Glint polished off his food and sat there on the grass, looking at Machop, Gruff and Coni talking. He was always amazed how different pokémon species could understand each other, even though none of them seemed to speak the same language. It was somewhat remarkable that they could understand human speech too, although often people said that was more about talking with your heart than with your mouth; they don't understand what you're saying so much as read what you're saying from what they see in you. Machop looked like he was explaining why he was mad at the bidoof and Squirbert, with Coni cringing at the idea of confrontation and Gruff mostly keeping his opinions to himself. While he was sat there, observing the pokémon, Glint began to imagine what it would be like to travel like this with a bunch of pokémon, just challenging other trainers, exploring far-off places and learning from gym leaders all across Kanto. He tried to imagine having Machop with him on the journey, but somehow it didn't seem right. Maybe because this machop was a little overbearing. Gruff would find it hard to get along with anyone as loud and forthright as Machop. "Hey guys," Glint said. The pokémon stopped talking and looked his way. "Grawr?" "We should head out. I can see the entrance to Mt. Moon from here. Maybe we'll find your machop friends soon?" Glint wondered. "Mah~chop!" the machop frowned. He jumped up and stamped his feet. Glint figured that Machop wasn't so keen on being reunited with his friends. Maybe it wasn't amnesia after all... maybe it was frustration. It could be that he was lashing out at Squirbert and the bidoof because it was angry with something that was happening back with its friends at Mt. Moon. "Is something the matter?" Glint asked. Machop marched over and plucked Coni's pokéball from Glint's belt. "Hey--?" Glint complained. He knew he should try to understand what the pokémon was doing, though, rather than get angry at it. "Machop, machop, ma~a~a~chop," the pokémon said. He took the pokéball and hit itself on the head with it. Then he pointed at Glint. "You want me to... catch you?" Glint asked. He felt so awkward, being asked outright like that. Machop nodded. "Machop." "But why? Don't you like being free to do what you like? Don't you like living with all your friends?" "Machop machop, mah machop!" the pokémon blurted. He folded his arms. Glint figured that was a 'no'. But he'd rather hoped he'd got it wrong. He wondered if that made him a bad person, not wanting to accept Machop into his life. It surely had to be a two way thing, though. Just because Machop wanted to be caught, didn't mean Glint was obligated to catch it. "I'll do whatever I can to help, short of catching you," Glint said. "Because I'm sorry, Machop, but I don't think we'd make a very good team."

Machop threw Coni's pokéball to the ground in a huff. He stood side on to Glint, with one hand forward and the other upright, behind it. It looked like a fighting pose. "Come on," Glint said. He approached Machop and patted the crests on its sore head. "You're in no condition to fight. Let's just go to Mount Moon." Machop dropped his arms down to his sides and fell to his knees. He looked so dejected, Glint almost wanted to catch him to put a smile on his face. Being captured wouldn't solve any of Machop's problems, though. If he was captured he'd be whisked away from them, and while they might not be in his face every day, they'd forever hang over him. "Chin up. We'll face your problems together and find a resolution," Glint said. Machop bounced up, hiding his disappointment behind a tough façade. "Mah!" "That's the spirit," Glint smiled. He turned his attentions to Coni, then. She was watching Glint, slack-jawed, with a sticky brown paste of food over her tongue and around her mouth. "Odd?" "You should eat with your mouth closed, Coni," Glint said to her, easing her mouth closed with his finger. "Odd!" Coni smiled, sweet-eyed. "Now you swallow that food down and I'll wipe your face over," Glint chuckled. "Gruff, Machop, why don't you scout ahead a little way, while I sort out Coni?" "Grawr?" Gruff whined. Naturally he didn't like the idea--he wouldn't want to leave Glint's side. But Glint thought it would be good for him to go off with Machop, even if only for a minute or two. "That's right. Just make sure there are no more surprises waiting for us. See if you can find us a decent path through to the cave entrance. I'll be right here," Glint reassured Gruff. Machop was a confident one--he turned Gruff and pushed his bum to get him to leave. "Machop mah! Machop machop." "Grawr rawr rawr," Gruff complained. But he didn't resist. He walked along as Machop stopped pushing him and ran ahead to lead the way. Glint smiled, then turned back to the mucky oddish in front of him. "Now, Coni, let's clean up that face."

"This way!" Machop called. Gruff looked back for Glint, but they'd run so far now that he was out of view. "Maybe we should stop?" "It's this way. We can go up this hill and then over the other side is the gully where I used to play with my friend. The other machop are there," Machop explained. He bounced up and down and punched the air. "Your friend who was caught by a trainer?" Gruff asked. He walked forward tentatively, uncomfortable leaving Glint so far behind. Something might happen, and Coni could hardly protect him--she couldn't even feed herself. "Yes, that friend. Like I told you already, she was caught and I have to be caught too so I can find her," Machop insisted. He obviously didn't know how it worked. He seemed to think all caught pokémon went to the same place. Gruff knew otherwise. He only didn't say anything because he didn't think Machop would believe him. Wild pokémon were like that toward trainer pokémon. "Why won't your master catch me?" Machop asked. He threw a punch over Gruff's head, expecting him to flinch. Growlithe rarely flinch, though. Especially when they're not actually hit. "Where is the gully?" Gruff asked. He couldn't see one from where they were. There was just more grass. Green, green grass. "There!" Machop shouted. He pointed down to the bottom of the hill, to the right of where Gruff was looking. "It looks like they're playing toss the graveler. Look see, there." Gruff nodded. "I see it. We should tell Glint."

"There we go," Glint said, wiping Coni's mouth clean. Then out of the blue he sneezed. Coni burst out laughing. She fell back onto her bum and kicked her feet around, laughing away as though Glint had told her the best joke in the universe. "Oddish, oh-hoh~hohdish!" "Yeah yeah," Glint wiped his nose. He thought he could smell something. That was probably what had made him sneeze in the first place. "Gruff?" Machop had led Gruff quite a distance and Glint couldn't see them any more. He guessed they'd started going down the hill. "Odd oddish?" Coni asked. She and Glint both stood up, but while Glint looked westward, toward Mt. Moon, Coni looked east, back the way they'd come. "Gruff?" Glint called. He crouched down and picked Coni up, so that, one, he could turn her the right way, and two, so that she could see further. "Oddish odd!" Coni complained. Glint didn't understand what was wrong. He opened his palms out so that Coni could stand in them, and he watched her turn around and look eastward again. She could obviously sense something. "What is it?" Glint asked. He looked to the east too, and could just make out the faintest plume of smoke rising up into the sky. It looked to be coming from the woods to the north of the path they'd followed to get to the hill. It must have been one of the campers putting their fire out after lunch. "Oddish oddish!" "It's just a camp fire," Glint said. Coni shook her head. "Oddish." "What, it's not just a camp fire?" "Oddish," Coni said. She jumped down from Glint's hands and started to run back down the hill they'd just climbed. Glint jogged after her and scooped her up again. "Now you come here. We don't know what it is. But if it is a forest fire there's nothing we can do--we don't even have any water pokémon." "Oddish odd," Coni whimpered. Her eyes glistened as she looked up to Glint, mouth wobbling. "Now you," Glint sighed. But Coni's eyes just got bigger and sadder. "Odd~ish?" Glint closed his eyes and shook his head. He was such a sucker. "Gruff? Gruff!? There's a fire!"

Gruff thought he could hear Glint calling and he turned to go back. That was when he smelled smoke—burning tree and shrub smoke. "Machop, we should go back. I smell smoke." "I don't smell anything. You must be wrong. Let's go down and see if they've seen my friend," Machop said. "No, we should go back," Gruff disagreed. From what he could tell the fire was about half a mile back along the route, so it might have been one of the people who lived in a tent who'd started the fire by accident. It smelled like it was getting pretty intense though, and if someone didn't do something it might spread, burning acres of forest, destroying homes and killing wild pokémon. "But we already looked and my friend wasn't there. Maybe she came back here? Maybe she escaped from the trainer that caught her? I bet she did!" "I'm going," Gruff said. He turned away and ran back up the hill, far faster than Machop even dreamed he could run. "Where are you go~o~o~i~i~ng?" Gruff focussed on running. He made it to the top of the hill, where Glint was stood, waiting.

Glint pointed to the darkening plume of smoke. "You can get there quicker than me. Run ahead and see if you can help." "Grawr?" Gruff asked. Machop ran up the hill and jumped onto Gruff's back, like he was a horse. "Grr..." Gruff complained. Machop was probably too big, but he refused to get off. He pointed forwards. "Machop!" "You heard," Glint laughed. "Go ahead. Coni and I will catch up." Gruff wasn't best pleased, for a number of reasons. As if leaving Glint again wasn't bad enough, he had to go and tackle a fire--and carry Machop there to boot. Things were much better when they were back at the daycare.

Gruff ran down the hill and through the grass, not giving anything a chance to jump out and challenge him. Before Machop even had chance to say anything they were at the scene of a fire, where a handful of trainers were trying to save their camp and a couple of water pokémon were trying in vain to put out the flames. The fire must have spread incredibly quickly. It looked to Gruff as though it had caught everyone by surprise. One tent had already been burned to cinders, taking everything that was left inside with it, and the flames had started to work on the next one in the row. "Machy, come back!" Gruff looked at the trainer who'd shouted. She looked angry. So angry that she wasn't giving the fire the attention it clearly deserved. "Gruff ruff!" Gruff barked, hoping to get the trainer to come to her senses. When she looked at Gruff though, she went into a rage. She thrust her arm out, holding a pokéball. "Machy, you return right now!" Nothing happened. Machop jumped off Gruff's back and spread his arms wide. "Ma~a~a~a~a~" "Gruff ruff," Gruff barked. He looked up into the sky as dark clouds began to gather. It was like something out of... Wait. It was rain dance; Machop knew rain dance. "Machy? What are you doing?" the girl trainer said. Unless Gruff was mistaken she seemed to have mistaken Machop for someone else. "Machy? I said return!"

Glint ran down the hill and strode through the grass. The plume of smoke was growing wider and had at its highest point been caught the wind, causing it to drift toward Cerulean. Chances were someone would alert the fire department - if one of the campers hadn't already - and they'd come and save the day. "Odd?" Coni asked. Glint looked up and saw storm clouds gathering over the location of the fire. In fact, the clouds seemed to be forming from nothing, directly over the camp where the fire was. "Is that... rain dance?" Glint asked. "Oddish odd!" Coni replied. That seemed like a big yes. "Let's hurry and see if there's anything we can do," Glint said.

Gruff stood between Machop and the trainer. He shook his head at the girl. "Is that not my Machy? Oh pooey, where is she?" the trainer asked. She funnelled her voice with her hands, then. " Machy?" Gruff looked at the fire, which was dying down thanks to Machop's rain dance and the water guns of a buizel and an azumarill. It seemed to him that Machy - this trainer's machop - may have started the fire and then run away. That was the impression he was getting, anyway. "Mah?" "Gruff ruff," Gruff replied. He sniffed the wind to try and locate another machop nearby, but the smell of the smoke was too potent. "What is it you two? Do you know where Machy went?" Gruff shook his head to the girl. Then when he turned to Machop to ask if he knew, all he saw was a trail of dust. Machop had run into the forest. Gruff set off after him. "Gruff! Gruff ruff ruff!" "He~e~e~y," the trainer yelled. She followed too, probably hoping to find her pokémon. The two other trainers shouted to her, "Ellie, where are you going!?" "I've got a gym battle today!" Ellie wasn't for stopping, though. She chased after Gruff and replied with a yell; "I'll be right ba~a~a~ck~"

Glint ran out into the open and skidded to a stop in the dry dirt. "Hello. You're in a rush," one of the campers said. He looked calm and composed, especially for someone who'd just been fighting a fire. He returned his buizel to its pokéball, just as the other guy next to him returned his azumarill. "You lookin' for a growlithe and a machop?" "Yes," Glint nodded. "Have you seen them?" "I see that machop knows rain dance. Trade you my buizel for it," the second guy said. Neither he nor his friend seemed to want to tell Glint which way Gruff had gone. "Where are they?" Glint pressed. "I'm Harry, this is Rhine," the first guy said, motioning to his friend. "Our companion ran off after your pokémon. We'd better go after her, else we'll likely never see her again; she's a bit ditzy, and prone to getting lost." "The name's Glint. This is Coni. And I think I should say, that machop isn't mine. It's accompanying me to Mount Moon, but I've never caught it," Glint explained. "So I can catch it?" Rhine asked. Glint nodded. "I think it might like that." Rhine led the way, having his vigoroth cut down overgrowth that blocked the path, with Glint and Harry following. "Are you sure this is the right way?" Glint asked. "If she ran this path, she'd have been caught up in the vines. It stands to reason this can't be the path she took otherwise we would have found her by now," Harry agreed. Rhine was having too much fun to pay any real attention, though. "She went this way, so we'll bump into her. With her big mouth how can we miss her?" "She isn't that loud," Harry argued. "No, but she has a big mouth," Rhine said. Glint didn't get it. He held Coni closer as the forest got darker. Overhead the branches were thickening up, blocking out the sunlight. If it got any cloudier it might be impossible to go on. Hopefully that was just the lingering effects of rain dance. "They can't be much further," Rhine said. "Vigoroth, it's clearin' up a little. Go ahead and see if you can find anythin'." "You got any flying types you can send to search?" Harry asked. Glint shook his head, as worry started to set in. "No. I only have Gruff."

Glint followed Harry and Rhine through the forest and out into a clearing where there was a river, running back toward Cerulean, with a jetty that looked like it'd fall apart if anyone tried to walk along it. "Where did they go?" Glint asked. Rhine and Harry looked around, confused. They didn't inspire Glint with confidence. "They must've come this way," Rhine said. "My vigoroth came this way, so this is the way Ellie came too." Glint nodded. He tried to figure out for himself what had happened. Rhine had faith in his vigoroth, so Glint figured he should too. But, if it really had followed Gruff and the others this way, they must have vanished into thin air. Because one thing was certain--Gruff would not go near that water. "There must have been a boat," Harry said. Glint still didn't think Gruff would have gone near the water. But a boat seemed like the most likely explanation.

"So do you have any water pokémon we can use to swim up the river?" Harry asked. Gruff was at pains to repeat himself. "No, I only have Gruff." "Ain't much of a trainer, are you?" Rhine asked, snorting. Like he thought he was better than Glint just because he had more pokémon. "I'm not anything of a trainer. I'm a breeder," Glint explained. "Wait," Harry said. He pulled a pad out of his breast pocket and flipped through the pages. "Glint Hatcher? That's you?" Glint frowned, surprised that these strangers would know who he was. He nodded. "That's me. Why?" "I wonder if you might look at my riolu. He won't eat what I give him--he goes berry picking and foraging for grubs instead," Harry said. "Sorry, but can we find my pokémon first? Your friend might be in trouble," Glint replied. He stepped into the river, at a shallow point, and looked westward. He didn't know what made them think Ellie would have gone up stream. That would have taken a lot of effort, to row against the current. Even if it was a slow one. "She'll be perfectly fine," Harry said. "Well maybe. But Gruff - my growlithe - does not like water. You can imagine why. Finding him is my priority," Glint argued. "Which way were you headed? Into Mount Moon or towards Cerulean?" "Cerulean. I've got a gym challenge waitin'," Rhine boasted. "So what makes you think Ellie headed up stream?" Glint asked Harry. "She was chasing her machop, which seemed reluctant to go with her, even after she caught it. It seemed to want to stay with its friends, which live just outside Mount Moon. I expect her machop is trying to return there. Is that an acceptable conclusion, or have you got a better idea?" Harry complained in response. "I think I know one of those machop," Glint said. He started to run back through the forest, toward the camp. "Come with me!" Harry huffed, "why are we going back?" "Because it'll be quicker and easier than trying to swim up stream," Glint called back. He ran through the undergrowth, dodging around thistles and jumping over roots. "Well yes, but..." Harry tried to object. He couldn't think of a reason not to go back, though. "But nothing," Rhine laughed. "Let's go!"

"Machy~y~y~y~y?" Ellie called. Her machop was in the boat in front, rowing like an olympic kayaker. Ellie was rowing as hard as she could, but her arms were piddly compared to Machy's and she just couldn't keep up. "Mah, machop," Machop said. He tried to snatch the ores from Ellie but she stubbornly held on. "Mah!" "Let go!" Ellie screeched. "I caught that machop fair and square so tough luck. She's coming with me. We'll train together and one day we'll fight Karen of the Elite Four." Gruff wanted to bark, to try and get Ellie's attention, but he was petrified. He never should have allowed Machop to convince him to get in the boat. Now they were surrounded by rushing water. There was nowhere to go. Gruff stayed as still as he could, right in the middle of the rocking boat. "Hey," Ellie snapped at Machop. One of the oars flew out of her hand as the pokémon pulled on it. It splashed into the water and floated away. "Mah!" Machop gasped. "Machop mah mah mahcop!" Gruff shook his head. There was no way in a million years he was going to jump into the water to get that oar back. If anyone should jump in it was Machop. "Gruff ruff ruff," Gruff said. "You two," Ellie growled. She threw the second oar down to the floor of the little boat and folded her arms in a huff. "Why are you chasing me anyway?" Gruff wished he could explain, but obviously humans don't understand pokémon speak, and pokémon can't speak human. "Grawr..." "Machop mah," Machop said. He picked up the oar and started to row. But with only one oar, they didn't make any progress. The river swept them back toward Cerulean. It swept them further and further away from Glint.

Glint ran up the hill again, followed by Rhine and Harry. He'd done so much running back and forth he expected he'd probably lost a couple of pounds. Gran was going to have a fit when she saw him--she thought he was too thin already. "How do you run so fast?" Rhine huffed. "I'm used to it," Glint replied. "He delivers pokémon to people all across the region," Harry explained to Rhine. "He probably runs everywhere." "No, actually I have a bike. Or rather, I had a bike,." "I bet you wish you had it now," Rhine panted. "Where are we going?" Harry asked. Glint was happier when he was on his own, just him and his pokémon. Other trainers were strange. "You know, you're strange, Glint," Rhine said. Glint came to a stop at the top of the hill and put his hands on his hips. Both Harry and Rhine were arched over, hands on knees. "He's not strange," Harry panted. "He just doesn't like you." "Whoa," Glint chuckled, "I just want to get Gruff back. We have to find Ellie, Gruff and Machop." "You mean Machy," Rhine said. "Ellie's machop's called Machy." "Two machops, then. Either way, you said they were probably headed up here. Now are you two ready or do you need more of a rest?" Glint asked. "Wha?" Rhine gasped. He pointed down the hill. "Do you see that thing we just ran up? Give us a minute, pal." "Glint is right, Rhine. We should hurry to find Ellie. You want to get to your gym battle, don't you?" Harry asked. He stood upright and sucked in a couple more deep breaths. "Of course, but--" Rhine moaned. "And if your vigoroth were missing you'd be in just as much of a hurry to find him as Glint is to find his growlithe," Harry said. "Exactly. I'm going on ahead. You'll probably be able to see me. Catch your breath, then catch up with me," Glint said. In minutes Glint was bounding down the hill toward a sandy gully, where a bunch of machop were tossing boulders around for exercise. From a distance it didn't look like any of them had a bandana on, so the machop who'd been following Glint wasn't amongst them. But he'd be there soon, and with Gruff too. Then, finally, they'd be able to get into and through Mt. Moon, and give Coni to her trainer. First things first, Glint had to get Gruff back.
