After wrapping up the 11:00 News at DCNN and dropping Kam off at his place, Penny had made her way back to her apartment only to find her fridge beerless. It was a frustration for her. The way she liked to unwind after a long night was with a beer and a cigarette. With a groan of frustration, Penny transformed quickly into Cimmerian and decided to use the speed boost to make the trip a little less time-consuming.

She was already on her way back to her apartment. There was a six pack of beer under her arm and a cigarette dangling from her lips. At 5'0" flat, the 27-year-old crimefighter didn't look like any kind of super hero. A homeless man glanced up at her as she jogged by, a blur of too-quick motion for his bleary eyes to focus on.

There was a path through the tiny park the city had installed to try to green up her neighborhood. It was badly lit and a haven for crime, but with her Page self in full swing, Cimmerian didn't think twice before veering a hard left and jogging into the darkness. She had beer to drink and didn't want to waste a moment of time.

Captain Painite was ready to enjoy her evening. In her very specific way, of course. She had a plan, as she always did, and that involved trapping helpless civilians for her nefarious, energy draining needs. She wasn't set on a location yet, however, and was still thinking up a good trap as she hopped along the rooftops, scanning for a place that had people in it, but not too many. Increasingly, her interest has been leaning toward catching more than one victim at a time.

She always liked challenges.

Her attention was drawn when something tingled in the back of her mind. A sensation, an energy signature of some kind, coming her way. It didn't feel like anything she had noticed before. Not a senshi, and certainly not one of her own. She had only recently met a corrupt cat, and she wondered if she was about to meet another strange being that lived alongside them, but without her knowledge.

Or, hopefully, something she could stab with the Spirit of Mr. Saddles.

Running after it, realizing it had already gone by her as she was contemplating the feel of it, she leaped from one roof to another and looked down the alley to spot the moving figure. Definitely not a nega. Or a cat. Not a senshi. Her check list depleted, she went with the only logical choice in figuring out what it was. Stopping it. Summoning her weapon, she gripped the javelin and ran along to catch up once again, grinning as the target moved into a dark area. It was like she was begging to be attacked, and how could Painite refuse?

Once she was close enough she dropped almost gracefully to the ground a short distance behind the Page and threw the javelin like a track star. At least in her mind. She had been working on her aim, but the whole 'accounting for movement and the wind' thing was still a bit new to her. Her goal was to stop the Page, either by over shooting and catching her attention or at the very least tripping her up.

The javelin landed directly in front of Cimmerian. She let out a gasp of surprise and slammed to a stop. Despite dedicated years of kickboxing, Meri was still not agile enough to predict the future. She didn't see this coming, her toe caught on the shaft of the spear, and she went sprawling forward. The beer bottles shattered upon impact pressing bits of broken glass into the exposed flesh of her stomach.

Rolling out of the fall, Meri popped up quickly, which was impressive enough. "What the ******** ********," she swore. A particularly large shard of glass was caught just above her belly button. She grimaced in preparation and then pulled it free, tossing it to the ground. A thin trail of blood dripped from the cut down to the line of lace at her waist.

Youmas didn't throw spears, and the only other Knight she knew of was Gehenna. He fought with gloves. Reaching out, Meri tugged the spear from the ground and stared at it, squinting in the darkness to try and see who had thrown it. Her elbows were grass-burned, her stomach had a few pieces of glass still buried in it, and her beer had been destroyed. "You're paying for that s**t, I hope you realize," she said.

The inexperienced Page had no idea that there might be something to fear. She had always been headstrong in this way, even as a civilian.

Painite grinned. Good flying, Spirit of Mr. Saddles. She hopped to catch up, light on her feet and still grinning ear to ear as she bowed her head at the strange looking non-senshi. Noticing she had managed to do some damage ala conveniently placed beer bottle, she felt a swell of pride. She'd take credit for that, like she had planned it, even though she hadn't even seen the Page was carrying anything.

"You should really watch where you're going," she said conversationally, not bothering to feign innocence as she watched the Page pick up her weapon. It made her bristle a bit: that was her weapon, and she treasured it. No possible-enemy had any right to be touching it. She banished it and recalled it to her hand, frowning.

"Paying for what? Your booze? Not my fault you're clumsy, is it?" She asked, in her accented English tone, almost sing song, "and anyway." She waggled the tip of the javelin at the Page, squinting thoughtfully. "You're not one of us, and you're not one of those bloody senshi. Though you are bloody." Another grin, this time at her own expense because she had been clever there, "so what are you? Beyond a drunk, I mean. You stink of booze. You could probably call this an intervention."

Gripping the javelin, she poised herself in a more attack oriented way, watching the stranger keenly. She took the demand to pay for the beer as a threat to fight, not as a literal owed tab.

Whatever the girl was, she could still be drained of her energy. And now that Painite was involved and having fun, that was exactly what she wanted to do.

Cimmerian jumped as the javelin disappeared from her hand and reappeared in the stranger's. That was... a new trick. Her own weapon was strapped across her back. She clutched at the taut bow string. Something prickled in the air, but Meri was too inexperienced to realize what it was. She had seen footage of the magical schoolgirls and the militant fighters in plenty of news reels, but she had never been able to tell much of a difference. Now that she was face-to-face with this girl, Meri honestly had no idea what she was. There was a crackling of dark energy. She could feel the difference between this girl's vibes and her own, but she had absolutely no idea what that meant.

Instantly, she regretted going out with Gehenna. The first time she did it, a youma attacked her, and Kurma happened to come along to save her. The second time she did it to make it to work on time, another youma came for her. This was only her third time transforming into Cimmerian without Gehenna at her side, and she was already encountering someone that was making her stomach clench tightly.

Esabel had told Penny what it meant to be a Knight. She had neglected to inform her about the Negaverse.

Cimmerian frowned. "I stink of booze because you tripped me and smashed a six-pack on my stomach, you mouthy t**t," she said, pointing at the bits of glass that still clung to her. There was another big piece. She pinched it out with another swear. Meri had a mouth on her, and that mouth was full of dirt.

"I'm not a senshi, I'm a ******** Page, and you are a goddamn asshat. These are the things we know." A hole. Meri was digging it. Even as her head whirled with alarm bells, she could only find herself fixating on the annoyance of the issue at hand. If this girl wanted to attack her, she would have, right?

Painite was now fairly certain that it was definitely okay to fight with the strange non-senshi. She was not corrupted in anyway, and her energy felt a little too pure for Painite to like it. Beyond wanting it for her collection to take back to the Negaverse, of course. She watched the Page carefully, though her body language was almost casual, javelin gripped in front of her in preparation for a fight, yet still giving off a languid feel.

"I did no such thing," Painite shook her head, noticing now that she stood an inch, almost two if she rounded up, higher than her new opponent. Awesome. She had always longed to tower over someone, and an inch and a handful was more than enough to satisfied that impossible goal for now.

She laughed.

"A Page? Your book's going to be severely shortened, I'm afraid. I've never been a hat to anyone's a**, but what you think you know will hardly matter in about three minutes. I am honored to introduce you to the Negaverse. And..." she couldn't think of any witty phrasing, and tried not to look perplexed, "remove you... from the... end your life."

Not the strongest end, there, but she couldn't be perfect all the time. She charged, holding the javelin at the grip wrapped around its center, her hands close together. She used the weapon as a bo staff now, swinging both ends one at a time, as quickly as she could, once she was close enough to her target. One blow high, one blow low, and a third hopefully down and across at the page, her back or shoulder, while she reeled from the first two. Painite saw the moves in her head before she attacked, remembering her training with Hiro with her still fairly new weapon.

Page? Book? Oh, cute. This one had some banter. As someone who spent her days pulling news stories, overseeing edits, and finally helping stream line them to make it on air, Cimmerian had the fight to urge to dispense a series of pointers to the other girl. Then a word left her mouth that had Meri's vision blurring: Negaverse.

Of course she was a Nega! How could Meri have been so stupid?

Before she could even pull her bow from her shoulder, the Page of Pluto was slammed with three blows in quick succession. She managed to mildly deflect the final one to her back with a quick turn, but that was thanks to years of kickboxing, not because of any actual fighting experience.

Toppling forward, Meri wiggled her bow over her shoulder and pulled free an arrow, hopping to her feet as quickly as she could. She was already bleeding from the glass, and now her shoulder and thigh stung from the blows. "******** you!" she shouted. It did absolutely nothing to help her in battle, but it sure did make her feel better.

She tried to run backward and notch a blunt arrow in her bow, but Painite was too close. The string of her bow hadn't even been stretched when she let the arrow drop to the ground. With no options, Cimmerian hefted her bow above her head and swung it forward at Painite, aiming for the girl's neck.

Painite, on the other side of the coin, had never taken any fighting classes outside of stage fighting for her theatre experience. When she had come in to the negaverse she had been anything but a fighter, but quickly learned that knowing how to fight was certainly useful. She couldn't afford not to teach herself and train, and even after her promotion she had to continue with new training exercises to keep herself from getting hurt or killed in battle because she was unfamiliar with her javelin. She looked for fights, or civilian targets who looked like they might take a few hits, to train against.

Practice.

Even now, she was focused on that training with Hiro, as well as her recent senshi fights. She had all her notes shuffled away in her head, and she called on them as she fought now, seeking only to improve, experiment and develop the absolute best fighting style for herself, that no senshi or, in this new case, Page could come close to. She might have had a long way to go on that impossible goal, but the thought didn't occur to her, and she focused only on being awesome and intimidating.

"You have such a dirty mouth!" Painite said, clicking her tongue behind her teeth disapprovingly. She grinned and charged after the Page. A bow? Sassolite used a bow, the Captain that had first trained her and showed her how the Negaverse worked. She remembered that close range was better there, prevented the bow from being used, and that seemed to be the case now. Rolling with that, Painite jabbed the javelin forward when she thought she had a moment after the arrow was dropped. She didn't realize the Page would use the actual bow as a blunt force weapon.

Stumbling when she was struck, she swung the pointed end of her javelin wildly, cursing in return, her apparent campaign against swearing vanishing.

Cimmerian had trained with a hanging bag. She had occasionally gotten in the ring when challenged. There had been some scuffles in high school, a drunken bar fight twice in college when her mouth got ahead of her. None of these things properly prepared her to face a Negaverse Captain. The only thing that was keeping her alive was agility, and a good portion of that was due to the suped up nature of her Knighthood -- even then, Painite was stronger by much too much.

Her strike with the blow hit, but the resulting parry from Painite was barely dodged. Meri came away with a shallow cut on her arm. Her stomach, her arm -- this girl was really trying to ******** her up? It was perhaps then that Cimmerian realized how serious this was. "Get AWAY from me!" she barked, throwing a rapid series of punches and jabs. Her fist packed more power than a senshi, but she was still fighting a losing battle against a Captain.

The Captain was having quiet a lot of fun. She loved finding senshi, or in this case a Page, that she could really fight against. Some of them had magic that was more for defense than fighting, which meant they were scaredy cats and they fled before they would actually fight.

And of course, there were some that were way too strong or skilled in physical fights that Painite didn't like, either.

She preferred to find targets somewhere in between. A safe bet, as it were. Fights that would give her some fun and maybe even a run for her money, but fights she could win. And then brag about later, of course. This one she hadn't been anticipating, picking the target on a whim if only because she hadn't known what the girl was, but it looked to be turning out like a good choice.

Then she was smacked in the jaw by one of the Page's surprisingly fast punches and she stumbled backwards, grabbing her jaw in surprise. These guys could certain hit. She'd have to remember that the next time she ran into one of these people.

"Alright, I'm tiring of this game! Stop whining and take it like a sensh... er... book!"

She pulled her staff back and changed her grip, switching from close range to further back. She moved to swing the javelin now, in the hopes of throwing the Page off balance and then, if she had a chance, running her through. Maybe. Death scenes were not something Painite often planned out in her mind: she never knew what she might do if her plans ever worked to their fullest. A full win, with no good guy getting away or something distracting her.

She didn't admit it, but it wasn't really something she wanted to think about.

Without Gehenna at her side, Cimmerian felt incredibly vulnerable. They might not be the most experienced crimefighters in the world, but together, they had managed to dust a few youma without major complications. She did not fancy herself someone who really needed other people in order to be a success. In that moment, facing an opponent she knew was better than her, Meri could only think of Ghen and hope that he might fall out of the sky to help her beat this. Becoming a Page had been startling, but there had been an excitement in her awakening too, a power-high. Now, Cimmerian was experiencing her very first extreme low.

“You AREN’T clever!” she snapped. There were so many insults that Meri wanted to hurl at Painite, words to tear her down. The girl was a master at words – but not one harsh snap or stinging quip would help her beat the Negaverse Captain. No sneer would make the spear move slower. No crude comment about her intelligence would turn the tides. Cimmerian was on the run, and she saw no escape in sight.

It was terrifying, even for a girl who was normally so adaptable and determined.

The swipe of the javelin set her off-balance, digging a nasty gash across her bare stomach as she swerved to avoid a killing blow. Tears stung her eyes. She swore loudly, tumbling backward. Her fall was broken by a bright orange cone. Flat on her stomach, Cimmerian could feel the world buzzing in and out of focus. If this fight went on for a moment longer, she knew the probability of her surviving would be slim. One hand reached blindly forward to grip for her bow. Instead, she felt the metal rim of an open manhole.

There was no time for second guessing. With a cry of pain, the Page of Pluto forcibly threw herself down into the pitch black hole. She felt ten feet straight down. Her shoulder slammed against the metal side and dislocated. Another cry of pain echoed out. Sludge and grime three feet deep provided enough cushion for her to fall without breaking her neck. Her wrist felt sprained. The filthy water burned in her cuts like acid.

Sobbing and barely coherent, Cimmerian gritted her teeth and forced herself to stand. She could barely see six inches in front of her, but still, she ran. She ran blindly, limping through the tunnel, and did not stop until she was certain no one would find her.

Painite might have been offended by the very idea of her not being clever if she took any stock in what the struggling Page had to say. But she didn't. Her enemies were always insulting and would throw any lie her way in their efforts to diminish her pride or make her doubt herself.

Clearly that was the goal here.

But Painite knew, just knew, she was much more than clever.

And what was even better was she was about to win this fight, hands down. Senshi had annoying habits of rallying from defeat, or multiplying inconveniently to make sure they didn't get killed or energy drained. It was very frustrating, though she still counted every time a senshi ran away or was helped toward victory by some fluke or outside source as a win for herself. But this? This was going to be a complete victory.

Maybe there was something to hunting Pages. Maybe they were the rivals she was looking for, the ones she knew she could triumph over but would still provide her with all the fun and challenge she could hope for. She would have to look into it more. Focus on them for a while: see if she might find another one.

It was thrilling to think about, and she was grinning ear to ear.

As caught up in the fight as she was, she did not notice she had nearly killed the Page. No trap or idea in the back of her head to spare her life and just take her energy. No doubt or confusion as she often faced when using civilians in her plots, or fighting senshi. She was so confident, having so much fun, she simply didn't think about it. Like killing someone was such an easy thing to do. She didn't have the time or the presence of mind to really think about that, however.

She let out a surprised, angry, cry when her target vanished from her sight. She followed immediately, realizing what had happened but a fraction too late.

Sticking her head down the manhole, she could see nothing in the darkness, though she felt the Pages' energy. There was no way she was going to willingly jump down into that muck, surely.

"Better get used to this feeling! Running for your life!" She yelled into the tunnel, her voice echoing triumphantly around the walls, tinged with a sarcastic and vicious edge, "I will find you again, little book! Your story ends with me!"
