] ~ Plot ~ [

For centuries beyond human memory, all shape shifters and their kind alike have lived in peace, though they have forgotten the presence of falcons over time. Their peace has long since been broken, in hunting birds and capturing them alike; the falcons have done nothing, though, except bear a hatred for their ignorant race. It has been since then that all shape shifters have "vanished" in all sense but to themselves; they have been living among humans for generations. The falcons, however, made their home in the sky; a floating isle known as Nalani. Any kind of shape shifter is welcome; by certain standards of course. The falcons never truly got along with other species of birds, but they have never fought about it.
However, they could care less about killing humans, especially to find an escaped fugitive.
When a young member of the empress' royal guard made an attempt to kill her heir, and failed, she fled from the sacred isle to find refuge among the humans. She has stayed there for about a year in peace, but that peace is soon to end. In that year, the heir was finally able to gain audience with the empress and argued that the young falcon should be executed not only for trying to murder her, but also for treason and refusing to follow direct orders. To her advantage, said falcon had been among her Lady's favorites; but it was after so much protest and complaining that she finally gave into the heirs' request to drag her back to Nalani and execute her on the spot, with no trial for her to plead against the accusations.
Having overheard this, the heirs' son and prince of the isle too, fled, and went to find the young falcon in the hopes of being able to warn her of the dangers. This infuriated the heir, and, declaring that she would not give up until the two were found and brought back, she sent two of the empress' best guards to find them.
The humans, of course, are unaware of this turn of events, save for a few unlucky ones that get tangled up in the mess of trying to save their friends.

Kel has always been one to follow the rules, despite how ridiculous or dangerous they have become. Like any other falcon back at home, she is cold-hearted, upfront, and serious, as she was raised to be so. She was so much so that the empress allowed her to become a part of the royal guard; this she accepted, but was soon to regret. Regret came swiftly, and that was when Kel's rebellious side came into play. Instead of following orders, she shirked them; in fact, she tried to break every rule that she could while being one of the empress' favorites, and remained so despite her colleagues' protests. She became less and less like a falcon altogether, and her time with her own kind ended when she fled the isle, wanted for her attempt to murder the empress' heir. Now dwelling with humans, she has adapted to their various emotions, though she is careful to reveal her true self to the friends she has made.
Let's review the past.
Kel grew up as a typical falcon; raised to obey the empress and her heir, and all laws that were passed. She was raised to hate all other kinds of birds, but above all that, to have a hatred towards humans because they had captured and killed so many of their kind. Of course, she was also taught to be lady-like so that one day she could pick up a worthy suitor. This had succeeded in her for seventeen years of her life. When she was about sixteen (in human years), the empress requested that she be put through trials to test her strength, and if she succeeded, she would become a part of her royal guard. This Kel passed with ease, and became a member. This was when she still followed the empress and worshiped her, until, of course, she was ordered to kill her family; she threw a fit, and demanded to know why, but was never told. In protest, she shirked all of her responsibilities, and also tried to break every law that she could. She did this only because she knew she was a favorite of the empress, and remained so despite how much trouble she caused for everyone else.
But despite her attempts at refusal, the empress' heir got ahold of Kel and forced; no, threatened to seal her magic if she did not obey her command. She reluctantly obeyed, and on the night she was to slaughter her family, she instead snuck back to the castle and attempted to murder the heir instead. It was to no avail, and she was to be executed, but managed to escape to where the humans dwelled, and has been living with them for the past year or so.

Heal: She can heal herself and others to a certain extent.
Persuasion: After drawing the spell on someone's skin, she can easily convince them to believe her, etc. Only falcons can see the lines drawn.

Despite being pampered and babied his entire life, Jared is a very nice, caring, and intellectual bird. He has a passion for knowledge, though he's able to restrain himself if he feels he is prying too much. He is usually found reading, either in his chambers or the palace gardens, where he could find peace and quiet. He is known throughout Nalani not only for his charming looks, but also his sweet and considerate personality. Due to his gray hair and eyes, people on first sight tend to think he is a rather somber and emotionless person, but he couldn't be any farther. Always one to have a smile on his face, Jared is friendly and sociable to everything; when he isn't reading, of course. He is the type of person that stops to chat with a stressed, exhausted servant and make them laugh, or give a sweet smile to a depressed individual. Because of his sparkling personality, he is an important part of Nalani.

Though it does not happen often, Jared can become quite bratty and pompous. When he becomes stressed, angry, or sad, the stereotypical princely part of him clearly shows through.
Let's review the past.
Jared had had a very typical life; that is, a typical life of a prince. He is the son of the heir to Nalani's empress, and so, Prince of the isle. He was well-educated, taught by many tutors (most of them owls, who are known to be quite intelligent) for the subjects of history, science, mathematics, english, and more. He also had private coaches to keep him fit and athletic. His very first tutor was a beautiful Barn Owl, who taught him in the subjects of history and science. Her passion and interest in the subject invoked his own, and that was where his thirst for knowledge began. Of course, another factor that added to his present personality was that he quite like the tutor. She was nice and considerate, and probably whom Jared developed the traits from. Since her, Jared was a perfect, intelligent little falcon.

At around his fourteenth year, by human years, a new royal guard for the empress was accepted into a castle. It was a young female Peregrine named Kele Celestin. Jared often passed by her while she was patrolling the castle. He sometimes stopped to chat and socialize. She looked quite uncomfortable every time. Jared thought it funny how she acted so serious at a young age.

One day, news of how Kele had attempted a murder on his mother reached Jared's ears, and he was horrified. He couldn't believe that the young female would do such a thing, and stormed into the castle to confront his mother about it. For some reason, he decided not to ask her upright, but instead eavesdrop. He overheard his mother's audience with the Empress, and her orders to capture Kele, who had fled the isle, and have her executed upon her return. With horror, Jared fled and plunged down into the human world, hoping to warn Kele of the danger she was in.

Bring it on.
During his childhood years in Nalani, he was trained in the art of fencing, and so, is adept at wielding a rapier. However, since weapons were quite abnormal and suspicious in the human world, he settled for a pair of daggers, concealed with sheathes sewn inside his coat sleeves.
I have something to show you.
Shape-shifting: Can only shift from human to bird.
Empathy: Can sense or read emotions and control the feelings and emotions of others.
Innate capability Able to have skills typically earned through learning. Basically, he's a quick learner.

It had been weeks. Months. No, wait, a year. An entire year since she had left home after attempting to assassinate the Empress' Heir. She had fled for her own safety, even though she had betrayed her own kind. But she had wanted to, without remorse.

She had been ordered to kill her family, with absolutely no reason whatsoever. She had given into her emotions, as the Heir had hoped, but she was expecting Kele. She had been waiting for her, in her own chambers. And she had attempted to kill her, but failed. It was only a matter of time before they found her and brought her back to execute her for her crimes.

Morning had come. Sunlight poured through the crack in her shades and landed on the lump in her bed. She had dreamt of flying again. With a groan, Kel pulled the covers back from her face to see that her bed was once again full with feathers. Her wings protruded fully from her back, pure white and blinding in the sun as she gazed at them sadly. For the entire year she had been among the humans, she had refrained from flying. Any transformation would have gotten any shapeshifter's attention, especially that of the Guard that was hunting her. She didn't dare risk it, no matter how much her heart ached.

She sat there for a while, finally retracting her wings until the were nothing more than a scruff of feathers at the nape of her neck. Something she had always been careful to hide. Dirty blond hair fell into her teal eyes, and with a sigh, she finally stood up out of bed and opened the shades of her window. The morning sun was bright, cheerful, but it did not help to lift her mood much. Two worried tweets sounded from Tweety and Sylvester in the adjoining hall, and she walked in to greet them, opening the cage so they could each sit on a shoulder. They gently rubbed against her cheeks and she smiled, ruffling their feathers as she then went into the kitchen to get something to eat.

User ImageJared Herth | Prince of the Isle

In a quaint coffeehouse, a man with startling silvery hair and eyes sat, peacefully drinking his coffee. Earlier, when he arrived, most people turned and stared. After all, it wasn't common for a such a youngster to have hair that color. But with a bit of magic, they suddenly decided it was unsuspicious and paid him no mind. He was young anyway, just barely out of his teen years. What harm could he do?

Actually, not much, Jared thought as he took a table by the window. Though he had been trained in the arts of fencing, he couldn't imagine what it was like to actually fight someone. The only person he'd ever really 'fought' with was his tutor, a middle-aged Peregrine with a harsh-looking face and even harsher teacher methods. Needless to say, Jared quite liked him. He had a dry sense of humor that tended to pop out at the most unusual times. Though he wouldn't admit it, Jared missed him terribly, and everyone else in the Isle. He would go back eventually, once he'd warned the young guard who had presumably attempted an assassination on his mother.

Kele Celestin was only a young woman, innocent and devoted to her Empress. Jared couldn't believe that she would attempt a thing. He set his cup down and squinted at the sky, as if the answer was floating somewhere there. Where are you?

As she sat in her apartment, gazing out her window, she felt it. A presence. It was barely there, but she recognized it, and she almost stopped breathing. Another falcon? Here? It couldn't have been the Guard, because she knew of the aura they gave off. This one wasn't quite as... strong, but it was there, and the feathers at the nape of her neck stood up, alert. Her parakeets noticed the immediate change in her composure, and began to tweet nervously as she stood and placed her dishes in the sink. Maybe they had come to warn her? Probably not. If all on the Isle knew of her betrayal, none would feel pity for her. It was against their nature to show any sort of emotion, save for a detached coldness towards one another.

Gently placing Tweety and Sylvester back in their cage, she quickly disappeared into her room to get dressed. Kele donned a pair of jeans, shirt, and dress shirt, hopping back into the kitchen as she tied her shoes. She didn't know who or what was there in the city, but she had to know if she was in danger or not. And the only way to find out was to leave her apartment, and possibly risk a transformation if she had to. It was a last resort, though.

As soon as she left the apartment building, the feeling increased in strength, and she followed it, carefully avoiding any passersby that tried to stop her for a conversation. Using only the tiniest bit of her magic, she threw a barrier around herself so that she would seem invisible, or at least be ignored, by any humans. Kele let her inner eye lead her to where the presence was the strongest, and when she came upon the coffee house where she worked, she spotted them, or rather, him.

She didn't want to believe it. She couldn't. Why, of all the falcons, was the prince here? Kele quickly ducked behind a nearby building, watching, glaring at him through the window as he sat there, apparently looking towards the sky. He was here, looking for her. She knew it. But still, why?

Deciding that the situation was pretty much hopeless about now, Jared sighed and lifted his mug once more. He took a large gulp of the brown liquid. Strange, Jared thought. When he first arrived in the human world, he was thoroughly amazed by the strange taste this 'coffee' made. They never had the drink back at the Isle, nor did they really have any drinks that made this certain bitter taste. Jared found the drink strangely delightful. And to top it off, it gave him a sudden burst of energy soon after that lasted for a long while.

Then, quite suddenly, he felt it. The one thing he was hoping for, yet was totally not expecting. It was a presence, but not just any normal presence. A falcon presence. Jared sat straighter in his seat, getting more excited as the presence grew stronger. The presence was that of a Guard; a sort of cold, merciless aura that accompanied the average Falcon's. But unlike the others, this Guard's aura was less like the burly, emotionless ones back at the Isle. It was more feminine, more humane. Like one who hadn't been at the Isle in a long time.

Jared knew it for sure. It was Kele Celestin. She was here. It must be his lucky day today, to have her appear the moment he'd wished her to. Was it magic? Not likely. Unfortunately, he couldn't pinpoint the exact direction where she was located. She must've put a barrier that not only made her unnoticeable to humans, but slightly to Falcons as well. It wouldn't be easy to find her. The waiter of the cafe, a tall and slim man with a French mustache, passed by to see if Jared wanted anything else. He shook his head and paid him some cash; some bills that he'd palmed from a passerby's coat pocket. It wasn't an honorable skill to have, he had to admit, but while he knew nothing about the human world, and didn't have any of the human currency, he took some in the simplest way possible. Though, he thought it was strange that the nearest library would actually have an article about pickpocketing. Obviously, the author hadn't thought about certain quick-learners such as himself.

The Prince of the Isle stepped outside the coffeehouse, looking around for a shock of dirty-blond hair. Deciding that it was no use trying to look for her this way, Jared searched the depths of his educated mind, trying to think like she would. He knew that if he had felt her presence, she would've as well, even long before him. Now, if she really had committed the horrible crime everyone said she did, she would probably be staying back, staying unnoticed. Hidden. Jared started by walking down the sidewalk and peering into every small alley and building corner that met him. It was annoying having to search for someone the human way, but he couldn't possibly do it any other way. After all, he couldn't transform right then and there, and he wouldn't want to scare her if he did find her, both for his and her sake. Then again, she was a fully trained Guard. Who knows what painful skills she'd been taught? So, it was mostly for his own sake.

Kele watched as his aura changed from calm to anticipation, which meant he had sensed her presence as she approached and then neared where he had been sitting not five minutes ago. He had left, and was now looking for her, poking his head into each alley. She had moved a while ago for that reason, and was now perched atop the coffee house, invisible to the human eye. A light wind blew her dirty blond hair around her face, and she narrowed her eyes as they changed from indigo to teal, the air surrounding herself pulsing with thick magic. It was at this point she no longer cared whether or not the Guard came down on her at this very moment; she was curious, and intended to find out why Jared had come here.

Perhaps he had come to see if she really had attempted to assassinate the Heir, his mother. Kel couldn't help but wonder if he had been told the entire story, or just the dirty details that framed her and made it seem as though she had lost her mind. But she hadn't, and she couldn't wait to tell him the real reason why she'd attempted that assassination. Why she had risked everything, and hadn't even come close to leaving a mark on that ungrateful harpy. Why she had left, rather than be killed. Chosen to live among humans, hide herself among them. She didn't dare return to the isle, because she knew she would be executed on the spot.

Teasing him by being near, but not visible, Kele knew it was only fair to let him discover her as well as the nasty truth about his mother. With a loud cry, she shifted into her falcon form; a painful, but liberating sensation as her bones, her entire form shrunk, sprouted wings, and took off from the edge of the building as she dropped her barrier. Several passersby paused to gasp and point up at the sky, a few taking out their cameras to snap the rare photo of seeing a Peregrine falcon in the middle of the city. In broad daylight.

"Do not worry, your highness - I wouldn't be so foolish as to harm you when there's already a large target painted on the back of my head." She smirked, circling just above him before she landed on his shoulder, and scratched his cheek with her talons as she took off once more. "If you really want to know why I am here, then follow me... if you can." Kele had made a bold challenge to see if he really wanted to know why she was here, that he had been searching for her. With another shriek, she took off towards the park, knowing that he would follow either by foot or feather.

User ImageJared peeked once more into what seemed yet another empty alley, beginning to think that trying to find Kele this way was useless. It turned out, fortunately, that he didn't need to find her at all. She revealed herself to him first. There was a loud squawk - the shriek of Peregrine Falcon, Jared thought with growing excitement - followed by the gasps of passerbys. Almost as if by instinct, they whipped out their camera phones to take proof of the rare sight. A Peregrine falcon was actually flying around the city. And it was heading towards a young man with silver hair and eyes.

He knew it was Kele. There was no doubt about it. But he was confused. Why reveal herself to him? Didn't she think that she might be caught, assuming that the Guard had accompanied the young Prince on his trip to the human world? Didn't she think that he posed a threat to her? Apparently not, as she circled over Jared for a few moments, speaking to him with a taunting tone. Boldly, she dived and landing on his shoulder, then lifting a talon to scratch his cheek. It burned for a few seconds, but quickly vanished. Jared covered it with his hand so the humans wouldn't see an example of his fast-rate regeneration.

"If you really want to know why I am here, then follow me... if you can."

Jared's eyes widened, and he glanced at Kele as she shrieked once more and took off, swiftly flying away. On impulse, Jared immediately started running, trying to keep up with the fast flyer. However, Jared wasn't as accustomed to his human form as need be, and he found it difficult to sprint through the oncoming crowd. He frequently bumped into other people, and was met with a glare. Jared bit his lip. He couldn't keep up with her like this. At least, not when he was a human.

His mind whirred. Should he do it? If he turns into his bird form, it would be certain that the Guard would find the both of them. But then again, Jared wanted desperately to know why Kele had retreated. Concluding that Jared could simply order the Guard away, he ducked into a nearby alley and shifted. There was a strange grinding sound as his bones twisted and shifted, turning into his natural form. Instead of gray hair, gray feathers sprouted from his body, following a whole set of well-groomed gray wings. With his own falcon cry, Jared leaped and soared majestically through the sky. He spotted the Peregrine immediately and trailed after it. Vaguely, he heard the crowd gasp again, and wondered what they would be thinking. Imagine, two rare sights in one day! First, a Peregrine falcon, and then a Gray Falcon, which was rare in itself. Gray falcons were rarely seen, even in it's home continent, Australia.

Jared followed Kele to a nearby park, which Jared recognized from reading about it once in a book. It was about the size of the castle grounds. Not quite as beautiful, however. Jared dived and landed in some closely packed trees. They would give him enough cover to transform here. Once he'd shifted back into his human form, Jared swung down from the branches and looked around. There wasn't much to see; it was just trunk after trunk. He had no idea where Kele had landed, but he found it no point to try and find her. She had led him here, after all. It was her who would find him first. Jared thought to give her a little hint to where he was, and called out, "Well, I have followed you here, Kele Celestin of the Empress' Royal Guard. I am not armed. What have you to tell me?" He knew that the part about him not being armed was a lie, but there was no need to tell Kele the truth. Jared didn't want himself facing the end of Kele's sharp blade, if she had one. Nor would he want to have her facing his if she attempts to attack him.

So he had decided to follow her after all. Kele had to admit he was brave for changing into his falcon form in the middle of a crowd, despite the risks the both of them were taking. But he needed to know the truth, especially the fact that he had just sealed his own fate alongside hers. The both of them were now fugitives, and she felt a brief pang of guilt before she circled above a grove of trees in the park and landed amongst them to shift back into her human form. She winced, feeling her bones crack in protest. It had been too long since her last transformation, and she had the feeling that she was going to feel it within the next few days.

As Kele heard him call out to her, she smirked, walking out from amongst the trees casually. "You're braver than I thought, princeling," she murmured, her tone teasing. She had called him that only once or twice before, back on the Isle, and she knew it irked him. "Coming all the way here to warn me of the Guard, when I already know that they are after me. But, did your mother tell you why?" Turning her gaze upward for a brief moment, she simply shrugged her shoulders while she kept a short distance from him.

"It is true that I attempted to assassinate your mother, but she was... expecting me. You see, she..." Kele paused. It was harder to tell her story than she thought it would be. The pain, the realization of failure... it made her chest ache. "She ordered me to kill my family, with no reason as to why." Except to see her crack under the pressure, to get Kele to give into her emotions despite all of her training. All her parents had taught her about being a falcon. They were no threat to the Empress or her Heir, and the both of them knew. But she wanted to see Kele suffer. Maybe she was jealous? Kele didn't know, didn't care any longer.

"Your coming here... you have sealed your fate as well. I know you didn't tell your mother, because she wouldn't have allowed it. And she is a rather unforgiving creature." Kele now stood no more than a few inches from Jared, staring into his eyes as she tried to keep her anger from bubbling to the surface. "Of course, you'll probably get off with no more than a slap to the wrist. But as for myself..." She shook her head, walking over to a nearby tree as she sunk to the ground. "Death only awaits me."

"You know I speak the truth, though. You do not have to search for it by using your magic - just think on what I have said."
