Some people use certain objects and places to help them focus and meditate.

For example: This is why there are so many statues of Buddha out there in the world. Buddha is used by Buddhists, Zen practioners and some spiritualists as a point of focus, a representation of what we could all acheive through meditation. I even have a Buddha statue in my meditation area because I have always held a deep respect for him and consider him to be a great prophet. He has reached a level of knowledge through meditation that most can only dream about and many Buddhists hope to achieve. Although, I have my Buddha statue surrounded by nature elements.
Even though that is my point of focus, I think I meditate best while near water.

To get to the point with all this, I raise the question do you have favorite areas or points of focus to help you meditate? Care to share for those in here that do not but could use the extra help?

There are also guided meditation CDs out there but I have never tried one so I don't know how well they help. I have doen guided deep relaxation which was fantastic.

I tend to do chanting/singing actually. I close my eyes and focus on the "feel" of my voice, that slight vibration in your body (specifically the chest area) created when you're talking. I just use a simple chant that I don't need to think about when saying.

Ah yes, that is one I forgot, thank you. I know a few people that use chants for meditation.

I, too, meditate best near water, and I also chant (though it's normally nonsense, just something to eliminate my focus on anything else. A lot of times I resort to Jabberwocky or lyrics from The Hush Sound. Maybe I should look into something deeper. blaugh )

My spot is normally on a large rock in the middle of a stream in the middle of the woods near my apartment. It's actually where I do a lot of my work, but it is just amazing for meditating. If anyone ever tells you sitting on a giant flat rock is uncomfortable, they are wrong. Or they have a bad rock.

When at my dorm and the weather was bad, I'd meditate under my bed, it was on risers and high up to begin with, or on top of my closet. I like being hidden for meditation, I find that eliminates distractions as obvious as it is.
At home, I usually go sit on a section of my rooftop where I can see, but not be seen. I always meditate at night and during early parts of the morning.

I also prefer meditating in the dark or by candle light/dim lighting. I usually have to hear the sound of water movements, it calms and soothes me. I do usually chant, almost always it's been the maha-mantra [hare kirshna one] or "Om Mani Padme Hum" which translates to "The jewel is in the lotus or praise to the jewel in the lotus".

I like how you do things like that to make your meditations work for you. The hiding, water (which I also enjoy using) and the chant, which is quite lovely by the way.

I am honestly one of the worst people out there when it comes to meditating. I swear, I can't keep my mind clear for that long. My husband always teases me, saying that if I have trouble keeping my mouth shut for five minutes, there's no way I can keep my mind quiet. And he's totally right. But, I have had some good sessions, and it's something I love to attempt, even if I generally fail at it.

I generally need to be out of the apartment. I just can't focus indoors; there's always some noise somewhere, even if it's just the AC or someone moving around up a few floors, or rain hitting a window. And there can't be any people around at all. I usually get up early to meditate, and either go out down by the bay, crawl on a few rocks I'm sure I'm not supposed to, and just sit there by the water. Or, if I don't manage to get up before anyone will be driving by or going on morning strolls, I go down to the pool. There's never anyone there until ten or later, so I'm safe, and you can't hear the cars below from the 13th floor. Whoops, "Lower Level" not 13th. My bad. Forgot people were superstitious. xD But yeah, I actually have had some of my best meditating sessions by hopping into the pool and floating on my back. It takes enough focus, controlling the breathing in the right way, that I don't have nearly as much problems with random thoughts floating by. But that's just me, I've never run into anyone else who floats in a pool to meditate. xD

When I didn't live in the city, I always would go out to the woods and find a comfortable spot, too; it's just too much of a hassle now. But there used to be this perfect little clearing just a half mile in, and it even had a rock that, though it wasn't perfectly flat or anything, was absolutely amazing for an alter for a full-moon ritual. Damn, I miss that place.

I am oft hard-pressed for meditation time, but I can't seem to come Out of my meditation, having to have someone pull me out, or I fall asleep. I find that a terrible happenstance that needs to be rectified [my job pulls a lot out of me].

I use a phrase, but music works as well--something with drums my favorite.
