Something striking the mare's hoof drew her attention and made her look down, pausing mid-stride. Ashen eyes opened in surprise, and then softened with sadness as she bowed her head slightly.
Below her lay a small bird, it's wing twisted awkwardly to one side, dried blood covering up a gash on the side of it's neck. It's white plumage was ruffled up, some feathers broken and others twisted.
The image was a sad one. "Poor thing..." Sakura mumbled, though she did not allow it to trouble her that much. After all, life was a cycle, and life would go on.

 She'd been walking along, on her way to her secret get away to spend some time alone, without a soul to hear her sing well that wasn't her only reason for heading there.. she was in hopes that a certain individual might show up and talk to her once more. Her trip, however was cut short. In her path stood a pink mare looking down at something. Slowly, she walked up to see what was the object of interest. "Awwe.. poor little birdy... how.." Her soft sweet voice choked and cracked as she tried to finish her sentence. Sure she'd been attacked once and hurt.. but this... was just... different. new.. it was a shocking sight, one that brought tears to her eyes.

Hearing someone else approach, Sakura raised her head and whinnied a brief greeting. "Hello! I'm-" She cut off, seeing the other mare's distraught face as she gazed down at the bird. Sakura's heart went out to the innocent looking mare, especially as her voice crackled off towards the end.
"It's okay, sometimes things happen." She whispered quietly, gently nuzzling Briallan's neck in a comforting gesture. Her eyes shone with genuine concern, "I'm not sure what happened, I stumbled across it. I don't think it felt much pain at least."
She pondered trying to heal the small creature, but no one could bring someone back from death. Not to mention that her powers were not strong enough to heal such a deep wound to the neck, not properly.

Her eyes looked up at the mare as she thought of just what to say. "How.... Who?" Was all she could manage. Her heart was wrenching at the sight, her stomach was twisting, knotting up adding to her sick feeling. the scent of blood hit her nose and caused her to head to a bush and wretch, heaving up the contents of her stomach at the debacle.

Though Sakura was slightly taken aback by the mare's exaggerated reaction, her mothering instinct kicked in quickly to counter it. "I think it may have been a hawk, hunt-" She was cut off mid-sentence as the mare turned her head to the bushes and began to heave violently, throwing up all her stomach contents.
Sakura's heart went out to her. Such innocence was rare, especially in full-grown adults. Quickly pressing her flank against the mare's side in a comforting gesture, Sakura nuzzled her neck gently. "Are you okay? I can heal away some of the nausea. My name's Sakura." Her voice was soft and calming, meant to soothe the mare.

She gave a small sigh, her mouth now sour from the aftertaste of bile. "Yeah.. I'll be fine.. I just need to find some cool water..." She offered a small smile though her heart went out to the little creature who's life had come to such an end. "Is there something we can do for the poor thing?"

"Ah, there's a pool of water not 20 rabbit hops away in that direction." She gestured with her muzzle towards the right, where a small trail weaved off into the forest, impossible to trace as it curved around a large tree trunk. "We should get you a drink, come on."
But her eyes strayed to the bird. It did not seem right to leave it there. Her mind ticked quickly, "We could bury it. Give it a burial and see it off happily. That way its body will be returned to the earth, and it will nourish the trees here so they can grow bigger and support more life." She paused, debating. The mare looked so sad, and Sakura knew that she had to set her mind at rest. But the stranger was also shaken up, and needed some water to steady her nerves.
"Tinsel, can you guard the body and make sure nothing happens to it whilst we go and take a quick drink?" She was talking to her hummingbird familiar, who twittered an answer and flew down to stand beside the body. "Come on, we'll bury the bird after."

She watched the little hummingbird for a moment before giving a small nod. "A burial would be nice.." She gave a small sigh as she tried to collect her thoughts better. "Maybe you're right.. we should get a drink and then come back.. will he be fine to leave with the poor birdy?" She was concerned that maybe this other mare's familiar might end up becoming a hawk's meal or something. "I'm Briallan by the way."

"Briallan?" She echoed happily. The name sounded nice, down to earth. But earth was ruled by the cruel mistress that went by the name of Nature, and clearly this mare had not been exposed to her atrocities yet. "I'm Sakura, in case you didn't hear." The mare probably had heard, but Sakura wanted to double check because she'd seemed so distraught.
"Tinsel's tough, she'll be fine. She flies so fast, nothing can catch her. Besides, she'll hide away and just watch over. She's in no danger." Her voice was reassuringly calm.
"Come on, this way." Worry filled her eyes as she tried to guide the mare towards the pool. Perhaps she should have healed her a little? But then again, there was nothing physically wrong. The reaction had been emotional. Hopefully some water would help steady Briallan's nerves.

She shook her head sorrowfully as she moved towards the pool. "It's a pleasure meeting you... I know life's.. some times cruel.. but.. I think this just drove it home more for me." She gave another shake of her head, her mane shifting enough to reveal a glimpse of marred and mangled scar tissue on her shoulder. Why hadn't she been more... numb to such things after the kalona attack?? She gave a small sigh and lowered her head to the water once they arrived to it. Taking a small breath, she took a drink and allowed the coolness of the water to wash over her and cool her nerves.

"Better?" Sakura asked, her mothering instincts taking over. She had learned to accept that life would sometimes be taken from a young age. After all, she had lost her mother as an almost newborn foal, and her father had then deteriorated in front of her eyes. The inward smile was tinged with sadness at the memories. But they had taught her a life lesson, and that was to embrace life and live it to the fullest. She couldn't hold onto the bad memories.
"Life is a cycle, eventually everything returns to the ground. But at least the birds body is not wasted, it will fuel new life by helping the plants to grow. So it's not so bad. It's sad the life is gone, and we should respect it, but it lets others live in the future." Her words were meant to be comforting, though perhaps they were edged too close to the truth for that.
Sakura nuzzled Briallan's flank gently. "Tell me when you're ready." Her words were soft and patient. She would wait as long as it took for the mare to regain herself.

She gave a small sigh. "I know life's a cycle.. it's just... I never saw a dead critter before.." She shook her head lightly and looked back at the direction of the dead bird. "I'm fine now.. we should return it's body to the earth..." With that she turned and headed toward where they had left the dead bird.

"I understand." She mumbled kindly, her leonine tail curling up to gently touch Briallan's shoulder in a comforting gesture.
"Let's go then." Grey eyes wavered softly as she gazed at the innocent mare; eyes that had the power to grow as cold as steel or as warm as freshly fallen ash.
Following the mare, Sakura stepped carefully through the undergrowth, using her wings to stabilize her movement. The problem with living in the forest was that there were always lots of tree roots to trip you up, and the alicorn was not as graceful as the cerynei.

Briallan offered a small smile before finally stopping where they'd left the little body behind at. She waited for the other mare to catch up hearing her careful steps through the brush.

Briallan reached the bird's body first, with Sakura following close behind. Stumbling slightly, the mare managed to stop her fall by throwing all her weight onto her front foot. The bone-jarring impact made her wince as pain lanced up her ankle. With a flap of her wings, she lifted her foot off the ground, momentarily allowing herself to not put any weight on it.
Then she landed again, casting her eyes back. A tree root was her opponent, the thing that had made her fall. Shaking her hoof, she was relieved to find it didn't hurt much. Concentrating for a brief second, she felt her horn begin to vibrate quickly, almost humming. It grew warmer as the healing magic coursed through her, soothing the wrenched muscles and reducing the inflammation. The pain subsided.
Continuing forwards, she moved to stand beside Briallan. "Hmm..." She pondered, smiling slightly as Tinsel flew back and perched upon her mane. "This spot looks good." Just off the beaten path was a small patch of earth devoid of much growth save for one or two strands of grass. Placing her hoof against the ground, her muscles clenched as she strove to score a groove into the earth. With a bit of labor, that small scratch upon the ground would soon be a hole large enough for the bird.
