the more she knew about the world, the more beautiful it would become.
"I wonder what summer will bring," Adeline sighed, fluttering her eyes gently closed as she imagined what summer would be like. "It'll be my first real summer... Well, that I will be able to remember," she admitted.
She glanced around. "The plains. I guess... That makes sense." She giggled again, this time with a hint of nervousness. Of course that's where they were. Clearly they were not standing in a forest. 'No, I don't know this place. I've only heard about it, through my family."

Ijn couldn't stop herself, her jaw dropped. It was a completely natural reaction for a person experiencing shock and she most certainly had just gotten one. "You're...so very young." She said hardly believing it. The mare, though perhaps not the best descriptor for her, had just seemed older. If she couldn't remember her other summers then that meant the girl was young enough to be Ijn's daughter.
She could only imagine the expression on her face. Both her siblings had been trying for foals of their own for quite some time now. She hadn't heard from any of them for quite a while. For all she knew this child could be one of theirs. She doubted it. The marks and colors looked nothing like anything anyone in her family possessed. It took her several moments to recollect herself and get her mind back onto a track that made at least some logical sense.
"Heat." She said, her voice catching slightly in her throat. She cleared it and then continued. "The summer season is also called the hot season. You get long days, thunderstorms and hot weather..." It was far from Ijn's favorite season. Personally she wished that it could be spring year round. It was nice to watch everything bloom.
"I take it your family doesn't travel much." She could understand this. Her parents hadn't left the area since she had been born. "If you'd like I could show you around a bit? Perhaps even show you some of the best places to beat the heat."
