New trainers can get their first Pokémon and Pokédex here. Or to just seek out the Pokémon Professor.

Dogwood had already reached Pallet Town. It had only been, what, half an hour since he left Indigo Plateau? He was making great time. He'd probably have a Pokemon fully trained by the end of the day at this rate. Then Bruno would teach him. But first he had to find Professor Oak. Fortunately the town was quite small, and he found the lab within minutes. Inside were shelves lined with Pokeballs and large, funny looking devices. The Professor was speaking to someone over a telecom. Dogwood could see a child on the screen, most likely a trainer. He didn't want to interrupt, so he waited for the Professor to finish. Finally, Professor Oak waved goodbye to the screen and turned it off. He approached Dogwood, "Hello there. I am Professor Oak. Is there something I can help you with today?" "Yes, sir. My name is Dogwood. I hail from Cianwood City, and I would like a Pokemon." "Cianwood?" Oak chuckled, "Why did you come all the way out here from Cianwood? Professor Elm is much closer." "I came straight here from Indigo Plateau. Bruno of the Elite Four wants me to train a Pokemon." Professor Oak examined Dogwood for a moment, "Dogwood, you are obviously a capable fellow, if you made it here from Indigo Plateau without a Pokemon partner. How would you like to take on the Pokemon League challenge?" "W-what? No. I'm not a Pokemon Trainer. I just want Bruno to teach me." "And what better way to prove your worth than by beating him in a Pokemon battle?" Dogwood hadn't thought of it like that. If he could beat Bruno in head-to-head combat, he'd have to acknowledge him as a master trainer. Professor Oak saw determination flash in Dogwood's distant gaze and handed him a device. It was some kind of handheld computer, or a cellphone. "This is your Pokedex. Any Pokemon you encounter on your journey will automatically be recorded on it." Oak walked over to his desk, and pulled open a drawer, "Unfortunately, I don't have any Pokemon readily available to give you on such short notice. But I can give you a few empty Pokeballs. You'll just have to catch a wild Pokemon on your own." After being handed six shiny new Pokeballs, Dogwood asked, "Where should I go once I catch a Pokemon?" "Oh, you'll probably want to head to Pewter City and challenge Brock, the Rock type gym leader. But make sure you catch a number of Pokemon on the way. You'll never win with a single Pokemon." Dogwood bowed to Professor Oak and thanked him for everything before heading out. Things had taken an unexpected twist. Was he really going to be a good trainer? Good enough to defeat Bruno? Only time would tell.

~* Jetta Moon ~* Jetta knocked on the door of the laboratory and waited patiently for someone to answer. She hoped she wasn't too early. It was going on for ten o'clock, so she was sure the professor would be out of bed. There was a chance, however, that he hadn't finished feeding all the pokémon on his land their breakfast. Jetta supposed that if that was the case, she'd just have to wait. A second later the door was pulled ajar and a tan face looked out to her with a smile. "Hello, can I help you?""Hi," Jetta smiled back. "I'm Jetta Moon. I e-mailed a few days ago to ask if I could visit.""Oh yes, yes, come on in," the man said. He didn't sound like the Professor Oak Jetta had listened to on the radio. Perhaps he was one of the Professor's assistants. Jetta walked inside as the man pulled the door open. "This place is huge.""It is on the large side, yes. That's why I'm here--to help out with the upkeep.""So you're a janitor?" Jetta figured. "Me? No! I'm an assistant. Don't you see the white coat and glasses?""Some janitors wear white coats and glasses. I don't want to stereotype anyone," Jetta explained herself. "Because you're an assistant, does that mean you can help me start my journey?""I could," the assistant nodded, "but Professor Oak wouldn't like that. He's enthusiastic about sending new trainers off on their journeys with as much good advice as he can give. I don't think he'd appreciate if I stole that thunder.""I don't suppose he would," Jetta agreed. "Come inside and take a seat and I'll get the Professor. I think he's in his research room," the assistant said. He closed the door behind Jetta and led her through the open-plan ground floor, to a lounging area with a couple of sofas around a long coffee table. Jetta perched on the edge of one of the sofa seats and twiddled her hair around her fingers, while looking around the room. There was a big computer-like terminal against the back wall, with a screen the size of at least four regular PC monitors mounted to the wall, and a regular monitor in the usual place. It looked like there was an e-mail system open, and intrigued to see, Jetta leaned forward to scan for her own name among the 'from' column. Four of the e-mails were flagged, and Jetta's eyes were automatically drawn to them. The first was from a boy called Reginald Finch, and the subject was 'Reminder: I will visit your lab tomorrow to receive my starte...'. Jetta guessed that in full it said 'starter pokémon', but it was such a long subject it had been truncated. Next one down was from Petra Freiberg with the subject 'Squirtle'. The third flagged message was Jetta's, titled simply 'Dear Sir'. The fourth, which appeared in full, in a sort of preview window, was from 'Solomon', with no surname. From reading the e-mail Jetta got the impression the guy was a spoiled brat, who knew what he wanted and wasn't going to let anyone have any peace until he got it. As Jetta reached the end of the e-mail she began to wonder whether the others had been and gone yet. Then she heard a ruckus, which answered her query. They were all here, and they were not happy that Jetta had kept them waiting.

~* Jetta Moon ~* Jetta stood up as Professor Oak walked down the stairs behind her, orbited by three young people between ten and eighteen years of age. They all seemed very concerned that they hadn't received their pokémon yet. Professor Oak was keeping his cool pretty well and answered every complaint that came at him as calmly as a slowpoke. "Ah, Jetta Moon. You're the last," Oak said. "I'm sorry I didn't get here sooner," Jetta apologised. "Don't be silly. You came all the way from the Hoenn region, so I think you're entitled to be an hour late," Oak replied. And although she should have taken heart from that, she was actually a little annoyed--nobody had told her to arrive by a certain time. "Now that she's finally here can we please get our pokémon!?" the only girl of the three trainers requested. She must have been Petra--the girl who wanted the squirtle. "Yes, yes, this way," Oak replied. "All of you, follow me into my lab."Jetta followed behind the group, who were yapping at each other about who was going to get which pokémon. If she had to put up with bickering like that every day, she knew she'd go crazy. Professor Oak must've had a lot of patience. Especially to deal with Soloman; it was clear who he was, because the other guy was a smart-talker, so he must've been the one whose e-mail subject was truncated. Soloman was all about how he should get first choice, and how there'd be trouble if Professor Oak didn't have the right pokémon. A real rotten exeggcute. "Now, now, everyone will get to choose, and if you can't decide who gets what fairly, none of you will get anything," Oak told the trio. Jetta smirked. She'd be exactly the same way if she was in the professor's shoes. "You can't do that!" Soloman shouted. "I can do whatever I like in my laboratory," Oak replied, not even batting an eyelid. "Those are the rules."Everyone followed the professor up to a circular, metal stand at the edge of the lab, which had three pokéballs sat on it, behind a glass shield. "Please, Professor, I'd like a squirtle," Petra said. "Hey, I get to choose first!" Soloman barked. "I want the charmander!""Ah, this suits us quite well, as I decided on bulbasaur," the third trainer said. Jetta couldn't remember his name, no matter how hard she tried. It was Frank or... Finch or something. She couldn't remember which. "That's all very well," Oak said, "but the person who should be first to decide is Jetta."

~* Jetta Moon ~* "Me?" Jetta asked. "Her?" Soloman grunted. "Yes. Jetta was the first to inform me she'd be coming today. Reginald, you were second, Petra third, and Solomon, you're lucky I allowed you to come today, seeing as we were already booked up with three trainers," Oak explained. Jetta wrapped a finger up in her hair and put it to her mouth nervously. She didn't like the way the other three trainers were looking at her. Now she had to decide which of the three of them she could most risk upsetting. Whichever pokémon she decided on, the trainer who'd already announced their interest in it would be very unhappy. "Does this mean that one of the three of us will go without a pokémon?" Jetta enquired. "As a matter of fact, no. I was prepared for this eventuality; I've been in touch with a few of my peers and a couple have some starter pokémon available for transfer to me today. So, rather than having the usual three - bulbasaur, charmander and squirtle - to choose from, the three of you are in the lucky position where you may choose one of those three, or one of chikorita, mudkip, or chimchar. If you three loudred had given me chance to explain that, you'd have known," Oak answered. "In that case I'd like to revise my choice," Reginald said. Must've been his surname that began with an F, because Jetta was sure that... "Jetta?" Oak asked. Jetta stepped forward unsurely and looked up at the computer screen on the wall, which displayed all of the pokémon that were on offer. She'd half decided on a fire type earlier, owing to Gooper's weakness to grass, which would mean a choice between charmander and chimchar. And if Solomon so desperately wanted a charmander, perhaps chimchar would be the best option. "It's a tough choice, I understand," Oak said sunnily. "I don't know which I would pick for myself, if I were in your shoes.""Mmm," Jetta nodded. "I think I'd like a chimchar to be my pokémon.""I see. And you're sure?" Oak asked. Nice as a chikorita would be, Jetta was sure that a chimchar would be the best addition to her team. She only hoped that it would like her as much as Gooper did. She nodded her head sternly. "Very good. I'll have Professor Rowan's lab send it over shortly. First things first, though, Reginald? You were saying about revising your choice?""I was, but further calculations show my first choice would be more beneficial in the long run," Reginald said. "Bulbasaur is my choice.""Squirtle!" Petra blurted, as soon as Reginald's decision was voiced. "Okay, okay," Oak said, handing out the pokéballs to the trainers. "And you, Solomon? I assume you're going to stick with charmander?""Of course. It's the best of the bunch," Solomon chuckled, picking the ball up. "The best by far."

~* Jetta Moon ~* Once they had their pokémon the three trainers thanked the professor and ran off, seemingly eager to start their journeys. That left Jetta in the lab with only Professor Oak, who had walked over to a fancy machine at the back of the room mumbling to himself. "...only wish I were mistaken but they're definitely becoming more petulant as the years go by...four trainers in one day, I can't believe that Solomon...somebody should teach him a lesson in pokémon training...if I weren't likely to get arrested I'd bring out my legendary... Oh! Jetta! I'm sorry, I'm becoming a little absent minded as I age. Come here and I'll see if I can't introduce you to Professor Rowan," Oak said. Jetta felt a little awkward, hearing all those things the professor was saying. She headed over to the back of the room anyway, and made like she hadn't heard a thing. "Professor Rowan's based in the Sinnoh region, right?"Oak nodded confirmation. "Yes, the starters there are turtwig, chimchar and piplup. Am I correct that you chose a fire type because you already have a water type?""Mm," Jetta confirmed. "How did you know?""Because you told me, of course!" Oak laughed. Jetta thought for a minute that the professor had figured it out just from looking at her, but then she remembered that she'd explained about already having Gooper, as she wasn't sure that she could get a starter if she already had a pokémon. It's not exactly a starter if you don't get it first, after all. "I'd forgotten all about that. Seems like a week ago.""It was a week ago," Oak laughed again. "Oh," Jetta chuckled awkwardly. She watched as Professor Oak tapped on the keyboard of the machine, connecting to Sinnoh's Pokémon Laboratory. When the call was finally answered it was by a gruff-voiced, moustachioed old man. "Ah, Professor Oak. I take it one of those new trainers of yours has shown an interest in taking this chimchar as their starter pokémon.""She has indeed. Professor Rowan, this is Jetta Moon. She's come from Hoenn to start her pokémon journey here in Kanto," Oak explained. "Nice to meet you," Jetta bowed to the computer screen. "Very good. It's nice to meet you too. I don't suppose you're a relation of Command Pilot Wendy Moon and Submariner Captain Marlon Moon by any chance?" Rowan enquired. Jetta's stomach tightened a little. "Uhm... yes. They're my parents.""I see. In that case I'd be glad to give you this chimchar. Professor Oak, I'm ready at this end," Rowan said. Professor Oak flicked a switch and a notification popped up on the screen. "All set.""Transferring now," Rowan replied. A second later, the transfer device next to the screen flashed with yellow sparks and the faint outline of a pokéball appeared on a metal plate.

Glint followed Oak into the Lab, down a corridor and into a big room at the back of the building. There were all sorts of fancy machines in there - though the room still had a homely feel to it - and Glint recognised one that could help Gruff. He hurried over to it, with Professor Oak more ambling than anything else. "Any chance we can get on with this?" "First you'll have to present the parcel you've brought," Oak said. Glint had forgotten again. It wasn't usually his thing to forget, but it'd been a pretty crazy few days--and a pretty crazy few minutes, too. "Sorry. Here," Glint said, sort of leaning his hip out so that Oak could untie the string for himself. The professor opened the package up and took a metal rod from inside. He then proceeded to approach the machine that could heal Gruff and screw the rod into a hole. Turned out it was a handle. "Broke the previous handle! This one will do nicely," Oak explained. "Now here, let me see your growlithe."

- Kai Izumi - Looking around the laboratory as Glint spoke to the Professor, Kai idly inspected the various gadgets and machines for Pokémon research, as well as noticing how many various books and documents on Pokémon they had lying around. He had heard that Oak was probably the authority on Pokémon- so supposedly he had to keep quite up to date with goings on his field, so all this research lying around was probably his- both ongoing and completed. Looking over as they fixed the machine, Kai noticed it looked similar to ones they had in Pokémon centres- as he had guessed, it seemed to be exactly that. As Growlithe was healed, Kai made his way closer to the two older gentlemen, effectively coming into the Professor's view. "Oh? And who might you be?" Oak asked, only realising that someone else had entered his laboratory at this point, as he was so fixated on Glint and his delivery, as well as making sure Gruff was healthy once more. "Kai Izumi, sir. I travelled here from Viridian with Glint. To, well, actually meet you. I'm a newly starting trainer, you see." the boy spoke as calmly as he could, as well as politely as he could First impressions were important, after all. "A new trainer, eh? I've seen and set some of those along the same path only recently. But any time to start an adventure is a good one, I say! So you're from Viridian then? Do you perhaps need a Pokémon to start your journey with? As nice as Glint was to offer to escort you here, you can't be traversing routes without one.""No need, I actually have a Pokémon.. and although I came from Viridian, I'm not actually form there. Or Kanto in general, in fact." "How nice. Good to hear you're prepared, then. So where are you from then, Kai?""Sandgem Town, in Sinnoh." "Sandgem... that's where Rowan works, isn't it?" "Yes, it is. Although I've never actually met him in person... though I think he was the one who gave my parents my first Pokémon, Turtwig.""A Turtwig? Fascinating creature. You're probably right in your theory- Rowan tends to give people such a Pokémon... he helped give one of the recently starting trainers the fire type equivalent, Chimchar, in fact." "Really? I hope they're doing well.""Me too, my boy." Oak said with a smile, appreciating the kids outward honesty and friendliness. The youth of today seemed to be getting more and more spoilt and pushy, so it was a refreshing change of pace. "So apart from meeting me in person, is there anything in particular I can help either of you two with?" Professor oak said as an open question, asking both Kai and Glint.

Glint focussed on the machine and getting Gruff healed while Oak and Kai met. At first he felt a little guilty for not introducing the boy, but then he hadn't even introduced himself. His primary concern had to be getting Gruff back to full health rather than formalities. Thankfully with a little spray of super potion Gruff's injured back looked to be feeling much better. He jumped down to the floor and sat down happily, looking up to Glint to confirm that he was fighting fit. "Gruff ruff." "Phew," Glint sighed. He crouched and gave Gruff a stroke, then looked up and listened in on Oak and Kai's conversation. A new trainer with a chimchar... that sounded familiar. "You're talking about Jetta Moon, right, Professor?" "That's right," Oak replied. "I take it you've met?" "Yeah, in Viridian Forest. A boy had abandoned a zangoose in a cave with an underground lake. It had attracted some seviper, and they'd spat poison into the water, which was affecting the plants and wildlife on the surface." "Well that sounds terrible! We have to--" "No, it's okay, I sorted it. Well, Jetta and I, with some help from a suicune," Glint interrupted. "A suicune? I doubt that, Glint," Oak laughed. "So would I, but Jetta's pokédex recorded it. It fell from her pocket and recorded it. I tried to chase it down and record it for myself but it was too fast. It was gone before I could even see it, if I'm honest," Glint explained. "Well that is astonishing. I'll have to contact Eusine and let him know..." Oak said. He turned away and looked as if he was about to rush off to the videophone straight away. "Uh, Professor?" Glint said, standing up. "Uh, 'The Legendary Pidgey'?" "Oh! Yes! Of course!" Oak laughed, turning back to his guests. "There's a pidgey, I believe it was nesting in Viridian Forest, causing all sorts of trouble. Well, it seems its flock finally had enough of it and chased it off. Well now it's running amuck. There have been reports of it attacking trainers all over the region. It seems to come and go as it pleases, causing some quite terrible damage as it rampages." Glint had trouble grasping what the professor was saying. "But... a pidgey?" "I understand your doubt, but my research suggests that this is an incredibly ambitious little pokémon. It seems to have been involved in thousands of battles, and probably won them all, even against electric pokémon. It is a ferocious little thing, with a lot of pent up anger. When it first arrived in the area I tried to reason with it - talk to it and befriend it - but I soon learned that, for the moment at least, it is beyond talking to. It has a lot of tension to work out, and it appears it can only do that by attacking anything that comes near to it. I developed a sonic emitter, that I'll send copies of to major cities, to keep it at bay, but you'd best be careful. There's no knowing when, where or who it might attack next!"

- Kai Izumi - "Legendary Pidgey... that's what it was..?" Kai repeated, quietly, taking this new development in. He knew that Pidgey were apparently Kanto's version of Sinnoh's Starly- a common and mostly harmless bird. But this one seemed to be almost absurdly strong. However, with Oak's tale of it's possible origins and its almost continuous aggression, Kai couldn't help but feel sympathetic and bad for the creature. Sure, it might be powerful, but that doesn't mean it couldn't get lonely... which was possibly why these atacks were happening in the first place; probably some outlet for its own strife. "Well I'll certainly be on the look out for it... I don't think I could take it on so I doubt I'd try to, but maybe I could try to calm it- just a little. I wouldn't like to be in Pidgey's place and forced away by everyone else, after all..."Oak considered this new view on things, smiling. "You're probably correct, Kai. Pidgey tend to keep in flocks, so our legendary variation is most likely the same- being alone would probably cause it stress. Though it could just be a trickster- you never know, but it certainly is fascinating."Kai nodded, looking over at Gruff and confirming that Glint's canine creature was healthy. It seemed he was, so that was good. However, Kai still had some things to say to the professor yet. "Professor, where exactly would you suggest I start my journey? Or at least, what gym I should begin with." "Hm... A good question." Oak considered, stroking his chin. "The most common place to start is in Pewter City, to the north of Viridian. You could also go south and start at Cinnabar Island if you prefer being a bit unorthodox, though you'll need some sort of transportation over water to get there."Kai wondered if he could use Shellos, though considering his size it was most likely impossible- the little guy would try his hardest to help out, no doubt, but he wouldn't be storng enough to ferry them both the whole way, probably. "Hmm... okay, I guess I begin in Pewter, then. Do you have a map or something I could perhaps use? I don't know any of the layout of Kanto and I'll probably get lost at some point, haha." Kai laughed, scratching the back of his head with a grin out of habit. "A Map? Sure, I think I have one spare laying around here..." Oak mentioned, going over to a cluttered desk and looking around, moments later grabbing a rolled up travelling map. "Here you go." Oak said with a smile, handing the map to Kai, who folded it neatly and put it in one of his jackets pockets. "Are you sure that's all you need? Many new trainers ask for all sorts... Pokéballs, potions, Pokédexes... though I don't think I have any spare Pokédexes to give out at this very moment, though.""No, it's quite alright. As much as I appreciate your offer, I think I'll be alright without. Lacking a Pokédex might be a bit challenging, but perhaps it'll just make it more important to learn about Pokémon myself, rather than depend on a device to tell me about it...? If that makes any sense.""Quite the silver lining... though it's almost admirable to think in such a way, I think.""Thank you." Kai said with a polite nod. It had been fun meeting the professor in person, but with the only questions on his mind answered, there was little point of stalling out Oak's or even Glint's time further. Looking over at Glint, Kai wondered if the older boy had any further business of his own, as well as one more detail. "So where are you headed now, Glint? Now you're done with your delivery. It seems I'm going up to Pewter, haha."

"We don't have any more plans in Pallet," Glint said in response to Kai. "In fact we don't have any plans at all. I fought Brock a couple of days ago, though, so I can show you the way there. It'd be cool if I could sit in and watch, even." "I thought you were focussed on breeding, Glint?" Oak asked, seeming a little confused. "Oh I am. But Brock said battling might help me learn, so I gave it a shot. I lost - he wiped the floor with me in all honestly - but it was enlightening," Glint replied. Then a thought came to mind. "Uh, wait. Sorry, Professor, but how did you know I'm a breeder?" "Oh come now, I know your grandparents. They help me with their studies sometimes," Oak answered. "Well yes, but--" "You think they wouldn't talk about you? Of course they do. And I think it's good that you're travelling and learning from gym leaders. The best way to learn is through practice! So go on, off with you both. I have work to do!"

- Kai Izumi - "Watch me take on gyms..?" Kai replied, a little taken aback. "My skills aren't very impressive yet.. but I'd be really happy if you had my back and were supporting me!" the boy gave a warm grin, pleased to hear he had already made a friend in Kanto he could travel with, for whatever length of time. As Oak began to show them the door, Kai had to mention one final thing before heading out the door. "Professor, you know Viridian's Gym Leader, don't you?""Gary? I should hope so, as he's my grandson. Why do you ask?""I hear he's not around most of the time... since you're close, could you maybe pass on a message to him for me? If you can, of course.""Oh? Well he's a bit of a wanderer, but I'll do my best. What's your message?""Tell him that I'll be challenging him and his gym as soon as I can and intend to give him the greatest challenge I can- and though I know that may not ensure me victory win, I'll be giving it my all and I hope we can have a fun battle regardless of who's the victor.""Interesting... well, I'll be sure to pass on your sentiments when I can. Best of luck in Pewter City and your adventure in Kanto, Kai!" Oak replied, waving out the boy as he made his way through the door of Oak's Lab and back to the streets of Pallet town.
