The S.S. Anne tooted her horn and pulled away from the docks, leaving its former passengers to their own devices. Vic was sat on a bench watching it go with Lizzy. He wanted to get going and find some place to get food, but Lizzy wanted to watch the ship until it was gone from view.
"When will we go on a ship again?" Lizzy asked.
"I don't know," said Vic. It sounded like Lizzy liked being on ships, but Vic hated it. He was quick to get sea sick, and since he was his sister's guardian, he had to be strong for her. If he was throwing up over the side of a ship he was not being strong.
"What will we do now?" Lizzy asked.
Vic thought they should get food first and then look around the city to see what it was like. He hoped there was a gym nearby, so he could make some money, otherwise their first meal in Kanto might be their last too. "How about we get some lunch? I see a sushi bar over there," Vic said.
"Yaaaay! Let's get sushi, let's get sushi!" Lizzy bounced up and down. She slipped off the bench and tugged on Vic's hand. "Let's go already!"
Vic stood up and let Lizzy lead him to the sushi bar across the street, where he hoped they could fill their stomachs.

Vic helped Lizzy up onto her stool then sat down next to her watching the plates of sushi go by on the conveyor.
"You remember how this works, right?" Vic asked.
"Aha. Cheapest colours only," Lizzy nodded.

As they picked what they wanted from the moving conveyor belt and chowed down Vic listened to a couple of trainers nearby who were talking about the town's gym leader. It sounded like he was an electric-type specialist. He'd probably wipe the floor with Gastly and Shuckle. Vic thought he should probably get another pokémon - a ground type - before challenging the gym leader. He pulled out a map and placed it between his and Lizzy's plates.
"You see there, that's called Diglett's Cave. You fancy going in there to find a ground type pokémon to add to the team?" Vic asked.
Lizzy nodded, her mouth full of raw fish. "Mmhmm."
Vic put the map back into his pocket and counted up his and Lizzy's plates. Three each, all yellow. He checked his wallet and pulled out his last note. "I hope you're full. We might not be eating again for a while."

Vic walked out of the cave and looked around for Lizzy but she was nowhere to be seen. She wasn't usually one to wander off, but then she hadn't been the same since the fire. No surprise there. If he'd been able to afford it he'd have sent her to counselling. They were bumming it around Kanto though, so counselling was a no-go.
"Lizzy?"
"Hi," Lizzy replied. Vic turned around and there she was. Standing right where Vic had been two seconds before.
"Hey. We, uh... we caught it. How about we go to the pokémon centre to heal it up, then go sit in a park somewhere?" Vic asked.
"I like it. I think the pokémon centre's this way," Lizzy replied, skipping away. She headed back toward town, happy as a wooper at bath time, and Vic followed, trying to push his worries to the back of his mind.

"Hey, you know, this gligar was pretty easy to catch. I wonder if it's as much trouble as the old man says,"
Vic wondered. He plucked the pokéball from its clip and tossed it up and down in his hand.
"Maybe all pokémon are easy to catch like that?" Lizzy suggested.
Vic remembered when he caught Gastly. That was no easy task. In fact it nearly took him all evening. But some of that might have been down to the fact that he was battling her with Shuckle, who attacks with all the ferocity of a cotton wool bud.
"I think it's because you're a good trainer. You could catch reshiram if you wanted to!" Lizzy said.
"Well I don't know about that," Vic laughed. Gligars were one thing, but legendary pokémon... nobody caught legendary pokémon. Still, it was nice to have some support. Even if it was just from his little sister. "Thanks, though. Love you, Lizzy."
"Love you too," Lizzy smiled.
As they got to the centre of the sandy city, Vic noticed the pokémon gym on the sea front, the pokémart in the plaza, the contest hall on the hill and the pokémon centre, near the exit of the town. It seemed as though they'd have to come back to the plaza to let Gligar stretch its wings, as there were no real expanses of green anywhere. Although maybe if they went out of the city they'd find something.
"Where do you think we should go after we've got the pokémon healed up?" Vic asked.
Lizzy thought for a second. "I think we should go past the Diglett's Cave. There was grass that way."
Vic pulled out his map and checked. 'Route Eleven', he read. There was a lot of grass that way. Seemed like a good place to rest up and get to know their new pokémon. "Looks promising. First things first, into the pokémon centre. I wonder if they have Nurse Joys here, too?"

Prologue

Chase stepped out of the boat and onto the ramp. He stuffed his hands in his pockets and was about to walk away when one of the Ships staff stopped him. "Excuse me Sir! I'm afraid you've got a stowaway on your shoulder."
The little Joltik looked up at the man in shock and jumped down the back of Chase's jacket. "Oh." Chase started as he realised what the man was referring to. He turned away "No, that's mine." He assured.
Finally off the boat and onto solid ground, Chase took in the sights of the city. He could see the Pokémon Gym from where he was and he was already confident he could beat the leader. Poking at his state of the art pokégear at his wrist, Chase found that it was an electric type Gym. He glanced at the bug type that had come out of hiding and was now sitting lazily on his shoulder. "See I told you, you're no use to me." He grumbled. How was a tiny electric bug type going to help him in the least at an electric type gym?
Poking at his pokégear some more, Chase also found that unless he had three pokémon he wouldn't be able to challenge that gym anyway. Chase shut off his pokégear and huffed. "Looks like I'm going to have to get myself a team before I can get started." He said to himself.
The pokémon centre was to the north of the city and that was where Chase was headed. Now he was in Kanto he wanted to settle in a stable bed for the night and use the pokémon centre computers. He would be able to research decide on the pokémon he wanted in his team there and even find out where in the region they could be found.

Chase headed back towards the diglett cave as soon as he stepped out of the pokémon centre. He didn't get far before he heard someone calling after him.
"Hey Chase! I challenge you to a battle!" It was Millie.
Chase sighed loudly. "I don't have time for this." He called back to her.
"Aw c'mon. Don't be a scaredy skitty." Millie taunted. "Just a one on one. My Sandshrew against your Onix."
"All right, all right, fine." Chase agreed. "Let's get this over with."

The two trainers walked round to the pokémon centres practice field. Chase took Onix's pokéball from his belt. It felt good to hold a pokéball, one with his very own pokémon in.
"Let's get it started!"Millie yelled from her side of the field. "Go Sandshrew!"
Joltik hopped out from under Chase's collar. "Joooltiktiktik!"
"Joltik! Not you!" Chase complained. Joltik hung it's head sadly. "Next time, I promise." Joltik hopped back onto Chase's shoulder and hid under his collar to sulk. "Go, Onix!"
"Gwoooar"
Onix was looking great, strong and healthy. Chase nodded, pleased.
"Let's start this with an iron tail attack Onix." Chase said.
Onix swung his steely tail down into Sandshrew, sending the pokémon rolling over in a heap. It dragged itself to it's feet at Millies command and flung clumps of mud towards him.
Chase shouted "Use earthquake!"
As Millie yelled "Metal claw."
The earth trembled and Sandshrew lost it's footing. It bounced around on the ground before finally being thrown up high enough for it to launch into a metal claw attack. Onix's tough exterior meant the attack didn't do too much damage.
"Finish up with slam!" Chase commanded quickly and confidently.
Onix hurled himself at the opponent, slamming down with it's entire body. When he rolled off, Sandshrew was out cold.
"Darnit!" Millie complained stamping her foot.
"Great job Onix. You've done me proud!" Chase praised putting a hand on the giant rock types nose. "Return."
The content looking onix disappeared back into his ball.
"See you around, Millie. Keep training." And with that he turned and walked away, out of the training field and back towards diglett's cave.
