User ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageThe doors to the gym were heavy, much heavier than expected considering that ten-year olds made up a good amount of the visitors, and for a moment when they didn’t budge Raide worried that it was a test designed to test the literal strength of the challengers. Thankfully, after another tug on the handle, the door stopped being troublesome and came open with a small pop, letting some of the cool, moist air inside escape. This mysterious event -well, it was mysterious to Nell who was still comfortably sitting in the crook of her trainer’s arm- was due completely to the fact that there was a lot of water inside the building, most of it contained in large, deep pools, but some had been splashed over onto the floor by some overactive person or Pokemon.

Like most natatoriums, this gym’s floor was probably more treacherous than anything else in it, and Raide made sure to take special care not to go tumbling down into the water or onto the hard tiled floor. There was a clear path leading to an open area designated for Pokemon battles, but besides that it looked basically like any other swimming pool with Pokemon added into the mix. In one area, some looked like they were just playing around, but in others it was obvious to see how this gym had earned its reputation. Raide watched as a Golduck just flattened a Starmie to the wall with a Hydro Pump, and also watched as the Starmie picked itself right back up and fired back with a water pulse. She couldn’t help but wince. No, no, no. Cyndaquil was not going out there if she could help it. The Golduck used scald, and Raide was considering not even letting Chinchou out there and trying to just run with Scyther... But then she looked down at the Chinchou who was now squirming in her arms.

“Chou-Chou! Chou-Chou!” It was in a surprisingly upbeat tone, and Raide could see that she was waving over at the bigger and stronger water-type Pokemon, and not struggling to run away. “‘Golduck! Golduck! Do that again! I wanna see!’” The Golduck whirled around, apparently unused to being addressed in such a manner. A second later, he was hit in the back of the head with a bubblebeam. He spluttered for a minute, indignantly, how dare his sparring opponent hit him while he was not looking!

“‘Pay attention,’” The Starmie chided quietly as it spun around in the water, her voice slightly muted. The only reply was a glare and some bubbles, supposedly from a sigh.

'“But our job is to battle and make others better, right? I was just going to do what she asked,”' Golduck huffed with no small amount of petulance. He just wanted to show off to the younger Pokemon, honestly, but that’s what everyone said he was supposed to be doing. “'Use an ice beam. It’ll make it look cooler.'”

Starmie appeared as if it did not want to go along with Golduck’s childish plan, but ended up firing off another ice beam just so that they could get back to actual practice. “Staaaaa~!” The Golduck shot under the water and then jumped back out, firing off a scald that met with the first attack halfway across the pool they were in. As they clashed, Nell’s eyes were wide in excitement, while Raide was still watching on in slight horror and the Golduck stood proudly on the edge of the pool. She couldn’t see anything because they had met with a loud hiss, creating a huge cloud of steam that enveloped the entire inside of the gym.

“OPEN THE DOORS!” A loud and familiar voice echoed though the whiteness, demanding to be heard and obeyed. It only took a few minutes for the room to clear up after the command came, and the orange haired girl from before stood with her arms crossed at the head of the gym. “Alright. Whose idea was this?” She didn’t really need to ask because the open book that was Golduck was obviously responsible. She glared, before her gaze softened and she sighed. “I think that’s worth swimming some laps, don’t you think?” He lowered his head, but didn’t look too guilty about it. “Let’s work on the contest routines outside next time.”

“Alright, then.” The orange haired girl clapped twice and grinned. “Get back to work, that’s enough playing around for today. We can’t lose our edge or nobody will take us seriously!” Just about everyone listened and went back to their business training or playing around in the water while the speaker headed over to the Golduck and the Starmie that had caused the whole event. As she moved closer, the Starmie’s arms were drooping as it obviously was not accustomed to being in trouble. On the other hand, Golduck looked like he knew exactly what to expect and had gotten back into the water to blow bubbles absently. “Well, you two,” she began quietly, “If we ever have an ice-type specialist in here, I want you to do what you just did.” Of course, battle strategy came first in a super-offensive gym. “But don’t bother during training. Since it’s obvious you have special attacks and strategy covered, go for seven laps around the outside of the pool. Starmie, go for five. Just don’t give into peer pressure next time. Ok?”

Golduck snorted a little and got straight to doing his punishment, seeming relieved to have gotten off so lightly, probably because it was going to be a good story to laugh at later, while Starmie drooped a little further before getting to it. Apparently the guilt was worse than the punishment itself. Raide and Chinchou just sort of looked on as the water-types began to swim quickly, and both were impressed by the speed of which they made it around the pool. “‘Golduck! Golduck! That was so fun! I’m going to learn how to do that and be strong, too!’” the Chinchou called out as the blue Pokemon was finishing up his first lap. He looked up from his swimming, slowed down a little and winked at the smaller Pokemon before speeding off toward the other end of the pool. Yes, it was so worth the punishment to be able to show off.

By this time, Raide was beginning to wonder what sort of trainer this girl was to able to command that kind of respect and was also beginning to develop a tentative theory on the subject. And, well, even if she was wrong, it’d be a good starting point toward figuring out who to challenge in this gym. “Hello,” The girl turned around as Raide addressed her. “I’m here to Challenge the Cerulean Gym.” She thought her statement over for a moment. “Or the Gym leader.” If that was the better phrasing.

It didn’t seem to matter because the orange haired girl had obviously ‘been there and done that’ for just about everything pertaining to battling. It was obvious that she was much more prepared for a battle than Raide was, but hesitated as she looked back at the large pool behind her where the troublemakers were still swimming. “Alright then, umm...” Raide filled in the awkward silence with her name, “Raide. I’m Misty. You were with Steve earlier, weren’t you?” Yes she was, Raide confirmed. “Well-” Misty grinned confidently, "I hope your strategy is more complex than his is, or this is going to be a very long battle. Lets let them finish up before we begin. It’ll give us some time to get ready.”

“Sounds good to me,” Raide replied quietly, secretly proud that she had kept her voice from exposing her nerves. Now she knew why Steve the fisherman had called Misty the ‘mermaid’ at least. As instructed, she walked over to her side of the battlefield with Nell still in tow, who would presumably be the first one to battle. It’d be interesting because, while the trainer hadn’t formally checked her moves, she had already seen all of them. Confuse ray, water gun, thunder wave and some other electric attack. They should hold up fine... Hopefully.

“We’re good to go!” Misty shouted from the other side of the pool as the Golduck and Starmie headed away, “All out offense! Go Walrien!”

“Chin- Nell!” Raide placed the Pokemon gently into the water. “You can do this!” And the battle began.

The two battlers just sat there for a moment, trying to figure out who was going to make the first move and what the other could be expected to do. It was a bit of a staring contest until Raide’s nerves got the best of her and she couldn’t wait to do anything any longer. “Alright,” Raide began hesitantly but quickly as the Walrein looked around, “Hit him with electricity from a distance. Don’t let him get close.” It was obvious that a Chinchou would be much faster than the Walrien, but that the Chinchou would be all too easy to crush with a body slam or... something. “Careful, don’t shock yourself.”

“Chinchou!” Nell shouted out as she focused on attacking. A bolt of lighting appeared from her antenna and arced over to the larger Pokemon, instantly damaging him and sending electricity through the rest of the water. Fortunately, it didn’t seem to bother the Nell too much as she just swam around in unpredictable circles to avoid whatever the Walrein would retaliate with. It was no use, as Misty soon realized that Raide’s simple tactics consisted only of ‘offense’ and ‘avoidance’.

“Nice try,” Misty called from across the sparking water, despite the fact that her Pokemon had just taken a nasty hit, “But you can’t escape from this! Walrein, use earthquake and body slam when they’re immobilized!” The Ice-Type immediately disappeared under the water, so Nell instinctively rose to the surface and looked down. Raide couldn’t tell where the Pokemon had vanished to due to the waves... that were slowly getting bigger as the ground began to shake beneath her feat. Both Pokemon and trainer were shaken around, the Chinchou was actually thrown onto the ground on the edge of the pool where she took quite the beating. The trainer only had to drop to her knees in order to keep from falling over.

As Raide looked over to her tiny Pokemon in concern, Misty warned, “Don’t take your eyes off of your opponent!” Raide glanced back over, taking the advice of the gym leader just in time to see a stream of bubbles in the water working their ways towards them. With a roar- well, it sounded to Raide like a roar- the Walrein broke the surface of the water and swam as swiftly as possible toward the dazed Pokemon. Still, it wasn’t very quick, which gave the younger trainer some time to hurry and give a command.

“Lightning! Again!-” With each inch the massive Pokemon gained Raide was becoming even more nervous, “Before he hits you!”

“Body Slam! Now!”

Nell recovered at Raide’s call and the warning of impending danger, looking around and firing off another bolt of electricity as soon as she noticed the Walrein heaving himself out of the water. It hit him straight on and froze him in his tracks before he could attack the smaller Pokemon. The Walrein was still for a moment- Misty waited to see if he was paralyzed or unable to battle- then fell over to the side, leaving Nell to scurry back to avoid being trapped underneath him. “Great job!” Raide praised her Chinchou as Misty returned her first Pokemon.

“Not too shabby, but we’re not done yet! I choose you, Ludicolo!”

Raide looked on cautiously as Misty pulled wound up to throw the next Pokeball, and listened to the small, splashing ‘plonk’ sound that was made as Nell dumped herself back into the pool. The ball containing Ludicolo flew out to the center of the pool and the Pokemon that appeared from it, dropped like a rock into the water. Unlike the Chinchou before it, this made a huge splash and a wave that flowed over the sides of the pool. Now, a strange, cheerful looking Pokemon was sitting right in the middle of the water spinning slightly and bobbing up and down as if it was dancing. ‘It looks like a furry Golduck,’ Raide thought incredulously as she considered reaching into her bag for her Pokedex to see if that was what they all really looked like.

“Ludicolo!” Misty called out -Nevermind, she could look it up later- “Use giga drain!” Maybe Raide should have looked up that Ludicolo was a grass-type as well.

“Nell! Use thunderwave so that he can’t attack you!” Already the Chinchou had been tossed around the gym by a move that she was weak to, and Raide had no idea how much more punishment she could take. Perhaps it would have been better to get into some practice battles before leaping into a gym battle. It was poor forethought on both trainer and Pokemon’s part.

The Ludicolo paid no attention to the beginnings of electricity on the Chinchou’s antennae and obeyed his trainer’s command. Glowing, green, seed-type orbs shot out from both of its hands and made a beeline for Nell as she finally was able to charge her thunderwave. Being in the water, it was probably impossible to miss, but Raide was thinking wishfully when she predicted that the move would stop the Ludicolo from putting up any sort of opposition. The glowing orbs struck, and Nell's battle was over. Drained of all energy, she was only able to float around unconsciously until Raide could return her to her Pokeball.

“Nell, return,” Raide called out with a bit of sadness, as they had both battled as well as they knew how. “Great job,” She whispered, then shouted, “I choose you, Scyther!” A bug-type should put a grass-type on the defensive.

Misty seemed to balk and whiten slightly as she recognized the name of the Pokemon and began to plan accordingly. Raide, on the other hand, wondered what Scyther would do when presented with a pool on one hand and a gym battle on the other. Her question was answered as Scyther appeared, hovering over the water by a few feet, looking questioningly, though uninterestedly, around. "Scyther!" The trainer called, "This is Cerulean Gym! Use bug bite on the Ludicolo!"

As Scyther complied, seeing no problem with the command for once, Misty reacted quickly. "Ludicolo, return!" She shouted and rapidly drew out her third Pokeball, "Lumineon! It's your turn!" The swift change in Pokemon threw Raide for a loop as a distinctively water-type Pokemon appeared, but Syther didn't really seem to care and kept up his speed as he swept in on his opponent. He struck the Lumineon for the first time, but it didn't go down so, without any sort of command, he just followed up the bug bite with a spinning wing attack before flying back up above the water where he wouldn't be hit. This time, the Pokemon fainted and Misty had no choice but to send Ludicolo to battle again.

As Ludicolo appeared for the last time, Raide shouted, "Scyther! Use bug-" Syther dive-bombed the furry golduck with a bug bite, almost instantaneously getting a knock-out once the sharp blades made contact. "-Bite..."

User ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageThere was a beat of silence where both teams looked on to make sure that the Ludicolo was out, then, with a tilt of the head and a slightly disappointed click of the finger, Misty returned her Pokemon to his Pokeball so that he could get some rest. She smiled good-naturedly at Raide when her duty to her Pokemon was finished for the time being, and stepped away from the edge of the pool. Beckoning Raide over to her side of the pool, she began fishing around in the pockets of a sporty looking jacket for something. As Raide headed over as instructed, Scyther worked on getting back over solid land and ended up trailing behind his trainer who turned around with a hesitantly excited grin. “Good job,” She mouthed towards him as she resisted the urge to give him two thumbs up, hoping that he had the ability to read lips as she would have thought it rude to burst out in celebration right in front of the person they had just defeated. Scyther inclined his head in acknowledgement, appreciative of recognition, yet not quite sure why the girl looked so excited. It hadn’t been a particularly taxing battle for him; he hadn’t been hit, he hadn’t been provoked in any way, and he was still in the mild mood that he had started the day in. The green Pokemon just put the extreme reaction down to the girl being quite strange and happy about little things, but didn’t really notice his own arrogance.

“Ah!” Misty cried out in triumph, making Raide whip around quickly, nearly toppling into the water (again), “Look, I found it! Here. Hold out your hand,” She instructed, in a tone fully expecting to be listened to. Raide did as she was told and turned her palm facing up. “Well, you’ve proven that you have what it takes to beat this gym and that you have a good strategic head on your shoulders. This,” Misty boasted proudly as she placed a small, blue metallic object into the open palm, “Is the Cascade Badge. Fitting, isn’t it?” The gym leader seemed to take note of the careful, slightly amazed scrutiny with which Raide studied the object. “Is this the first one you’ve earned?”

“Yes,” Raide admitted honesty, but with some slight hesitation in case she had needed to challenge someone else first. There was probably no other explanation for the horrendous nerves she had been experiencing during the battle unless that was what everyone experienced every battle. In that case, Raide wasn’t sure she could handle the stress. “I’ve only met Lieutenant Surge and, well…” Her voice got very quiet very quickly as she ducked her head slightly, “I really didn’t want to challenge him first…”

Misty looked surprised for a moment and then gave a knowing giggle at Raide's frankness. “I get what you’re saying. The guy’s really loud when he gets into a battle.” Like before, she clapped her hands together like she had something very important to say, causing Raide to stand up a little straighter and Scyther’s mind to stop wandering. Misty took Raide by the arm and began leading her to the edge of the gym where it was drier and less crowded. “Anyway, as a gym leader it’s my responsibility to get you a badge case and I guess I should give you a little gift to get you started on your way, then. I’m all out of TMs, but…”

“That’s really not necce-“

“Yes it is.” And that was all it took to stop Raide from protesting any further.

User ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImagePokemon and trainer made it to wherever Misty was taking them and stopped curiously as the gym leader released Raide’s arm and picked up a small case. After a moment of hesitance (or deliberation) she also grabbed a small booklet from off of a bench and held them both out for Raide to take. “Alright, first things first. Put the badge in its proper place. It should click in right like… That! Ok, like I said before, I don’t have bubblebeam on hand right now but your Chinchou should be able to learn it pretty easily.”

“How can you tell?”

The gym leader seemed to stand up a little taller. “I’m THE person to come to if you need to know about water Pokemon. Chinchou and Lanturns tend to have a knack for certain moves including bubblebeam. So,” Misty waved and changed the subject to the subject she was aiming for in the first place, “I’m giving you this instead. If you don’t mind the extra work you have to put into training with these skills. It’s a book that covers the basics of temperature change for water Pokemon. There are various moves you can get out of that, but,” She grinned mischievously, “I think I’ll leave it to you and your Chinchou to figure those out.”

A bit overwhelmed by, well, just about everything (including but not limited to meeting trainers out on the road, catching a Chinchou, Cyndaquil listening to her, finishing a gym challenge and not losing any more hair) Raide could barely get out any words of thanks for a moment. In those few seconds, she looked more like a water-type Pokemon gasping for breath than a trainer grasping for words to say. “W-Wow, thanks,” She finally managed to say as she became aware of Scyther staring impatiently at her back, clicking his sharp… toe-claw-things on the floor, waiting for her to say something ungraceful, “I really appreciate this. It was a great battle.” Raide wasn’t sure what exactly was considered a great battle, but the thought had to count for something, right?

Misty seemed to find the comment acceptable and nodded her enthusiastic agreement even as she placed one hand on her hip with a slight bit of attitude. No matter the battler, no one liked to lose. “Yes it was,” She then seemed to stop and listen. Raide prevented herself from asking any more questions and listened as well… not that she knew what she was listening for or heard anything particularly exciting. After a moment, Misty refocused in on the conversation and mentioned quietly, “Congradulations on your first badge, Raide. It’s raining now-“ Now Raide heard the pitter-patter sounds, “-But I’ll wish you luck, especially when it comes to Brock. His head is full of as many pebbles as his Pokemon are made of,” With a hurried goodbye, Misty ran off to the back of the gym, presumably to collect her stuff for a journey. Oh well, the pair left behind would be just fine, especially as soon as they made it to a Pokemon center for Nell. Raide sped up at the thought of her tiny, injured Pokemon and wondered if it would be safe to formally introduce the three indoors. Probably… Well, at least safer than having Cyndaquil and his temper out in the rain.

Behind her, just before he was returned to his Pokeball to avoid the rain, Scyther contemplated the chances that he would be used in the battle against 'Rockhead' versus the chances that he wouldn't even be around in order to be used. Perhaps she'd give up or move on to different interests by the time they got over there. Maybe Cyndaquil would have a knack for contests. Scyther glanced over again at his upbeat trainer. No. Probably not.

Sam River

Sam tossed open the doors, "Misty I challenge you! I Son of Master River will be your-" "She isn't hear kid" there was a man inside the gym looking sleepy. He sat in a sleeping bag next to the pool an altogether bad idea. "She doesn't get here till six am at least." Sam checked the time. It was 4:30. He sat there for hours exercising himself and his pokemon. Finally Misty walked in. Sam got up from doing crunches, "Alright. I already did my speech three times, two of which to people that walked in and saw you were not here and I mistook for you temporarily, so your friend will give you the cliff notes." The man who was now out of his sleeping bag sipping coffee went over the highlights, "He is a challenger from the river family. All of them are fighters and he wants to be a legend and so he is going to try to beat you to get in his dads favor." Misty blinked sleep out of her eyes and finally responded with, "You want a battle or not?"

Sam River

Misty walked to her side of the gym across the pool. Small rafts floated onto the water, Misty tossed a pokeball still half asleep and a dewgong landed in the water neglecting the new rafts. Sam plucked his sandrew from his belt and tossed it onto the field. Shasta landed on the raft and instantly curled into a ball, "It's ok Shasta. You'll be fine!" Sam yelled across the field. Shasta uncurled slowly. The elderly man mumbled formalities about the battle starting now. "Quick, Night slash!" "*yawn* Rain Dance." Dewgong splashed about as the ceiling fogged up. Shasta carefully jumped from raft to raft and charged into the Dewgong, claw first, charged with shadowy energy. The Dewgong didn't seem to take it too hard. Misty batted sleep from her eyes and muttered, "Frost Breath" Dewgong exhaled a fine mist of ice crystals that dug into Shasta's thick armor plating. She fell into the water adding insult to injury, however she did not panic for she was fainted. "Return!" Sam raised his pokeball and Shasta was dragged back in. He didn't waste a second and tossed the next ball into the air, "Lets go! Chuck" Chuck landed on the planks easily. He got his bearings and got his orders. "Brick Break!" "Iron tail." Chuck primed his attack and looked for target who had just submerged. Suddenly his pallet exploded as a steel coated tail flew though the air. Chuck hit it back with Brick break doing massive damage back. "And frost breath." Another blast of arctic particles and Chuck was out. "Return" Dewgong was back in the water and Chuck was back in the pokeball. Sam winced. Chuck was taken down so quickly. He wouldn't let it shatter his resolve though. "Lets go Becca!" The Minun flew into the air quickly taking aerial advantage on her air balloon. "Discharge!" Quickly the pool was charged with electric energy frying the weakened dewgong. He was down for the count. The rain stopped "Return." Misty looked displeased but still tired. She tossed out her next pokeball and a Poliwrath landed on a raft. Becca still drifted happily above the pokemon on her balloon. "Charge" "Bulk Up" The two pokemon began to build energy.
"And discharge!" Sam smiled as chaos filled the room. Suddenly the poliwrath being returned to his pokeball to be replaced by a tentacruel. "Charge!" Becca planned to continue her assault. "Swagger" The tentacruel danced about in a hypnotic way. Becca began to smile in a strange way. It seemed like the pokemon drunk. "Discharge!" Becca seemed to hear that attack though the haze she was in and she lit up the pool like a fireworks. The tentacruel just took it and used Rain Dance. Sam smiled, it was in the bag! "Signal Beam!" Becca blinked and struggled with it and finally fired a multi colored beam. It nearly missed and the tentacruel shook it off. "Scald!" Burning water shot from the pool and singed Becca's fur causing her to let go of her balloon. She landed on a Raft and she was having definite trouble knowing adjusting. "Discharge!" Sam yelled. The bunny stumbled and fried itself in confusion with its own electricity. Misty chuckled, "Wow, impressive, Come on and sludge bomb it." Tentacruel shot a ball of toxic goo into the raft from bellow blasting debris, poison and Becca into the raining sky. As she flew though the air the she seemed sober, "Now quick Discharge!" Lighting poured from the little pokemon and into the water frying the poor jellyfish pokemon. Becca landed raring to go. Sam asked, "How you doing Becca?" "Mui MUIN!" she answered excitedly. Misty nodded impressed, "Not just anyone can survive my Tentacruel, you are a worthy adversary. Now lets end this with my good friend Starmie!" Starmie floated above the battle field second star spinning rapidly. "Discharge!" "Scald!" The attacks mixed in midair. The Starmie buckled but refused to fall. Becca however had taken too much damage. She landed on a pallet. "Return Becca!" Sam was pumped. "Lets finish this! Go Buddy!" The Bulbasaur hit the raft. Misty, "I am not out of tricks yet. ICE BEAM!" Misty was finally awake. The battle field froze a massive column of ice shot out of the pool to where Starmie was. The attack drained the injured pokemon, but Buddy was beneath the ice. Misty smiled and said, "Your good, but you are no match for a gym leader of my caliber. Go fight Brock or something. Sam yelled angrily, "I am the son of the great master river! I will not lose! VINE WHIP!" Nothing filled the air. Misty looked at Sam with pity, "Sorry but its no good, you have been bested. Fighting spirit doesn't make up for a week pokemon. I'll help unthau-" there was a sudden cracking noise. Up the shaft of ice formed by the beam cut Buddy flailing its vines cutting thought he ice above running into the air. "What!" Misty was shocked. Sam smiled as the bulbasaur cut thought he ice at record speed, "Fighting spirit is all one needs to win. We cut thought the ice like we cut though our troubles! This is how we work! Emerge!" The end of the cone shattered as the bulbasaur flew into the air!" Misty yelled, "Starmie Dodge!" The Starmie floated to the other side of the cone quickly. "Buddy! Overgrow Vinewhip. Buddy wrapped a vine around the column of ice and flung himself around and flew high above the starmie. The whip hit the water type and flung it into the ice Fainted. Bulbasaur landed and sang a victory cry. He then collapsed in exhaustion. "Return." "Return." Misty walked across the ice to congratulate the victor. Misty handed him the badge, "Here you go, this is the cascade badge. You earned it. Also here is an evolutionary token. You can use it to evolve one of your pokemon." (Sam received the cascade badge and an Evolutionary token. Sam put items in Key items) Sam bowed, "Thank you Misty. Have a good day." Sam turned to walk out but Misty stopped him. "Wait!" Sam turned around and smiled at her as she said, "I am sorry. Your fighting spirit was just amazing. But I still don't understand how." Sam explained, "Well being ruthless in all things has its advantages. That is why I took this bulbasaur with me. His ability, overgrow, embodies that. The more he gets hurt the more he resists. Combined with the desire to succeed, he cut thought he ice like it was butter." Misty smiled and nodded, "It was a pleasure fighting you." "and me you." Sam left the building.
