User ImageThe water was chilly down near the bottom of their cave, unusually chilly for this time of the year. Kaia took it to mean the frozen waters were melting and being pushed down further. The need to feel the warm sun on her face overwhelmed the mare.

A flick of her tail brought the mare out of the cave entrance and headed past the seaweed that grew near by. Her companion, Aysu, joined her on the way up. A feeling of unease ran through the seal, but he couldn't place the reason. A glitter above showing where the sun was hitting the most, called their attention. Kaia glanced at Aysu. Smiling, "Lets race! Last one out is a snappy crab."

The race started with the seal in the lead. The long haired mare allowed her friend a short lead before using her strong tail to catch up. The seal was between her hoofs before they knew it, she held him close as they surged forward and out of the water. A push from her body, Aysu dove back in with a little splash. Kaia followed a little behind.

The storm raged. Sahirah did not usually go this far out to sea and this time it had not been intentional. He had been a little deeper than he was used to, yes, but it was the vicious current that had dragged him out further. Now he was in the midst of choppy gray water and couldn't even see the seafloor. He swam to the surface and gulped a quick breath of air before a wave splashed down on him and spun him upside down. He righted himself and strained to keep himself from going tumbling again. This wasn't good.

He opened his eyes wide underwater and looked around for something, anything that could help. Even a piece of driftwood that he could anchor himself to would be appreciated. For the first time in his life he wished he had been born with fins instead of his bare grasping tail. It made him a weak swimmer, and if he was unlucky then he could easily drown.

The sun didn't last very long for the mare and seal. A storm came upon the area, taking them by surprise, but both being strong swimmers made it to the calmer waters under the surface. The waters were churning above them and Aysu swam back towards the surface. He couldn't go without finding what was bothering him so.

Kaia acknowledged the others senses when it came to a storm. If any of the little ones were out they could be taking a huge risk. What if they were just babies?! A strong flick of her tail, the mer forced her way towards the rougher area of the storm.

Sahirah beat the fins on the sides of his tail and even swiped through the water with his legs and hooves in attempt to get more power against the rushing waves. He was managing to stay controlled for now but knew he couldn't keep up the pace indefinitely. He was already growing tired and didn't want to think about what would happen when his energy ran out.

"Hello?" he called out underwater. His voice would carry farther down there than up above in the air. "Is anyone out there?" He didn't have any real hope of response but figured it was better than nothing.

He surfaced for another gulp of air and quickly went under again. While squinting through the water he thought he caught a glimmer of something bright against the gloom. What was it? A school of fish? An illusion? He could barely swim in place let alone go chasing down whatever it was, so he stayed where he was and watched.

Kaia was swimming down towards the bottom when she heard a voice. Aysu ignored her calls as he took off above her. The voice had sounded scared and the seal wanted to make sure whoever it belonged to was safe.

The mer was not very far behind her friend. "Hello!" Her voice raised to be heard. She thought she seen a small one above and was concerned. A small one wouldn't have the strength to ride out this storm. It still felt a little rough at her current level. Another push of her tail brought Kaia up to the seathi.

Hope bloomed in Sahirah as the mer swam over. He hadn't realized quite the extent of his fear until relief swept over him. Someone was there. He wouldn't drown. She wouldn't have come over if she was going to leave him there to fend for himself. He had never had much contact with mers but had always heard them to be a gentle breed. They weren't like the carnivorous kelpis. He didn't know if he'd be brave enough to accept help from one of them even in his dire situation.

He kept beating his fins as she came up level with him. "Can you help me?" he asked in as polite a voice he could muster with all his strain. "I seem to have gotten swept too far away from the coast and am having a hard time swimming in this weather." Belatedly he wondered if he should have put more urgency into his request. Matters of life and death might merit something more than his usual dignified standard.

The storm still raged above and even her fins were feeling the strain of the current pushing against them. She looked at the seathi and brought her body under him, in case he dropped back down to far again. "We can help you." Kaia knew now was not a good time to joke around, maybe when they got closer to the coast.

"Do you think you can hold on to my mane?" She would need her tail to get both of them out of the worst spot and she didn't want to lose the seathi by accident. If he couldn't, the mer was certain she could carry him between her hoofs, with Aysu below him to keep everyone together.

As tired as he was he knew that he would be able to hold on. That was what his tail was made for, after all. He could grip to something indefinitely, i twas only the long time spent swimming that wore him out. She had a seal with her but it looked docile enough. He avoided seals on the principle of them being predators but wasn't about to slight his saviors by appearing nervous.

"Yes, I can. And thank you." He swam up to the mer and twined his tail deeply into her mane. Her hair was so long and thick that there was plenty to hold onto. Really, even if he let go of her he was likely to get carried along tangled up in it anyways! "I can find my way back home wherever you drop me off," he said once he was secure. "Getting out of this storm is more important."

As the seathi twined his tail, she looked up at the storm and knew it would be a race. "We couldn't let anything happen to others during a storm if we can." Asyu swam up next to the mer and looked at the male in her hair. Seeing that everyone was ready, he took the lead.

Kaia followed behind. She wanted to move fast, but didn't want to scare Sahirah. "My name is Kaia. Do you mind if I swim a bit faster? I want to get to the edge of the storm sooner so you can make it home safely."

Sahirah held on as the mer began to swim and was glad that his tail wasn't too tired from swimming. If he couldn't hold on then the only option would be for the mare to grab him by the mane in her teeth, an undignified option that he didn't want to consider. So far so good, even though the water still buffeted him to and fro.

He fluttered his fins slightly nervously at the question. He could hold on at this speed but wasn't certain how he'd fare going faster. Faster would be safer though, out of the storm and to safety much sooner than otherwise. "Go ahead," he said after that thought. "If I fall off, we can reconsider." He twined his tail even more strongly into her mane and held on tight.

Kaia listened to his reply and watched his body language with a thoughtful eye. The seathi didn't seem that tired, but the water does funny things when you get a small chance to relax. "I will work up to the speed, if it feels too fast for you, yell."

That should work for them. Yes, she wanted to get him out of the storm. It was unfair that he has to rely on someone kind to help, but that was the way it went. Besides, he could become a friend in the future.

Aysu swam ahead of her, pointing out when another swell was about to crash down. It was going to be a slightly long swim back as she pushed herself a little faster. Between the two of them, though, they were sure to get the male back safe.

Sahirah clung on to the mare as if his life depended on it... which it very well might. He was unused to traveling so quickly and his eyes squinted half shut to protect them from the debris kicked up into the water during the storm. He would never venture out so far or so deep, he vowed to himself. Maybe he would even travel into a river and live in those calm shallows from now on. Even though he had lived in the ocean all of his life he had never realized how terrifying it could be until now.

His grip on the mare's mane was tight for now but the strain quivered through his muscles. He could feel the beginnings of soreness creeping into him and worried at his growing fatigue. He couldn't afford to be anything but strong and steady right now. "Please, hurry," he panted.
