By the time the trio emerged from the forest, it was late in the afternoon. There was a short path ahead of them, and right around the bend was Pewter City. Dogwood thanked Hercules for showing him the way, and then returned the two Pokemon to their Pokeballs.
He followed the short path, and there it was; Pewter City! It was a very civilized town, with paved roads and fenced in yards. Off in the distance, he could see the Gym up on a hill. Of course, before he took on the gym, he needed to find a Pokemon Center. He followed the road and spotted it instantly. Pokemon Centers usually didn't blend in very well, and this one was no exception.
But before he could go in, he was stopped by an old woman, probably in her late 60's. "Excuse me," she said, "But did you get that costume from a man named Theodore?"
Dogwood was surprised, because he'd forgotten he was wearing it. It was surprisingly comfortable. "Yes, ma'am. Theodore gave me this costume, and I forgot to give it back..." He paused. How did she- "You wouldn't happen to be his wife, would you?"
The woman smiled, "Yes, that I am."
"Oh, good, then I can leave this costume with you." Dogwood removed the costume piece by piece, then handed it over to the old woman. "Tell Theodore I said thank you."
The old woman nodded appreciatively and walked away.
Dogwood had been wearing his clothes from before under the costume, of course. The egg was still in it's carriage on his back. The costume had a nice, arched back, so there was plenty of room for the egg, and he hadn't even needed to remove it. After some minor adjustments to his clothing, he headed in to the Pokemon Center.

After a short respite, Dogwood led his Pokemon away from the Pokemon Center. The sun would be setting, and he wanted to get in some training before he took on Brock. They found a nice partially fenced-in lot where the grass was soft, and would cushion any grapples they practiced.
He set the egg down in a bed of grass a few meters away so as not to accidentally have it trampled, and turned to his Pokemon.
"Alright, listen up. Brock is the gym leader of Pewter City. He fights using rock Pokemon. That's about all I know, but he's a gym leader, so we can't be too prepared. Now--" he paused. "Hercules, what are you staring at?"
Dogwood looked over at what had the Heracross' attention. Charon was rolling around in the grass, grinning. "Guys! Pay attention here," he boomed.
Charon sat up and Heracross stood to attention. Training Pokemon was similar to what he imagined training children was like. Of course, they were technically children. Maybe he was overreacting. At least Atlas was paying attention. He probably wanted to redeem himself after trying to steal Dogwood's supper.
"Alright, time for an oral lesson in martial arts. Most martial arts can be shoehorned into two degrees. Hard and soft. Hard is about forthright attacking, and relying on your strength. Soft is about using your foe's strength against them. The way Atlas defeated Scizor earlier today was a form of Soft martial arts. His attack did more damage because he was able to utilize his foe's forward momentum."
He turned his attention to Atlas directly, "I'd like to see more of that, Atlas. You did great. I want you to try and focus on soft martial arts. So go ahead and practice with Hercules for a bit."

Atlas forgot Faint Attack and learned Payback.

Atlas and Hercules stood up and started sparring. This worked well for Dogwood, too, since he wasn't sure what Hercules was capable of yet. But that would have to wait for a moment. He turned to face Charon.
"Charon, your moveset, well, it isn't actually anything a human could feasibly do. If I knew how to better shoot ice from my mouth maybe I could give you some tips. But unfortunately, I can't."
Charon looked displeased, as if he had been given up on. Dogwood crouched down and pat him, "But, I had an idea." Charon brightened up. "You just need to harness your powers to manifest themselves more physically. If you could bring Bubblebeam out and somehow throw some physical momentum behind it, imagine how much harder you'd hit. Same with Icy Wind. I'd love to see what you'd be capable of if you fought with your body more. You're fast, so we could make use of that." Charon's expression brightened up. He had a newfound glee about him.

Dogwood stood back up, "See if you can muster something up here. I'm gonna check on Hercules and Atlas." On the other side of the lot, Hercules and Atlas were going at it. Every time Hercules thrust his horn forward, Atlas would pull it down, heaving Hercules entire body in an arch, and flipping him on his back. Of course, Hercules didn't seem to mind. Maybe he was intentionally creating an opening.
Dogwood thought this was as good a time as any and started studying up on Hercules' moveset. He took out the Pokedex and flipped through the digital pages until he landed on the right one.
A little Heracross was seen thrusting his horn into a target. Megahorn.
The little Heracross dashed forward with a claw. Vacuum Wave.
Then it Hoisted a target into the air, which came crashing down. Seismic Toss.
And finally, in the last one, it was shown bringing a small boulder down on an airborne target. Smack Down.
Hercules was quite formidable. he looked up at the two Pokemon, still going through the motions. Dogwood was positive Hercules was doing it on purpose.
"Hercules," Dogwood shouted, "This time try and counter one of Atlas' attacks."
Atlas and Hercules stopped fighting and listened to Dogwood than turned back to face eachother. This time Atlas made the first move. He threw a fist at Hercules' head, but Hercules ducked. His horn slipped right between Atlas' exposed legs, and hurled the Scraggy through the air in one bold movement. That must have been Seismic Toss. "Good job, Hercules."

An hour had passed, and the sun was beginning to set. A few kids had gathered around to watch from a distance. Dogwood walked over to them. They were standing on the other side of the short picket fence, but they barely stood above it. "Enjoying the show?" Dogwood smiled.
One of the girls moved forward, "Wow, mistuh. Awe you gonna be in the Pokemon Contest tomowwow? You'we Pokemon awe so cool!"
"Pokemon contest," Dogwood asked sincerely, "What is the Pokemon Contest?" Dogwood wondered if it was like the Pokeathlon, a marathon for Pokemon that took place in Johto.
The girl pointed towards a building in the distance. It was an extravagant building, with decorated windows and a big banner outside that said "POKEMON CONTEST: TOMORROW! DON'T MISS IT!"
Dogwood wasn't unknown to the world of theatrics. He'd performed in a number of martial arts shows. They were quite enjoyable, and he was always a crowd pleaser. "Alright, I'll join the contest tomorrow."
"YAY!" the children squealed. "What's you'we name, mistuh?"
"My name is Dogwood, the martial arts master!" Kids were always enthusiastic about this type of thing, so he liked to play it up. "Woooow," they all chimed together.

The sun had now set, and the children were long since gone. "Alright guys, time to wrap it up. Since there's a contest tomorrow, it's likely that Brock will be in the crowd, and not at his gym. So we'll enter the contest, impress Brock, and then he'll have a fight with us." Sometimes Dogwood impressed himself with his bright ideas. He returned his Pokemon to their Pokeballs, picked up his egg, and headed for the Pokemon Center to sleep.

Atlas ran out of the museum, tears welling up in his eyes. He dashed down the stone stairs and sped off into the nearby woods. That old man was right; he was nothing but a delinquent. Why did he even try to redeem himself? There was no place for him here with humans. He should have stayed with Nuzleaf, as much as he hated to admit it.
Nuzleaf; just the thought of that vile Pokemon was enough to make his blood boil. If Atlas was a delinquent, then Nuzleaf was the devil. That Pokemon enjoyed tormenting others. Sure, at times, they really did need the food they stole, but too often it was just because Nuzleaf was sadistic. The Omanyte egg was the perfect example. What need did they have for an egg? So in retrospect, no, Atlas didn't regret leaving Nuzleaf's gang.
He found himself punching a tree as he thought more about it. Nuzleaf was despicable. He hadn't always been their leader, either. They used to all follow around a different Pokemon; Absol. Back then, they only stole necessities, and they did so discreetly, so as to not get caught. The gang was larger then, too. Absol was a much better leader, and Nuzleaf had no right to take his place. As soon as he did, the whole gang fell apart. Many of them deserted, or got caught because Nuzleaf wasn't discreet enough.
Atlas stayed with them for as long as he had because he cherished the memories of Absol and the gang. They were his family for the longest time. But Nuzleaf went and tarnished all of it, everything. Well, Atlas had a new family. Dogwood was his leader now, and Nuzleaf could go suck on a Fire Stone for all he cared.
Atlas started punching the tree harder. He was so lost in thought, he didn't even notice the footsteps approaching him from behind.

"What did that tree ever do to you?"
Atlas spun around quickly, eyes wide. Dogwood had followed him from the museum and into the woods. Not that it was too difficult. The Scraggy was making a lot of noise beating on that tree.
"S-scraggy... Scraggy," it stuttered. Atlas lowered his head, and stared at the ground. He was humiliated about getting caught losing his temper, and angry about what the curator had said.
Dogwood stepped toward him and placed a hand on his Pokemon's head, patting him. "Don't worry, Atlas. I know you didn't steal that egg because you wanted to," he smiled. "Why else would you have brought it to me?"
Atlas brightened up some. It felt good, to be understood.
"And don't worry about that egg," Dogwood reassured, "We'll get it back, in due time." Atlas grinned heartily, "Scrag!!"
"But first, we have a contest to take part in." He reached into his sash and pulled out a Pokeball. A second later, Atlas was gone, and Dogwood walked back to Pewter City's contest hall.

Rebecca decided it was her time to shine she ran out on the route to Diglett Cave. She wanted a ground type and since that was the only type she minded. Spark wobbled behind her as she checked her bag and saw ten pokeballs that Ryan had given her before she left. "aww how sweet of him she walked toward the end of the city not looking back and running into a guy that was heading for the contest hall. "oof she fell over backwards watch where you going Douche!"

[[ooc: Ahhah, you know what? I forgot to link my last post. I was already at the Contest Hall by now... Ahh, what the heck. I'll improvise.]]

Dogwood was nearing the contest hall when a girl and her Squirtle carelessly rammed into him. The girl lost her balance, and fell over, then started shrieking at him.
"I-I'm sorry. Here, let me help you."
Why was he apologizing? Certainly, what she lacked in manners, she made up for in audacity. Oh well, there was something humorous about the situation, so he could shrug it off. Dogwood offered his hand to the girl.

"Thanks for the ride, Tom. See you later" Sean waved at that old man and his Charizard, they were a friend of Ed, his uncle who lives in Cinabar island, lucky to him because tom was on his way to pewter city, so he could use some ride. He streched his arm and look around, poor Sean. He forgot to take his pokenav which was given to him yesterday.
"No way, Im lost in the very first day of my journey? Man, My day can't be better!"
He sighed and look around, there was a crowd over there, but he wasn't sure that he'd found someone who wants to help him to find his way to the gym, finally, his eyes caught to people about his age were talking and looking friendly, without hesitation, he went to the yellow-haired guy. He poked him and tried to make this 'friendly expression' on his face.
"Um, excuse me, can you help me?"

The girl was still yelling at Dogwood when he felt something poke his rib. Dogwood whirled around on his heel and faced another teenager. This one was a boy, but seemed closer to his age. The weirdest thing was, he was wearing a fur-trimmed coat and a scarf, among some other winter gear. Wasn't he burning up in all that?
"I'm sorry. I couldn't hear you over all this noise," he apologized, barely able to hear himself. "Is there something you need me to help you with," he asked hesitantly. The boy's expression was halfway to a smile, but looked very forced. He seemed almost entirely out of his element here. "I'm kind of in a hurry, so..."

"Oh hello Glint. Have you made it to Pewter yet?" Grampa asked.
"Yeah, I just hit the cobblestone path," Glint replied, looking left and right as the trees thinned out.
"What took you so long? Usually you zip right to your destination on your bike and zip right back. Did you get lost in Mount Moon?"
"A couple of things slowed me down, but we got through it. Met a few nice people, a couple of not-so-nice ones, and - you'll like this - we now have a squirtle travelling with us," Glint said.User Image
"You don't say! I thought you weren't up for catching pokémon?"
"Well, the short version is that a machop caught him using one of my pokéballs. I told him he could go free if he wanted, but he seems to want to stick around for now."
"Excellent news. I knew you had trainer blood in you, just like your mother," Grampa said, with a smile coming across in his voice.
"Well, maybe," Glint said. "Anyway, reason I called, do you have anything more on this address? Are there any landmarks I should look out for?"
"If I remember rightly, it's one block north of the contest hall, which should be close by," Grampa replied. "If Mister Miyamoto isn't there he'll be at work, down at the gardens in the south of the city."
"I think I see it," Glint said, looking southward. "Should I check his home first?"
"Mm, he might be there. He tends to work in the afternoons, so you might just catch him before he sets off," Grampa said.
Glint nodded. "Okay. I'll head there first. Is everything okay at the daycare without me?"
"Just about!" Grampa chuckled. "It's been relatively quiet. Just the usual customers popping in."
"Oh, did you have a barefoot fighter named Dogwood drop in yet?" Glint asked.
"No, no, I think I'd remember a barefooted fighter," Grampa said.
"Oh, you'd remember him alright--he's got an omanyte egg with him," Glint revealed. "We camped out together last night, with a bunch of other trainers. He said he might drop in so you could give his egg the once-over. I looked at it and everything seemed okay, but I told him you knew more about omanyte than I do."
"It's been a long while since I handled an omanyte egg. Perhaps I'll give Professor Cypress a call, at the Pewter Museum of Science."
"Oh, I wouldn't do that. Apparently an omanyte egg was stolen from a courier on his way to the museum. Dogwood isn't a thief or a liar, but I think Professor Cypress would jump to that conclusion, and then you might have an incident on your hands," Glint explained.
"You're not getting messed up with the wrong crowd are you, boy?"
"Grampa," Glint sighed. "When you see Dogwood - assuming he still pops in to see you - ask him how his gym battle with Misty went. You'll see just from talking to him that he's a good person."
"Okay, that I will. Now you get to Mister Miyamoto's house. Love from Gran. Goodbye, Glint," Grampa said.
Glint started walking northward, where he saw a building he suspected was the contest hall. "Alright. Love to Gran. Bye-bye."

User ImageUser ImageUser Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Glint walked to the north, past the contest hall - outside which people were starting to gather for the day's events - and toward a quiet street where all the houses were made of polished, grey stones. He looked at the posts outside each property for the number he was looking for. "Do you see it, Gruff? It must be around here somewhere."
"Oddish?" Coni asked. She was still sat on Gruff's back, looking up and around at the world.
"That's right, Coni, we'll be at your owner's house soon. Are you excited?" Glint asked.
"Odd?" Coni enquired.User Image
"I'm looking forward to meeting him myself," Glint said. He walked along the street with Gruff at his side, looking at each post for the right number. "I don't understand this numbering system. You'd think it'd be odds and evens, like in Cerulean."
"Gruff ruff," Gruff said. He looked across to the other side of the cobblestone street, at a house with flowers around the doorway.
"You think that's it?" Glint asked. He looked up and down the street, but there were no vehicles in sight. Rush hour must have been over already. "Come on. Let's go see."

It certainly looked like the right place. The flowers were the biggest clue, before the number on the post confirmed it. Glint pushed the gate open and walked up the stony path.
"Oddish?" Coni asked.
"Yeah, this is it," Glint nodded. He moved up onto the wide and long flint step and tapped on the pane of stained-glass in the top panel of the wooden door. On the other side of it there were figures moving around. They seemed to stop and turn when Glint knocked. They were probably startled. Glint stepped back, so that he wouldn't be in the man's face when the door was opened.
A lock clunked, then the doorhandle moved down and the door was pulled open.
"Sceptile?"
"Whoa," Glint gasped. It wasn't a man, it was a sceptile. A pretty tall one--it matched Glint's height and may even have had a couple of inches on him. "Hey there, Sceptile. Is Mister Miyamoto home?"
The sceptile nodded, then sort of waddled backwards, careful not to knock anything over with its tail as it turned around. "Sceptie?"
"Yes? A visitor?" Mister Miyamoto called back. He shuffled down the stairs, always right foot first, clinging tight to the banister.
"Good morning, Mister Miyamoto," Glint said, informally bowing. "I'm Glint Hatcher. I brought your oddish."
"Ah, I should've guessed," Miyamoto said, as he reached the bottom of the stairs. "You look just like your grandfather--and your mother, not surprisingly. 'Cept the hair, of course. You should get that cut, young man."

"Hmm. 'Little' is the word. And you say 'she'?" Miyamoto asked.
Glint nodded. "Gran called her Conifer. I've been calling her Coni, but obviously she's yours, so we didn't program anything into the pokéball. I've got it here somewhere."
"Well then, hand it over," Miyamoto said. He shooed his sceptile away from the door, then stepped outside, reaching his hand to Glint to take the pokéball.
Glint checked he'd got the right one, then placed it in Miyamoto's palm.User Image
"Hmm, nice and shiny. New pokéballs have a strange feel to them, don't they?"
"I never really handle pokéballs, so I hadn't thought about it," Glint said. He pulled out Squirbert's and rubbed it with his thumb. "It's Gran who gets pokémon into their pokéballs and prepares them for their customers. I got these recently, but they were my grandpa's, so they're not exactly what I'd call new."
"I'll tell him you said that," Miyamoto scoffed.
Glint forced out a laugh and rubbed the back of his neck. He didn't know how Grampa would react if Mister Miyamoto did pass on what he'd said. Usually old age wasn't an acceptable topic of conversation with Grampa. He wanted to carry on working all his days and anyone who brought up retirement with him needed 'a punch up the bracket' because they 'didn't see sense'. Miyamoto seemed old enough to retire too, but he still worked. "Hey, I mean, uh. So Mister Miyamoto, what line of work are you in? Grampa said something about a garden to the south."
"That's right. Come along, Joscep. You may join us. Along with your... mhh... growlithe, I suppose," Miyamoto said.
"Oh. Sure," Glint agreed. He followed alongside the old man, with Gruff - Coni still on his back - following behind him, and the sceptile behind them. "Hope you don't mind my saying, but I got the impression from your tone that you don't like growlithe. Am I right?"
"Yes," Miyamoto said, without hesitation. "I have a dislike for all fire types, since they keep burning down my crops. I specialise in grass types. Flying, poison, bug, ice and fire. Nuts to them all."
"I'm sure they don't burn down your crops on purpose," Glint replied. He held the gate open for everyone to walk out onto the street, continuing conversation over the waist-height, ivy-covered fence.
"No. They sneak in to eat the berries, same as the flying types. It all ends in a big brawl and the crops take all the damage."
"Oh, I see. I guess you must've already tried having a rock type defend the garden," Glint figured.
"Whadda you think this is, city of clay? Of course I tried rock types," Miyamoto snapped. "I tried a golem, I tried an onyx, I tried a rhydon, but they're all scared of the plants! One little leaf lands on them and they're off like a shot. Only grass types are worthy of my time."
