Mezame heaved a sigh. "I don't think I could run even if I wanted to." She moaned. "I was chased by Beedrill, had an egg fall on me, accidentally caught a Pokémon, ran away from home, had people give me stuff out of pity and won my first Pokémon battle all in one day!" Listing off the things she'd been through today made Mezame even more tired and she yawned. They had finally made it into the City and Mezame was glad to finally be off of that hill. "So where's the Pokémon Centre in this place?" She asked. It was getting dark now but even so Mezame could tell the difference between Cerulean and Saffron City. It was much smaller and the rushing of water could be heard near by and even just walking through the streets there was plenty of greenery and flowers. Mezame liked it, it was much prettier and more relaxing than the busy on goings of Saffron City. Mezame gladly followed Glint and Gruff, grateful to be with someone who knew where they were going. Had she been on her own she'd be wandering alone in the dark and she didn't much like the thought of that.

Glint followed Gruff through the streets of Cerulean, looking around at the cute little buildings, all bathed in deep orange sunlight. It wouldn't be long before the sun set completely and the street lights started flickering on. "The bike shop's over that way, but it'll be long-since shut now," Glint said, pointing to the west. He carried on following Gruff northwards, through the city and toward the pokémon centre in the central plaza. Cerulean really was a beautiful city. Of the cities and towns that Glint had visited, Cerulean was probably his favourite. It always relaxed him, since it was such a calm and easy-going place. "Grawr~awr?" Gruff asked. Glint nodded. "I could definitely go for some food. How about you Mezame?"

Mezame looked towards to direction of the Bike shop, she'd almost forgotten about it. The beauty of the City in the setting sun had caught all of her attention. "It's so much nicer here than back home." Mezame commented to no one in particular. Mezame wondered that if there was a city this nice so close to her own home how many others were out there? Mezame decided she was going to visit them all. Glint's mention of food sent Mezame's stomach rumbling and she realised just how hungry she was. She hadn't thought about food all day and hadn't eaten since this morning before she even considered leaving the house. "Food?!" Mezame asked suddenly less tired and now excitable. "I could seriously do with some food." Mezame's stomach seemed to concur.

Glint laughed a little at how Mezame's mood seemed to change at the mention of food. Then he remembered that if he didn't phone Nurse Joy they might not get a bed, never mind food. "Give me a minute," he said to Mezame. His pokégear had several Nurse Joys listed under the address book--one from Saffron, one from Celadon, one from Lavender and the one from Cerulean. Thankfully he'd thought to label them all as he entered them into the system. He selected the Cerulean one from the list and held the pokégear out to get a decent picture of his face for the call. "Hello?" Nurse Joy asked, answering the call. "Hi Nurse Joy, it's me Gl--" "Oh hello Glint. It's late for you to be working isn't it? I didn't get a call saying my happiny had hatched. Is everything okay?" Nurse Joy interrupted. "No, no, your happiny's fine. I'm on my way to Pewter to take an oddish back to its trainer. I have a friend with me. Do you have two beds spare?" Glint asked. "Of course! Have you eaten or should I have Chansey prepare you something?" "That would be great if you could. We're both pretty hungry," Glint admitted. "We'll be with you in ten minutes or so. We're just on the outskirts of the city now."

Mezame was intrigued by the Pokégear device. She peered over Glints shoulder while trying to hide behind it so not as to get in the shot. Mezame felt even more lucky to be around someone like Glint. He seemed to be well known around this area of the region. Mezame supposed it wasn't that surprising when he worked at the Day Care centre. And from their conversation Mezame guessed that the Pokémon Centres must fill up quick. "Cool." Mezame said as Glint hung up. "Pretty lucky everyone knows you around these parts isn't it? Aah~ I can't wait to sit down and eat something!" Mezame sighed happily. "Hey, do you think I should have the nurse take a look at my Starly? Mezame asked "It did battle today, it seemed fine after taking a bath and getting the rest of that string shot off but I'm still kinda worried about it."

"I'm sure Nurse Joy would be happy to look at your starly. I don't know a single Nurse Joy who'd turn down a trainer who wanted them their pokémon to have a check-up," Glint said. "This Nurse Joy is especially nice. She's the one we take our pokémon to when they have problems we can't deal with. We're looking after her happiny egg at the moment, sort of, in-kind. She help us a lot, so we help her without charge sort of thing." Glint picked up the pace as they entered the plaza in the middle of the city. The pokémon centre was right in the centre, with a lot of empty space around it where pidgey and starly gathered through the days. As Glint approached the doors of the centre the nearest street light came on, followed by another on the other side of the plaza. It seemed they'd got there just in time. "I vote we head straight inside and get to eating!"

Glint walked out into the street, the only sound the trickle of water that seemed to follow him around the city. There were no other people around, which made for an eerie feeling as by then it looked like it could have been midday; the sun was rising ever higher in the sky and there wasn't a cloud to be seen. Glint had always thought there'd be people rushing around in big cities, even at five in the morning. But it looked like Cerulean didn't match up to that expectation. "I wonder where everyone is?" Glint asked. "Grawr," Gruff whimpered, looking around. "I guess this is normal," Glint shrugged. He pulled out his pokégear and went to the GPS page, to figure out the best route to take to get to Pewter. "Grrrrr..." Gruff growled. He ran in front of Glint to protect him. Glint stopped and listened hard for whatever Gruff could hear. There was only the running water though, as far as Glint could tell. "What's the matter Gruff? You smell something?" A bush ruffled, then. Glint stared at it. He was tempted to have Gruff use flamethrower on it. But that would leave one dead bush. "Squir~" "Grawr?" Gruff cocked his head. "Wait a minute," Glint thought aloud. "That sounds like..." He walked toward the bush and before he was even within a metre of it could see the squirtle wriggling around on top. It looked like it was trapped in the pointy twigs and little leaves. "Hey there Squirtle," Glint said. The squirtle stopped wriggling. It looked at Glint and huffed, "squir-tle." "So I take it you don't want any help?" Glint asked. "Squirtle," the squirtle shook its head. Glint nodded. "So you're going to get yourself out?" "Squirlte squirtle," the pokémon nodded. It wriggled some more, but wasn't getting anywhere. It'd never get out on its own. "Why not use a move?" Glint asked. "Squirtle squirt," the squirtle said. It looked at a building a few metres away with a steely expression, then fired its water gun. The power of the spray pushed the squirtle back, bending the twigs of the bush down. "Wait a second," Glint worried. He knew that as soon as the squirtle stopped spraying, the bush would spring back into place. "Wait, if you--" The squirtle stopped its water gun. The bush sprang back upright and squirtle was fired upward... straight into Glint's face. Smack!

"Squirble squirble, squirb squirb squirble!" "Ngah," Glint groaned, holding his face. "Squirble squi-i-i-r!" the squirtle complained. Glint sat up and continued to rub his face. He watched as Gruff and the squirtle squared up to each other, probably arguing over who hurt who. "Gruff ruff ruff!" "Squirb squirb squirble!" "Hey, knock it off," Glint complained. "It was an accident. I'm fine, so it's not a big deal for me. Are you okay?" "Squirble," the squirtle huffed. It had a fat lip, to go with the light bruise on its forehead. "Squirb-irb..." "That's quite a knock you've got on your lip there," Glint said. "Let me put something on it to help." The squirtle sat back on its tail in a huff. "Squirble squirble." Glint was already routing around in his satchel for the medicinal cream he knew he'd packed. Thankfully he was organised, so he found it pretty quickly and squeezed some out onto his finger. "Now stay still. This won't hurt." "Squirble..." Glint applied the cream to the squirtle's bottom lip and chin. "Squirb... squirb... squirb-ir-t." "What did you say?" Glint chuckled. "Squirtle!" the water pokémon answered, grumpily. "You said Squirbert." "Squirtle squirtle, squirb... squirb..." "You see?" Glint asked, smiling. The squirtle did not see the funny side. It bounced up off its tail and turned its back on Glint. "Squirtle squirtle." "Don't worry. It'll feel better in a few minutes," Glint said. He looked around, then, and realised that they were a good mile away from where they'd seen the squirtle the previous night. And it had been heading in the opposite direction. "What brings you here anyway?" "Squirtle squirtle, squirt squir squirtle!" the squirtle explained, waving its arms. "Squirtle squirt... squirtle squirt squirtle! Squirtle squirtle, squirt squirtle squirt!" Glint leaned away as the squirtle drew closer and closer, looking more and more frustrated. "Okay, okay. So you're mad. Are you mad at me?" "Squirtle squirt," the squirtle shook its head. It pointed southwards. "Squirtle squirt squirt. Squirtle squirtle." "Oh. That's... terrible?" Glint asked. "Squirtle." "Grawr?" Gruff asked. "Squirtle squirtle," the squirtle replied, before turning tail and rushing off. Glint quickly stood up. He watched the dust kick up behind the squirtle as it ran away, clearly on some kind of mission. "Hey Squirbert?" The squirtle stopped and looked back. "Squirt?" Glint smiled. He knew that's what it'd said. "I'll see you around!"

With Squirbert out of sight Glint and Gruff brushed themselves down and continued on their way toward Mt. Moon. Before long they were far enough from the centre of the city that they couldn't hear any water any more. The tall buildings of the city centre had gone and small, residential buildings took their place. Glint thought they looked like the sort of houses elderly people would live in, from how the windows were dressed and how the gardens were kept. "Grr..." Glint stopped walking. He couldn't believe they were going to be interrupted again. It couldn't be Squirbert. It just couldn't. "What is it Gruff?" "Grawr?" Glint looked ahead and saw a bike laid on its side at the side of the road. He didn't think Gruff would growl at an inanimate object though, so its owner must have been nearby too. "Hey?" Glint tried to disguise it but he totally jumped with fright. "Yeah?" "Battle me," a boy said. Glint saw him walk down the garden path of a bungalow just up ahead. "What?" "Two-on-two. Go, Teddiursa," the boy shouted. He threw a pokéball and a red stream of light flashed, then faded, leaving a Teddiursa stood on the grass. "Wait, I'm not a trainer," Glint said. "You so are. You have a growlithe and you have another pokéball on your belt," the boy argued. "That's a sick oddish that I'm returning to its owner. I work at the daycare on route five," Glint explained. He started walking again, intending to go straight past the boy, who should have been delivering newspapers rather than challenging random passers-by. "One-on-one then. Teddiursa, use fury swipes!" "Gruff ruff," Gruff barked. He jumped clean over the Teddiursa's head. "It's a normal type, so Gruff, double kick!" Glint shouted. Gruff reacted immediately, letting off two kicks of his back paws as he flew over the little bear pokémon. "Hey! Teddiursa are you okay?" the boy shouted. The pokémon had fallen flat on its face on the grass. "Teddi..." "Gruff, double kick again," Glint ordered. Gruff turned about and ran at the Teddiursa again. "Teddiursa, dodge it!" the boy shouted. But his pokémon squealed and collapsed. Gruff brushed past it and unleashed another two kicks of his back paws. The Teddiursa was flat out on the grass, unable to battle, and Gruff hadn't taken a single hit. "Alright, Munchlax, go!" "Hey, wait a minute," Glint growled. He ran to the Teddiursa on the ground and rolled it onto its back, supporting its head with his hand. "Get off my pokémon," the newspaper boy growled. He tucked his munchlax's pokéball away and ran at Glint to push him away. "What's your problem, kid?" Glint asked. He held his left hand out to keep the boy from barging him over. "I told you I'm not a trainer." "Give me my Teddiursa." Glint picked the pokémon up and handed it over to the boy, as carefully as he would have done a baby. "You've got a lot to learn before you become a pokémon master, that's for sure." "What's that supposed to mean?" the boy asked. Glint didn't want to get into it. He continued on his way, leaving the boy to shout insults at him. "Wimp! I would've beaten you!" "Sure thing, kid," Glint said to himself. Gruff walked alongside him, knowing the score. It wasn't the first time some brat had challenged them and tried to make something more of it once the battle was over, and knowing trainers as he did, Glint knew it wouldn't be the last time it happened, either.

"Hey you there?" Glint ground to a stop again. He hung his head. If the interruptions continued the way they'd started, it'd take him years to get to Pewter City. "Don't mind him," the voice said. "He's just excitable." Glint looked into one of the gardens to his right and saw an elderly man sat on a white bench. "It's fine," Glint said. "Not likely to see him again." "Oh you never know," the old man said. Glint set off walking again. He discreetly waved Gruff along too. "Say," the old man called. Glint stopped walking. He looked at Gruff and spoke with a stage whisper. "It's going to be one of those days." "How'd your growlithe get to know double kick?" the old man asked. "It's a family thing. His dad knew it, so Gruff knew it from birth," Glint replied. He stayed stood still, looking over the white picket fence, toward the old man. The old man just sat there for a few seconds, before calling out again. "My name's Wilmslow. What's yours?" "Glint." "Oh, Glint Hatcher. You know my grandson," Wilmslow said. That got Glint's attention. "I don't think so," he replied. "We might be acquainted but I don't 'know' many people." "In a rush?" "Yes, as a matter of fact," Glint nodded. "Where are you going?" "Pewter." "And then where?" Wilmslow asked. "Home," Glint said. "And then where?" Wilmslow asked. "I'll let you know when I know," Glint replied. He tried not to snap but didn't think he'd done a very good job of it. "I can teach your growlithe how to dig," Wilmslow said. "Thank you Sir, but growlithe are puppy pokémon. Most of them - Gruff included - are quite capable of digging," Glint chuckled. "But can it utilise the ability in battle? Can it sense where its opponent is and come up beneath them? Can it throw them off balance, or high into the air, open to your next attack?" Wilmslow asked. He was talking about the attack move dig, rather than just simple digging. "Sorry but I can't see that being useful to us. You'd be wasting your time teaching Gruff how to dig." "But if you're going to challenge Brock--" "That's the thing. We're not. Like I told the paperboy, I'm not a trainer. I'm a breeder, taking an oddish to its trainer in Pewter," Glint explained. "I see..." Wilmslow nodded slowly. He didn't seem convinced; he looked like he was mulling something over in his mind. "We should get going," Glint said. He started walking again, almost curious what Wilmslow was thinking about. "Glint? You let me know when you change your mind." "Of course," Glint nodded. He waved Gruff onward. With a little luck they might get to route four without any further interruptions. Then, with a little more luck, they might start making some real headway. After the way the day had started though, Glint wasn't holding his breath. Like he'd said to Gruff, it was going to be one of those days.

Finally reaching a city so that she could rest, Blaize couldn't help but be happy. However, the bad thing was it looked like this place didn't have that many great hiding spots and if she wanted to get some rest soon she better find a spot before any trainer notices her.
A few minutes of watering around she noticed some large bushes that most humans couldn't squeeze through. Blaize made herself squeeze through and soon was on the other side that seemed to have very little human activity. Good as spot as any, she thought to herself.
Being wide open like this wasn't the first time. Normally most people would walk past her or just leave her alone. And with any luck today would be one of those days. It was the bad days where everyone wanted to catch her that she didn't get to sleep much, let alone be near fainting. Blaize had learned over time, that Nurse Joy was someone she could trust, with healing. Out of all the things though, Nurse Joy had always questioned why Blaize never said anything and why she wore a collar. The fewer people that knew Blaize could talk the less likely they wanted to catch her.

Dogwood slowed to a walk as he entered the town. He was in a residential area, and didn't wish to go about waking everyone up by dashing through. Not that he ran loudly or anything; it was just a precaution. There was a crash, and then, "Oh no! Teddiursa!" came a despaired voice from behind a stone wall. Dogwood ran alongside the wall until he came to the archway leading into the garden on the other side. There, a boy was having a heated battle with another Pokemon. But there was no other trainer nearby. So then... was that a wild Pokemon? What was it doing in the town like this? The Pokemon was a red crustacean, with sturdy legs and gnarly pincers. It was dressed with a blue emblem across it's chest, and on top of it's head was a bright star. Not that it glowed or anything, but the morning sunlight reflected off of it to create a dazzling effect. Dogwood reached for his Pokedex, " Crawdaunt: the Rogue Pokemon. Crawdaunt has an extremely violent nature that compels it to challenge other living things to battle. A veteran Crawdaunt that has prevailed in hundreds of battles has giant pincers marked with countless scars." The Crawdaunt seized the boy's Teddiursa in it's pincer and slammed it into the ground one final time. "Noooo! Teddiursa!" the boy cried, tearing up. As he dropped his guard, the crustacean bolted forward, ready to do the same to the boy. "I don't think so!" shouted Dogwood, leaping in front of the boy. The Crawdaunt didn't stop, though, and it's pincer came crushing in around Dogwood's shoulder. Continue below.

With his free hand, Dogwood smashed the Pokemon in the face with an open palm. But the Crawdaunt wouldn't budge. It's grip increased, and Dogwood could feel it's pincers digging into his flesh. SNAP! One of the tethers tying the egg to his back released, and dangled behind him. The egg was now hanging from only one shoulder. "Let go of me!" Dogwood exclaimed. He whirled around, and rammed the Pokemon into the stone wall of the garden. That did the trick! Crawdaunt released him and fell to the ground, before rolling back to it's feet. All the while, the boy was standing nearby, clasping his Teddiursa to his chest. Tears and snot were running down his face as he watched the battle between man and Pokemon. "Mister, you're bleeding!" he shouted. Dogwood hardly needed the boy to tell him that. He could feel the blood running down his arm. His shoulder was wounded pretty bad. If there was any better time to use his Pokemon, now was it. "Atlas, I choose you," Dogwood said, reaching into his sash and hurling a Pokeball into the air. "Kid, hold this egg," Dogwood said, handing the boy the egg as Atlas appeared in a red flash. "SCRAAAHHH!!" Atlas cried intimidatingly. "CRAHHHHHH!!" The Pokemon roared back. Sure enough, Crawdaunt wasn't about to back down. "You can take him, Atlas! Use Double Team," Dogwood ordered. Atlas slammed his fist into his palm and three photo-copies phased into existence. The Crawdaunt bolted forward with an open pincer, and crushed one of the substitutes. POOF! He opened his second pincer, and fired a geyser at another Substitute. POOF! "Atlas, use Drain Punch!" Dogwood ordered, clasping his shoulder with his free hand. Crawdaunt, whirled his tail around and struck the third Substitute. POOF! He had already destroyed all three. But of course, they were mere distractions. Atlas jumped out from behind the Crawdaunt and threw a fist at it's backside, knocking it down. Continue below

Dogwood threw a Pokeball at the injured Pokemon before it could get back on it's feet. This Pokemon was reckless and dangerous; what better way to incapacitate it than with a Pokeball? But more than that, with a little discipline, Crawdaunt could prove a valuable member of Dogwood's growing team. The Pokeball rumbled in the dirt once. Then a second time. Then crack! It split open and rolled off to the side, as Crawdaunt burst forth and struck Atlas with a closed pincer. The Scraggy flew head over heel through the garden, crashing in a flowerbed, and tearing it up in the process of clawing his way out. "Atlas, use Payback!" Dogwood shouted, readying a second Pokeball. Crawdaunt trampled through the flowerbed as it chased Atlas, and got ready to strike once more. Just as the pincer came hurling towards Atlas' head, he caught it with both hands, and lifted the Crawdaunt over his head. Or at least, that's what should have happened. Instead, as he caught the pincer with both hands, Crawdaunt's second pincer thrust foward and latched on to Atlas' waist. The water Pokemon pushed Atlas to the ground, and started waling on him with his free claw. "Oh no! ATLAS!" Dogwood yelled. He chucked the empty Pokeball at the Crawdaunt's back, and it was summoned inside in a flash of light. "Quick, get up, Atlas!" Dogwood knew that second Pokeball wouldn't be enough. But it would buy him time to switch Pokemon. Atlas couldn't take much more. "Atlas, return! GO Hercules!" The Heracross switched places with the Scraggy, and just as expected, Crawdaunt shattered the second Pokeball. Hercules brandished his horn, ready to take down the Pokemon threatening his friend and master. "Crahhhhh," the water type growled, unphased by this new foe. Despite it's readiness, it was obviously getting worn out. Dogwood could tell by how heavily it was breathing. It wouldn't last long against a fresh Heracross in it's condition. The boy recalled his Teddiursa and set the egg down on a bench nearby. "Yeah! You can do it, mister," he cheered, wiping tears from his eyes. Continue on the next page.
