"Why ... Am I here?" Verdrai posed to himself; it had been an eternity since he had seen the rainbow child, eternity since he'd made the pact to not leave Verdrai alone, and he had, and Verdrai had no hard feelings - he had been expecting it, really, so it was no surprise. It didn't ease the pain, though, since he had considered both of the younglings his first friends in awhile; he just did not tell nor hint at it to anyone.
But, apparently, the two could meet up again, if Verdrai had any luck at all (and he knew he had none, not really, but he hoped the slightest bit, a strange sensation for the usually painfully pessimistic fox), and he decided it was worth it. He actually wanted more than anything to meet up with Tamaki again, knowing this was possibly his only friend left in the world, a fact that was his own choosing. He considered the rainbow kid-- well, he supposed, adult at this point, and he sighed, depressed-- important enough to risk face for, which really said something, when one considered that Verdrai had not opened his heart to anyone since he had been a kit, since K-- no. He would not think that name! He shook his head severely, snarling at himself, feeling anger bubble hot and furious up through his chest, and he clawed at the ground in a display of the futility of his own emotions, drowned in all the anger.
"Get here, kid..." He prayed softly, the last sane bit, "Get here, please... Tama.." He shook his head, his ears flying every which way with the force of it. It was no longer hope, as it had been moments before. It was a prayer, a plea, that Tamaki would be able to save him from himself yet again.

'I'll be your friend then!' Tamaki could still remember those words, still remember how he spoke them with confidence only a kit could have. It had not occurred to him at that point of his life that he may have to break that promise. That he may be forced to leave the male he had sworn to never abandon like so many had done to him. Yet, when he had grown he had forgotten the way to Verdrai. His tiny paws had become larger, and no longer able to bring him to the male he had sworn to. His memory became hazy, and he forgot the path he had once taken.
Until now. He could come back, and this time never leave. Never leave the male again. He had sworn he would be this males friend forever, and he was not going to break this promise! He almost had, and yet he hadn't meant to. He wanted to make the male happy.
"Ver, I'm here." He called out once he reached the familiar plain, hoping he had come in time, hoping he had caught the male before he had given up.
Just hoping.

"Tamaki?" Verdrai started, the anger settling down and the saner bits of him returning to the surface; he stared at him, unable to do anything but that. To call what he felt happiness would be an understatement; it was so, so much more. But, undeniably, there was also sorrow at the fact that it had been so long, that only the "Ver," the voice, the pattern that he could vaguely remember -- maybe or was it more rainbow, were his colours so pastel or were they brighter, he couldn't remember -- told him who it was ... He forced the rest of his anger down, the rest of his frustration, because Tamaki would not see that part of him, not so long as he could help it - and help it he could. His pride might have been able to be abused if his friend had not shown, but he was not willing to let it be hit and smacked at when he had a choice; besides, it was entirely possible that Tamaki had forgotten Verdrai's problems in their separation, and he did not want to frighten him away. There would be, he was sure, plenty of time for that at a later date.
Of course it was Tamaki and he kept his composure just enough to walk over to him, to not run and throw himself into the rainbow patterned male with a force borne of happiness he hadn't felt in so long that it hurt to be a victim to it. "I am... so happy you showed." He shook his head. "I hoped... you would." He sighed then, then sat down.
There was a pause in which he went over protocol for an average conversation between two foxes. He settled on a faint, soft, "And how are you? You're... so much bigger... than I remember." Sadness could not help but tinge that last sentence -- kits sometimes stayed with him; adults left, without fail.

Tamaki turned when he heard his name, blinking up at the male. Oh. That was how he looked like! Now that he saw Verdrai, he suddenly remembered every little detail. Every little scar. Every little flaw and every little beautiful perk. He smiled at the male, however, his smile faltered when he realized that he had been the one to leave Verdrai. It was an honest accident, but, he knew Verdrai was hurt because of it.
He lowered his head, bumping his forehead with the pastel rainbow males forehead. "Of course I would." He mused, tail wagging side to side. "I've been alright, I guess.... I was lost for a bit so I saw a lot of new foxes." He smiled at Verdrai nervously, licking his cheek tentatively.

Verdrai returned the bump lightly as he could, genuinely afraid of hurting him. His eyes fixated on the flicking tail with a light, almost not-all-there gaze. "Ah... New foxes."
He wished he could return that statement but Verdrai had gone into the same solitude he always had; he'd seen no one until today, until Tamaki came back. It was a pathetic way of life but it was the way of life he'd always known, from the time he and K-- that woman split ways to the time Tamaki found him ... to now. It was familiar - it was comfortable. He blinked in surprise when his cheek was licked and returned it, equally as unsure, his mouth curling upwards slightly.
"I ... Missed you." It was shy, as though he were but a child greeting his family home. He paused, though, and then asked the question he wanted to avoid more than anything. "Will you ... be staying? This time..."
He hoped it would be a yes; he hoped in some alternate dimension that Tamaki would stay and not say he'd found a mate but he probably had and that was alright - it wasn't as though Verdrai thought he was anywhere near suitable mate material.

Tamaki blinked at Verdrai when he gently head-butted him back, tail wagging. However the male seemed to be withered, ears lowering when he eyed Verdrai long enough. Now that he looked hard enough, he looked tired. Depressed even. The bubbly male blinked at Verdrai, suddenly realizing what he had done. He had left Verdrai. He had left this male alone, while he found new people. He had left him all alone.
When Verdrai spoke Tamaki snuggled up to the male suddenly, nuzzling his friend. "I'll stay." He mewled, licking his cheek. "You were my best friend, of course I'll stay! I was lost, that's why I was gone for so long." He whimpered, almost wishing he could beg for forgiveness. Just this once he felt like a monster, like a bad person.
