Ambling out into the sandy lands of her home, Subarenae wasn't sure whether to sulk or be elated. She'd been evicted once again during one of mothers frantic "make sure the walls aren't falling down" tests, and sent off to play by herself. Dragged up from a nap in the cool and bundled on her way half asleep, she was still drowsy and annoyed, but her mood perked up quickly as she roamed free in the sun. It was so warm and nice out. She wasn't usually allowed to wander alone, except during den-safety tests, when mother was too distracted to mind. Best to take advantage of the opportunity.

Scuffing the sand under her feet, she wriggled to leave a trench behind her, and examined its shape curiously. Then she tried wiggling along on her belly with minimal foot effort, and checked that trail too. Not quite like the snake trail she'd intended, but different. She preoccupied herself with trying to leave all sorts of different marks on the ground and traced a path far across the pride, until finally she noticed how far she'd come.

Suddenly nervous, she peeked around for signs of dens. Some males weren't always nice to female cubs, mama said, especially if those cubs didn't know their manners. Wasn't she not supposed to be wandering alone? She huddled timidly, watching for strangers, and then started digging, having decided to bury herself in the sand to hide.

User ImageTo Borealis it seemed like he had been in this pride for years not when in reality it has only been a few months or so. Still way too long in his estimation but Achal was the best thing Ali had found as a lead to find his sister. As each day passed Ali felt restlessness settle deeper in his bones. When he first met Achal, the large mountain marked lion, the serval saw the end of his quest near but it seemed that his life was just placed on hold. He did not believe the large lion lied to him about his adopted daughter who sounded very much like Ali's lost twin. Achal had too much pride and honor to do something like that, he said he needed time to settle things here at his home before going to search for his daughter, Ali's sister. Ali understood this but it still bothered him that each time it seems they could leave something else arose keeping the lion tethered to the pride.

Even with Achal and his family's protection Ali still moved around the pride with caution unless with a known family member so when he came upon a young cub digging in the ground he remained quite as he tried to understand the situation. Why was this cub digging? Was she looking for something? Was she playing? Why was she alone?

Since he would get no answers without asking the questions, so with a safe distance between them Ali cleared his throat and said clearly and yet softly, "Good morning."

Suba squeaked in surprise at the sudden voice, and crouched down in the hole she'd just made, rapidly cover herself with a thin film of dust. Then she held very still, barely daring to breathe, hoping whoever it was hadn't actually spotted her. She always felt safer buried in the warm sand like this, as if it could protect her against anything if she just stayed still.

Her cub impatience won out though, and she peeked up after only a few seconds, to see if the attacker had gone. Instead she was confronted with a view of a small black feline, where she'd expected a much larger one. Wiggling her head out of the hole, she blinked in confusion, and sized him up carefully. "...Good morning?" she answered at long last, and pulled herself free of the sand, shaking it off with a tremor while she eyed the strange creature curiously. Was he a cub? He was an odd shape for a cub.

Though he seemed too small to be a threat, she bobbed a small curtsy politely. Mama said even cub males should be treated respectfully, or their parents might get mad. The shimmy of sand that fell off her from the motion ruined the effect, though.

Borealis smothered a laugh when the cub emerged from her hole draped in dirt. He returned her bow with a head nod, a bow would have just looked silly this he knew from experience. Instead a wide and friendly smile on his face as he introduced himself, "I am Borealis. Currently I am visiting," Ali didnt really know how else to call his stay with Achal, "and staying with Pad Achal and his family."

Ali was glad of the time he spent talking with Achal or Tsubame about the pride rules, he knew that this young cub was a Banu and in theory should not have been left alone as she was, then again cubs would be cubs and wandering off was part of growing up. Still, caution was always best so Ali glanced around before saying, "Shouldn't your mother, or brother, or pad be with you young Banu?"

Suba perked up at the name... not the serval's, but the other one. "Pad Achal's my great grandfather!" she announced, pleased. She'd never met the mysterious relative, being so young, but she'd been told about him. "He's my father's grandfather. I'm Subarenae, daughter of Pad Rasul." she dipped another curtsy out of habit.

Her sudden eagerness faded at the faint reprimand, and she tucked one paw behind the other in a sheepish gesture. "Mother's digging and father's... studying," she explained. "They're very busy." They were always busy it seemed, working on their crafts. Mama digging incessantly, collecting the odd stones she found, and papa... eating lizards and catching birds, she didn't quite understand his work. Something to do with better understanding the world. "And my only brother is watching some of my sisters, so I was sent out to 'keep myself entertained'."

It didn't really bother her, if she stopped to think about it. She was usually happiest alone, free to mess around in the sand as she pleased. She got plenty of attention when her parents decided to teach their crafts to the cubs. She shook her head to clear up her thoughts. "I'm not bothering you, am I? I can dig somewhere else."

Borealis was surprised. This young female was a great-granddaughter to his friend. He knew that Achal had a large family and even that one of his daughters had a family of her own but to know that one of those offspring had cubs was a something that Borealis was a bit in awe over. To have your blood flourish in such a way was quite a feet. The serval had never met anyone who was a grand anything let alone a great-grand. "It is a honer to meet you Banu Subarenae, daughter of Pad Rasul." Ali smiled and laughed softly in a kind way.

"Ahh I guess that makes sense although I would think at least having someone to play with would be better then just playing with yourself." Again Ali glanced around the empty clearing. Sometimes the pride seemed so bursting with life that to find a spot of solitude was rare and for that spot to remain quite was even rarer so he did expect someone to end up stumbling upon them sooner rather then later. But at least now if someone did show up Ali could honestly say that he knew this young banu. He looked back at Subarenae when she asked her question and quickly replayed, "You arn't bothering me but if I may ask, why are you digging a hole?"
