It was a dreary afternoon. Dark clouds were rolling over the mountains, bringing with them the threat of rain and possible storms. The low rumble of thunder could be heard, but it was a threat that wasn't quite upon the mare that picked her way through the mountains. She wasn't concerned about a spring shower, and welcomed the announcement. A good rain would perk up the greenery that was recovering from the fierce winter, it would melt the last of the snows that obstinately clung to the land, and it would (most immediately) wash the dust and dirt from her blue coat!

Eponine had come far from her homeland where her father, mother, and a few of her brothers resided. There were many memories back in the open spaces of the plains, and while many were good, there were just as many bittersweet. Back with her family, all she could see and remember were her mistakes . . .so many of them. Mistakes she could never erase, mistakes she could never forget. That was where she had first met Ezriel, the broken stallion he was . . .it was where she had given birth to her unexpected foals . . .it was where Ezriel had taken her son before he'd even opened his eyes. . . it was where she raised Cassiel, and where her daughter had proclaimed her hate. It was where Eponine had lived, had cried, and had tried desperately to make up for her young and foolish actions. . . .

While there was good and love from her family in those lands, the dark shadows that haunted her were too hard and too strong to forget. If only she could go back in time and redo everything. Maybe her daughter wouldn't have cut ties and ran; maybe she wouldn't have met and lost love twice; maybe she would have found and created a happy ending.

Still . . like the stories she grew up on, like the stories she knew, Eponine had been foolish to believe she might have been the character who had a happy ending. There were lots of faces in legends, but the horseshoe only fit one hoof . . . of one mare . . .and the rest were out of luck. Not every ending is of happiness and joy.

Heaving a sigh, the mare gave a shake of her head. No. She wasn't going to think of such things. For now, she would at least try to be happy and content with her lot in life. Here she was, back in the mountains, a place she had been born in. She didn't remember much about that time, but did remember the move from the cliffsides to the plains. Everything was quiet, was still, with the occasional splash of rain dotting her coat, the large pines and firs surrounding her ever welcoming. A few birds chirruped, but for the most part all was still.

There was peace here, and peace was something Eponine desperately needed.

User Image Rain..why was it always rain? Hakon thought to himself as he trotted up the trail, his mane plastered to his neck. He never did like being wet, but if he had to be he would much more prefer a quick down pour that got you soaked all at once rather then this steady drizzle that made you wet all the way down to your bones. Luckily, for now, he had out trotted it, but it was following him, and swiftly.

Still, there should be just enough time to make it to his bolt hole of a cave before the real storm unleashed, and by the smell of ozone in the air, it was going to be a real show. He tossed his head and wickered, he did enjoy a good thunder show, he was, after all, mountain born and breed, but being an adult now he did not have the reckless fascination he had as a colt, and preferred to watch them under some kind of cover, dry cover was best. He knew just the place and was not far form it.

Picking up his pace, he trotted around the bend in the trail right before he had to veer off into the undergrowth to make the cave, and nearly ran nose to nose with a strange mare. Eyes wide he almost lost his footing, as it was he ended up with his rump practically on the ground to keep from bowling her over.

" Whoa...where the heck did you come from?" he asked, his voice still filled with his surprise, thought the tone sounded more shocked than angered, or holding any ill will. " You okay? I didn't hurt you did I?"

Eponine was so lost in thought she didn't recognize the signs of an approaching stranger. The sound of his hooves was mostly silent due to the grass and gravel and soil of the mountain. While larger rocks and steep hills surrounded the area, Eponine was far from the peak of the mountain and the woods was still green and fertile. Strange really. She had always thought the mountains to be snow capped and empty - but up to a certain altitude, life thrived.

Unfortunately though, it didn't thrive enough for the mare to expect to run in to another. Especially one who was practically bounding up the hill side. By the time her ears instinctively turned to warn her of anothers approach, and she snapped out of her reverie, it was far too late. Gasping in surprise, Eponine herself started, half-rearing back in an attempt to jerk out of the way of the other.

The effect meant her ears were pinned with surprise and her blue eyes as wide as plates. Quickly dropping back to four legs, she found herself staring at what appeared to be a just as startled stallion. He had a dark brown coat with paler brown patches. An unusual mix, but they set off the greenest eyes she'd ever seen. And was that . . .a horn? A unicorn!

"Oh I b-b-beg p-pardon!" She stammered, her chest beating a million beats a second. Only now did she feel herself flush from embarrassment of the close call, and she dipped her head apologetically. What was she doing here? Oh dear. Had she stumbled upon someones territory or lands unknowingly? Was she inadvertently intruding? "I'm s-s-sorry, I. . .I d-d-don't mean to intrude. I was j-j-just w-walking . . .b-b-but I'm on my way out, p-p-promise!" It was clear the more she spoke that her earlier stammering wasn't just from surprise. Obviously she had a speech impediment of some sort, a natural stutter. Unfortunately for Hakon, it only grew worse when she was anxious.

Hakon blinked, his jade green eyes regarding her as he worked out what she was saying over the sound of the storm. Understanding flickered across his expression and he gave her a warm half smile as he got his hooves back under him.

" Intrude?" he whickered a chuckle," hardly, its a free pass here. No one owns this land, and everyone uses this trail, but if you are on your way out you're going to get hit by this storm hard. I wouldn't recommend it."

Hakon tilted his head to one side, his eyes smiling at her with a natural easy charm, " I was heading to a bolt hole, its a decent enough place to shelter in this kind of weather. You can join me if you care to."

The stallion backed up a pace, tossing his mane as another lighting bolt crackled through the sky, " This way, we'd best hurry. Standing out while the lighting gods are playing catch is a good way to end up crispy."
