Silence was golden as they said - the world had been utterly silent for the last few weeks and Equinox was not about to tempt the fates by expressing this or her appreciation for it. No, she knew much better than that. After all, the moment in which a soquili so much as uttered words that might tempt the fates, the spirits embraced the challenge and unceremoniously deposited unnecessary drama and headache worthy encounters on the lap of said soquili. She wished to avoid this and as a consequence she said nothing and merely savoured the moment.
Admittedly, she hadn't given much thought to the fact that musing over such tranquility was also deemed to be a direct challenge. The spirits had ways and means of reading the thoughts of mortals - at some point it was going to come back to bite her on the rear. Alas, she hadn't really given that little tidbid of knowledge much consideration!
Instead, she limped along and made her way to the lake where she might deposit herself comfortably on the shore. The heat of the morning sun was already causing the temperature to climb around her and she knew that by noon the open plains and the crystal clear waters of the lake would prove to be an ideal basking spot. It was to be the perfect day, she had no further plans this morning as her 'duties' elsewhere had been completed and she was going to take the chance to relax. Given she didn't often relax this was a rarity and one she wasn't going to give up without a fight.
Ah, but how little she knew for the fates were already conspiring against her.
Unaware of the impish spirits and their intentions, she wandered obliviously towards the lakes. Head bowed and ears swivelling here and there as she listened to the various sounds that often came with a rising sun - that would be the yawns, bleary mumbles and cracking limbs of nearby stretching animals then. Still, it was a peaceful sort of soundtrack to the morning, she couldn't complain about that.

Part of the silence Equinox had enjoyed was intentional on the part of the stallion who was soon to break it. He'd been thinking, hard, about how he could spend time with the mare without being poked full of verbal needles. He, admittedly, wasn't the brightest apple on the tree, but he wasn't that stupid! He just didn't think as fast as smart mares like Nox.
And he'd guessed wrong in looking for her for the past week or so. Yes, he was ready to try his luck again, and hopefully today he'd actually find the blue mare.
Today was starting very early for Calor, who'd determined that if he started looking at dawn, he had an entire day in which to try to find Nox. It was just his luck that, on one of the trails approaching the lake, he managed to spot a familiar blue form.
"Good morning, Equinox!" the stallion called out, unable to restrain his happiness at having managed to locate her so very early in the day. In case she hadn't heard him, a bunch of the nearby birds twittered at him in annoyance for interrupting their morning calls before launching themselves to go find breakfast somewhere far away from the noisy Soquili.

Well slap her arse and call her Charlie, the spirits were up bright and early this morning to serve her a very nutritious breakfast. Said breakfast came in the form of an individual who she had been fairly certain she had run off. Alas, the masochist had returned and with him he brought that painful cheeriness that just didn't seem to fit in with the bleary eyes and groggy minds that the dawn brought. She did have to appreciate that the birds had echoed those sentiments on her behalf but this still didn't stop her from wincing and firing her gaze skywards.
"Ah ha ha," she murmured and then took a breath, "Ah ha ha ha," she added in what could only be accepted as a sarcastic drawl. It was no doubt a direct provocation towards the spirits but really, what else could they throw at her today? If they elected to throw in a proposal, a declaration of love or anything else completely and utterly beyond 'sanity' then she would perform a world exclusive, equine tap dance.
Scratch that - this was the peacock and she had no idea what beak brain could come up with. He was, by all definitions, unique.
Nevertheless, she should have been applauded for her performance as she lowered her gaze and turned it in his direction. He was obviously rather proud of himself, she couldn't even fathom why he was so chirpy for this time in the morning but she dare not ask. Maybe he'd won a beauty pageant or learnt of a new way to polish his nose.
"Good morning, Calor," she replied in a relatively relaxed manner, a testament to her patience at this moment in time. "Fancy seeing you here..."

The stallion's eyes brightened as Equinox actually responded to his greeting. She'd spoken to him! Civilly! Without trying to rip him to shreds using only words! Admittedly, he wasn't so obtuse that he wasn't picking up on the sarcasm, but it wasn't a direct insult! Not yet!
This looking for the mare early in the day had obviously been one of his best ideas to date.
He had a couple of choices now. He could try to make idle conversation - a surefire way to open himself up to the blue mare's insults and snide remarks - or he could try to play it her way. The latter was much harder, but he'd managed it before, for short periods of time. Maybe today would be his lucky day.
"I love spring mornings," he admitted to her. "The gradual warmth, the bright green of new leaves, it's a time of hope and new beginnings." Prudently, he refused to admit to himself that he'd like 'Nox to give him a "new beginning" that didn't involve being called a turkey. He would persevere, and make the best of the relationship he had with her! He was here and he wasn't going to leave!
She might threaten him and insult him but he genuinely liked her. And that might be the scariest thing for her, if she ever realized it.

Oh dear, had she said the wrong thing? She didn't like the twinkle in his eyes as she greeted him. There was something about him that resembled a happy puppy in those moments and she mentally kicked herself for providing him with any form of encouragement. Now she was never going to get rid of him, the masochist would latch on to anything that seemed to indicate there was light at the end of the tunnel - charming and perhaps fascinating to some mares, but she couldn't help but wonder if it was going to lead to an entirely new brand of headaches for her. Alas, there was no use in questioning it, the fates had deposited him in her lap and she was going to have to deal with him.
Roll with the punches...as they said.
She was doing that a lot lately.
"Is that so?" she replied finally, her tone neither hostile or inviting. It might have been safe to say she was inviting him to continue and she really was... As of yet he hadn't really given her a reason to tell him to go away, nor did she have any ammunition against him. Granted, he still inspired that overwhelming sense of 'dread' in her mind but for the time being he hadn't done anything that was liable to provoke her. A step in the right direction for him, he could feel elated at that if he so wished.
"It also brings a great many slumbering beasts out of their beds," she pointed out mildly. Well, he couldn't really expect her to not dampen the proceedings somehow, could he?

It probably wasn't meant to be as encouraging as it sounded, but that was just fine with Calor. It meant he'd passed round one of the challenge, but there were an unknown and uncountable number left. The slightest mistake and he'd have to go back to the beginning when he next managed to track her down.
He really enjoyed the way she insisted on looking at the downside of everything. Sometimes he knew he got carried away looking at the ups and she could really ground him. That would be an advantage if he could convince her to take this would-be relationship further...
The stallion reminded himself to not go too fast. Equinox would be all over him if he gave her an opening like that.
"Yes, they all return, like the sun after midwinter brings life back to the lands," he replied at last. If she was going to insist on pointing out how dark the tunnel was, the least he could do was show her that there was indeed light at the end!

"And with them bring death, destruction and terror," she continued wrily, countering his intentions to be optimistic. It wasn't that she couldn't be optimistic herself, on occasions she could look at the bright side of life too, but this stallion just seemed to be permanently bubbly. It was inexplicable, but every time he appeared she had the sudden urge to pop that bubble, again, and again, and again. She was like a bratty child in that respect, particularly given that it gave her a level of satisfaction that she found difficult to achieve elsewhere.
...Yes, she appeared to get her kicks out of taking the candy out of Calor's pram. From an outsider's point of view it was perhaps, one of the most bizarre forms of courtship. Even from a platonic point of view, the pursuit seemed to be entirely one sided at first glance. However, if one were to look deeper into the psyche of the more hostile individual, it would quickly become apparent that they seemed to feed off the attention!
She would, of course, deny all knowledge of this.
However she did have one thing to add to her initial remarks. "But good gods, Beaky -" she paused and shook her head. "Have you found a new calling in life, gone is the dandy, only to be replaced by the poet?"

The stallion snorted his amusement at Equinox's predictably pessimistic response. She truly was a clever creature and had a turn of phrase that set her above all the other mares he'd encountered in his life. Maybe he really was masochistic, to keep trying to win her over, but he couldn't help it. She really was an amazing mare. Besides, he rather thought she enjoyed these exchanges to a degree, however small it might be.
His musing was interrupted as she continued speaking and one thing caused him to put his ears back in surprise. Beaky? She was calling him Beaky? He didn't think that was any better than "Turkey." But...if he reacted to it, he'd just be opening himself up for her to rip him apart. Again. So the best course of action was to just ignore it.
"Perhaps," he replied. "But calling me a dandy or a poet doesn't make me either." Calor thought for a minute. "I could call you a spinster, or even a harridan, but that wouldn't make either true." No way in hell would he actually consider the blue mare a harridan (spinster, maybe), but he was a little short on less-than-flattering things to call her.

She was momentarily surprised by the fact that he hadn't risen to her nicknames, previously the name 'Turkey' had riled him up quite easily. It was a bizarre change to be sure and the mare did have to question if she was in the presence of a twin, or, if the stallion had been subject to some sort of personality transplant. She was fairly certain that it hadn't been all of that long since she had last seen him and such a dramatic shift was simply unheard of - either he had been encouraging her to underestimate him or he was secretly a genius and her verbal abuse and jousting had finally brought it to life.
...Should she take that as a compliment?
Best not to dwell on it.
"You would be accurate if you used both words to describe me," she replied with considerable ease, her eyebrows lifting at his choice of words. She'd been called a harridan a few times, usually while she was putting others in their place and 'spinster' was a role she had accepted a long time ago. She had never anticipated that she would find romance (that was more of her sister's department) and as such, it was obvious that she would go passed her prime. Her siblings would be comfortably mated with a squillion little children and she would... Well, she would watch from afar - had things been different then she would have been the 'cool aunt'.
"Therefore you might wish to select an alternative means of describing me, otherwise your point will be null and void," she advised him mildly.

Calor winced inwardly. He hadn't meant to pick words that others had applied to Nox already, and such cruel ones! Well, maybe spinster wasn't so bad, but still! He didn't like to think of her as a spinster, especially since he was sure that she was somewhere around his own age. Maybe even younger! Gods, if she was a spinster, what did that make him?
"All right, I could call you a witch, or a grandmother, or...or even a Skinwalker! But you're clearly none of the above," he wasn't so proud of those choices, since two of them, at least, were obviously inaccurate. But a witch, well, that depended on your definition. Maybe she was one and had cast a spell on him - why else would he be so intent on pursuing her?
Though that didn't work if one considered how frequently she wished him elsewhere. He was proud, however, of managing to overlook "Beaky."
