Vic followed Lizzy through the gate and onto the grounds of the pokémon gym. The entrance of the building faced the ocean, and the golden sand from the beach all but reached the door. Down near the water's edge, a good fifty yards away, there was a crouched figure watching the gentle waves creep toward her toes, getting closer with every try.
"That's probably her. She said she'd wait outside the gym for an hour. I guess she's more stubborn than I thought," Vic said.
"She doesn't look stubborn to me! She looks pretty. Let's go say hi," Lizzy said, skipping away. Vic sighed and followed, onto the sand and down toward the ocean.
"I knew you'd come," Millie said. "That's why I waited. Didn't want to get started 'til you arrived. It'd be a crime if you missed even a second of my battle."
"Sure," Vic nodded. "This is Lizzy. She insisted we come."
Millie looked at Lizzy and frowned. "Where'd you come from? Sneaky one, aren't ya?"
"Leave her alone. Are we doing this or what?" Vic complained.
"All right, all right, keep your jacket on, Greenie," Millie replied. She scowled at Vic, then started up the beach, toward the gym.
"It's Vic."
"Good for you," Millie laughed.

The door into the gym automatically opened and Millie led the way inside, surveying the shiny, metal battlefield and looking around for Lt. Surge.
"Surge? I challenge you to a battle for the Thunder Badge!" Millie shouted.
She was sure loud enough. Her voice echoed around the hall, but even by the time the echo had died there had been no reply. It almost seemed as though there was no-one home.
Then a loudspeaker sounded a booming voice: "I accept!"
As Vic looked around for the source of the voice another sliding door opened, on the opposite side of the room. A tall, wide man stepped through into the hall and placed his hands on his hips. Vic nudged Lizzy. "I guess that's him."
"How many pokémon do you have?" Surge asked, his voice just as booming in person as it was over the PA system.
"Four. Let's make it four on four," Millie replied.
Surge nodded. "Excellent idea. Your recruits can sit in the stand. Now take your position, girlie. Let's get this show on the road!"

"Watch and learn," Millie said back to Vic. She tossed a pokéball up and down in her hand, once, twice, three times. Then she threw it out into the field, shouting in anger "Go Barboach!"
A wormy little fish came out of the pokéball and splatted onto the ground. It lifted the forward part of its body and snarled at the giant man at the opposite end of the field.
"Hmph! I choose... Emolga," Surge said. He threw his pokéball forward and, in a flash, a cute little black, white and yellow pokémon appeared, curled up in a ball.
"Aww," Lizzy cooed. "It's so~o~o~o cu~u~ute."
"Hmph! You'll see. Emolga, ten-hut!" Surge ordered.
His pokémon jumped up to attention, even saluting. "Emoh!"
"Awwwww~ Loo~oo~ook at it, Vic!" Lizzy cooed again, tugging her brother's sleeve.
"Emolga, use light screen," Surge ordered.
"Barboach, now's your chance to use dragon dance," Millie said.
As Emolga let out a pink-purple flash, Barboach wiggled around ferociously. ...Well, it wiggled around. Ferocious didn't really come into it.
"Now Emolga, U-turn!" Surge called.
With Barboach still wiggling around, Emolga leaped up, spread its little arms and glided through the air. It smashed into Barboach, then pulled up into a loop-the-loop.
"Barboach, ice beam while it's close!" Millie ordered. Her pokémon lifted its head back, forming a ball of intense cold in its mouth, and then Emolga disappeared into its pokéball. Millie's expression dropped. "Wha!?"
"Go Luxray," Surge called. He threw out his next pokéball and a vicious pokémon appeared in Emolga's place. It snarled at Millie's barboach, and the fishy pokémon recoiled in fear, releasing the ice beam all askew.
The shot of cold barely grazed the side of Luxray's face as it subtly tilted out of its way. "Lu~u~ux..."
Millie was quick to react. "Hang in there Barboach! Use earthquake!"
"Bar~boach!" her pokémon replied. It leaped up into the air, then corkscrewed itself to build up speed, before smashing into the ground for devastating damage.
Luxray had to steady itself as the vibrations travelled up its legs and disrupted the flow of electricity around its body.
Vic found himself leaning forward. The battle might actually be closer than he'd first thought. In fact, he thought he might even learn something from watching.

"Luxray, flash," Surge ordered.
"Lu~u~uxray!" the pokémon barked. A bright flash emanated from it and dazzled Barboach. Even Millie turned away with a hand over her eyes.
"Urgh! Barboach, you have to stop it. Use earth power!"
"Bar~" Barboach said. Then, just as before, it leaped up, corkscrewed, and then smashed into the ground. This time it glowed yellow, and as it hit, the ground started to crack. The cracks spread rapidly, straight toward Luxray.
"Luxray, jump," Surge ordered. The pokémon leaped up into the air, then the ground beneath it erupted. Chunks of earth and rock flew up and hit Luxray's belly, knocking it left and right.
"Lux!" the pokémon cried. It crashed to the ground and rolled over, springing back up to its feet but breathing heavily.
"Crunch," Surge ordered. Luxray immediately charged forwards, mouth gaping and teeth gleaning in the light.
"Barboach, wait for it to get close and then earthquake!" Millie shouted.
"Ba~a~arboach!" the pokémon called. It leaped up and then crash!

Luxray collapsed to its side. Barboach had won.
"Wow, that's a strong fishy!" Lizzy said.
Vic nodded to her. "I'm beginning to think it was a good idea to come here. My spirits are lifted already."
"Ha. Call yourself a gym leader?" Millie scoffed at Surge.
"I'll teach you to control that tongue," the man replied. "Go Manectric."
Luxray was returned and replaced by a blue and yellow pokémon that you could tell was an electric type just from looking. "Man~e~ectric!"
"Hidden power," Surge said.
"Man~eh!" the pokémon barked. A circle of glowing orbs appeared around it, then fired out at Barboach with incredible speed. They smashed into the water-type and knocked it away.
"Bar?" the pokémon whimpered. Then it flopped down, fainted.
Surge laughed. "You were saying Little Miss?"
Millie snarled. "Barboach, return. Go Misdreavus!"

"Hmph. Electro ball,"
Surge ordered.
Manectric immediately formed a ball of fizzing light in hits mouth, then fired it straight at Misdreavus. It hit hard enough to visibly affect Millie's pokémon, but there was still plenty of fight left in it.
"Misdreavus, imprison," Millie said. Her pokémon was enveloped in a sort of pink forcefield, which then flickered off and reappeared around Manectric, as though it had teleported across the battlefield.
"Man~eh?"
"Try to get out of that one," Millie snickered.
"Too easy. Manectric, flamethrower," Surge replied. His pokémon bared its teeth, took a deep breath, then let out a ferocious breath of fire.
The flames blasted toward Misdreavus and smothered it, burning its very core.
"Misdreavus~" the ghost-type wailed.
"Damnit! Misdreavus, use thunder wave," Millie ordered.
Misdreavus disappeared, then reappeared behind Manectric. It touched it on the back of the electric type's head and a static charge transferred, intermittently causing paralysis.
"Now Misdreavus, get away from it, then use shadow ball."
"Manectric, charge while you're immobilised. The second you can move use electro ball," Surge responded.
Misdreavus reappeared a few feet from Millie and formed a big ball of dark energy. Meanwhile, Manectric was charging itself up, increasing its special defence and getting ready for a big attack.
"Now! Fire it!" Millie screeched. "Follow it up with a thunderbolt!"
Surge laughed. He could probably tell that Millie was panicking. She knew she had to take down Manectric while it was paralysed.
The shadow ball hit the immobile pokémon and the thunderbolt was right behind it. For all their power, though, Manectric stayed standing through the both.
"Our turn," Surge said. "Fire at will!"
Manectric formed a massive ball of electricity, twice the size of the previous one, and fired it at Misdreavus.

"Mis..." the ghost-type murmured. Then it dropped to the floor, unconscious.

"Misdreavus, return," Millie sighed. "Alright, so you're not half bad. Time to step it up a gear. Go Trapinch! Dig straight away!"
Once Misdreavus had returned, a small, orange thing came out of its pokéball. It looked like a big and fat ant or something, with a massively-overgrown head.
"Good tactics," Vic muttered to himself. The trapinch burrowed its way underground, out of Manectric's sight.
"Manectric, hidden power. Straight down the hole," Surge said.
Vic's eyes widened. Straight down the hole? Just as he suspected, Manectric fired off its glowing orbs and they all swooped up into the air, then flew straight down the hole that Trapinch had dug.
"Traaa~"
"No! Trapinch!" Millie cried. "Trapinch?"
Surge laughed. "It's gone. Manectric, charge, ready for her next pokémon..."
"Trapinch... trah!" The ground beneath Manectric blasted outwards as Trapinch dug upwards. The little bug-like thing knocked the big electric-type away.
"Man~eh~"
"Gah! Good show Trapinch! You've got spunk," Surge said. "Manectric, you're relieved. Emolga, get back in there with an aerial ace."
Emolga returned to the battlefield, immediately swooping down through the air and smashing straight through Trapinch's defences. The cute little cherub knocked the snappy, orangey thing back to its trainers feet, where it slumped, fainted.
"Three down. One to go. What'll it be? Surrender, or outright defeat?"
"Neither," Millie snarled. "Go Sneasel! Swords dance!"
Trapinch was returned, and in its place a sneasel took to the field. It looked mean. Angry. Dangerous.
"Sneasel!" it cried. On Millie's order it quickly ran its long claws against each other, sharpening them with a shink, shink, shink. "Sneasel!"
"Volt switch," Surge ordered.
"Emoh!" his pokémon replied. Just like earlier in the battle, it jumped up and swooped forwards. This time it visibly and audibly sparked, and as it hit Sneasel and pulled up into its loop-the-loop a shot of electricity flew through the air. Vic watched as Sneasel quivered and fell to a knee. Then when he looked over to Lt. Surge's side of the field, he saw that Emolga had returned to its pokéball again.
"Time for the big push," Surge said. "Raichu. Move up."

Surge's final pokéball pinged.
"Raaaai~chaaaaaaaaaaouuuuuuu!"
The pokémon was magnificent. It stood tall, proud, powerful. It swished its tail around, making whipping sounds with each rapid movement.
"Raichu, body slam," Surge ordered.
"Raaaaaaaaaaiiiii~" the pokémon responded. It charged forwards. It spread its arms, then leaped up into the air.
"Uh-- Sneasel, use, uh-- Dig! Dig now!"
Sneasel dug into the ground as quickly as it could. Dust kicked up and shrouded the area. Then there was a thud, as Raichu's body slam hit.
"What happened? What happened Vic?" Lizzy pressed.
"I can't see," Vic replied. He leaned forward, urging the dust to clear.
"Rai?"
"Raichu, jump!" Surge shouted. But it was too late. Sneasel broke up through the arena floor and threw Raichu away.
"Sneaaaaa~sel!
"Rai~ai~ai..." Surge's pokémon cried. Then it smashed into the ground. "...Chuuuuuuu..."
"Haha! Go Sneasel! Now you've only got one pokémon left too, and it's weak to ice. You underestimated me, Surge!" Millie cackled.
"Emolga, aerial ace," Surge said.
"Emoh~"
"Wait! What!?"
Emolga smashed into Sneasel head-on and knocked it down. The ice-type didn't even try to dodge.
Surge held out his pokéball. "Emolga, you fought well. Now return."
"What!?" Millie blurted.
"You need to learn to concentrate, Little Miss. Your sneasel was paralysed on contact with my raichu. That was all the opening I needed to finish you off. You were too busy gloating to notice your pokémon was in trouble. You put your own pride ahead of your pokémon's wellbeing."
"I did not!"
"Yes you did!" Surge shouted. "I am here to test you. I am here to tell you when you get things wrong, and you Little Miss got things terribly, terribly wrong. I suggest you listen to me when I appraise your tactics, listen to me when I put you down and listen to me when I give you advice. If I even feel like giving you advice, after such insubordination. Do I make myself clear!?"
Millie returned her sneasel to its pokéball, then turned and walked away. Her head was bowed, but unless Vic was mistaken, there were tears in her eyes.

Vic half bowed to Lt. Surge, then made his way out of the gym, looking for Millie. Seemed as though she'd gone straight down to the waterside. She'd obviously taken what Surge said pretty hard. And although he probably was a little harsh on her, he was right--she was celebrating a win before she'd even achieved it, and that was woeful behaviour for a pokémon trainer. "Lizzy, why don't you wait here? I'll be back soon," Vic said.
"Okay. Leave Shuckle for me to talk to?" Lizzy asked.
Vic nodded and handed over the pokéball, then started down the beach, trying to think of what to say.

"So," Vic said.
"Oh leave it out. I don't need you lecturing me too," Millie growled back.
"I wasn't going to lecture you. I just wanted to see you were okay," Vic replied.
"'Okay'? 'Okay'? Did you even see what happened in there?"
Vic bowed his head, so that he didn't have to put up with Millie's stony gaze. "I think--"
"He totally cheated me!" Millie exclaimed.
Vic leaned back a little. He scratched his head. "Uh...?"
"That flying rat isn't an electric type. I'm gonna phone the League and complain," Millie said.
"But," Vic started, trying to figure out how best to word, to keep Millie from throwing it back in his face. "Emolga is an electric type."
Millie grumbled. She sat down on the sand, with her feet reaching down toward the water. Vic half thought he should sit with her, but he hardly knew her. It would probably be a bit weird.
"Sabrina was tough, but I managed to take her out with Misdreavus. Imprison locked down most of her pokémon's moves, so she was helpless," Millie said. Then she shrugged a little. "Mostly helpless. That battle went down to one pokémon each too, and I just nipped it, thanks to pain split."
Vic listened intently, but couldn't think of anything to say.
"This is probably all going way over your head. Amateur like you. Bet you don't know what pain split does," Millie chuckled.
Vic folded his arms and looked out to sea. He wanted to give her the official definition, which he'd learned in pokémon school, but he figured raining on her already-trashed parade wouldn't be a very nice thing to do.
"How old're you, anyway?" Millie asked.
Vic sighed. "Nineteen. You?"
"Nineteen. Practically, anyway. I will be in two months," Mille said. "Been on the road since I was sixteen. Went through the Hoenn league with Blaziken, Dustox, Swellow, Whiscash, Banette and Hariyama. Then I went through the Johto league with Meganium, Noctowl, Ariados, Donphan, Magcargo and Lanturn. Turned out my Whiscash laid an egg while I was in Johto, so my parents transferred it to me, along with my Trapinch. I caught Misdreavus and Sneasel before I left Johto for Kanto. Did some training with Barboach in Cerulean, then went back to Saffron and demolished Sabrina. Then I came here. I've been through so much with my pokémon. I don't need any muscle-bound yeti telling me what to do."
Vic supposed it must be annoying to go through so much and still be talked to like an amateur. But Surge did have a point--Millie had focussed more on her own pride than on her pokémon's wellbeing. Maybe she was just used to her whiscash being able to take hits like that, and overestimated her barboach. The same point applied though. "Maybe there's a little complacency sneaking into your game?"
"Ha!" Millie scoffed. Then she calmed again and sighed. "Yeah. Maybe."
Vic contemplated his own future as a pokémon trainer, and whether he'd ever get big-headed like that. He liked to think not. He liked to think he'd always keep his feet on the ground.
Millie looked back to the gym and saw Lizzy sat on the bottom step, talking to Shuckle, who was happy on the warm sand. "What's the deal with you and the munchkin anyway?"

Vic didn't want to talk about his past. "That's my little sister Lizzy. We're going out to route eleven, to train up the gligar we just caught. Maybe you could join us after you've been to the pokémon centre to get your pokémon healed up?"
"Hmph. I guess I could teach you a thing or two. Since you seem so desperate," Millie said. She stood up and kicked some wet sand off her shoes, then turned and started to walk away.
"Don't have to put yourself out," Vic groaned.
Millie glanced back, smugness pasted on her face. "No, it's fine. I'm a very charitable person."

Once Millie had left the grounds of the gym, Vic went and got Lizzy and Shuckle from the steps outside the building. "She's going to meet us on route eleven, I think. What do you say we go and find a good spot?"

The door into the gym automatically opened, but Vic didn't walk inside straight away. He stood at the entrance, looking in at the battlefield. Then he crouched down in front of Lizzy. "You sure you're okay?"
Lizzy nodded, unconvincingly, but Vic didn't want to pressure her. They could talk better once they were on their own again.
"Come on already," Millie insisted. "She'll be fine. She's a big girl."
Vic sighed a little. "Are you coming inside?"
"Can I stay out here?" Lizzy asked. "I'd rather play on the beach than watch pokémon battle."
"Hmm. Okay. But don't go in the water. I'll be checking your socks when I'm finished, to make sure they're not wet," Vic said.
Lizzy giggled. "Okay. I'll build castles up here instead."
Vic stroked her head, then turned back to the open doors of the gym and walked inside.

"Lieutenant Surge, my name's Vic Angelo and I'm from Icirrus City, Unova. I've come here to challenge you," Vic called out. He remembered when Millie challenged the gym she'd been all cocky about it. The reply came to her over a loudspeaker, blunt as her proposal. He fully expected the same again, but to his surprise, a door opened on the far side of the room and Lt. Surge came out onto the battlefield.
"Angelo? From Icirrus City? You've put up a lot of miles to get here."
"Yes, Sir. I felt like a change of scenery," Vic replied.
"How many badges do you have, Angelo?"
"None, Sir," Vic said.
Surge seemed a little confused. He took off his sunglasses. "And is this your first attempt at getting one?"
"Yes, Sir. I was set a challenge and I accepted," Vic replied.
Surge looked to Millie, who'd already walked over to the stands and sat down, with her feet up on the seat in front of her. "I see. How many pokémon do you have, Angelo?"
"Four."
"Shall we make this a four-on-four?" Surge asked. He put his sunglasses back on and took a pokéball from his belt. It looked as though he'd already decided who he was going to start with. Vic wasn't even sure how many pokémon he wanted to use. He'd only battled with Trapinch and Gligar once apiece. But then, they were both good against electric attacks.
"Okay. I'll take that," Vic agreed. He took his first pokéball from his belt - Gastly's - and walked over to his spot, at the opposite end of the battlefield to Surge.
"Good. That's the way I like it. I choose... Galvantula!"

"My first pokémon will be Gastly," Vic said. He threw the pokéball up and it popped open. A second later Gastly faded in from the nothingness.
"Gaaah~" she wailed.
"Good," Surge said. "Galvantula, use thunderbolt!"
"Gastly, dodge it. Sneak in and use hypnosis," Vic ordered. Gastly disappeared and the thunderbolt from Galvantula hit the metal floor with a buzz and a spark.
"Try to sense it, Galvantula, then let off another thunderbolt!"
Vic watched intently as Gastly appeared behind the big, yellow spider and let off a ghostly, hypnotic wave.
Galvantula's eight legs wobbled for a moment, then it collapsed to the floor, fast asleep.
"Good work Gastly. Now dream eater," Vic ordered. He wanted to get the first hit in, just to help his and Gastly's confidence.
"Gaaah~" Gastly murmured. She glowed pink and absorbed some of Galvantula's energy.
"Follow it up with a confuse ray," Vic said.
Gastly let off the attack just as Galvantula woke up. "Galvaaa~antula?"
"Galvantula, thunderbolt," Surge ordered. His pokémon was already confused when it got the order, but Gastly was so close the attack would never miss. Gastly cringed as the electric bolt hit her and fizzed around her gaseous form.
"Gastly, attract!" Vic shouted.
Gastly pulled a sorry expression up, then pouted at Galvantula.
"Ha! Your gastly's a girl?" Millie called from the stands.
Vic ignored her. "That's it Gastly, keep it up!"
"Tula~? Galvantula?"
"Gastly~" Vic's pokémon replied.
"Galvantula, don't fall for it. Hit it with another thunderbolt," Surge ordered. His pokémon was swooning, though. Gastly's alluring expressions had sucked it in.
"Now hypnosis again," Vic called.
Gastly tried to send off more hypnotic rays, but they missed. Thankfully Galvantula wasn't going to let off any attacks, and even if it did it was just as likely to hit itself as it was to hit its opponent.
"Back to your senses, Galvantula!" Surge demanded. "On your feet!"
"One more time, Gastly," Vic ordered. This time Gastly's hypnosis hit the electric spider and sent it back off to sleep.

"Wake up, Galvantula!"
Surge shouted, but his electric pokémon was spark out.
"Dream eater, one last time," Vic said. He leaned forward as Gastly sucked the remaining energy out of Galvantula. The electric type shuddered as the last drops left its body, then collapsed to the ground, exhausted.
"Hrm. Well done, Angelo. Excellent tactics. Let's see if you can keep it up," Surge said. He returned his galvantula and sent out an ampharos in its place. The moment it was out the electric pokémon started doing a funky little dance, swinging its tail left and right and moving its arms around in circles.
Vic didn't like the looks of it. "Careful, Gastly."
"Gah?" Gastly frowned, watching the dancing ampharos.
"Better use hypnosis from the off," Vic said.
Gastly let off another blast of hypnotic waves, but they must've missed the ampharos because it didn't stop its strange dance.
"Could it be?" Vic wondered. He put his hand out to feel the air, and just as he suspected, a raindrop hit his palm. "It's rain dance, Gastly! You've got to put it to sleep now!"
"Gastly," the pokémon nodded. She concentrated hard and fired some more hypnotic waves at the ampharos. Thankfully this time they were effective--the tall electric type slowed its dance, swayed left and right, and then finally flopped forward onto the floor.
"Excellent, Gastly. Now use dream eater," Vic said. The rain started to come down in a torrent, pattering against the ground and running off the field, into purpose-built drains.
Gastly was unaffected by it - the drops passed straight through her body - and she successfully sucked some of ampharos' energy out. But Vic knew that Surge must have trained his ampharos to use the move for a reason.
"Ah?" the ampharos muttered. It was waking up already.
"Gastly, confuse ray," Vic ordered. The ampharos shook off its drowsiness and jumped up to its feet. It towered over Gastly. "Gastly! Do it now!"
Surge's holler came right after Vic's: "bring on the thunder!"
"Gah!" Gastly panicked. Then, boom. A metre-thick bolt of electricity came down from the clouds and smashed into Gastly's body. There was absolutely no way she could have taken the hit.
"Gastly, return," Vic said. He held out her pokéball and she vanished inside with a red flash. "You did really well. Leave the rest to the others."
"Your move, Angelo," Surge called over the sound of the rain.
Vic picked the next pokéball from his pocket and tossed it up in the air for the pokémon to come out. "Go, Trapinch."
"Traaaa~"
"Ampharos, outrage!" Surge shouted. His pokémon's demeanour went from calm to furious in an instant.
"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhmpharos!" it roared.

Ampharos glowed a strange orange colour, then roared again, releasing a dozen glowing orange orbs from its body. They fired at Trapinch at an astonishing speed and smashed into her with amazing power.
"Tra~"
Vic looked at his pokémon and blinked a couple of times. She'd survied the attack. "You did it! Trapinch, dig now!"
"Traaaa~" Trapinch said. Then in a cloud of dust, she smashed through the metal floor of the battlefield and disappeared underground.
"Aha. That's some Trapinch, Angelo," Surge said.
"I can't take credit for that," Vic smirked. "But I can take credit for the orders I give it. Trapinch, break out now!"
"Ahhhhhhhhmp!" Ampharos roared. Trapinch smashed up through the metal floor again, right beneath the electric type, and knocked it off its feet. It smashed to the ground and its electric charge was disrupted. That was all it took to wipe it out.
"All right. Great work, Trapinch. Get back over here, ready for the next opponent," Vic ordered. Thankfully the rain was starting to die down, so Shuckle wouldn't have to worry about any thunder attacks, if he was needed. With Trapinch's immunity to electric attacks though, she might be able to fight through to the end.
"Impressive. But let's see how you handle something a little different," Surge smiled. He returned his ampharos, then tossed his third pokéball out. "Go, Lanturn!"
"Lanturn?" Vic blurted. The water pokémon appeared in a flash, and just as it did a part of the floor opened up, revealing a pool of water. Lanturn splashed into the pool and dived down, out of the rage of most attacks.
"Trapinch, try a giga drain," Vic said. He knew that would be effective against Lanturn if it hit, but he had to admit, he didn't know whether ground moves would hit it at all.
"Traa~" Trapinch said in response. She tried to suck some energy from the lanturn, but with it being under water, the attack failed.
"Lanturn, dive," Surge ordered. His pokémon leaped out of the water with a splash.
"Trapinch, try to dodge!" Vic shouted. He wasn't quick enough though--Lanturn smashed into Trapinch, with a lot of splashback hitting too. It was probably that which Trapinch couldn't deal with. He knew that they hated water with a vengeance. "Trapinch, return. I'm sorry. That was my fault."
"Disappointing, Angelo," Surge said. He seemed to have lost some of the enthusiasm he'd had for the match. He might even have thought Vic was defeated already. And he might have been right--both Shuckle and Gligar were weak to water too. Lanturn might bring about the end of the match.
"I believe in you, Shuckle. It's going to hurt, but you can do this. I know you can," Vic said to his third pokéball.
"Prep talk?" Surge asked, chuckling. "A lot of good that'll do."
Vic nodded. "We'll see. Go, Shuckle!"

"Shuh," Shuckle said. He poked his head out of his shell and looked around for his opponent.
"Lanturn, dive again," Surge ordered. His pokémon splashed out of the water and headed straight for Shuckle.
"Now, Shuckle, toxic!" Vic shouted. He knew they had to hit first time, otherwise they might not have any chance. Luckily Shuckle was quick to respond--he fired a shot of poisonous gunk from his shell, which hit lanturn right on the torso.
A second later, the water pokémon smashed against Shuckle. Again the splashback caused a lot of damage, but Vic was sure Shuckle could handle it--at least long enough to do some damage to Lanturn.
"In the water, double time," Surge ordered.
Lanturn bounced up, then splashed back into the pool.
"Now we wait, Shuckle," Vic said. "Patience is a virtue."
"Bad move, Angelo," Surge sighed. "Lanturn, dive again."
As soon as Lanturn came out of the water Vic called his next order. "Power split!"
"Shuh~" Shuckle said. He glowed pink and stole some of Lanturn's attack power, but not before it hit him, right on the shell.
"And back in the water," Surge ordered. "You'd better think of something quickly, Angelo. Your pokémon can't take much more of this."
Vic nodded. He knew just how much his pokémon could take. "Shuckle, defence curl."
Shuckle retracted all of his tendrils into his shell and waited for the next order. It wouldn't come until Lanturn surfaced again, and judging by Lt. Surge's one-dimensional water tactics thus far, that wouldn't be far off.
"I was thinking of something a little braver than defence curl," Surge sighed.
"Shuckle start your rollout attack," Vic said.
"Hrm?" Surge grumbled. He watched as Shuckle began to roll forward, toward the pool of water. "It's moving in Lanturn. Use its momentum as well as your own--hit it hard!"
The lanturn leaped out of the water, just as Shuckle used his tendrils to jump up. The two pokémon smashed together. They bounced off one another and crashed back onto the battlefield. After landing Lanturn didn't move. Shuckle stayed inside his shell. It seemed they were both out for the count.
"Excellently done," Surge said. "I didn't have you down as a kamikaze fighter. But here we... oh?"
"Shuh?" Shuckle asked. He poked his head out of his shell and looked at Lanturn, collapsed on the floor.
"Oh-ho-ho, look at that. What an excellent fighter," Surge laughed. "I commend you Shuckle. Great determination. Let's see how you handle Electivire."
"We're ready for it," Vic said. "Shuckle, start up your rollout again!"
