A small green colt half trotted through the grass head held low as he watched the insect before him with curious eyes. He had seen this type only once before and when grandpa explained that it was a centipede and had over forty legs he was completely fascinated with them. Every since that day he had kept his eyes open for another but had been unsuccessful in finding one until this morning. Had it not crawled over a rock earlier Oloneric might have very well missed it completely. Now he was following it closely, watching it's legs move in a wave like motion as it zig zagged through the grass.
Every now and then he would lose sight of it when it would slip under a bush or crawl up against a rock but with sheer determination he would find it again and continue to follow it's path. Where was it going? Why did it move like that? Where they all that red-orange color or were there other colors? He hoped that it was tracking down one of it's centipede friends so he could answer some of these questions. Of course following the insect so closely Oloneric was far from aware of the distance he had traveled from his home. He was still relatively close to it, but certainly had wandered beyond his normal short exploring range. But he just had to learn more about this centipede and the best way to learn something was through observation. And should your observational target be on the move constantly then the observer had to move as well.
Suddenly the centipede started to climb a small bush that was still only covered with buds that would one day soon turn into leaves and flowers. This made the insect easier to see and observe and Oloneric brought his hooves to a stop, peering at the centipede, head tipped slightly to the side and it wiggled about the branches of the bush.

Genevieve quietly trotted away from the small forest and woods her family called home. This was a big day for the little usdia filly, a very big day indeed. It was the first time she had been allowed to search for berries all alone! Her brother and sister weren't going to accompany her, and her mother and father had given her approval to leave. So long as she promised to return promptly and not go that far! Today was the first day of independance and the little filly was going to drink it up.
Carefully picking her way out of the woods, she took a look at the world laid out before her. The plains were welcoming and gentle, with tall grasses and various shrubbery incredibly inviting. There were a few rogue trees, but none were grouped together like the larger forest of her home. The sky was so big and bright and blue . . . often it was hideen by the foliage of the forest, but today she could see it clearly! It was amazing. Is this the reason her older sister, Francesca, always roamed? If this was how different the world looked at the edge of the woods, what did the mountains look like, or the ocean, or the other side of the world?
For a moment, the little filly got lost in a daydream, wondering what it would be like to be so far from home she couldn't walk to her mother, or find her siblings. To be days. . .weeks. . .months away in journey. Gennie wasn't sure she felt so certain about wanting to go far, but a small part of her did want to see some of the world. Just not today, because Esta would certainly scold her if she dug up too much trouble.
She was out for berries, after all. Somehow, amazingly, she'd gotten sidetracked from her mission at hand. Heaving a small sigh, the little usdia almost turned to head back in to the woods when something caught her eye. There was a scuffling sound, and movement in the tall grasses. Vibrant green eyes widened in a moments curiosity and worry - what if this was a panther meant to hunt her and eat her? What if it was a giant kalona that was going to snap her up for lunch!? What if it was a - - -
An usdia colt? Sure enough, her train wreck of ideas came to a screeching halt when she watched another usdia trot out of the grasses and over to a nearby tree. He was staring at the ground, following something, but what Genevieve couldn't be certain. Odd really . . . This was the first stranger she'd ever met, and he didn't look anything like her family. First off, he was terribly green. While perhaps that wasn't odd considering her mish-mash of colors, in her family most of them were pale or brown. She was a bit of an oddety. Secondly, his colors were tickled with what looked like web sort of markings . . . .and little skulls! Really now, he did look different, and was definitely no relation of hers!
A stranger.
Her very first stranger! And all alone too. Unable to help herself, she took a few steps forward, her stubby tail wagging a bit. "Hey . . . What. . .what're ya looking at?" Genevieve tentatively stepped forward, out of the woods and closer to the tree he was staring at so firmly. Hopefully he'd be a nice colt, she didn't want to have to go back home so soon!

As the centipede wiggled it's way around the branches, climbing higher in the bush Oloneric had to turn his head this way and that, as well as shifting his body around to ensure he didn't lose sight of it. Look att he way it's many legs moved like waves, propelling it forward with such great speed. The antennae wriggled around feeling for what was ahead of it. He tried to imagine just what it would be like to have antennae, using them to feel around his surroundings. What would they tell him about the things around him? Would it allow him to learn things better? He would certainly need to ask grandfather when he returned home if there were any Soquili that also had antennae.
All these thoughts were distracting him from the task at hand, and that allowed for his subject of observation to nearly get away. Luckily for Oloneric the centipede was quite long and it would take more than a moment of distraction for it to completely sneak out of sight. The bright colors upon it's body also helped the colt keep track of the bug. As it settled upon a thick branch full buds Oloneric took a step around the bush to try to get a better look at it. So deeply concentrating upon the centipede that the colt failed to see the approach of another. It was not until the filly spoke that Oloneric realized he was not alone and he let out a yelp of surprise and turned his head to see just who had snuck up on him.
His eyes fell upon a filly of his own kind, splashed with an interesting number and combination of colors. Why she was as colorful as some of the butterflies he had seen floating about the flower patches at home. He stared at her with curious eyes for a few moments, too stunned to even speak. When finally her question broke though his mind he smiled a bit and looked towards the bush. "Oh...umm....it's a centipede." A centipede that he had now managed to lose track of. Worried the colt scanned the branches until finally after believing he had lost it for sure, but ah there curled into the crock of two branches.
"There." He said in a quiet voice, motioning with his muzzle to show the filly just what he had been looking at and hoped that she would appreciate it as much as he did.

Genevieve almost raised a brow as he admitted to bug watching. While the young filly herself found an interest in butterflies, and certainly liked to watch caterpillars and beetles sometimes that roamed near her home, she never called it a hobby. And she never met someone who was actually admitted to staring at a centipede as it crawled and shimmied up a tree. Centipedes weren't exactly pretty when it came to bugs and insects, and they were a little creepy with their excessive amounts of legs.
Still, the violet maned filly wasn't going to judge the stranger just because he had some odd hobbies. Besides, when was the last time she had watched a centipede crawl? Stepping forward, the young foal picked her way over to the green colts side. Her eyes searched the tree before finally spotting the source of movement. "Look at all those legs!" She breathed, simultaneously appalled and amazed. The way it wriggled and wormed up the tree, Genevieve couldn't help but wonder where it might be heading. "I wonder what it thinks of us . . . .it is awfully tiny and we are awfully big."
As the bug scurried out of sight, Genevieve looked over at her new companion. She was glad he was of a small variety, just like she. While she had yet to meet a full sized soquili, her mother had spoken of such things and she was aware there were many creatures much larger than she. While Genevieve had yet to meet them, she didn't expect her mother to steer her wrong with words of caution.
"I wonder what it would be like to have a billion legs," She sighed, glancing down at her own hooves. "I wonder if they ever get tangled or if it really uses all of them? Cause it seems like a lot of little legs for one little bug," she added thoughtfully with a smile.

Oloneric smiled a bit as the filly spotted the centipede and seemed pretty amazed by the number of legs that it had. In fact, he couldn't help but let out a small laugh. "It probably thinks we're enormous!" Which was a ridiculous thought considering they were the smallest Soquili in the lands and it was hard to think of being big. To the little centipede they were huge, it would have been like the centipede was an usdia and the two foals were big Kalona or something. An amusing thought but not quite reality. He would never be large, not that he minded, no he liked his size though he did look forward to when he would be a bit older and a bit bigger and therefore able to do more things.
Frowning as the bug crawled out of sight Oloneric twisted his head this way and that before he finally spotted it again. The insect was resting on the back of the branch. Slowly he turned his attention to the filly. He liked her coloring, it somewhat reminded him of a butterfly he had seen once. Funny how his initial knowledge of insects from his time with his grandpa had grown into a full on obsession where he found a comparison to insects in just about everything he saw. Well there were far worse things to be obsessed with and knowledge was something to cherish, even if it was on a single subject.
"Oh they don't have a billion legs. They have about forty or so. I've tried counting them once but they don't stay still for long." He was certain that grandpa had once told him that centipedes had a certain number of legs, but for once his insect facts seemed to be eluding him. Ah, well at least he had given her some of the facts about them and more where about to come. "I don't know if they ever get tangled or not, but I know they use them all. They move them in waves, to help glide across things smoothly." This had really been the first time he had been able to watch a centipede for a certain amount of time so he was still gathering information about their lives and how they lived in the world.
His eyes returned to the tree for a moment, the centipede was still in the same spot as before but was mostly obscured by the branch, he wouldn't get many observations until it moved again. Suddenly he realized that he had no idea who this little filly was, and she certainly didn't know who he was. Head swinging around Oloneric looked towards her once more. "Uh...I'm Oloneric. What's your name? Do you live around here?"
