The sun filtered down from the waves and sunlight danced in beams across Koralo's garden. His pride. His joy. The seathi beamed as he fluttered his fins. A beam crossed over his back and warmed him. Slowly he swam forward eying his precious garden with a practiced eye. Carefully he pushed a stone upright to better show it off. Next he nipped some strands of seaweed to prune the plant back. Couldn't have it growing too out of hand.

Koralo swam over to check on some brightly colored corals. He loved the colors and varieties of them. Their beds were strictly maintained to show case them. A little work here and some scrapping there; Koralo felt satisfied to move on. He reached the 'fence' of his garden as he liked to think of it. Really it was just a surrounding of pretty rocks that he used to define his territory.

Ilyrana swam slowly through the nearly empty ocean, letting the slight current push her gently around as she hummed. She'd recently found the sea at the bottom of her native river, and was excited to explore the salty giant - however, she had not yet found anyone to explore it with. Mildly lonely but never bored, Illy had instead learned to study her surroundings.

First of all, the sea was blue-green - nothing at all like the murky brownish lake and green-white river she'd called home. Her voice echoed off things in an almost eerie way when she passed a place that held nothing but sand; indeed, it left and failed to return, which she wasn't used to. The resulting quietness of her songs, usually so full of feel, made her feel small, as if she were a minute disturbance in the vast arms of the world. So, when she got lonely, she whistled... Something her mother did when she was afraid. The high-pitched sound was one of the few tones that stayed by her side in the empty space, and that made her feel better.

Now, though, she was approaching a bright beacon in the dark isolation of the barren wasteland she'd passed through - a bright garden of strange, stiff-looking plants interlaced with seaweed, surrounded by a ring of rocks and playful sunbeams... Swimming toward it eagerly, Ilyrana failed to notice the small, blue-green seathi tending to it carefully.

Koralo was contemplating rearranging the rocks when a strange sound reached his ears. He couldn't figure out what it was or where it was coming from. His fins fluttered as he looked around. To his utter surprise, another seathi was swimming toward his garden. For a moment he just floated there, staring.

"Hey!" He moved to intercept at the boarder. However, once he got there, he just hovered unsure what to do. This wasn't a seathi he knew, and new ones coming into the area was pretty rare. Koralo ducked his head and twitched his tail.

Illy, failing to notice the seathi in front of her until it was too late, let out a squeak as she went tumbling over his ducked head in a mockery of the sea ballet. Backpedaling quickly, she met the green-haired male at the border of rocks which she now thought might be the boundary of his territory, in which case she might have overstepped her welcome already... "I'm so sorry," she apologized quickly, defending herself before he could say anything against her. "I just wanted to see it. I haven't seen anything but sand for too long."

Taking a deep breath, she took a long look at the strange rock/plant garden before her. It was bright and beautiful, and the splendor made her catch her breath. If she wasn't careful, she might end up making a song about it...

Koralo stared at the female as she went over his head and backpeddled. He fluttered his fins nervously. Now that he had stopped her, he tried to figure out what to do. Luckily, he was saved from having to do anything by her. Koralo glanced behind at his garden. His pride and joy.

"Um....... I guess you can come in and see it. But don't touch anything!" He eyed her. "You don't have anything slimy or crawly with you either do you?" Could this be another prank by his brother? Trying to plant a seaslug or worse in his garden.

Illy almost squealed with glee. She'd never thought she'd be this bubbly and dorky, but seeing this many vibrant colors after weeks of bland sand... She was as happy as a seagull taking a bath in freshwater.

"Thank you!" she said, and checked to make sure she didn't have anything slimy on her person. "Nope, nothing slimy or crawly. And I promise not to touch anything, unless you want me to help you with something." She gave him a genuine smile, and finned slowly inside the border of pretty rocks.

Looking around, eyes wide, Illy saw nothing but the splendor of an oasis in this small patch of coral that was in the midst of a desert-like sea. "You did all this?" she asked, looking at him with awe.

Koralo blinked. She was rather exuberant. He gave a smile when she enthused about being allowed in. Was his garden really that interesting? "You're welcome?" He laughed softly. Koralo gave a relieved flutter of his fins when she reaffirmed nothing slimy or crawly. Maybe his brother hadn't sent her then.

Happily he shifted to the side so she could swim inside. "You can ask about anything." He never really had help before. His family tried, but they just didn't understand. Koralo gave a happy look around at the familiar plants. "Yup. I gathered most of it myself, some my family gave me, and planted it here. I've been cultivating them for years." He sounded proud.

"Years?" she asked, turning to eye the male again. He didn't look that old! But then again, her kind lived an indeterminate amount of time... Her mother was only five, and she knew of no others that had died, let alone from old age. His proud tone didn't escape her - maybe he'd been tending this garden since foalhood? The corals certainly looked old enough, delicate and branching. "When did you get these corals?" she asked, voicing her inquiry before she even knew she had a question. He seemed like he'd done well with them, not that she really knew much about the strange plants that looked nearly skeletal. If she hadn't though otherwise, Illy might have thought they were the old bones of an animal.

Another thought occurred to her. "There's a family of seathi that live around here?" It was probably a long shot, judging by his appearance alone, that they were related - but there was a chance. As far as she could tell, seathi were few and far between: she and her mother were the only ones left in the lake, as far as either of them knew. The herd she'd once been a part of had departed for the sea long before Amitola had been born, and Illy's grandparents hadn't left too long after that. And he has a mane, she told herself, wondering if it was possible that he was related to her father, whom she'd never met. But the mane was something that no one in her mother's family possessed - so it could only come from her father.
