Swishing her tail lazily at a few flies that had strayed too close, the rose-colored mare raised her head from the surface of the pool. Moisture lingered on her upper lip, forming a mustache that glistened as the sunlight glanced off it. Smacking her lips together a few times, she turned to survey her surroundings.
She was deep within the forest, as per usual. Though the vegetation was dense and the lighting dark, flickers of sunlight still shone through the canopy above. By Sakura's front hooves stretched out a small body of water. It was a pond, used by many as a watering hole. It was from this pool that she had just enjoyed a refreshing drink.
She peered into the trees. Was she alone, or would someone else appear to grace her with their presence?

She'd slipped off without her father once again, leaving the safety of the herd and it's boundaries behind. Once again she was off to see if she could possibly meet some one new. Sure.. the other herd members were.. nice but she wanted to expand her circle of friends. so far she'd only met few of soquili, a stallion that wore a skinwalker mask a mare who was now her greatest friend in the world, and some others that didn't have any attachments to the herd. Heavy hoof falls and the jingling of a bell, her tale tell sounds of her approach as she moved. She was big like her father, slightly bigger than a draft even. Her coat was soft, silky.. and above all else... fluffy.. Karloff's raccoon had once tried to keep her because of her softness which made her only want to take care of her coat further. She was a cuddly thing, personal boundaries were often lost to her since most of her communications had come from signals or touching. Still.. her lack of hearing left her some times.. timid to try to communicate, not wishing to attempt to speak and accidentally yell instead.

The jingling of a bell caught her attention as she turned her head towards the general direction of the noise. It was a pleasant tinkle, which Sakura instantly felt drawn to. What was the source? Taking a few, curious steps to look around a particularly large tree trunk, she peaked around the corner.
There ambled along a rather large draft mare. Not only was she large, but she was large for even a large Soquili. Yet there was something about her that appeared shy, perhaps it was in the way she walked? And on top of being fairly bulky, her fur was also very long and... fluffy. That was the only way to describe it. It gave her the appearance of a very big teddy bear.
"Hello!" She called out, whilst walking into full view. The pink mare had a bright smile upon her face. Perhaps now was the time to make a new friend?

Movement, it was the only thing that had drawn her attention to the pink mare. Her head had turned to follow her eyes as she stopped. A lopsided goofy grip then formed on her maw as she nodded a greeting. She hadn't heard anything or even seen the mare's mouth move so as far as she knew, she hadn't been spoken too. Her ears gave a rather happy flick as she shuffled her front legs causing her bell to make a happy jingle once more. Without her father or Amelia here she'd have to use signs and touching to communicate. Slowly, she crept towards the other mare, stopping in a distance that she could easily reach out and touch the other should she have need to do so.

Sakura beamed as the mare crept over towards her. She nickered back a second greeting in response to the nod, a broad smile spreading across her features in a mirror image of Idonea's.
She took the mare's silence to be something completely normal, as she was friendly enough. Perhaps it was just a remnant of the shyness she had detected before? And there was that bell again! So it had come from this mare. The sweet tinkle was delightful in the relatively silent forest.
"I'm Sakura." She stated happily, flicking her ears forwards.

Her eyes were locked at the movement that formed words. Sakura... She mouthed the word for herself as if sounding it out. Satisfied that she'd caught the name right, she gave a polite smile and a nod before mouthing carefully her own name. Idonea.....eee-doh-neh-ah.. She wanted it to be gotten as correctly as she could without having to risk shouting. Sure she could remember how to talk.. It was just pitch and volume control that some times just got away from her..

Her face furrowed slightly in confusion as the mare did not speak, instead mouthing first her own name and then another word. Sakura tried to concentrate. "Ee-doh-neh-ah? Is that right?" For a second she tried to think about why the mare was acting like that, "Oh, are you mute? Or..." She tried to think of another explanation, "Can you not hear me?" She tried to slow down her speech so the other mare could tell.
She'd never met anyone mute or deaf before. Sakura wasn't entirely sure how she should handle the situation, but she'd never backed down from a challenging conversation before! Though, perhaps the mare was neither deaf nor mute. Perhaps she just had a very sore throat and could not talk, though it did not seem the season for such illnesses and the mare looked perfectly healthy.
"Idonea." She repeated, almost to herself, trying to get it right. "It's a nice name." She smiled, flicking her ears forwards once more happily.

She nodded letting the other mare know that she thought she had gotten her name right. As she was asked if she was mute, she shook her head slowly. She then wiggled her ears bringing attention to them as she tick-tocked them back and forth. At the mention of deafness, she gave yet another nod. she hadn't always been as such but talking.. was something that required her to make sure her volume didn't get away with her in her excitement. She gave a small smile to the mare as she complimented on her name and mouthed a polite 'thank you' in return.

The mare's ear waggle was so adorable that Sakura couldn't help but beam, but the intention was clear. Though she was no expert in lip-reading, the rose colored mare still caught the 'thank you'. But only just.
So Idonea was deaf. Curiosity surged within her. "What's it like?"She said, remembering to slow down so the other mare could read what she said. Then she copied Idonea's ear waggle to show her she was referring to the deafness. Sakura's eyes glimmered only with interest. She harbored no ill intentions what so ever.

She gave a small shrug like motion. How could she explain what it was like not to be able to hear? She'd have to speak in order to explain... something she really wasn't too comfortable with. Taking a small breath she focused on not yelling. "Like living in utter silence.. you can see but the only sounds I hear are the ones from my memory." It was a simple enough explanation or at least she thought it was. Hopefully it'd be enough to suffice the other mare's curiosity.

Seeing the slight hesitation, Sakura understood that the mare seemed uncomfortable with talking. Still, it made her jump when she realized that the mare could talk very well. "Oh, so you used to be able to hear?" In her surprise, she forgot to slow down her speech and it came out a bit rushed. "Could you hear before?" She repeated, slowing down her words just a touch.
And just because she couldn't resist, she repeated the ear waggle to emphasize her point. The motion was adorable. "What happened?" Then she shook her head. That was an unfair question. Idonea didn't seem to like talking much, which was understandable. "You don't have to say the answer." She tacked on, trying to cover up her mistake.

She gave a small nod. as an answer then at the next question she frowned. Looking around, she spotted a log and with a massive hoof, he pushed it so that the bugs under it all scrambled about. there was the evil little bug she was looking for. with her hoof once more, she pointed an an earwig and then promptly squished the thing out of her own loathing for the bugs who'd destroyed her hearing.

Slanting her head to one side curiously, Sakura watched as the mare walked away from her and up to a log. How would a fallen tree cause her to become deaf? Had a twig hit hear in the ear? It was only when the fluffy Idonea pushed on the log to roll it over that Sakura realized that it wasn't the log but something underneath it. Confusion clouded her eyes for a brief moment, but she kept watching.
The squirming insects didn't bother her too much, not even when one ran towards her shadow and up her hoof. She simply lifted her foot and shook it gently, not even pausing to think. But that didn't mean she liked them either.
What did catch her attention, however, was the particular insect that Idonea was pointing to. She wasn't sure what it was called, but it was an average-sized bug. It had the standard six legs and the brown body and the scaly exterior and... now it was smushed. Eying the goo and cracked bits of exoskeleton that were the remains of the insect, she paused, thinking. The only strange thing about the insect had been the large pair of pincers on its rear end. How was that linked to Idonea's hearing?
"That bug... it made you deaf?"

Smiling sadly, she gave a small nod. It'd been so long that she'd heard anything.. even the birds sometimes looked odd. Silently singing and chirping along it was some times morbidly amusing watching the little feather heads' beaks move and hearing nothing. but her hearing loss also meant she needed to be more careful. Dangerous things could easily catch her unaware.

The idea was strange to Sakura. A tiny little insignificant bug, making you deaf? Well... perhaps it could. After all, her parents hadn't been able to tell her much about the world. What she knew was what she had learned through her own experiences, and through the cautions of strangers she met over time.
She memorized what the insect looked like, remembering to be careful not to get her ears too close. She'd never really minded insects, not even the spiders that liked to scuttle across her back when she accidentally walked into their webs. She didn't like them, no, but there was no particular aversion. Usually she would just calmly brush them off.
Tilting her head to one side, Sakura wondered what more to ask. Of course she had lots of questions like how did it happen? When? What did the bug do? But they were wordy and would be difficult for the mare to answer. Instead, she gave a curious look at the feathers braided into Idonea's mane, lifting her ears for a second and then lowering them as though to express her curiosity.
