Mamanbou looked around furtively as she approached the wildebeest carcass. It had been far, far too long since she had a decent meal, and all she wanted was to eat in peace. She rarely, if ever, had time to hunt properly. She was always, always, always on the move and prey beasts rarely stood still to let her have a clean and easy kill.
Just as rare were fortunate findings of meaty caracasses - if jackals, vultures, or hyenas didn't get to a large feline's kill first, sometimes what little meat there was was too rotten to eat. And wild dogs never left any meat on the bones at all. Sometimes they didn't even leave the bones, but crunched everything down to take back to their pups as vomit.
That idea tended to grate on Mamanbou's nerves. Who, even as a baby, wanted to eat vomit? Not her, that's for sure. She just wanted a quiet meal.
Alas, it was not to happen.

For who should be lurking just where he couldn't be seen in the tall grass, also lured by a free effortless meal? Of course that fast and ridiculous cheetah who wasn't about to let a free meal or a pretty lady pass him by. "Hey there, I'm Waka, do mind if we share, pretty lady? I mean I'm pretty sure there's enough here for both of us. If not I will totally let you have more, but I'm hungry and if I have to catch something else too I could use a little energy." Maybe if he stopped talking a mile a minute he could use some of that energy for hunting.

Mamanbou was not pleased to see another scavenger. "Eat what you want, and stop talking so much" she said shortly, and returned her attention to the wildebeest. She grabbed a leg end in her teeth, and ripped it away from the rest of the carcass. Even if the cheetah managed to get a good bit of the meat - unlikely if he couldn't stop talking, much more likely if he ate as fast as he talked - the leg meat would give her enough energy to make it to the next meal. Hopefully one that would not be interrupted.

"Well excuse me for being friendly and polite. By the way, have you come from the north? I'm heading in that direction and I'm wondering if the herds are still good up that way." Naturally, he chose to share a meal with an impolite savage. Great. Oh well nothing could keep Waka's spirits down for long, and a free meal was perfect for lifting his mood once more.
It was good meat too. Not spoiled at all, pretty much a miracle. It was great not to have to expend the amount of effort and energy it usually required to get a good meal around here. He ate with relish, free food was a rarity and it always seemed to taste better. Company also made food better. Well most of the time.
He took a moment to study his meal partner. She was a lovely lioness. Pity it was spoiled by the permanent frown across her brow. "You're a very pretty lioness, you shouldn't frown so much."

After pausing to chew thoroughly and swallow -annoyance wasn't any reason to risk choking on her meat - Mamanbou turned her yellow eyes on the cheetah. "Tell me, have you ever been on the run for your life? And not from a stampede or a flood, but from another hunter?"

"Can't say I have, no. But who would be hunting a lioness successfully? Couldn't you just kick their but four ways to into next week?" Surely if that solution didn't work she could find some friends to help her? Such a pretty girl could bat her eyelashes and males would fall at her feet to help her with whatever was hunting her. Waka sure would.

"Not when they happen to be a lion almost twice my size driven onward by madness and obsession, no." Mamanbou didn't have anyone to turn to - nor had she ever. The result was a fairly tough lioness, who, nonetheless, wasn't much of a fighter and had a tendency to be rude when she thought people were wasting her time. Or just when she didn't fee like talking.
She went back to wrangling the shreds of meat off the carcass.

"Well, that's unfortunate." And it was. Who would want anyone that's insane and obsessed following them around? "Can't you just get a bunch of people to help you defeat him?" He brought a paw up and used a claw to pry a bit of tough tendon from between his teeth. "I mean you're pretty enough to bewitch some bigger stronger lions to fight with you." He picked through the carcass for some more tender meat.

Mamanbou turned away. "Maybe because most of my family and friends are dead or ran away thanks to the same murderer, and the last time I tried to get help he targeted the ones who wanted to help me as well. I don't want any more deaths because of me."
Mamanbou bowed her head for a moment, and looked like she might be sobbing. She shook her head after a moment though, and went back to eating. She was a very practical creature, in the end.

Waka's ears went back. "I'm sorry." And he was. It was such a shame that such a pretty lady couldn't be courteous to a fellow traveler because she was so strung out from running from some oversized, brain rotted lion. "I'd help you fight him off, though I seriously doubt that my svelt and slender form would be of much help. Have you considered joining a pride and getting them to fend the reprehensible scoundrel off?" He was tempted to offer to groom her. One had to take their comforts where they found them. But for once his self preservation instincts kicked in and he kept his offers of bathing her to himself.

"I have, thank you, but I'm still looking for something that works for me. It's not easy to find a place that works." Mamanbou decided it would be best to gulp down as much meat as she could and get away from the rest of the carcass and this cheetah before the conversation could stretch out much more. She should have covered more ground by now.
She ripped off more meat and started masticating as quickly as she could.

"That's the truth." Waka said. "I would like to be in a pride too, but they're so difficult to mesh with sometimes." He left it at that and continued to eat. It had finally sunk in that the lioness was in a hurry and that any further trying of her patience could mean being banned from her kill.
Being smaller meant that he was sated first. Waka washed his face and paws. "Thank you for sharing your meal and your company. I hope you find what you're looking for. Such a pretty lady shouldn't be troubled like you are." He nodded respectfully and trotted away.
