Off in the distance, the Pewter City Gym stood atop it's hill in all it's majesty. Dogwood circled around the hill until he found an accessible way up. About half way up, he could see the contest hall. Most everyone was leaving the building now, except for members of the staff, who probably had a lot of cleaning up to do. Hopefully Brock was already back at the gym.
It wasn't long before he made it to the front entrance. Two large, imposing doors stood before him. Dogwood placed a hand over his sash, "Ready, you guys?" He knew the Pokemon couldn't elicit a response from their current locations, but they could hear him.
He shoved open both doors at once and let himself in. The arena in the center was about as large as the stage from the contest hall, but littered with sand, rocks, and large boulders; large enough to use as efficient cover from attacks, if the need arose. An interesting way to test trainers, no doubt. A young man approached him from the other end of the arena.
"I had a feeling someone would come challenge me today, what with the contest going on. Still, who would have thought it would have been one of the coordinators from today's show. Aren't you and you're Pokemon tired?"
Dogwood assessed that this man was the gym leader, Brock. He shook his head, "No, I don't tire that easily. And my Pokemon... well, that's what Pokemon Centers are for, am I right?"
Brock just crossed his arms, "I guess we'll find out. Go ahead and take your position, over there," he finished, nodding in the direction Dogwood was to go.
Now at opposite ends of the arena, Brock threw a Pokeball into the air, "I choose you, Archeops!" The flying Pokemon soared from his Pokeball and landed on a rock, flexing his wing muscles, "Caahhhhhhp!"
Dogwood retrieved his Pokedex, "Archeops; the First Bird Pokemon. Archeops cooperate to catch their prey. This is accomplished by running, as opposed to flying, as one would expect. To get airborne, Archeops must build speed on the ground first."
"If it's a flying type, I can knock it out of the air with Hercules' Smack Down. So that settles it; I choose you, Hercules!"

"Archeops, use Aerial Ace," Brock ordered. Before Hercules had even finished coming out of his Pokeball, Archeops launched itself from it's perch and soared straight toward the Heracross.
"Hercules, dodge that attack," Dogwood shouted in vain.
The Archeops came hurdling down on Hercules, talons extended, and ripped through his defense before he even knew what hit him. It was a one-hit KO, and Hercules fainted before he'd even made a move.
"What the- Ugh," Dogwood groaned. What a horrible way to start the match.
"Heracross is part bug and part fighting, which means he takes quadruple damage from flying type attacks," Brock informed him, "You'd do well to remember that."
Dogwood returned Hercules to his Pokeball. What was Brock even doing with a flying type? This was supposed to be the Rock gym! "Ok, c'mon Atlas! You can do this! Use the rocks for cover!!"
Atlas quickly darted behind a boulder upon entering the arena. He wasn't about to make himself easy prey for the Archeops like Hercules had.
"Smart move, there," Brock said. "Archeops, use Sandstorm to hit Scraggy behind his cover!"
"Caaahhhhhhp," the Archeops cried, as a sandstorm started brewing in the arena.
"Atlas, use Payback while Archeops is setting up it's Sandstorm," Dogwood ordered. The arena was already becoming less visible, but he could still see what was going on, mostly.
Atlas leaped over the rock and came down on Archeops head with both feet, then used the flying type's head as a springboard, and lurched over another nearby boulder to resume taking cover. The Archeops stumbled forward, wide-eyed, and did it's best to stay balanced. That looked like it had hurt.
"Scraggy took cover again, Archeops. Sandstorm won't be enough to beat him at this rate. Use Double Team, like we practiced!"
Archeops started sprinting about the arena, dashing to and fro, making carbon copies of itself to confuse Atlas. There really wasn't anyway to spot the real one; they all looked alike.

"Let's see you hit Archeops now, Scraggy," Brock said, putting a hand to his chin. He was really looking forward to seeing how Atlas fared with this challenge.
"Atlas," Dogwood started, "Double Team combined with this Sandstorm is too confusing. You'll have to just hit the nearest one and hope you get lucky! Use Drain Punch!"
Atlas dashed out from his cover just as an Archeops sprinted by his rock and caught it right in the torso. The attack made contact; he'd hit the real thing. And just like that, the copies faded away. Brock nodded, but didn't say a word.
The sandstorm continued to batter Atlas relentlessly. "We need to get rid of this Sandstorm. Atlas, return," Dogwood ordered. And without skipping a beat, shouted, "The foe is weak. Charon, I choose you!"
"Lom-bray," Charon cried as he entered the arena in Atlas' place.
"Archeops, hit Lombre with Rock Slide," Brock shouted. The Archeops scurried up a larger boulder and started hurdling rocks around the area with it's talons, but Charon was easily able to avoid the falling rocks.
"Good job, Charon," Dogwood encouraged, "Now use Leech Seed!"
After dodging another flurry of incoming rocks, Charon hurled a handful of seeds at the flying Pokemon. His aim was perfect, and the seeds quickly sprouted and started draining Archeops health away.
"Now Rain Dance, Charon!"
The Lombre started doing a quizzicle little dance, swaying from left to right with his hands above his head. Was it supposed to be ballet, or was he just being a goofball. Probably the latter.
"Archeops," Brock shouted, "Now's your chance! Hit him with Aerial Ace!"
"Caaaaahp," the Archeops pounced from his perch again and reared it's powerful talons. It scored a direct hit just as Charon finished up his Rain Dance. But Archeops had dived at too sharp an angle, and wasn't able to slow down properly to land. It crashed into the rocky ground, which was quickly muddying up from the rain. Both Pokemon were lying face first in the mud, but just as things looked bleak, the Leech Seeds worked their magic. Archeops' remaining life hovered out from it's body and recovered Charon enough so that he could stand back up. Unfortunately for Brock, Archeops fainted.

Dogwood pumped his fist into the air as Brock recalled his Archeops. That evened the playing field; it was now 2-2. Charon was low on energy, though, and might not last much longer. He would have to use Leech Seed as quickly as possible and hope for the best.
"Well done," Brock nodded, reaching for his 2nd Pokeball, "Now let's see how you fare against this! Go, Golem!"
Golem landed on the field with a loud thud, splashing mud all over the place. Dogwood once again turned to his Pokedex, "Golem; the Megaton Pokemon. Golem sheds it's skin once a year. Even dynamite can't scratch it's boulder-like body."
Well, dynamite might not work, but Leech Seed certainly would. "Charon, use Leech Seed!"
"Golem, use Steamroller, and finish Lombre off before he gets a chance!"
"Golem," it cried, curling up into a ball. The Golem sped forth in it's coiled state, peeling through the mud at breakneck speed, and smashed into Charon, who flew back and smacked against a boulder before collapsing in the mud, fainted.
"Charon, no," Dogwood gasped. Brock laughed, and drew Dogwood's glare.
"No, I'm not laughing because of that," Brock said, stifling his laughter, "Look at Golem's feet."
Dogwood turned his attention to the Pokemon. There were vines tangled around it's legs. Charon managed to use the attack just before getting struck.
"Good work, Charon. Return," he said, withdrawing his last Pokeball. All that was left was Atlas now, and Brock still had one more Pokemon after this. "Come back out, Atlas! Golem has been seeded by Charon. You can do this."
"Scraggy," he cried, appearing on the field in a flash. "Scraggy scrag."
"Golem, Scraggy is the only thing standing between us and victory. Use Rollout," Brock ordered.
Golem curled back up and rolled after Atlas, but Atlas managed to dodge, barely. His tail got caught under the Golem's rampage, but the damage was minimal.
"Come back around and use Rollout again, Golem!"
"Good job, Atlas. Now confuse Golem with Double Team!"
"Scraggy~" he shouted, multiplying. Now there were four identical Scraggy's standing in a row. Golem sped up and smashed right in to-- the wrong one!

"You've got him where you want him now, Atlas! Use Drain Punch!"
The three remaining Scraggy's dashed after Golem, and all struck him at once. Of course, only one did any real damage, but Brock wouldn't know which one. Golem's HP was drained, and combined with the Leech Seeds to restore even more of Atlas' health.
"I might not know which one is the real one, but Golem felt the real one hit him," Brock smiled, "Golem, use Brick Break on the real Scraggy!"
Golem whirled around and faced the clone on his right, lashing out with a flattened palm. The attack made contact, and it knocked Atlas back. The doppelgangers faded away immediately.
"Atlas, use Double Team again," Dogwood ordered, "We need to keep the advantage!"
Atlas pounced behind a boulder, and four Scraggy's came out from behind it.
"Golem, use Body Slam on the first one that came out!"
Golem leaped into the air immediately. Dogwood smirked, "You actually spotted the right one. Unfortunately, you couldn't have picked an easier attack to counter. Atlas, use Payback!"
The fake Scraggy's spread out to give Atlas room. Then, just as Golem neared it's target, Atlas reached out, and tugged Golem out of the air, hurling him into the arena floor with a loud crash, mud flying every which way. Golem fainted.
"Well done," Brock smiled, returning Golem to it's Pokeball, "You managed to beat two of my Pokemon. This is it, the final confrontation. Go Solrock!"
"Solrock; the Meteorite Pokemon. Solrock levitates in the air, giving off a bright light as it spins. It is said to possess the ability to read the emotions of others."
"Atlas, run around the arena with the doppelgangers like Archeops did! We have to keep Brock and Solrock guessing!"
Atlas and the fakes spread out around the arena, staying close to Solrock so as not to miss an opening, but far enough away from each other so as to avoid getting hit together.
"Solrock, you need to focus! Use your psycic powers to locate the real Scraggy, and hit him with Acrobatics," Brock ordered.
Solrock chased after the nearest Scraggy, spinning it's spines around like blades, but it was unable to catch up. It was definitely faster than it looked, though. If Atlas tripped, he'd take a direct hit.
"Atlas, use Taunt to prevent Solrock from focusing!"
All four Scraggy's turned their attention to Solrock, and dashed back in it's direction. They started leaping over and around it, harmlessly springing around it's body, teasing it.
"Solrock, don't let it anger you," Brock yelled, "You need to stay focused!"
But it was too late. Solrock was losing it's cool, and was lashing out at all four of the doppelgangers, unable to land even a single blow.
"This is it, Atlas! Knock it out using Payback," Dogwood shouted triumphantly.
In it's fury, Solrock didn't realize as it lashed out right in the real Scraggy's direction. Atlas caught the Solrock by a spine, pulled, and throttled his fist forward, right into Solrock's main body.
CRAAAACK!!!!

Solrock soared through the air, landing at it's trainers feet. Solrock fainted, and Dogwood finally won.

"Congratulations," Brock said, approaching Dogwood from across the gym again, "You might have lost the contest earlier today, but you earned this gym badge."
Brock placed the glittering, gray badge in Dogwood's outstretched palm. It was octagon-shaped, and roughly uncharacteristic. But Dogwood would always remember this difficult battle when he gazed upon it in the future.
"You also receive a cash reward, and this," he said, handing Dogwood a Technical Machine. "This is TM80. It contains Rock Slide, a powerful Rock type attack that can buy you some extra time by making your foe flinch."
"And sorry I got so mad at you at the start of the match," Brock said apologetically, "You mentioned that Pokemon only needed Pokemon Centers, and it might have pressed the wrong button with me, if you know what I mean. But it's ok, you're still new to this kind of thing, am I right?"
"Yes, I just started a couple of days ago," Dogwood nodded, "My goal is to defeat Bruno, of the Elite Four."
"Aspiring," Brock smiled, "I like it. Oh, by the way, I didn't get your name."
"My name is Dogwood, the martial artist."
"Well, Dogwood the martial artist, if there's anything you ever need, feel free to ask."
"Well, actually," Dogwood said thoughtfully, "There is one thing..."

User ImageUser ImageUser Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Brock led Glint into the gym and showed him around the battlefield. It was quite impressive, with boulders scattered around on a floor of solid rock. In fact, it seemed like a floor hadn't been laid down at all, and the battlefield was open ground from beneath the building's foundations. Rock types would love to battle there.
"What do you think, Gruff?" Glint asked.
Gruff kept sniffing and snarling, sniffing and snarling. He didn't seem to like the layout very much.
"Sometimes it takes days to get the battlefield back the way I like it, when imaginative or just outright destructive trainers come in. Robin was User Imagedelicate as a chikorita leaf, though. She took out my pokémon with finesse," Brock said.
Glint nodded along with what Brock was saying. He could just imagine a chikorita prancing around between the rocks, letting off razor leafs and vine whips against Brock's rock pokémon. He hadn't come for a tour or a run through Brock's last battle, though. "So where's Stoic?"
"Stoic won't come into the gym. I'll take you through to the house. Have you eaten yet?" Brock asked.
Glint nodded, although he hadn't actually eaten since breakfast--those rice balls were back his bag. "We ate on a bench in the city, just across from Mister Miyamoto's gardens."
"Great. How is he these days? I don't think I've been to the south of the city for over a month," Brock said.
Glint thought that was a difficult question to answer. "He's sort of, crabby. Has he always been like that?"
"Yeah. Always something getting his back up, and he positively hates rock pokémon. Beggars belief he chose Pewter to settle down in. He probably did it because he likes to complain," Brock replied. He pushed a hidden door in the grey wall and led the way through into a pine-floored corridor, which seemed to lead into the attached house.
Glint held the door for Gruff and Squirbert, then walked through behind them as Brock turned left. It was brighter than he'd imagined Brock's house would be, and there wasn't as much decorative rock around as he'd expected. In fact, it looked like any normal family home.
"Do you live here alone?" Glint asked. He followed Brock through the living area and into a sparsely-decorated room, where Stoic was eating berries from a big bowl in the corner.
"Alone? Ha! I have nine brothers and sisters. Thankfully I don't have to look out for them now that my parents are both back from their journeys, so I can focus on the gym," Brock replied. "Hey there, Stoic. You getting full?"
"Rhyyyyy~" Stoic said. He turned away from the bowl and slowly approached Glint, who crouched down to give his horn a stroke.
"Do you think he'll ever battle?" Glint asked.
Brock crouched too and stroked Stoic's plated back. "I don't know. Do you think you will?"

User ImageUser ImageUser Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Glint shrugged a little. "I battle when I have to. It's not like I'm completely stoic. I took on that Team Rocket grunt, after all."
"Yes, but I don't think you appreciate battling. I don't think you understand it," Brock said.
"Maybe that's true, but I don't see that I need to. I don't think it'll help me become a better breeder," Glint replied.
"I think it will," Brock disagreed. "In fact, I think we should battle. Three on three. When you're there, on the spot, telling your pokémon where to move, what attacks to use, when to dodge, I think you'll see what I'm getting at. I think you'll learn even more about pokémon through battling User Imagethan you do through raising them."
"I don't know," Glint sighed. "Coni's never been in a battle before."
"I'll go easy on her. I'm a breeder too, after all, so I know when enough is enough," Brock said.
Glint looked down at the little oddish, still riding on Gruff's back. He didn't think she was ready to be in a gym battle. But he was tempted to have a go, anyway. Maybe he really could learn something from a battle, and maybe Coni would too. "What do you think, Coni?"
Gruff looked to Squirbert and rolled his eyes, while Coni bounced up and down happily. "Oddish odd!"
Glint nodded. That was a pretty solid 'let's do it'. "Okay. We're in. When do you want to do it?"
"No time like the present," Brock said. He jumped up and speed-walked back to the door, as though he was eager to get into the gym and get the battle underway. "Come on, let's go!"

Glint had returned Squirbert and Coni back to their pokéballs before following Brock back into the gym. When he walked in he saw that the gymleader had already taken his place at the the near end of the battlefield. He had three pokéballs and was moving them around with his fingers like stressballs.
"You know you're going to cream me, don't you?" Glint asked. He stepped up onto the rocky battlefield and walked past Brock, toward the challenger's position, at the far end of the big hall.
"Well that's one thing I want you to see--it doesn't always happen exactly the way you imagine. There's a lot goes into deciding a pokémon battle, and especially an official gym battle. We gym leaders are professionals, here to test trainers' abilities and offer them lessons in bettering themselves. That's why I want to battle. Not because I think I'll get an easy win out of you," Brock replied.
Glint was at the opposite end of the battlefield by the time Brock had finished talking . It was strange position to be in. The arena looked bigger from there, and even the centre circle looked miles away. Glint wasn't even sure his voice would carry all the way to Brock if he didn't raise it a little. "What now?"
"Now we choose which pokémon we're going to battle with. I choose Crustle," Brock said. He threw one of his three pokéballs up and a five-foot slab of a pokémon appeared on the battlefield. It slammed its pincers down on the ground, sending vibrations across the floor, to Glint's feet.
"This is going easy, huh? That thing's a monster," Glint thought. Never mind any of his pokémon, Glint wouldn't go up against the crustle himself.
PostPosted: Sun Aug 07, 2011 11:17 am

User ImageUser ImageUser Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Okay. Coni, I choose you. Knock 'em flat," Glint said. He threw Coni's pokéball up and she came up and hopped around on the battlefield.
"Oddish~odd, oddish~odd, oddish~odd," she sang.
"Coni. This is a pokémon battle. A gym battle, in fact. We're going to fight Brock's crustle."
"Odd?" Coni asked, looking up to Glint curiously.
"That thing," Glint pointed.
Coni hopped up to turn around and looked up at the big crustle. "Oh~h~h~h~dd~" Coni cooed.User Image
Brock peered out from behind his crustle and cupped his hands around his mouth. "Alright, here we go. Crustle, use swagger!"
Glint squinted his eyes and watched Crustle closely to see what it did. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to do much, aside breathe in and out a strange breath of odd-smelling air. Glint wasn't sure, but he thought it was a confusing attack. Coni was dancing about though, so it was hard to tell if it had had any effect. "Coni, are you okay?"
"Glint, you have to giver her an order!" Brock called.
"But she only knows one attack. She could never bring down a crustle," Glint replied. Just as he finished talking, Crustle started to walk forward and immediately smashed into the ground. The whole gym shook with the force of the fall. "Whoa! What on Earth was that?"
"Looks to me like that was a grass knot," Brock replied. "Look there at Crustle's feet."
Glint looked at the rock floor and saw two that thick blades of grass had somehow sprouted up through it and tied themselves together, then snagged Crustle's foot and tripped it up. It was a grass knot. Glint raised his eyebrows. "How did you even learn that?"
"Sometimes pokémon know moves from birth, that are passed down in their genes," Brock replied. "I think it's like instinct for them to use some moves."
Glint nodded. He already knew about moves being passed down from parents to children. The idea that some pokémon used moves by instinct alone seemed sensible, too. "Alright, Coni, now absorb."
"Absorb's a nothing move, Glint," Brock said. "But you've issued the order now. Crustle, bug bite!"
Crustle marched forward, free of the grass knot, and its tiny mouth chomped down on Coni's leaves with a gnash gnash gnash.
"Odd!" Coni cried. She used absorb on the massive pokémon, but it didn't seem to have any effect at all.
"Now Crustle, x-scissor!" Brock ordered. He seemed to be getting into it, and his pokémon was too--it lifted its pincers, then lashed them down onto Coni in a cross motion.
"Oh~" Coni whimpered. Then she fell backwards, unconscious.
Glint ran forward and scooped her up off the ground. "Are you okay Coni? Does it hurt?"

User ImageUser ImageUser Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Odd..." Coni muttered. She looked up at Glint with her little, red eyes and smiled. She seemed okay, despite being hacked down by the giant crustle.
"Glint, this is an official battle. You shouldn't run out onto the field like that, you could get hurt," Brock said.
"I'd rather I got hurt than my pokémon," Glint argued.
"Then you don't understand battles yet. Send out your next pokémon," Brock replied. "Crustle, back off a little."
Crustle took a few steps backwards, to be ready for the next battle, but Glint wasn't sure he wanted to continue battling. He didn't see the point.User Image
Ping.
"Squirtle!" Squirbert shouted. He toddled forward, further onto the battlefield, and struck an aggressive pose.
Glint sighed. He guessed if Squirbert wanted to battle, he wouldn't stand in the way. "Okay. Use rain dance. That should be nice and safe."
"Crustle, swagger!" Brock ordered.
As Squirbert did a little dance and dark clouds began to gather up near the ceiling of the gym, Crustle let out another confusing breath, which definitely hit Squirbert--that was clear just from looking at him.
"Squir?" Squirbert asked, as he span around, ending up facing his trainer rather than his opponent.
"Squirbert, turn around," Glint chuckled.
"Squir?" Squirbert asked. Then, though he was confused, he quickly pulled his head, arms and legs into his shell, before rapidly spinning around.
"Squirbert, what are you doing?" Glint laughed. He watched as the tiny turtle span and span, closer and closer to a big rock. If he wasn't careful he'd hit his tail on--
"Squir!" Squirbert wailed. His tail smashed against the big rock and he immediately stopped spinning.
"Now Crustle, poison jab," Brock ordered. His pokémon scuttled forward, then jabbed one of its glowing pincers at Squirbert's shell. It did a fair amount of damage, and Squirbert didn't appreciate it--he sprang up out of his shell and erupted.
"Squirtle squirt! Squirtle squirt squirt squirtle!" As Squirbert complained, his injuries seemed to clear up a little. The big graze on his tail definitely calmed a little, as rain started to fall on it.
"Hey, it looks like your Squirtle's healed by rain. They call that rain dish," Brock noted.
"Rain dish, huh?" Glint said. He quickly looked for his pokédex in his bag, to see if Grampa had written anything about it before.
"Glint," Brock chuckled. "Don't just abandon your pokémon in the middle of a battle."
Just as Glint was going to defend himself, Squirbert turned on him too. "Squirtle squirt squirt squirtle! Squirtle squir squirt squirt!"

User ImageUser ImageUser Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Okay," Glint said, "I'm sorry. Squirbert, do you know scald?"
Squirbert nodded, then faced his opponent and let out a steaming jet of boiling water.
"Crustle! No!" Brock blurted. The giant pokémon shuddered, then collapsed onto its belly.
"Is that it?" Glint asked.
Brock returned his pokémon, with a sly grin on his face. "Well done, Crustle. I think we're getting through to him. Now it's your turn, Aggron!"
The next pokéball flew and released another huge pokémon. This one User Imagewas taller than Crustle, and while it wasn't as bulky, it had massive horns and razor, shiny, clamping jaws.
"There's no way you can beat it head-on, Squirbert. We have to think of a way to hinder it," Glint said. He was making it all up as he went along, but he thought it made sense--there really was no way Squirbert could just attack the aggron and win. They needed tactics if they were going to beat it.
"Squirtle squirt?" Squirbert asked.
Glint didn't know what he said, but if they were understanding each other, it was worth a shot. Glint nodded. "Go for it!"
Squirbert sucked in a breath and then, "squi~i~i~i~r~" he yawned it out.
"What? That's it?" Glint asked. The giant aggron wasn't going to be put off by a yawn. If anything being yawned at was only going to anger it.
"Aggron, double-edge!" Brock shouted. His pokémon rushed toward Squirbert, then leaped up.
Squirbert flinched. His eyes narrowed. Lips shrank to an 'ooh'. Hands dropped to his sides. "Squirtle?"
Boooooom~!
Glint, Gruff and even Brock cringed. As the dust cleared, Glint leaned forward, stunned. "Holy mother of glory. Squirbert? Squirbert?"
"Aghhhhhhh~" the aggron said, satisfied. It stood up, then frowned, looking down at its belly. Squirbert was squished flat against it, eyes a whirl and tongue hanging loose. Aggron peeled him off its body and dropped him to the floor.
Glint stopped himself from running onto the field this time. He used his pokéball instead. "Squirbert, return. Gruff, get in there. Let's show this walking mountain how it's done."
Gruff nodded, then pounced forward onto the battlefield.
"Flamethrower!" Glint ordered.
Gruff ran toward the aggron, then quickly changed direction. Aggron turned to follow Gruff around the battlefield, but it was slow-moving, so Gruff easily hit it with his flamethrower.

User ImageUser ImageUser Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Aghhhhh!" Aggron growled.
"Heavy slam, now!" Brock ordered. With his pokémon being so huge and Gruff being so small, the move could potentially be tremendously damaging.
Glint knew as much, and somehow his brain managed to process the information in rapid time and got his mouth to spit out an order; "Gruff, dodge it!"
Gruff dived forward. Unfortunately Aggron was so huge, Gruff would've needed at least two leaps to get out of the way. His hind legs got caught under Aggron's body and he whelped in pain. Thankfully the ground had User Imagebeen softened up by the rain, but now that it was stopping there'd be no more lucky escapes.
"Gruff, use reversal," Glint ordered. He watched intently as all the damage his pokémon had taken formed in a ball of energy, which Gruff released directly at the aggron's face. It did some damage... but Aggron didn't react to it. In fact, Aggron hadn't moved since landing its heavy slam attack.
"Aggron, wake up!" Brock shouted.
Glint looked at Squirbert's pokéball and wondered out loud, "did that yawn put it to sleep?"
"Gruff ruff!" Gruff barked.
Glint snapped back to the match. "Flamethrower! Make it a sustained one, it'll do massive damage."
Gruff nodded, then let out a massive burst of fire. It hit the aggron, then started to envelop it.
"Aggron, return," Brock said. He withdrew his pokémon from the battle and spoke to the ball it'd returned to.
Glint wondered why he'd pulled it out already. "I didn't think gym leaders could switch out?"
"We can't. I just knew Aggron had had enough of that flamethrower. You see, it's not all about giving it all you've got on the offensive. It's about knowing when to give in, too. Aggron could be asleep for five whole minutes, and I'm not going to stand here and let it take all that damage from Gruff - or let Gruff pour so much energy into the inevitable win - when I could ease the strain on both of them by conceding defeat," Brock explained. "And now I'm down to my last pokémon. Too bad your pokémon's a fire type, or you could have been walking away from here with a Boulder Badge."
"We still might," Glint said, though he didn't really believe it. Gruff is weak against rock moves, and Brock was a rock-type specialist. Glint was under no illusions that he might have a chance of winning.
"Heh. I think you're beginning to understand. Lunatone, go! Use hypnosis!" Brock shouted. His third and final pokéball popped open in mid-air and a lunatone came out and began hovering around, left and right, trying to disorientate Gruff. It looked like it was starting to work, too. Glint knew he had to intervene.
"Gruff, dive behind one of the boulders!"
"Grrrrrruff~" Gruff said. He ran over to the nearest rock and ducked behind it, hiding from the hypnosis attack.

Gruff nodded, then pounced out of his hiding place and released a blue flame from his mouth. It hit Lunatone and burned it, just as planned. However, Gruff was now right in its opponent's line of fire.
"Lunatone, psychic," Brock ordered.
The psychic-type pokémon picked Gruff up using only the power of its mind. It was an incredibly powerful attack, with no counter as far as Glint knew. The battle was over.User Image
"Okay, that's enough," Glint said.
Brock's Lunatone immediately let Gruff down to the ground, and he scampered back to Glint's side.
"You see what I mean?" Brock asked.
Glint crouched to stroke Gruff's back. "What do you think, Gruff?"
"Grawr," Gruff replied. He didn't seem to mind either way, as far as Glint could tell. Squirbert seemed to quite enjoy it, and Coni... well, Coni never seemed to have her feet on the ground. She seemed to be ecstatic, whatever she was doing.
"Lunatone wasn't exactly thrilled to be battling when I first got it, but some practising with Solrock and soon it learned that there's more to it than just trying to knock out your opponent. If that's all there was in battling, I wouldn't be a trainer either, never mind a gym leader," Brock said. "I think you've got the perfect attitude for being a trainer. You just need practise, like Lunatone did."
"Maybe," Glint said. He wasn't sure if he was reluctant for any real reason, or if he just didn't think he should become a trainer. He suspected the latter was true, but he didn't really want to think about it. Certainly not while stood in a gym, right next to a gym leader. "But anyway, I have to take Coni back to the daycare now, since Mister Miyamoto doesn't think she's good enough for him."
"He doesn't?" Brock exclaimed. "That old man really is crabby. I thought he only held grudges against rock, flying, bug, fire and ice types."
What Brock said helped Glint recall what he'd been saying to Mister Miyamoto earlier in the day. "Oh, hey, he was telling me about a problem he had with all sorts of pokémon going into his gardens and stealing berries. I'd suggested he use a rock type to chase them away, since all the types he's worried about are weak to rock, but he said that no rock types he'd tried would stay in the garden because of all the grass around."
"Ah, so you think he needs a rock type who isn't weak to grass?" Brock realised.
"Mm. Do you know any?" Glint asked, standing up again.
"Cradily are fine with grass, but weak to ice and bugs. I wouldn't let mine out and about anyway--there'd be such a fuss. I do have one other pokémon who could help, though," Brock said. He tossed one of his pokéballs up and down in his hand. "Only problem is, I suspect he might be asleep."

~Edward Inuzuka~

Ed walked into the gym with his pokemon team and was surprised when he saw that Brock wasnt in the gym. 'I had heard that Gary was one for traveling but i didnt expect this from Brock....well it cant be helped'. As he was deep in thought one of the gym trainers approached him and said "Are you looking for Brock? He went out for a bit with somebody but in the meantime ill be your opponent. That is unless your chicken". "You must have a lot of guts to challenge me kid. I accept your challenge, but im warning you....I wont go easy just because your tiny" he teased. The schoolkid took offense to the tiny comment and got fired up for the fight. GRRRR It'll be a 1v1 match. Lets show him that size doesnt matter! Go Geodude! he shouted as a rather tough looking geodude popped out of its pokeball. "Thats a strong looking geodude but its not match for Ace. I choose you, Ace!" Ed shouted as his newly caught pidgey popped out of the pokeball. The trainer was surprised and said, "Pidgey is a flying type. Dont you know that their weak against rock types? Or are you really as dumb as you look". Ed was offended and decided he would let Ace do the talking. "Show em up Ace! Double Team!". Ace flew up and zipped across the battlefield making copies of itself that were spread out giving him a lesser chance of getting hit. The trainer sent his geodude to attack the copies with rock blast. The geodude began taking out copies with a flurry of rocks thrown with a good amount of force. "Quick Ace hit him with Toxic". Ace flew by the geodude and covered him with toxins badly poisoning it. Geodude used that opportunity to knocked pidgey away with a brick break attack. Even though it wasnt very effective it hit Ace hard and he flew back up to await its next attack. "Ace keep using double edge to overwhelm it and then hit it with a full power Steel Wing". Ace made many carbon copies of itself as the geodude went with a new strategy. Its trainer made it use smack down attacks to knock the copies out one by one with pin point accuracy. Ace charged at it head on and before breaking off and circling around it, made another carbon copy. When the geodude attacked it with another brick break attack Ace dive bombed it and hit it while its guard was lowered.
