Spring had arrived in the city of Jiang Xia. Smoke curled from the chimneys of the blacksmith, and the occasional flock of birds or handful of flower petals drifted by on the spring breeze. Flickers on the map indicated distant conflicts, but for the time being, the immediate area was safe and peaceful. Lu Su was taking a break from overseeing work in the fields to rest at home, gently serenaded by the song of a single Chinese fiddle. A visitor arrived while he rested, and his servant went to seek him out.
Quote:
Master Lu Su, Lord Sun Quan is here to see you. Shall I see him in?
==> Yes, please, and prepare some tea for us.
= No, tell him to return another day.

The servant awaited his reply, as Ian dozed in the chair facing the television. The controller rested on his leg, his fingers still resting lightly on the buttons. A melted ice pack rested limply on the floor beside his chair, and a small table had been dragged over to leave a mug and teapot; a plate of crumbs; a cell phone; and an orange prescription bottle close at hand for the boy.

Though he had had a few days to recover already, Ian still looked worse for the wear, covered in bruises. There would be lots of homework for him to catch up on, too, but he was trying not to think about that, at least. Certainly not while he was napping.

There was a knock at the door, gentle at first, but it became a little more insistent when Ian did not immediately respond. The boy stirred and winced a little as he sat up, just in time to see his mom opening the door.

"Huh?" he mumbled, rubbing an eye.

While not every teacher's dream student, Vanessa was the sort of girl who volunteered to take a classmate their homework after hours. It pleased her, to help. It pleased her, to be made useful.

Plus, it gave her a good excuse to not work on her own assignments.

Smiling softly, cradling the (mostly) illegible notes she'd so thoughtfully made for Ian, Vanessa followed Mrs. Chen from their front door to the room where Ian rested. They were familiar with one another, but not terribly close. From the little time that she'd spent with Ian, Vanessa had learned that he was generally a quiet boy.

And very nice.

"Hello, Ian!" She called from behind Mrs. Chen, before the woman had a chance to announce her, and tried to peer around the door at the same time. "It's Vanessa. I've brought you your homework!"

"... Huh?" he asked again, sitting upright. The video game controller slipped from his lap, but the cord was looped around his leg somehow, and so it dangled from the end of its cord without hitting the carpet. Blinking, he lowered his hand and forced a small smile as his classmate came into focus.

"Oh, hey," Ian offered in true greeting this time, though it sounded about as tired as he looked. "Sorry, the stuff they gave me for pain puts me right to sleep." A few seconds later, he had processed the rest of what Vanessa had said. "Oh, homework?" That sounded both tired and slightly disappointed.

Nobody had told Vanessa what, exactly, had kept Ian from attending school that day. She'd assumed he'd come down with a nasty case of the sniffles, or that he'd possibly just pretended to be sick because he hadn't finished an English essay on time.

It wasn't unusual.

So when Mrs. Chen let her inside and she saw the bruises on his arms the first time, Vanessa gasped.

"Oh my gosh, Ian!" Her eyes were as wide as saucers. Vanessa took a seat nearby, and was careful not to disturb him as she moved. When she spoke next, it was in a loud whisper. She was trying to be considerate.

"Did you get beat up?"

"Twice," Ian replied with a wry laugh, most of the humor coming from the medication in his system. "Once by a monster and once by a girl with a big stick. First time was a couple days ago, though."

He shifted a little, pushing himself up straighter in the chair, then leaned over to grab his glass of water. "How have you been? Lots of scary monsters. And people. Are you okay?" The boy looked over at her and smiled weakly, taking a sip of water, then replacing the glass on the table before pushing his glasses up his nose a little.
"Aren't there supposed to be superheroes out there in the city now? I've seen them on the news...."

It was difficult for Vanessa, sometimes, to remember that not everybody needed to know she was a super hero. As Super Van, she had had a difficult time keeping her identity secret. As Vulcan? Nothing had changed.

Well, that wasn't exactly true. Vulcan was stronger than Super Van. Vulcan was faster than Super Van. Vulcan was tough, and didn't need to hide behind Super Van's sunglasses. Except-- the lives and safety of her friends and family depended on Vulcan's anonymity.

Vanessa understood this. Vanessa cared, very much, about this. She just… forgot, occasionally.

"There are superheroes!" She exclaimed, heart twanging painfully for Ian. He was hurt. He was beaten, and bruised, and nobody, it seemed, had been there to save him. She met his ruby gaze with her golden stare. "I'm so sorry that this happened to you."

It was so kind of him to bother with niceties, after everything he'd been through, that Vanessa couldn't help smiling.

"I'm fine," she whispered, loudly again, "thank you for asking. Can you tell me anything more about the girl that beat you up? What did she look like?"

Ian bore no real grudge that no one had been there to save him. He always tried to lie low and avoid notice, and it had served him thus far. He had just gotten unlucky. Twice in a row. He just dearly hoped that it would not happen again.

He blinked slowly and sighed, trying to remember the woman with the pointed stave. "Uhh, she wore brown and she had short hair," the boy replied at length, then slowly sat up and got up out of his chair. "She didn't introduce herself or anything. She looked older than me, though." Turning to face Vanessa again, he gingerly held his right arm in his left. "Really disturbingly perky, too. Like I was doing a favor being there for her to beat up."

If Vanessa got her way, poor Ian would never have to worry about being hurt again. She smiled warmly at her classmate, eyes shining with no small amount of concern, and vowed to herself that she would protect him. Ian probably had never hurt so much as a fly in his whole life! It wasn't fair, that he would be subjected to such treatment.

There were people who did far worse, in the world, and reaped rewards for it.

"Brown clothes," she repeated Ian's description of his attacker, and stored it in her memory for later. "Short hair. Old and disturbing, but perky too."

Vanessa eyed the way Ian favoured his right arm, thought that he really ought to sit back down, and said, "Is there something I can get for you?"

Ian was not really in the right headspace to discuss karma, either, but he did appreciate that his classmate cared. Somewhere under all of the painkillers.

He nodded slowly in confirmation as she repeated what he had told her, then blinked as his vision swam a little. "Yeah. Well, not old, but older than me."

Then he laughed weakly. "Maybe take the homework away, but I really should get it done." Ian's head lolled to one side as he studied what he had on his table. "I guess I'm good for right now. Oh, you can flip off the game and the TV after I save, if you want." The volume was down, and the only sound coming from it for the moment was a bit of Chinese fiddle music. He squirmed to try to get the game controller, or the cord, where it was draped over his leg, which ever came into reach first.

"Er, I guess if you could grab that for me first, please?" Ian grinned sheepishly at Vanessa.

"Not old, but older." Vanessa clarified with a thoughtful nod, and submitted this mostly vague description to her memory. She suspected that Ian had been the victim of a Negaverse attack, but was not familiar with any agents that matched the picture he'd painted in her head.

"Did she have anything that made her stand out?" Vanessa considered Ian's injuries, recalled that usually Negaverse agents fought with weapons, and suddenly brightened. "What did she hit you with, Ian?"

If he could not give her any distinguishing features, this information would help. Surely.

Vanessa returned his smile good-naturedly, though hers was not at all as sheepish as his, and collected the controller for him. She placed it gingerly in his hand and said, "There you are."

"I've got loads of homework myself," she spoke lightly, shrugging, and turned towards the television. "What game is that?"

The boy's face twisted up in disgust at her question regarding weaponry. "It was like a stick or something. Quarterstaff thing, except sort of sharpened at the ends. Not with metal like a spear, but still pointy enough to really hurt." He winced a little, squirming as he reached to take the game controller from her, and worked his injured shoulder slightly.

"Thank you," Ian replied, then brightened visibly as the conversation turned to the game. "Oh, it's uh, Romance of the Three Kingdoms Ten." He saved his progress, then brought up the map of China to show her. The old provinces were color-coded, with a key to indicate what warlord held each territory. The one that was presumably the home province of Ian's own character was highlighted.

"Three Kingdoms China, around like, 215AD right now," he told her, repeating the date information that was already displayed in the corner of the screen. "It's like ... RPG-thing, with some turn-based strategy. You basically have to take over all of China, or at least help your commander do it...." Then Ian trailed off, bringing the game back to the view of his character's portrait, the list of locations in the city of Jiang Xia, and the panorama of the town itself.

"Just a thing I like," he added dismissively.

It occurred to Vanessa too late that further questions about what had happened to him might only serve to frustrate Ian. He had suffered a great trauma. It was cruel of her to pursue more information, when he was already so injured.

Vanessa absorbed the last of the information with a quiet nod, choosing not to repeat it this time, and settled onto the floor in front of the television. She sat near Ian's feet, and watched as he explained to her the mechanics of his game.

Video games and Playstations had always fascinated Vanessa, who'd never been able to afford anything of the sort. This didn't mean she'd never played-- only that she'd had to abuse every possible opportunity outside of her home.

Needless to say, as a player, she was less than satisfactory. Still she caught on quickly to the things that Ian said, golden eyes flickering across the screen as he switched from view to view to view.

"So you get to shoot things, hey?"

Vanessa smiled.

"That's very cool."

"Oh, no, not really," he replied. "Or, I don't do the shooting. I get a whole unit of troops in battle, though," Ian went on to clarify. "Every general gets a unit. And usually I pick archers for myself, but it's not like, first-person shooting."

He rubbed his eye as he quit the game back to the title screen, then struggled up out of the chair. "Aah, I should probably get up and move around a little now anyway." Yawning, he stretched with his uninjured arm, then leaned down to grab a ziplock bag of water off of the floor.

The boy smiled tiredly to Vanessa. "Thanks again for coming by with my homework. I do really appreciate it." Ian sighed heavily, pinching the top corners of the bag between two fingers and tilting it back and forth to watch the water swish from side to side. "I'll show my appreciation by not getting beaten up again, I promise," he added with a weak laugh.

"Can I get you anything while you're here? I don't want to keep you too long, but if you need anything to drink or eat, we've got some things."

"It's no problem!" Vanessa insisted with a smile, and twisted where she sat on the floor in order to face Ian. She was genuinely disappointed when he discontinued the explanation of his game, but would not deign to complain. Ian was very obviously tired. Vanessa might not have been the sharpest knife in the drawer, but she was more than capable of recognizing exhaustion when she saw it.

Ian had suffered, at the vicious hands of a short-haired and perky villain. Of course he wouldn't be much interested in conversation. Of course he would be weary.

"I'm always here to help," she stood slowly, dusted off the seat of her shorts, and then fixed Ian with her golden stare. "I'm fine. I'm a little thirsty, but I can just have some milk or something when I get home. Do you have my number? I should give it to you, if you don't already, and then you can call me if you're ever in trouble like that again."

Vanessa could not tell Ian how, exactly, she intended to help him. But the faith she demonstrated in herself and her ability to protect him was unshakeable.

"Oh, sure," he replied, one palm still to his eye as his blood pressure adjusted to his standing up. When Ian was confident he could turn his head without too much dizziness (damn these pills), he looked around in search of his phone, then grinned sheepishly and gestured towards the door through which Vanessa had entered. "Right, phone is recharging. In the kitchen. We were headed there anyway."

He shuffled towards the door, doing better now in gravity at the moment. Once in the kitchen, he retrieved his phone from the counter where it was plugged in and slid it open. "Let's see if my derp fingers can do this right now," Ian mumbled. Apparently they could, because a moment later, he looked back up at Vanessa and flashed her a quick smile. "Okay, shoot."
