the weather hadn't been the best that spring. Storms ravaged the forest home of the small family and the river that ran through the area was swollen by both the rain and the run off from then distant mountains. after weeks, at least it seemed like that long, the rain slowly stopped and the sun started to poke through the thick clouds that sagged over head. A young nova drifted against the current of the river, her black tail flicking uncaring behind her as deep orchid eyes watched the shore. She was hoping to see her parents today, to show them how big she had gotten, that she looked much like her grandfather, whom had raised her since she couldn't survive out of the water for too long. Thinking back it made her giggle what a chore meal times were those first days of her life.
Closing her eyes, Nina didn't see the rush of mud and muck that was surging down her river home. Only when the sound of crashing logs against the rocks that normally poked the surface like teeth, did she look. Opening her mouth to cry out, it was filled with muddy water as the mudslide crashed into her head on, Thrown backwards, head over tail, Nina spat out the mud trying to clear her mouth of the nasty stuff. Shaking her mud matted mane, something caught her tail and dragged her under. Wiggling, flicking her tail in the thick current it was hard to move as the mud surged on. With burning lungs and tiring muscles, she made for the surface or what she thought was the surface,
This time she was wrong in her direction, being confused and twisted around. Hooves impacted against the rocky bottom before her head smacked off something. Blindly, head now aching she slipped into an uneasy unconsciousness. Nina didn't know how much time passed as she was dragged along with the mud, passing through the river she had called home and out into open ocean. The current through her clear as it broke over the basin. She didn't feel the new plunge into the salty water and the mud that coated her body pulling free. Raising to the surface on her back, mouth slightly open, the new current pulled her further away from her home and stranger waters. Smaller fish nibbled at her skin, cleaning off whatever traveled with her from the freshwater. Finally she was tossed upon a sandy beach, under the bright sun as the clouds that hung were cast away. With a groan, Nina slipped between the waking and sleep worlds, unaware that she was in danger.
