Gym Challenge

So you think you're ready to take on Lt. Surge? Sabrina? Gary?

In Kanto you can take on whichever gym you like, in whichever order you like. If you've got a team of water pokémon and live on Cinnabar Island, it makes perfect sense to start your journey by challenging Blaine.

Obviously you're more likely to start with the gyms nearest where you start your journey, but if that turns out to be the Viridian Gym, you might find yourself waiting around for weeks for Gary to return from one of his jaunts.

If any other gym leader is away from the gym, they are usually found at their local hangout, listed on their profile page. So if Erika isn't at the Celadon Gym, you should look around the city – near the fountain – where she's sure to be found.

Once you've located the Gym and its leader, and you've psyched yourself up for the battle, there are a few things you should know.

1) You must have at least THREE pokémon before you can challenge a gym.

2) In battle, admins control gym leaders. That means if you're ready to challenge a gym, you have to let the admins know. If they're available (which they should be, if they're online) they'll set up the gym leader's team and meet you online

3) The admins will let you know the format for the battle via PM. All battles will be 3v3, 4v4, 5v5 or 6v6, depending on the number of pokémon you have and the outcome of a dice roll performed by the admins.

4) The pokémon used by the Gym Leader will also be decided using a dice roll performed by the admins. You will not know which pokémon you'll be up against until they come out of their pokéball.

5) When the admins are ready they'll PM you to let you know which server to join on the battle sim.

Then you're underway!

When you win a gym battle you will receive a Gym Badge - to be displayed in the badge case on your profile screen - and an Evolution Token, which allows you to evolve one of your pokémon.

You will also be permitted to raise the level of all of your pokémon by one. This includes any pokémon who did not take part in the battle.

If you should lose, you have to wait at least one day before rechallenging the gym, and admins are free to decide whether or not to accept your challenge.

Rather than jump straight back into the arena, a better idea would be to go and do some training--maybe switch out some of your pokémon's moves, or look for a new pokémon to help you in the fight.

Just remember that when you do rechallenge a gym, the format may not be the same as it was in your previous battles, and the gym leader's pokémon will undoubtedly have switched.

With the right preparation, training and tactics, you'll win out eventually, and can then decide which gym you want to challenge next.

Before you know it, you'll be on Victory Road, looking up at the foreboding doorway into the Indigo Plateau and shivering with a mixture of nerves and excitement.

Good luck, and no matter what happens, never give up!

Pokémon Contests

So you think you've got the cutest, coolest, smartest pokémon around?

In Kanto there are eight Pokémon Contest Halls that hold regular contests and they need people like you to join in the fun.

Chances are if you check out the hall near you there'll be a contest about to start, so you've got no excuses not to give it a shot.

Before you take the stage, though, there are a few things you should know.

1) There is no limit on the number of pokémon you need to enter a contest. Only got a caterpie? That's fine!

2) There are two rounds to the competition. The first is the appeal round, where you show off your pokémon to the crowd. You can decide if you get through to the second round or not.

3) The second round consists of battles between the remaining eight coordinators. All NPCs will be controlled by admins. That means if you get through to the second round of a contest, you have to let the admins know. A post for the battles will be created in the Battle Planning thread by the admins, where a mutually convenient time can be arranged for the battles to take place. (All times GMT unless otherwise stated.)

4) In the battle rounds you can only use one pokémon. This doesn't have to be the same pokémon you used in the appeal round, but you can't switch between battles.

5) The format for contest battles is always 1v1. If you win the first battle of the second round, you will proceed to the semi-finals, where you will enter another 1v1 battle. If you win in the semi-finals, you will proceed to the final, where you will enter another 1v1 battle. All battles will take place consecutively unless you request a break.

6) The pokémon used by NPCs will be decided using a dice roll performed by the admins. Each contestant's pokémon will be revealed in the contest's post.

7) When the time for the battle comes, the admins will let you know which server you should join when online with the PokéSim by posting in the Battle Planning thread.

8.) Contest battles are the same as regular battles, which you can find out about here. Just remember when you're writing it up for a post that it's a contest battle, and it's supposed to be pretty, not just just powerful.

9) Whenever you win a battle, check the contest's post in the Battle Planning thread to see who your next opponent will be, then head back to the PokéSim--to the same server you were in for your first battle.

If you win the final battle you will receive a Ribbon
- to be displayed in the ribbon case on your profile screen - and an Evolution Token, which allows you to evolve one of your pokémon.

You will also be permitted to raise the level of all of your pokémon by one. This includes any pokémon who did not take part in the contest.

Once you have a city's ribbon, you cannot enter any more contests at that hall.

If you should lose, you must travel to a different contest hall. You cannot enter the same city's contest twice consecutively. That means if you lose in Lavender Town, you have to travel somewhere else. If you then enter a contest in Fuchsia City, you're free to go back to Lavender town--whether you won or lost in Fuchsia.

If you should be unlucky enough to lose five contests in a row you will receive an evolution token for all your hard work.

Before you know it, you'll have five ribbons, which is the amount you need to be able to enter the Grand Festival, held at the Indigo Plateau.

Good luck, and no matter what happens, never give up!
