"Yes, father," Tasso said, feeling she'd repeated the phrase a thousand times before. Still, her determination to prove she was the best of her litter drove her to follow her father with quiet, stolid obedience. He would respect her, no matter what it took.
With nary a glance back at his daughter, Ralastor continued on his march around the lands he'd claimed as his own. The lecture he constantly spewed at his children about guarding the area was used, tired - the same diatribe he'd given himself when he was their age. Regardless, there was a certain obedience he expected of them - obedience he'd get, or else punishment would not be far behind. Age did not excuse weakness. Nothing excused weakness, and with that thought Ralastor flicked his attention to his daughter Tasso, as if to check for any visible imperfections.
"Always be ready to fight," he grumbled at her, for no real reason. "If you aren't prepared to fight for your land, it isn't your land at all." His daughter nodded her head and did her best to look strong and proud, despite the fact that she knew his attention was always on his sons. Again, she cursed whatever strange powers had made her female - and again she cursed whatever strange powers had made her so incapable of satisfying her father's expectations.
"I smell something," she said suddenly, before she was entirely sure it was actually another wolf. If Tasso noticed it before her father did, surely he'd be forced to give her some sort of recognition. She only hoped the scent was really that of a strange wolf.

Nox trailed behind his father and his sister, he knew that Ralastor felt him to be a huge disappointment, It wasn't Nox's fault he was like he was, he was just....Nox .. Quirks and all.
He walked behind Tasso, who walked behind Ralastor and he sighed. He knew how hard Tasso tried to Impress their father, Nox would do the same but he didn't feel that same urge to prove himself as she did. He was about to catch up to her and walk beside her when he caught his father's glance at her. He frowned a little but said nothing, he did move to walk beside her, though he was bigger in bulk, he always felt smaller beside her. She was strong, he ...wasn't.. not really, not aside from his.. 'episodes'
He stopped when she spoke suddenly, the sound making him jump a little as he's been lost in his mind for a moment, listening to the birds and thinking of nothing in particular. His nose worked to detect the scent she had found but he couldn't smell it. He glanced at her, not daring to speak just yet, not until their father had.

Coal felt annoyed..angry. That pack..taking his kill right from under his nose, attacking him and seeing past his manipulative ways. One day they would all pay, them and that cursed female that he had wooed. Divine Cure, the wolfess who had his son always at her side ready to fight Coal off should he get close. Not that the inky black wolf enjoyed pups, he just didn't want his only son to become a soft little weakling like Divine. The male being so lost in thought didn't notice the scents sifting in the wind, he didn't hear the noise of paws hitting the earth until the three were too close for comfort.
Jerking ever so slightly the already irritable gamma froze his muscles tensed, his lips lifted letting loose a strong growl of warning. No one would push him around today. Not again! "Show yourselves! Fight like a real warrior you cowards!" Adrenaline rushed through Coal, a good fight might be nice. A little bloodshed would help him feel better and, stronger. Today he wouldn't act submissive or pretend to bow to another wolf..no.
"Three against one isn't a very fair fight..but, I will fight you all if I must." Stupid? It very well could be stupid and moronic to challenge three unseen wolves still Coal did so boldly unafraid, unyielding. Hopefully the three would be a true challenge for him, it would be such a pity to waste his time on weaklings.

"Come out of hiding?" Ralastor asked, seeming bemused, sure of himself. This would be an excellent test of his children's strength, of their training. "You're the one infringing on our territory. But don't worry; two of our younglings should be more than enough to take down a wolf foolish enough to wander onto our turf without backup." He sneered, standing back and enjoying the show. "Well done, girl," the alpha purred, "Now prove you can do more than just use your nose." The adolescent prickled with determination, eyes locked on the outsider.
"Yes, father."
"Nox! Tasso!" Ralastor's lip curled into an ugly expression halfway between a smirk and a snarl. "Get him."
Tasso began to circle, head low, senses almost completely focused on the dark male. Out of the corner of her eye, she watched her brother to see what he would do. Teamwork, she recited in her head, work as a unit. Where was Brutus? Father wouldn't be pleased by his absence - unless he'd ordered Brutus to go do something secret. Her brothers did always seem to get picked for that sort of thing. Well, she would prove she could fight just as well as either of them.

"Three against one? I'm afraid your numbers are wrong," said a voice from the shadows. Brutus, circling in behind the stranger wolf, had joined the fray. ... Though it seemed that he was in no hurry to fight. Instead he spoke up again. "Father, the pack this one came from has moved on. Their scent on him is strong, but they are not within range." Nor would they have come to this wolf's aid. As Tasso had suspected, Brutus had had an important mission. "Father... there's something else."
As Brutus shifted back and forth, observing this stranger wolf, he looked up at Ralastor across the distance. "A female. A lone female. I scented her not far from here." A female within their territory? But that female had seemed to toy with him, leading him on a merry chase before disappearing entirely. "She was swift, and wary. I never caught sight of her, but her scent is all over the western range of our lands."
It had almost been like she had been teasing him, as if she had known she had been stalked. He had been as subtle as he knew how to be. Ah, but that was a matter for another time. For now, father had ordered Tasso and Nox to take this fool down. If they seemed to be having trouble, Brutus would interfere. But only then. It was time enough for Tasso and Nox to prove themselves.

Nox hung back a little when he and Tasso were ordered to attack ... he didn't like conflict but knew better than to be submissive in front of a stranger when his father was there. he bared his teeth but let his sister approach first, twitching an ear as Brutus appeared. He circled a little wider than Tasso did, and in the opposite direction. one wolf couldn't watch the two of them at the same time, this much he learnt from Ralastor. He would distract the stranger male, let Tasso take the first blood. Nox wasn't that bothered with approval, not like Tasso but he wouldn't disobey.
He darted in, nipping at the male's flank as he darted back away hopefully before he got bitten in return. For now, with Nox, this would be a game of fast light attacks, not causing much damage but instead, being more irritating and distracting.

Dark twinges of annoyance and anger boiled up inside Coal, he had never been a kind or submissive wolf. Especially when it came to blundering idiotic females! Snarling softly his ears flicked his muscles prepared and tensed. Of course they had to be traveling together, packs another irritation in the dark males world. Flickering eyes took in the three siblings then the male, the alpha that stood so proudly yet sent in children to fight him! "Whelps..at least let the males only fight. Females are too weak and below me..though I will gladly harm her if that is your wish. I see it is a mighty packs way to corner one wolf against three..how very honorable of you." Sneering Coal noticed Nox's sudden lunge for his flank his own head turning but, his jaws closed around fur only. Luckily the now very pissed off gamma only felt a tiny pinprick of blood had been drawn. "Fine then..if that is your wish..the cocky and young, will perish beneath my paws." Hunching down Coal worked on keeping his softer underbelly unexposed..he knew how to fight. Years of killing and, running wild had taught him but, he had only been in a few big fights such as this and, those times he had help. Singling out Tasso he made his move darting about trying to slip around her his maw parting when he feinted to the right then lunged to the left with his fangs ready to attack any flesh he came in contact with. It would only work if she didn't dodge in time and, if her brothers were slow to react to his quick movements. "Come pups! Play with me! I will so cherish your yelps of pain.." Snarling and rumbling Coal's eyes flicked too and fro his paws shifting restlessly. A still wolf was a dead wolf. He had initiated a deadly dance but, maybe by some stroke of luck he could conquer one or two of them.

Already on edge with her father’s eyes upon her, Tasso was coiled tightly and sensitive to every movement of her prey, totally focused. The coldness of her eyes reflected her internal mantra of ferocity and strength. Thus, when the dark male rogue whipped at her, she started to move to avoid the feint, then caught on to his plan and slipped out of the way of the real attack, using her smaller size to her advantage. Dancing away, she bared her fangs at him in a snarl. She knew she had to focus, but couldn’t resist growling: “Don’t underestimate us, boy.”
Hearing this, Ralastor smiled a little. It was something Tasso had clearly picked up from him – an insult he usually threw at his sons to provoke them and simultaneously remind them of their place in the pack. Interesting that she was emulating him. Was she doing it consciously?

"We do not concern ourselves with such trivial things as honor, wolf... at least by your rather limited definition." The barbs were intended to irritate the stranger, intended to enrage him, hopefully to the point where he would make stupid mistakes. That was what Brutus wanted, particularly as his father was watching-- though he did not want to impress him, it was difficult to entirely avoid the instinct to perform well when his father watched. The alternative was... far worse. "I am disinclined to acquiesce to your request," he said in a bored, droll tone. "We do not jump at your call." Truth be told, he didn't answer to anyone's orders but his father's, and that was out of necessity. Requests he might listen to, naturally, but orders? No.
