Devi was bored. She was on her campus tour of Sovereign Heights after her recent decision to reject the acceptance to New York University's film program. She needed to stay in the city for the war that raged on in the shadows, and for now that was a more important duty than her dreams of working in the film industry. Eventually, however, she hoped the war would end with her still alive and able to pursue her dreams. And the next step in that pursuit would be enrolling as a Film Major at Sovereign Heights, but first she needed to make sure this was the right program instead of DCU.
The tour was nearly over, and now the tour guide had asked for all the participants to socialize with one another and meet the other prospective students. Social small talk wasn't exactly Devi's forte, so she fidgeted nervously alone at one of many tables in the outdoor cafeteria, waiting for the time to pass.

Jack wasn't terribly bothered about his future. As a senior at Hillworth his prospects weren't, exactly, as ideal as those of teenagers who attended places like Meadowview and Azure Valley. He had always been a bright boy with… interesting ideas, but lacked the sort of focus and drive that made good students good students.
Still, he passed. With reasonable grades and without much effort.
This was because Jack wasn't really bad at anything, exceptional at nothing, and acceptably average at everything else.
With the notable exception of Olivia Newton John, he had only one real passion. And that was the Theatre.
Jack lived to perform.
"Hey," that diamond smile, when he turned it on Devi was absolutely genuine. His teeth glittered. Obviously, Jack believed in bleaching. "Is this seat taken?"
He gestured amiably at the chair across from her.

"Nope, you can have it," she said almost without looking up. She glanced her eyes towards his face for only half a second before she got glimpse of his pearly whites. She suddenly felt self-conscious about her own smile. That was some damn fine dental hygiene. She let him take his seat and paused for a moment, unsure if she should recognize that he is sitting across from her or carry on doing what she was doing (see: doing nothing). She chose the more plausible option.
"I'm Devi," she gave a closed-mouth toothless smile that wasn't particularly charming. "Are you looking to go to Sovereign?" Of course he is, why the hell else would he be on the tour? "Or, sorry, that's a stupid question. What are you looking to do at Sovereign?" Most people she had met were interested in business or sciences or the arts, although she supposed there weren't that many other categories once grouped so broadly.

"My name's Jack," said Jack as he slipped into the seat that Devi had so kindly given him permission to take. Tall, but naturally graceful and on the skinny side, there was a certain level of grace to everything that Jack did. He cared, perhaps a little too much, about appearances, and it showed in the way that he carried himself.
"Honestly?" he looked Devi in the eye, "I'm mostly here because I didn't want to go to class today."
Jack wasn't big on schools. He'd always been better at the self-education thing.
Arrogance. He had it.
"If I do come to Sovereign," his expression softened. There was kindness in his words. "I'd like to study acting."

Devi cracked the faintest of smiles at his remark. She didn't quite feel like attending school either, but typically she made it a point of going. However, that wasn't to say her reason for picking this timeslot for the tour - one which falls under school hours - had no other motivation.
"Acting?" she peaked a brow. "You're an actor then I take it? i did some shows at Meadowview, never a lead role or anything, just a background extra, swaying in the back. I had a line once." She stopped herself from continuing on about her lack of both talent and remarkable life events. "Did you do any theatre at your school? Or are you more of a film-acting guy?"

"I am an actor!" Jack declared. He did not raise his voice, because it was not really necessary, but there was still passion in his words. It dripped off of them like butter.
Jack adored attention and had always possessed a knack for performing. His was a big, uncontainable sort of personality. It had both amused and horrified his teachers since before he'd been able to tie his shoes.
"I love the theatre," that pearly smile was effervescent and, apparently, undying. This was how Jack generally looked, when speaking to a lady. He thought good dental hygiene was terribly sexy. "I would like to play the lead in something someday, but that role almost always went to Allen Woody when I was in Meadowview."
Damn you, Allen Woody.
"I go to Hillworth now," he explained, "and the theatre department there leaves… a little to be desired."
Jack coughed.
"It would be so awesome to get into films, though! Since I think that's where all of the big money is?" A question, because Jack was only assuming.

"Well, you certainly have the theatricality to be an actor," she playfully teased. "I think there's more money in film, because nobody gives two shits about theatre. Those shows keep closing down on Broadway, except that Spiderman one...I kind of want to see that and see people fall and get injured." She had read about how disastrous it was, and anything infamous for being awful is the type of thing that Devi would be a fan of.
Except for Paris Hilton.
She hated Paris Hilton.
"Allen Woody snagged a lot of leads, but I wasn't ever in competition with him," she said. "Besides, he was kind of a d**k backstage, acted like he was all-that and some hot s**t. But I saw him getting changed backstage once. I'm no expert but he had nothing to brag about." Devi wasn't quite sure where that line of 'appropriate' and 'inappropriate' was when it came to conversation with strangers.

Jack gave three shits about theatre. He was rightfully dismayed by the truth in Devi's words, and grieved for all of the shows that had been closed down. Jack was, and always had been, a firm believer in the power of make believe.
Theatre was the best.
Films were just richer.
"You actually want to see people fall and get hurt?" Jack's voice was not scolding. Amused was a better word for it. The expression on his face changed slightly as Devi revealed poor Allen's… inadequacy. His lips twitched.
When Jack spoke next, he kept his voice low, so as not to embarrass Devi. But it was still ripe with excitement, and curious approval. "And you peeped at Allen too!"
It really was true. The quiet ones were always the freakiest.
"I like you," Jack's smile was everlasting, but there was a slightly naughty lift to it now. "We should go see a show sometime. Chicago, maybe? What do you say? My treat."

"I think I'd like that," she smiled. She wasn't sure if that was a date proposal or what, but she could definitely use some more friends - especially friends that she didn't meet in the whole Senshi business. Her alter-ego had taken over most of her life, and sacrifices were made in consequence. "I haven't seen Chicago yet. Well, I kind of saw the movie but not the play...or any non-high school play, really."
Her parents weren't big fans of the theatre, although they had gone to all of her shows to support her. She sighed, reminiscing on the days when she was able to spend time with her parents other than just over the phone.
"So when are you thinking about seeing this show?"

It was definitely a date proposal. But, as far as Jack was concerned, it could be whatever Devi wanted it to be. When it came to company and, with the exception of BJ and Ducky, who were his best friends, Jack had almost always preferred spending time with ladies to being around men.
He'd found that, generally, they had more things in common. Jack didn't know very many seventeen year old boys interested in going to the theatre. Then again, he'd never really bothered to ask.
"I think there's supposed to be a show downtown in a couple of weeks," Jack plucked some fuzz from his blazer, and let it fall to the floor beside his chair. "I know someone who can get us tickets for a good price. If you want to give me your number, I'll call you when I know what night we're going."
He twinkled.
"Maybe we could get lunch or something beforehand."

"D-definitely," she stammered. A meal was involved - yup, that sounded like a date. In her mind, Devi imagined herself doing something cute that she had seen in countless romantic comedies where the girl takes out her napkin and writes her number on it for the boy to call her later, say something flirtatious and get up and leave.
However, Devi's life was much more of a Judd Apatow directed Superbad-esque comedy about an awkward teenager by day...and a Christopher Nolan Dark Knight-esque dark superhero horror-drama by night with an overall vibe of a Wes Craven Scream-esque horror-comedy. The point is, she was not the romantic comedy star, and she could not pull off the moves of one.
"5554247826, bettercallitbitch," she blurted in a flurry of digits and words, meaning to give out her cellphone number and tell him to call her. She felt a little bit of a head-rush. She hadn't really been in a date-proposal situation in a while. Not since Damian, and that had ended less than poorly. As such, this was particularly awkward for her. Hell, he hadn't even asked for her number.
"Sorry."
Her apology for her oddness was soft and barely audible.

Devi's life might have been as unlike the script of a romantic comedy as it was possible to get. That was okay. Jack would have enjoyed a romantic rendezvous with Sandra Bullock or a playful liaison with Katherine Heigl, but it was the ladies he liked and not necessarily the films that they starred in.
And Jack thought Devi was very charming. In her own, special way.
"Oh," the corners of Jack's lips twitched with amusement. "Don't worry. I've been called worse things in my life."
Jack had always been fond of women who weren't shy about using their mouths. Devi's vocabulary was incredibly refreshing, especially coming from the lips of a girl who seemed almost timid otherwise. If timid wasn't the right word, then Devi was at least very conscious of herself.
"But, uh, you spoke a little fast. I want to make sure I got the whole number. What was it?" Jack pulled his cellphone from his pocket, and started entering her number. "5555-424…"
He waited.

"5," she started, teasingly going at an obnoxiously slow pace. "5. 5. 4. 2. 4. 7. 8. 2. 6."
"Was that slow enough for you?" she joked, but the expression on her face did not make it so obvious that she was trying to be friendly. Very rarely would her expressions help provide social cues that she desired to emulate. "So when should I expect a call from you? The show isn't too many weeks away, I hope."

"That was perfect," Jack conceded with an approving nod. He was unbothered by the expression that Devi wore. It was enough that she was giving him her number.
Unless it was a fake. It wouldn't have been the first time, as much as Jack hated to admit it.
He regarded Devi thoughtfully, head cocked to the side, and then decided that she was probably not trying to mislead him. Devi seemed to have enjoyed his company so far, and a trip to the theatre was pretty much as harmless as harmless could get. There wasn't any reason for her to be trying to avoid him.
Instead of answering her question, Jack pressed a button on his phone and held it up to his ear.
This would have been very rude, if Devi's phone hadn't started to ring. Jack's lips twitched. He twinkled at her from across the table.

Devi frowned as Jack dialed a number on his phone and made a call in the middle of their conversation. She had thought they were getting along, but clearly he was bored by their chat. Her eyes then widened in surprise as she heard a noise she rarely ever heard - her ringtone. Someone was calling her cellphone. Acting as though she gets a phone call often, she took a look at her phone's caller ID - unknown number. She answered anyways, nearly starting a "hello," but stopped before she could finish the first syllable.
The pieces had come together. The phone call was from Jack. Slightly embarrassed, she tried once more to play it off as though this situation was typical for her. "Now I have your number," she nodded. "I'll save it to my phone."
She made a mental note to herself to do that sometime. "So, do you have a car in the city for our night on the town?"
