Morkin's body felt cold, but he didn't mind. He walked quietly about, the night sky dark. As he moved, he counted the stars, little tail wiggling some, his ears perked. He reared up on hind legs, pawing at the air some, before dropping down, and wiggled out his body. His eyes flickered, looking around, eyes curious, before he moved quietly back toward the Nursery. His mother was out for the night, and with no nest to go back to, he was told to stay there until his mother returned. He curled up quietly in some grass, head resting on the ground, green eyes watching the sky.
The owl, Queza, swooped over head, let out a screech, and landed near him, feathers ruffled. She let out another noise, before flying off again, and perched on a tree near by, staring toward him, watching over him. Morkin didn't move, but he didn't sleep. His eyes flickered from one noise made outside the nursery to the other, mind wondering what all these noises were, his body wiggling some.

Sitting still... it was difficult. And everytime Tembrook stopped moving, he got antsy. It gave him time to think about things, time he didn't want to have. Even as a young colt his mind wandered aimlessly and, if nothing else just yet, he found that unsettling. He had learned to drown it out with action. Sometimes it got him in a bit of trouble, but as of yet he hadn't gotten himself killed. If he had learned anything, that was a step in the right direction.
And so, acting on instinct again, he had taken off after an owl he had seen flying over the Nursery. It looked like fun, flying. If he was just a little bit smaller he would've tried to climb on his brother's back and get Devi to carry him around. Having wings would be so cool! His brother was so lucky.... He decided then, he would try and get his brother to carry him around. It would work out. He nodded to himself. It would be gre-
Something interrupted his excitement then. A something—make that a someone—he had nearly tripped over. His back hooves clopping against the dirt, he jumped back and his feathered tail went swishing out behind him. "Hey! Whatcha laying there for?"

The only warning Morkin got was a screech from his owl, before the sight of the other colt startled him. He let out a noise, and scrambled to stand and move away, so as A. he wouldn't get hit with those talons, and B. he wouldn't get stepped on by those hooves. He panted some, bangs falling into his eyes, his ears flickering back and forth, before he shook out his body to try and calm himself. He'd never almost been stepped on. Somehow the females of the society always seemed to watch where they were going... that and Morkin always tended to stay out of their way. His eyes flickered quickly up to the bird, whose feathers were ruffled, glaring down at the two colts, before turning her head away.
"...." Letting out a soft sigh, Morkin shook out his head, before looking back up at the other colt. He eyed him curiously, taking in the, as he saw it, odd looking tail, the horn upon his head, and the feathers in his hair. The most striking feature he noticed was the talons. Like his brother and sister, this colt was more Harpy than horse. Looking down upon his own hoofed feet, his ears pinned, before he glanced back at the multi colored colt. ".... I am waiting... for Mother... She had to go for the night." He said, his voice quiet.

Even though he had been the one practically yelling, he always spoke rather loudly, it surprised him that this other colt had reacted so harshly to their impromptu meeting. Sure, he had been surprised, too. Enough to jump back. Heck, maybe he would have fluttered up if he had wings and knew how to use them. This other kid looked physically strained, though. So significantly bothered that Tembrook thought maybe he had accidentally stepped on him after all. And then he realized, he was beginning to think too much again. It would be okay. His new acquaintance looked alright, not injured or anything, and though he hadn't started answering yet, he was at least making some sort of noise. That was enough of an assurance, wasn't it? A slightly unsure grin stretched at the corner of his mouth, one claw lifting from the ground and slapping back down.
Then, the other started to talk. Slowly, thoughtfully. He wasn't sure if that was normal, but heck, at least the foal was actually saying something now. Plus he didn't sound like he was going to die any minute or anything.
"Waiting for your mom, huh?" he repeated, canting his head. In all honesty, he hadn't even noticed the other's curious examination. It could have had something to do with the darkness of night that surrounded them, but that was probably not the main reason. He just tended not to pay attention to subtle things like that when he could help it. "Where'd she go? Uh- I mean sorry about almost stepping on you... I didn't even see you there!" His speech was as disjointed as his thoughts.

His little ears perked, Morkin watched quietly as the other colt seemed to consult him with a look. The red bangs shifted once more into the colt's eyes, and with a shake of his head, he removed them from his site, before backing up a bit, and laying back down. He was far more comfortable near the ground. He didn't know why, but he felt a lot better with it. His ears flickered up, pointing toward the odd tailed one, before he tilted his head and peered up at him with those hawk like green eyes. He stared for a few seconds, before letting out a soft sigh. "Yeah... She goes out some nights and leaves me here... I do not know why.. My brother and sister go out and do what they like... but... I guess I like to be here... I feel safe here.." He whispered quietly.
Morkin's eyes took in the male again. he resembled someone... Perhaps it was the other foal he had met recently, without knowing what was going on. He only saw the male for a few moments before he had left, but he still looked familiar. He blinked, shifting his head, shaking his mane out to get that thought out of his head. Focus on the colt before you now, not on the one you met before. He sighed and looked up at him, staring quietly, before shaking his head to dismiss the almost step on him. "It's nothing... I... Shouldn't lay so close to the walk way.. What brought you over toward the Nursery?

Well, that was unusual. For a moment, Tembrook could only blink, watching with his own growing curiosity. Why was he laying down? It wasn't time to go to sleep, was it? Yeah, it was late, but the feathered colt couldn't imagine that this other kid would go to sleep right after they started talking. Unless... Was he hurt after all? Pursing his lips, he silently fretted, his claws stretching against the dirt. That is, until the conversation started up again and the worries evaporated as if they had never come back at all.
"Oh. I guess she has to do important mistress stuff." Hadn't the nannies said something like that? When his mom left, she was doing important stuff, too, he thought. For the good of the Flock. "But she comes back, right, so it's okay." Since he wasn't allowed to see his father and only knew what he did based on his mother's word, he could only be glad that he had her, at least. Her and Devi. And as long as she came back after she was gone, he decided that he was okay with her leaving. Even if the nannies and their lessons were not so entertaining.
"Safe, huh...?" he tilted his head. "Well, it's more fun than sleeping, at least." Considering the situation, it didn't seem all that safe now, but most of that was probably Tembrook's fault. "Heh, me? I was-" Pausing, he glanced up, catching sight of the all-feather creature he had been following before. He had missed her disdainful look and now only saw that she seemed to be paying them no mind. "I was following that owl. 'Cause flying is cool, ya know? I was thinking I could make my brother fly me around like that owl..." He probably sounded completely ridiculous, staring blissfully into the trees while talking about taking his brother for a spin around the skies.

Morkin watched him quietly, observing his every move. His eyes flickered down to the claws, watching them curiously for several seconds. He tilted his head, ears flickering, before he stared and tilted his head. His eyes glanced down to the white, somewhat dirty hooves on his own legs. He stared, comparing the difference, before shaking his head and carefully glancing back up toward the male, listening to him quietly, before nodding his head in agreement. Important stuff. Every Harpy had them, right?
The prospect of his mother coming back did calm the little colt. He let a small smile slip onto his features, before he stood up, legs a bit wobbly. He didn't spend much time with his siblings, and he never knew his father. But seeing his mother, he tried to trail her as best as he could, to learn from her, even though he was supposed to learn at the Nursery. He did learn there though, when he was dropped off or told to go. But he just felt more comfortable around her.
"Owl?" Morkin murmured, before looking up and staring toward the bird. It stared back, letting out a screech, before turning her head away, staring at something else. Queza flapped her wings, before diving down into some grass not to far away, swooping back up and perching again, before starting to pick at a rat she had just caught. Morkin grimiced, before looking toward the colt. "That's Queza... my mother gave her to me when I emerged... She looks after me... Oh, and I'm Morkin." He stated. He didn't think the prospect of flying was odd, but he decided not to elaborate on it just yet, instead, he thought it over while waiting for a name.

A silence fell around them then and he shifted slightly. It was in that instant he finally noticed it. The other colt was looking down, not as if he were shyly casting his gaze to the ground, although for a moment that's what he thought. Tembrook realized that he was looking at his hooves. Yes, he had still missed the furtive glances at his talons, but the way his new company seemed momentarily transfixed on those white, dusty hooves of his had the feathered foal curious. Blinking a few times, he looked down at his own appendages, first the large, black clawed feet that still made him feel sort of off balance when he walked. Then, he glanced back at the equally dark hooves that were pretty good for running. Better than his claws, he thought. And yet, even as he lifted his gaze back to the foal in front of him, he was unsure what it all meant. He flexed his talons.
For a moment, his mouth slipped open as if he wanted to ask about it. The whole situation of horse feet versus bird feet didn't usually come to light in his world, despite having both. However, the other foal started to move and his attention was caught, eyes flicking to follow the somewhat unsteady stance. Well, Tem couldn't help but wiggle his feathered tail as if he had silently done something right this time. Something that got his new friend to stand up again, too.
"Yeah, the owl!" he answered quickly, following the look right up to where the creature was, eyes widening. As she swooped down, his eyebrows raised and his neck muscles tightened. And when she made her way back to her perch, eating a mouse, his ears temporarily pinned and his eyes grew even wider somehow. "She's good at that!" he exclaimed, nearly over-top the other's explanation. "Wow, a guardian owl, huh?" Ears perked back up as he lowered his gaze and canted his head.
"Morkin?" For some reason he thought that name sounded familiar. Perhaps one of the many things that went in one of his ears and out the other. At one point or another he thought he had heard all the names of the kids in his class. "Okay, Mori. I'm Tembrook!"

Morkin watched him for several seconds. He wondered quietly what the other was thinking about, his little tail flicking some in the thought process. His ears flickered up to the screech of the owl, before tilting toward Tembrook again. Morkin's head bobbed in a nod, finalizing the statement of the owl being like a guardian. In truth, the owl had become one of his only friends lately. His siblings never really spoke to him, being his brother was off doing other things, and his sisters... well... she was female, after all. His body shifted a bit, before he tilted his head.
"Yes, my name's Morkin." He stated again, since it seemed the other colt had questioned it. He let his eyes wonder away from the other, and toward the sky over head, staring quietly, before he walked a small circle, checking something. He watch a specific star, seeing if it would move as he did, only to find it didn't. His head tilted the other way, staring some. Nope, the star stayed where it was. He shook his head, focusing back on the other colt.
Mori? That wasn't his name. He blinked in confusion, brows pulling together. His name was Morkin, not Mori... Or at least he could have sworn it was! He pawed lightly at the ground, before opening his mouth, and then closing it again. Maybe he was just giving him something that he had heard about before. The word slipped him, but he ignored it and moved on. "Tembrook? My mother says that your my cousin... I just never met you before... You and... Devi, right?" He inquired. It was the day he had asked about his family... He remembered his mother saying there were two other colts directly related to him via her sister, and gave their names, though he never thought he'd meet the two!

As soon as the word cousin left the other colt's mouth, Tembrook let out a tiny exclamation. That was it! He hadn't really forgotten after all. He had just... put it out of his memory for a little bit. Classes with the nannies always ran together into a blur, or so it seemed. Trying to pick the cousins his mother had told him about out of the crowd of other foals wasn't a pastime he really dabbled in when he could barely keep his mind absorbing the teachings that everyone was constantly telling him were so important. Shuffling his hooves, he nodded.
"That's right, that's right, me'n Devi! Devi's my brother. He's got wings, so he's kinda easy to spot sometimes." The Flock was supposed to be one big family or something, but he still regarded his own blood with a bit more excitement than the others. "You got a brother and a sister, right? I know mom told me their names, too, but..." He lowered his head, gazing up at Morkin with a sheepish grin and a small, disarming laugh. "I don't remember their names, though. Bad, huh?"
He let out another small laugh, glancing to the side. However, the laughter faded into a momentary frown. He was thinking about family now. He was thinking about... "Hey, Mori..." He leaned into the other colt as if what he was going to say next was something taboo or unheard of. "Have you... met your dad yet?" The feathered male's eyes wavered slightly, the smile he normally wore still hiding beneath the surface.

Morkin watched the other foal with a look of contemplation and curiosity. He saw the information settle and then the rest jump up into his mind. He blinked, staring some and tilted his head, before nodding a bit. Seemed that Tembrook got it now. That they were actually related. Shifting his stance, Morkin "pawed" at the ground for a second, before his ear flicked at the words. "Hm? Oh. Yeah. Rashka and Toravell." He said, before shifting his stance again.
But then Morkin got distracted. The other question really hit him home. Morkin's eyes flickered, before lowering, staring at the ground. He thought quietly. His father.... Morkin never knew him. And he wasn't sure if he wanted to know him. He rarely got to know his mother. He did follow her when he could, but most the time there was little conversation, and absolutely no interaction. He'd ask a question sometimes, but rarely would they be answered.
".... I... Don't know him, no. Mother won't tell me about him either.." He said, his eyes flickering across the ground. He didn't know anyone in his family from what he imagined. His sister rarely was around, learning with the other females. And his brother... he didn't even know where his brother was. So, he almost felt alone in a matter of speaking.

"Oh..." That was the first thing that came to mind. It was difficult to be comforting, especially since Tembrook felt the same way. He could understand how his cousin was feeling, he hadn't met his father yet, either. There were days he felt like he would never get to meet him. And although he had played as the strong one, he really loved his family. Would his dad even care? When they were finally face to face, would his father recognize and accept him? He wanted to tell Morkin that it was okay, that everything would be alright, but he couldn't. He was still just a child, too, after all.
"Me neither," he admitted, his head dipping even closer to the ground. "My dad's name is Fairweather, that's what my mom said. She also told me that when I grow up I'll get to see him. She said that all us males stay in the same place." His mother had never lied to him. There was no reason to doubt it. That... Well, that probably just made him even more nervous. In that moment, he let out a nervous laughter. Half of it was meant to hide his own inhibitions, the other half was because he could feel how heavy the situation was becoming. "So, we'll get to see our dads sometime, I bet, huh, Mori?" His grin was a bit wobbly, but genuine as he tried to make the both of them feel better.

Morkin's eyes locked on the ground, staring at it quietly. He let out a small sigh, ears flicking back, his hooves tapping the ground somewhat in thought. He tilted his head some, thinking over the situation. Meeting his father? It was true that his dad would probably know that he was his son more than his other two siblings. With the hooves, he was more likely to associate with his father than the other two. But at the same time, he wasn't sure he wanted to meet the male. His mother had never really talked about him, and he hadn't even realized that the father of the family was still in the Flock or not. It all depended on if he could find him or not.
"Huh? Oh... Sure.." Morkin whispered, before shifting a bit. He tried to send a smile back toward Tembrook, but it ended up looking a little doubtful, so he dropped it, and perked his ears some instead, looking around the small nursery. He wasn't sure just what they were going to do, but... It was better than being alone, he guessed.

A silence fell over the colt and his smile had faded mostly into nothing by now. He was beginning to feel pretty bad, having brought up a subject that seemed uncomfortable for both of them. Lowering his head, Tembrook sighed. What was he thinking? Wait, that's right, he hadn't been thinking. He wondered for a moment how he could have a mom that seemed so smart, yet prove himself so stupid over and over again. Well, there was nothing he could do but let out a loud snort, shake his head, and will the smile back. Now wasn't the time to be sad. Now was the time to have fun with his cousin before someone came and scolded them for being up so late and wandering around alone. That was the final conclusion he came to.
"Don't worry about it," he muttered. Lifting his head, he followed Morkin's gaze back towards the nursery. Ears flicked forward as if he were waiting for something to come, something that never did. Eventually, he spoke up again. "Hey, Mori. Let's do somethin', huh?" He waited only a moment to see if the other foal would respond before he continued babbling. "Maybe we could play hide-n-seek or something fun. In the dark it would be really hard to find someone. Right?" The grin had returned full-force now as he thought about playing. If nothing else, he was easily entertained.
