The mountains. In the end it came back to the mountains. They had tormented him upon his arrival in these lands, and now it seemed that they were the protection of the treasure he sought so insistently.

At last, at last he would have his precious gem. And no one would ever rob him of that treasure ever again. His, forevermore.

These were the thoughts that filled Fregit's head as he climbed higher into the mountains where his treasure was hidden. It didn't even cross his mind to think of what Soquili might choose to make their homes here. He was intent on his goal, his amethyst with rubies, his precious gem.

The mountains were extensive, even the blind would be aware of this and it was unwise to underestimate the vast expanse of land that stretched before Fregit. These lands and this slope in particular were perhaps just a touch unique in many respects - while they looked no different than other slopes from a distance, what set them apart was the herd that lived on them. Split into factions, led by the largest families in each location, it was often well guarded and very little went unnoticed.

Alas the stallion was in luck today for this small patch of land was in the hooves of a smaller family. Well, they weren't strictly a 'family', their relationship left largely to interpretation but it was their holding and therefore under their jurisdiction. With only four soquili in this region it was difficult to police and as such the stallion had gotten far further than most might in other parts.

Unfortunately he wasn't to go unnoticed for much longer as one of the soquili who lived in this region had caught wind of his arrival. The birds and wildlife spoke in whispers, somewhat fearful of his 'scary' appearance and as a consequence the mare had elected to investigate. Setting aside her other business, she had gathered her wits and was now approaching his immediate vicinity. It would have been difficult to hear her approach but he would certainly see her - first the horn would appear over the hillock, then the gleaming jewel...and finally the rest of her.

It was there that the kirin came to a halt, perched delicately on the small hill where she could observe the approaching stranger with curiosity and just a touch of suspicion.

"You are not what I expected," she mused, her words laden with a thick accent. "But a trespasser all the same," she added softly.

Unfortunately this mare had yet to receive any warning of this stallion. Or rather, she had and then hadn't listened, it had been Resynn (her companion) who had taken note of the description. All things considered, it was probably not the best of times to have zoned out if fate had decided she was meant to come face to face with one of the very creatures she was meant to watch for.

She had a bit of a knack for this.

Frankly it was amazing she hadn't been killed sooner.

The serepentine stallion looked up as the clear and unexpected voice rang out to see a pale mare looking right at him. She was too dark for an opal, but not banded like a tiger's eye. Or at least, not naturally so. Her adornments must have come from human hands and two-leggers were entirely uninteresting to Fregit. This specimen, he determined, was flawed, and had no bearing on his search.

The words she'd spoken were ignored entirely as coming from an uninteresting creature and having no relevance to what he sought. The stallion continued on his way.

Well, there was certainly one way to ring alarm bells and that was one of them. When you made it clear that this territory was yours and not to be intruded upon, yet the individual elected to ignore you, it generally meant 'trouble' in every sense of the word. Whether he was simply arrogant remained to be seen but the fact still remained that he had disregarded her completely. The kirin was a patient sort to be sure, but there were certain things she wouldn't accept and it was usually based on varying circumstances - being completely ignored was one of those things. If it had been in open territory she would have ignored it but unfortunately for Fregit, he was not in open territory.

With this thought fixed in her mind she didn't delay in stepping backwards and deliberately in to his path. His attempts to walk passed her and into her lands were not to be received calmly. This done her unusually bright eyes settled on the serpentine creature, cool and otherwise observant. As of yet there was no indication of immediate hostility but she had never been one to lose her temper so soon; she worked on the rule of three after all - provide him with an opportunity to leave, warn him again and if this was ignore then the third warning would be much clearer... and probably a lot more painful too.

"These lands are not yours, stallion," she pointed out levelly, her voice raised so that she would be heard. "You cannot be granted entry without my say-so."

Glowing slit-pupiled eyes narrowed as the unbecoming mare moved to bar his way. He had no interest in her at all, and she wished to keep him from his goal. This was...not to be permitted. Then she spoke. A mere mare, should claim these lands, and bar him entry? The thought was laughable. But perhaps it was a thing she clung to as her appearance was...less than desirable.

"Ownership of land means nothing to me," he hissed at last, annoyed enough to leave off the sibilant esses that normally amused him. "You will not keep me from my treasure."

He wasn't really interested in attacking the stranger mare. He simply needed to get past her to reclaim his precious gem.

"It may mean nothing to you but it means a great deal to those of us who live here," Shizukii retorted with disdain that matched his own annoyance. She would not be budged by the serpentine stallion, no matter what nonsense he spouted and nor would she permit him to go passed her. His total disregard for her borders and queries had sealed his fate in that respect - if he had no respect for her territory where the rules were slightly more lax then he would be in a great deal of trouble when he crossed over to the next!

"You will turn back," she ordered, a grimace forming upon her refined features. Her gaze remained fixed on him and her demeanour remained calm in the face of his irritation. She'd seen more frightening things in her time and experienced far more monstrous sights. What she also had to her advantage, was the fact that she knew the soquili in these lands had lived here for longer than she had and made no reference to a 'treasure', if they had one then she suspected it would be something they would strive to protect.

"There is no treasure here, all that lies beyond are the homes of the various families that exist in this herd - nothing more than that." she stated coolly.

The mare was becoming more and more of an obstacle with each passing breath. And there was, sadly, only one good way to deal with such an obstruction. Destruction. It was not his preferred method, but she was obstinate and immovable.

"You will not stop me," he replied, voice low with threat. "You cannot keep me from the treasure I have tracked for so many moons for I know she is here." In his annoyance at her obliviousness, he spoke more plainly than he normally would. Did she think glittery rocks would hold his interest so? If they did, he would be far more interested in this mare who dared to bar his path. The only treasure worth having was in flesh and blood and beauty.

Fregit paused, tail lashing in annoyance. "This is the last chance I will give you. Move aside."

It was just as well the Kirin had found him, the creature was hostile and had no appreciation for how things were done. If he'd been located by one less able, things could have turned incredibly sour. Granted, as the situation stood, things were beginning to turn sour, but, there was a tingling across her tail that indicated she wasn't alone. Call it a sixth sense if you would, but since she had reunited with her commander, the kirin had become more acutely aware of his presence. Each time he entered an area, she knew. Each time he left an area, she knew. She couldn't explain any of it, it was simply how things were.

"You will not get passed me," Shizukii reiterated, her lips pursing into a thin line as he clarified what he was looking for. It was obvious to her now, he sought a soquili and given his current behaviour, that soquili was in grave danger indeed! Apparently, it was vital now, more than ever, to make sure that he didn't get through... it was her duty to protect this border and her fellow herd mates.

"This is your last chance to turn around, you are not welcome here," she stated darkly. A moment later she heard the faint 'clatter' of wings and a dull thump - it was a distance behind her, but it was enough to let her know that a certain someone had landed nearby. Unsurprisingly the revelation bolstered and strengthened her stance, she wasn't the greatest of warriors but Resynn was!

"Leave," she ordered.

Slit-pupiled eyes narrowed as the mare continued talking. He would not, could not allow her to stop him, not when he was so very close...he could practically smell his precious gem and not just as the old dead scent he'd been tracking.

And all that stood between them was this supposed border guard.

"Not without my gem," he hissed and with that, Fregit attacked. He charged, but instead of aiming for the mare herself, hurled himself at the space next to her, serpentine tail stretching out, aiming to grab her by the neck. It was an old trick, learned in his long ago youth. His father had found that it was a tactic most Soquili were unprepared for, seeing how most of them didn't have the sheer length or strength required in their tails.

Assuming those tails were flesh and not inferior hair.

As a mare who had been in the company of humans and had been at war for many years of her life, Fregit's move might have seemed creative but it certainly wasn't foreign to her. Admittedly, Fregit was making good use of his own tail, but the manner in which he had employed it gave a nod towards the way the humans used their mighty whips and ropes. She'd seen the tactic before, designed to grab an equine by the head and legs to fell them and it was for this reason that she was able to dodge it.

Her movements were by no means clean, delicate or graceful, but they did serve to move her out of the way. It was with a kick, a thrust and a stumbling set of steps that she shifted away from his tail and round towards his side. However, she had made certain not to be in his immediate reach - tail or otherwise - and as such, was a number of feet away from him. Regardless of this, the mare had made certain to keep herself ahead of him, she might have been off to the side but she was still in front.

However, given her vulnerabilities she wasn't going to spend the next ten minutes dancing around an angry lizard.

"Help, help, help, heeeeeelp!" she yelled in a similar tone to a damsel in distress, though this part was unintentional. "He's going to EAT ME!" she added, her tone increasing in pitch in the process. There was of course a delay after this but sure enough, there was a bit of a wry reply from nearby.

"Did you infuriate a mountain lion or -" the reply was cut short as the male rounded the hillock and was able to observe both kirin and mutant. "Oh sweet mother of - " again he paused, his expression twisting into one of exasperation. "Well he's a bit bigger than a mountain lion," Resynn conceded at last.

"No s**t," the Kirin replied, without turning to face him.

Thrown offbalance by the mare's movements, Fregit had to pause and reorient himself. The stallion hissed angrily - curse her, that she had the audacity to dodge out of his way! And then she had called for help and, miraculously enough, help had arrived in the form of a stallion. Damn. Two to one were odds that made this significantly harder.

Still, it would take more than that to deter him.

The green stallion charged again, before the new enemy could close, and lashed out with his forehooves at the mare. If he could disable her quickly, the odds would return to one-on-one. It might take longer, but it was more likely that he'd be able to win through to where his gem lay hidden.

"Eeeeee!" The kirin squealed, reinforcing the very public knowledge that her combat skills left much to be desired. In fact, had the situation not been terribly dire then there was a high chance that Resynn might have wingfaced at her outburst. Unfortunately now was not a time for jest and it was through sheer luck that she managed to skitter out of the green serpent's way, her ears flattening tight against her head as she dodged his second assault. Alas, as a support based creature she was highly unlikely to keep this charade up and wouldn't last for long - her luck would run out at some point.

It was with this in mind that the stallion plunged forward, closing the gap between himself and the pair with reasonable ease. Admittedly, he was not an individual who could run as quickly as a grounded, but he made up for it in other ways. Thus, no sooner had his mate squealed than he was in position and had parked himself firmly between Shizukii and Fregit, one eyebrow quirked and gaze fixed on the serpent.

"Boo," he murmured with a flare of his wings and without further delay, bounced forward to mock the assault that Fregit had performed on the Kirin. It wasn't intended as a powerful strike, just enough to make the serpent jump backwards...

This was not pleasing. Again, he had missed hitting the ugly mare, and Fregit was not at all happy about it. Even worse, the stallion had now joined the battle and he was outnumbered. And it seemed that the male, at least, had some concept of how to fight. This was not at all good.

The snakelike stallion was already offbalance, having risen onto his hind legs for the attack. So when the enemy stallion came forward in an attack, Fregit was forced to hop backwards, lashing out with hooves and tail not to injure, but simply to regain his balance. Pebbles skittered around beneath his hooves and the uneven mountain surface was treacherous, but the green stallion managed to get all four hooves planted on the ground once more.

His fumbling was not without cost though. For the first time in the encounter, Fregit was totally defenseless. And now he was panting for breath, unused to the thinner air of the mountains.
