Year After Year

A long time ago a boy was in the park, crying because his father had just died. Only being five he didn't understand what it meant, but he knew his dad wasn't around anymore and his mother said he wasn't coming back anymore. It seemed like nothing would cheer him up until another boy saw him and dragged him into a game. The first forgot about his problems as they continued playing.

Every day after that the two met up at the park to play, however they always seemed to forget to exchange names. And then one day the second boy just didn't come. He had moved and the first never saw him again. But he didn't forget. The boy would spend all year drawing a paper lantern of one day he spent with the other and on the anniversary of his father's death he would release it and let it fly off into the night, hoping that one day his old friend will see it. Depression once again overtook his life and the only thing that kept him going was the lantern.

Then years later, when he's a teenager, he meets his old friend again, but a lot has changed between the two and neither realize it. They start getting very close and eventually fall in love. The first boy realizes this gave him a reason to live and he finds his life meaningful now. But he still releases the lanterns and one year invites his new friend to watch. How will they take the past?
