Naming your characters has been around since the NES, and is often a major component in RPG's. So knowing this, we have all likely had to name characters before.
So how do you go about naming them? Do you just name them whatever the characters' defaults are? Do you name them after personal things and people you know? Do you name them funny things? There are all sorts of possibilities, but what do you usually go with?

I've always just made up my own names, though I'll pick random stuff to base them on. Sometimes it's just off the top of my head, and other times it has something to do with who the character is. Then, of course, if it's a game I've played often, I start naming them after friends 'n stuff or make joke names. Sooo...technically, all of the above!
For instance: I've played the new game plus on Chrono Trigger so often that I started each new game with a theme for the names. Last couple were: Words little kids find funny, L33T speak, swear words, friend's names, etc. I've also played Final Fantasy 7 while naming everyone after other characters in the game for lovely confusion.

I generally have a few generic names for characters. However there are times I need create a new name for certain characters I may come across.

If it's something like RP FPS like Fallout I'll usually use my name or a nickname of mine. Or if its more fantasy like, such as Oblivion, I'll make up a name. But if I'm Rping online I'll choose a best fitting name for the character I'm thinking of.

I usually go by my trademark name if its something multiplayer. if not, then I just go with a name that fits them.

If the characters are male, I name them after characters from different video games. If its female, I name it after myself. Unless its Zelda, then I have to name it after the default name

Wow, this depends totally on the character and how much I like it, if I like a character I generally don't change the name. If I dislike the character I name them weird things, like Tidus in FFX and the rival in all Pokémon game, I name them Gnupung for most times, it's swedish for Wildebeest Scrotum sweatdrop

Depends. Usually, I name them something fitting. But my first male characters (My first character, in other words) tends to be named "Alice". Alice Shepard, Alice Aeducan, Alice Hawke... Alice the Argonian assassin...
Why? I have no idea.

I usually keep default names but in games where you can create characters I usually use Kyosuke, Rokusho, Alia and Alicia. Still working on more. I'm tired of overused names like Chaos, Blade or Blaze.
