Oloneric was feeling oddly restless today. Normally he was content to lay about his home, get a quiet lesson in with his grandpa about some aspect of nature and perhaps play with his brother if Syrrin didn't want to run off. But today nothing that was part of his normal routine seemed to satisfy the green colt. Instead he felt the need to move about, and so with grandpa and mother busy with who knows what Oloneric took the opportunity to give his legs the stretch they so desperately wished for. Prancing out into the large open meadow Oloneric let his energy take control.

Running, jumping, bucking and kicking the green colt was having the time of his life and certainly getting that need to move about sensation taken care of. As a couple of birds flew overhead Olo stopped his frolicking and wondered just what it would be like to fly. Bird, a lot of insects and even Aunt Mercy could fly, but he had never been able to, nor any of the rest of his family could. Just what was it like to soar high above the land? Now granted Aunt Mercy was still learning to fly so her flights were short and still relatively close to the ground. But even so, he yearned to know what it was like. Ignoring the fact that he didn't have wings, and never would for that matter, Oloneric raced across the meadow and when he thought he had enough speed up took a big leap into the air. His 'flight' lasted for about three whole seconds before gravity kicked in and sent the colt tumbling to the ground.

Oh that had been close, and he was certain that with enough speed and practice, and a whole lot of determination, that he could fly. The height and distance that he would 'fly' didn't matter so much to him, he just wanted to be free from the ground beneath his hooves. So gathering himself up from the ground Olo repeated his previous action, racing across the meadow as fast as his legs would let him and then jumping with all his might.

Mercy had been spending her morning in typical Mercy fashion, she'd woken up, practiced flying over the ravine until the rest of the herd woke up and started to fret about her safety - despite the fact that she'd never once hurt herself in her flight practice - and then she had gotten a bite to eat before wandering towards the meadow.

She had thought to spend some time looking for fresh flowers to decorate her families home with but upon arrival she found herself somewhat distracted by the antics of her nephew. Mercy could't quite figure out what the small colt was trying to do but she watched for several silent moments as he ran and jumped and ran and jumped with a look of fierce determination in his eyes. Perhaps he was trying to see how far he could jump? Mercy recalled such games when she was a foal. Ever fond of spending time with her nephews Mercy cast aside her plans of flower picking and trotted out onto the grass "Olo!' She called a happy greeting "what are you doing?"

While he wasn't making a great deal of progress in his tests of flight Oloneric was determined to not give up just yet. Perhaps he just needed to practice this every day until the muscles in his legs were strong enough for him to truly leave the ground. As he landed once again Olo was turning around ready to give it another try when a familiar voice rang out. Putting his tests on hold for the moment Oloneric trotted happily over to his aunt and nuzzled up against her leg in greeting. He really liked Mercy, she was always willing to have fun and could reach things the others couldn't, like apples that were on the higher branches of the trees.

With his greeting out of the way Oloneric glanced at the meadow and then up at Mercy. "I...was trying to see what it was like to fly." His head nodded approving of his own words and there didn't seem to be a hint of worry in his voice that he might not be able to due to lack of wings. Try hard enough and you can accomplish anything.

Mercy beamed at her nephew and lowered her head to return the nuzzles - Olo was suck a sweet little colt. His brother was too of course but he was also a bit more of a troublemaker and harder to catch up with so Mercy often found herself spending more time with Olo without actually meaning to do so.

At the colt explanation of what he had been doing Mercy nodded slightly as though it made perfect sense and to her it did - she had wondered for a long time what it would actually be like to fly before she had gotten up the courage to actually try and use her wings. Olo didn't have wings but that didn't have to stop him from flying at least a little bit right. Mercy thought perhaps she could fashion some sort of sling and take him with her on a flight but her father and sister would likely throw a fit if she tried it - so until she could figure out a way around that well..they'd have to think of something else.

Spotting a stump a little ways off Mercy motioned to it excitedly "Oh! I have an idea!" She told Olo before trotting towards the stump and explaining in a shout over her shoulder as she went "Maybe if you climbed up on the stump and jumped off you can go further!"

Oloneric nickered softly as Mercy returned the nuzzles. He really did love all the attention that he got from his family. Of course what he would really love is if he could somehow fly with her, but as far as he could tell there was no way to travel with her when she did fly around. Something to consider and think on another day, he supposed as Mercy was trotting away, talking about using a stump. Curious Oloneric trotted after her and listened to her explain. Use the stump as a starting point, that could work, however how would he get the speed up if he were standing on a stump? Or would he even need the speed since he were starting from off the ground already. Well there was only one way to find out.

Giving the stump a quick look over Olo found a spot where he could climb up, thanks to an old hole in the side that acting as the perfect step to place his hoof in. Once standing securely on top of the stump he glanced over at his aunt, flashing her an adorable little smile now that he was closer to her eye level, and then glanced out towards the meadow. He could do this, he could use the stump and see what it was like to fly. Tail wagged happily back and fourth as he concentrated, muscles tensing in preparation. One...two...three! Oloneric sprung forward with all his might. Oh this was amazing! So this is what it was like to see the world from above. Using the stump got him so much higher than when he had tried running and jumping.

Of course that darn gravity had to go and ruin everything. As soon as he was up, he started to go down. Hitting the ground, Oloneric tumbled slightly before quickly picking himself up, giving his body a firm shake and then looking towards Mercy with a large smile on his face. "Did you see that!" He was horribly excited about how high he had gone, even if it had only been for a couple of seconds.

Mercy waited patiently as Olo made his way up to the top of the stump, he was a good ways off the ground but Mercy wasn't all that worried - he wasn't high enough to actually hurt himself and the meadow grass was nice and soft for rough landings, a fact that she had found out herself a time or two when she had been learning to fly.

It was actually interesting to see her nephew nearly on the same level as her and she returned his smile with a beaming one of her own before prancing about in excitement as Olo got ready to jump. When he landed she vaulted over to him with a happy whinny "I did! You went so high! It was incredible!" She told him - okay maybe that was a bit of an overstatement but Olo was quite small and he had managed to leap quite a way higher then he had been earlier...and she was pretty sure that her words would make him happy. Making her nephew happy was one of the most important things to Mercy

Mercy's typical exuberance completely rubbed off on Olo and he pranced happily in place as she spoke. He had gone pretty high and he could only imagine how much higher he could go with a bit more practice - and perhaps a taller stump. But for now this stump was plenty high and would prove an excellent spot to continue to practice flying. Ready to try it again Oloneric quickly looped around the stump and climbed up again. Giving his butt a bit of a wiggle Oloneric half crouched down again. "Watch this, I'll go even higher." He exclaimed and then looked towards where he would likely be landing.

With a bit of a half step Oloneric launched off of the stump again. He wasn't entirely sure if he went higher or even farther this time or not, but the sensation and thrill were as great as the first time. Of course this time he managed to land a bit more gracefully than before, he stumbled slightly but otherwise managed to keep to his hooves. His smile however was so much bigger this time as he looked back to his Aunt. This was probably the best day ever, right now, and he couldn't even imagine doing anything better than this.

"I bet you will!" Mercy encouraged the colt as he looped around to take another try at it. Moving out of the way herself Mercy ruffled her wings and pricked her ears to show she was paying attention while her nephew crouched down and got ready to jump again. Mercy wasn't really sure that the colt actually went any higher or further - but that wasn't really the point and he looked so darn proud of himself for not falling when he landed that Mercy didn't really care if he had or not.

"You definitely went higher!" She told him with a nod of her head "And I bet as you practice and your muscles get stronger that you'll be able to go twice as high before your done" She further encouraged him because really what was the harm in it? Surely jumping off a stump and pretending to fly was better then wandering about getting into trouble.

Oloneric let out a whinny of happiness, it wasn't often he was encouraged so. Oh yes mother, father when he visited and grandpa all encouraged him but all in their own special way, but Mercy encouraged him in things that they would perhaps tell him to not do such things. There were reasons of course, they didn't want to see him get hurt. With the thrill of his first few test flights was now beginning to wear off and Oloneric was ready for something a bit calmer...and perhaps safer as well.

Giving his body a shake to rid his coat of any debris he picked up from his previous tumble the small colt looked up at his Aunt. "Now what?" As far as he figured the fun part was over and now they would move on to something more serious, but Aunt Mercy was far from the serious type. But perhaps she had something in mind that would fun yet safe and a bit educational as well - since Oloneric thrived on learning new things.

Mercy of course would have been perfectly happy to continue watching Olo try out his flight capabilities but a quick look at the foal as he picked himself up off the ground let her know that he was a bit tired from his time running and jumping - he was still young she reminded herself and who knew how long he had been trying before she came along and spotted him. Time for something a bit tamer then she supposed.

Thinking quickly she glanced around for some ideas even as Olo asked her what was next. "Well...maybe we could go and look for other things that fly - you know to study them and such"She suggested after a few moments of thinking. Olo liked to watch nature things and while it might not be her mot favorite thing to do in the world - far to tame - she wasn't entirely against it either.

Really? His aunt, the always looking for fun stuff and avoiding the serious stuff aunt was willing help him look for a study things that could fly. Well he would certainly be a fool to turn down such a rare opportunity, plus Mercy was like a flying expert compared to the rest of the herd so it would be a nice bonus to bring her along. "Okay." His short tail flicked about to show his happiness. Now where to start? His eyes scanned the area and landed upon a stand of trees not far off. Well birds, and a few other flying creatures often used trees for their homes as well as a source of food.

"Let's look over there." He pointed with his muzzle and then began to trot happily towards the trees. He wondered just what kind of creatures they would see. Not only winged creatures but land bound ones might be seen as well. Glancing back to make sure aunt Mercy was following Oloneric continued forward, ready to spend the rest of the afternoon observing nature.
