A road running South of Saffron City. This is the southern part of the route closest to Saffron City. It's also the location of the Pokémon Day Care and the Underground Path that connects Route 5 to Route 6 bypassing the city.

By the time the sun peeked over the mountains in the east Glint had already checked on the eggs stored in hutches one through eleven and was on his way to hutch twelve. Despite the early morning cold Gruff was his attentive self, first looking in on the slugma nests under each hutch, then going inside to Glint and the eggs.
"Looks like it's going to be a beautiful day, Gruff," Glint said. There were a few swathes of cloud overhead, drifting slowly to the north, but the horizon was blue, east, south and west.
The main building of the daycare was at the bottom of the hill that led up to Cerulean City and as such the garden at the rear - where the hutches were - was on an incline. Gran and Grampa always said that Glint should start at the top of the garden and work his way back to the house, but Glint liked to start at hutch one and work his way up to hutch twelve. He liked to think that Gruff preferred that too.
"Graw?"
"Yeah, I think I saw it too. Looked like a pulse of light, huh?" Glint said. He'd just seen something from the crack under the hutch's door, but he didn't really pay it any mind until Gruff reacted. At a guess he'd have said it was the Abra egg, since that one had been there the longest. The only way to find out was to go inside, though.
"Graw," Gruff said. He ran on ahead, up the ramp and through the flap in the wooden door.
Glint picked up his pace too, finding the key for the hutch on his chain and turning it right side up, ready to slot into the lock.
"Glint?" a call came from the house.
Glint turned back and looked down the hill. Grampa was there, waving an arm. He probably saw on the hatchery monitor which egg was glowing. Glint cupped his hands around his mouth to funnel his voice. "Is it Abra?"
"Sure is. Bring it on down here," Grampa called.
Glint nodded knowingly. He'd have been surprised if it was any of the other eggs--most of them had only been at the daycare for a couple of weeks. It must have been nearly two months since the Abra egg was dropped off. "Give me a few minutes. I'll see you inside."
Gruff popped his head out of the flap in the door and Glint could tell straight away that he was distressed. Something must have been wrong with the Abra egg. "Gruff, ruff!"
Glint tried not to panic as he skipped up the ramp, unlocked the door, and rushed inside.

Glint looked around the dimly-lit hutch and saw Gruff sat next to the left-hand rack, looking up at the Abra egg. It didn't seem to him that there was anything wrong, but Gruff wouldn't have got worked up if everything was fine.
"What's wrong, Gruff? There something the matter with Abra?"
"Ruff, gruff," Gruff replied. He must have been able to hear or smell something that Glint couldn't. It must have been serious.
Glint approached the egg and pressed the straw around it down, so that he could study the shell carefully. "I don't see any cracks yet. Besides, the monitor would have sounded and woken us up if it reached stage three of hatching. It looks like it's still stage one to me."
"Gruff. Gruff ruff," Gruff said.
"Do you think Abra's in pain? Some pokémon have a build-up of energy when they're late hatching, but I've never heard of it in psychic types."
Gruff nudged Glint with his nose. He really was sure that there was something wrong.
"Okay, let's get it to the house. Grampa will know what's the matter."
"Gruff, ruff."

"Grampa? Gruff says there's something wrong with Abra," Glint said. He peered into the lounge, then into the daycare's lobby. None of the lights were on in there yet since it was still early.
Gruff headed straight through to the clinic, so Glint followed him. Usually, when they were looking for someone, Gruff found them without any trouble. It was the same with Glint's keys and pokégear--they were never lost for long.
"What's that you said?" Grampa called.
Glint walked into the clinic and set the egg down on the table, in the centre of the room. Grampa had just finished up washing his hands, so he was ready to handle the egg.
"Gruff says there's something wrong with Abra," Glint repeated. "I think maybe there's a build-up of energy, since the egg looks fine."
"Mm, let me see, there," Grampa said. He stepped up to the table and picked the egg up from inside the container.
Glint didn't like the expression on Grampa's face. Usually he was quite bubbly, but he seemed rather serious as he studied the egg. Glint rubbed his hands together nervously. "Should I get Gran?"
Grampa nodded sternly, still studying the egg. "Mm, I think you should."

"Now what's all this fuss?" Gran asked. She followed Glint into the clinic, where Grampa was looking down on the egg, which was back in its straw-filled container.
"I'm stumped," Grampa said. "Glint thinks this Abra is suffering from a build-up of psychic energy. What do you say?"
Gran brushed past Glint, putting a hand on his shoulder as she went. She approached the table then leaned in to look at the egg inside the container.
"It was just a guess, really," Glint interrupted.
Gran looked at him and smiled. "It's called intuition, m'boy. You get it from me, you know."
"Intuition?" Glint wondered. But Gran turned away again, to speak to Grampa.
"That's what it is; this little one doesn't want to hatch, so it's storing up a lot of psychic energy that would usually be released as it moves around. I was worried something like this might happen."
"Mm. Then there's only one thing for it," Grampa said.
"What's that?" Glint asked. He knew that with electric types you could release the energy using a couple of paper clips, an industrial-strength electrical wire and a few batteries. But psychic types were a whole different story.
"We return it to its owner. She can solve this sort of problem much more easily than us," Gran said.
"But how? And is that really right? People are relying on us to look after their eggs and make sure the pokémon they leave with us are healthy and happy. Can we really just take this pokémon back to its trainer and tell them to help it themselves?" Glint argued.
"Mm. A lot to learn, still," Grampa sighed.
"A lot to learn," Gran agreed.
"Graw?" Gruff growled, tilting his head to the right.
Glint shrugged to the growlithe, since he didn't know what they meant either. He didn't see how he could be wrong--it was their job to look after pokémon. Sending one back to its owner at the first sign of trouble was like giving up. They might as well not take the pokémon at all.
"Kiki?" Grampa called.
The crobat appeared in the doorway in a flash--as though it had been waiting close by. "Khee."
"Fetch Glint his satchel, won't you?" Grampa said. "He's got an emergency errand to run."

Before Glint really knew where he was going and what he was doing, Gran and Grampa had hooked straps over his shoulders, dropped a sandwich and flask into his satchel, pushed the egg container into his torso and guided him down the corridor and through the lobby to the exit.
The door shut, leaving Glint holding the egg container to his chest with his left hand and a scrap of paper in his right. The flap in the door squeaked as Gruff pushed it open with his nose and stepped out into the daylight.
"Graw?"
Glint scrunched up the paper in his hand, staring beyond the wooden gate at the end of the garden path, to the towering buildings of Saffron City.
When Gruff pawed at his shin Glint looked down. "Oh, I don't know. You know what I mean though when I say we shouldn't just send the egg back, don't you Gruff?"
Gruff looked up at the egg, as Glint held it out from his torso a little. If it had glowed again since being out of the hutch, neither of them had seen it. Gruff was sure that there was something wrong though, and most problems don't just fix themselves. Even though the egg seemed fine, that was no reason to think the little Abra inside was all better. If Gran and Grampa said to take it back to its owner, that must have been the best thing to do. Whether Glint liked it or not.

Glint strapped the egg container into the safety box on the back of his bicycle and made his way out to the quiet road that ran down from Cerulean, straight into the heart of Saffron. He stuffed the scrap of paper with the address on into his pocket and strapped on his helmet.
"Ready for a run, Gruff?"
"Graw," Gruff nodded. As Glint mounted his bike and pushed off, Gruff followed alongside. Even when Glint started to peddle, going through the gears, Gruff made light work of keeping up.
"We'll be there in no time," Glint said. "I just hope this little thing's trainer has the first idea of what to do to help it."

Mezame bent down putting the egg container on the floor and covered her head as Starly flew over to Glint. She peered out behind her arm and saw the Pokémon pecking contently at the food in Glint's hand and with a deep sigh of relief sat down on the floor. Feeling calmer Mezame stood up taking the egg and bravely went over to watch the Pokémon eat the food.

Mezame shook her head at Glint. "It's not that I don't like it." She explained. "I've just not had great experiences with flying types. They're scary!" She continued to watch the harmless Starly eating out of Glint's hand. "Even though I caught Starly by accident, this pokémon helped me save this egg. It cares about it just like I do. So we're not so different."

Sternly, Mezame made a fist with her free hand and glared into Glint's eyes with determination. "I don't want to be cooped up in doors any more. I wanna go on a journey and make friends with Pokémon!" She dropped her arm limply and sighed looking down at the floor. "I just need to get over my stupid fears first."

"Staaaarly star!" Starly said and hopped along Glints hand closer to Mezame. She flinched but relaxed when the Pokémon didn't come any closer. Mezame laughed a little.

"Thanks Starly" She said awkwardly scratching the back of her head.

User ImageUser Image"I think Starly agrees with you. I think it wants to travel too," Glint said. It wasn't often you saw a lone starly, and in Glint's experience, when one did go off on its own it was because it was looking for a trainer. Maybe not consciously, but, it was like something was drawing them closer to trainers. And it wasn't just starly--it happened with all kinds of pokémon. A lot were happy in the wild, but some seemed to want to be caught. The starly in his hand was one of the latter group.
"And you know, the more time you spend together, the more you'll grow used to Starly. I can see you as a bird pokémon trainer yet," Glint said.
Gruff looked up at Glint, as though he knew it was nonsense.
"Or, maybe not. I don't know. What would you want to do? Just travel around? Where would you go?" Glint asked. He didn't know what he'd do. He was too tied up in his routine. Without pokémon and eggs to take care of, he'd be lost.

User ImageMezame nodded and smiled. "I think you're right." She set off walking again as she thought about Glints last question. Mezame hadn't even thought that far ahead, where would she go? What would she do? Mezame shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know." She said sadly looking up at the sky. "I just know that my parents would never let me keep a Pokémon. They're really set against them. I've gotta take fate into my own hands and create my own dreams or I'll never be happy." Though it was simple in theory Mezame didn't really know how it would work out. Would travelling aimlessly be a good idea?

"I don't think it matters" Mezame said randomly after being quiet for a while. "Maybe I'll find my place if I do just travel around. At the very least I'll get to experience new things and learn a whole bunch of new stuff. Can only learn so much doing the same thing every day right?" She asked looking over at Glint.

User ImageUser ImageGlint thought about it a little and nodded. He supposed it was true. If you never go anywhere new or do anything differently, you don't challenge yourself. You don't learn. But Glint didn't want to think too much about that. "We're happy, right Gruff?"
"Gruff ruff," Gruff replied. He sounded content enough. But then, all he wanted was to be around Glint. That's all he really needed--his best friend.
"Anyway, that egg. Do you want to know what it is?" Glint asked. He looked to Mezame, then remembered that she didn't know what a growlithe was. She thought Gruff was a species rather than a name. Even if Glint did tell her what her egg was, she wouldn't have a clue what he meant. She wouldn't know what it looked like or what moves it could do, or even what to feed it. She needed a lot of advice if she was going to get anywhere on her journey.
Glint hoped that Gran and Grampa would help her out. He didn't like the idea of getting caught up in her ambitions of travelling.

"Hrm." Was all Mezame could say in response. Glint hadn't agreed with her about new experiences. "Well I think life would be boring without a little adventure." She said running ahead of him and looking back to stick her tongue out at him childishly. "Neeer!" She laughed. "Come on Starly!" Mezame called to her Pokémon as she ran off ahead.

"Starly!" The Pokémon flew after her happily and circled her again as it'd done before. Mezame wasn't scared this time, that is until the Starly landed on her head once again.

"AIEE! Get offa me!" Mezame squealed batting at her head.

Glint stopped walking and scratched his head. He didn't get it. He thought people made their own adventures, wherever they were. He certainly didn't need to travel anywhere to have fun.
"Come on, Gruff," he said. He climbed onto his bike and started to peddle up the hill, toward the daycare.
In a moment Glint and Gruff breezed past Mezame and her starly.
"Graw-awrrrrr," Gruff howled back to the girl as she fell further and further behind. She'd have to pick up her pace if she wanted to keep Glint in sight. And if she was going to go on an adventure, she'd probably have to get used to the running.
"Come on Mezame!" Glint shouted. "It's just up ahead!"

Mezame was too busy yelling at her Starly to notice Glint and Gruff had sped past her. "Cut it out, Starly! You know that creeps me out- stop it!" She looked around for Glint. "Hey aren't you gonna hel- HEY!" She yelled angrily as she realised he'd gone off without her. Starly flew off her head and hovered in the air next to her seeming to shrug it's wings in mid air. "What's with that guy anyway?" She asked it.

"Star starly star." The pokémon said.

"Hmm." Mezame agreed. "C'mon lets get going."

Mezame walked with Starly flying at her side up over the hill to see Glint waiting for her at what she assumed was the Day Care.

Glint leaned his bicycle up against the fence and waited at the gate for Mezame to catch up. Once she was in sight she probably realised they'd reached the daycare, so Glint headed inside.

"That was quick, Glint," Gran said. She was at the counter, sat on her stool, waiting for the first customer of the day.
"Yeah. She was a... anyway, I was jumped by this strange girl. She's all soggy wet, and she doesn't know the first thing about pokémon, but she's got this egg.
"Hmm? An egg you say?"
"Yeah. You'll see--she must be halfway up the hill now. Can you talk to her? I'm going to check on hutch twelve again. I didn't do it properly this morning because I was too focused on Abra."
"Don't you want to talk to her yourself?" Gran asked. She probably realised that Glint was shaken.
"No thanks. I already tried but I don't know what she should do. You'll know better than me," Glint said. He didn't give it another second after that--he ran behind the counter and through to the living area at the back of the building.

Truth was Glint half wanted to go on a journey himself, but he was scared to. Not scared of being out there alone or not knowing where to go first or not knowing what to do, but scared of what might go wrong, and whether or not he'd be able to handle it when it did.
"I don't know Gruff. We're happy enough here, right? We're learning new things. We're on our way to becoming good breeders," Glint said.
Gruff sat next to him, as he leaned up against the wall in the hallway.
"You know, when I was your age--"
Glint jumped.
Grampa walked out from the clinic with a rattata in his arms. "Sorry to startle you, Glint. I was just thinking, when I was your age, I went off on a journey. I was helping my grandparents at the daycare, but there were new pokémon being discovered all the time and I couldn't learn everything from my own back yard."
Glint let his head drop. He didn't want everyone to know he was unsettled. But he guessed he couldn't hide it from his grandparents or Gruff. They all knew him too well.
"Thanks, Grampa. I'll think about it," Glint said. Then he trundled toward the back door, to go check on the other eggs in hutch twelve.

User ImageUser ImageMezame watched Glint walk into the Day Care Centre and confirmed her suspicion it was the place. "Guess he doesn't like me much huh Starly?"

"Staaarly starly."

Mezame dug around in her pocket for Starly's Pokéball. "You better come back in here." She held the ball out to the Pokémon. Nothing happened. Starly looked at her like it didn't know what she expected. Mezame was confused. "C'mon get in." Starly cocked it's head in equal confusion. "Do I have to throw it at you again to get you to return?" The Pokéball opened and Starly was zapped back inside. Mezame shrugged and put the Pokéball back in her pocket and headed inside the Day Care.

Mezame wasn't sure what to expect but she was greeted by an older lady at a counter. "My, you are a bit soggy aren't you?" The day care lady asked with a light laugh.

"Uh, yeah." Mezame said scratching the back of her head. "It's a long story... Anyway" Mezame put the egg container on the counter "I saved this egg today, it fell out of a tree. Glint said it's definitely not a bird Pokémon, so it shouldn't have been in a tree right?"

"No indeed." The day care lady said nodding in agreement. "you're responsible for this egg now then?" It was more of a statement than a question.

"I guess so..." Mezame agreed staring thoughtfully at the egg. "But I don't know the first thing about Pokémon, let alone Pokémon eggs."

"Well we can raise it for you. However, I think you'll be perfectly capable of doing it yourself. We do charge a fee after all. But lets have a look at it." She took the egg out and looked it over.

"Waah, I can't pay for day care!" Mezame cried in dismay. The day care lady didn't reply, she kept looking over the egg, feeling it in different places and putting it on a weighing scale noting the numbers it gave. Then she put it back in the container.

"Well it's perfectly healthy" The day care lady said with a smile. "Probably lucky you caught it." She said nodding. "Now, it's pretty simple, it requires some time and attention but it's otherwise easy to raise an egg. Handle it gently and make sure it stays warm at all times. The container should help with that but still, don't go leaving it out in the cold or something silly like that. Wait there."

The day care lady disappeared into the back and came back holding a soft cloth and a Pokéball. "Use this Pokéball to catch the Pokémon when it hatches." She attached the Pokéball to the egg container. "Use this Pokémon egg cloth to rub the egg down at least twice a day. It'll keep it clean as well as warm the egg but also it will get the Pokémon inside the egg accustomed to people. If you treat it well it may even recognise you when it hatches."

Mezame was overwhelmed with infomation, she nodded as the old lady spoke trying to keep up and remember everything she was told. "Here give it a try." The day care lady opened the egg container and passed the egg and the cloth to Mezame. "Rub it gently but thoroughly." Mezame did as she was told. "Good! Make sure you don't miss a spot."

Mezame smiled as she cared for her egg and started to day dream about what kind of Pokémon was inside.

Glint headed up the hill in the garden with Gruff walking alongside, looking up at him with concern.
"We're both twenty-two, Gruff. Nearly a quarter of a century old, and what have we got to show for it?"
"Grawr?" Gruff puzzled. "Gruff ruff ruff."
"Yeah, we have each other, sure. But I mean, what have we achieved?"
"Grawr. Ruff, grawr-ruff."
Glint shrugged. The had hatched and raised lots of pokémon, and they'd looked after plenty more, but really that was mostly Gran and Grampa. Glint just picked up the loose ends and tied them off. Anyone could do it.
"Come on, Gruff. Let's just get back to work," Glint huffed. He continued up the hill, with his sights set on hutch twelve.

Glint went into the hutch and started looking over the eggs on the left-hand rack. He stroked each one as he passed them, checking for any obvious signs of problems. Thankfully they all seemed fine. Or at least, all except for one. Glint crouched down to one egg that had a crack down the centre. That was not good. Not at all.
"Gruff, fetch me a medical kit!" Glint shouted. He grabbed a sheet from a hook on the wall and hurriedly sat down with his knees crossed.
Outside Gruff barked and ran off to the house to get the box Glint needed. He'd be back within a minute, probably with Grampa in tow.
Glint lay the sheet out on his lap and carefully picked up the cracked egg. The shell shifted in his hands, which meant that it wasn't just a surface crack. There was probably only a small section holding the big piece of cracked shell in place.
Glint placed the egg down in the sheet and looked it over to find where the crack ended. Sometimes, if they were lucky, it could be glued shut without causing the pokémon inside any distress. Unfortunately, the crack was severe. Glint knew that if he tried to seal it shut again, it would give way completely. The only thing to do was to open the egg and hope the pokémon had lived through the ordeal.
The sound of Gruff running up the ramp turned Glint's head. "Hey, Gruff. I need a pair of tweezers."
Gruff placed the green medical box next to Glint, then walked around to his front, to peek over his knees at the egg. "Grawr?"
Glint took the tweezers from the box. He carefully manoeuvred them in his hand, then used them to take careful hold of the broken piece of shell. He held his breath.
Gruff whimpered. He looked up at Glint with big, sad eyes.
Glint tried to concentrate on the egg. He lifted the piece of shell and bent it up until it snapped away. Inside there was a dark blue ball. It had two little feet at one end and a bunch of withered leaves at the other.
