I'm currently repacking and reducing a lot of my stuff for my upcoming move. We're going to be living in our friends furnished one bedroom condo (no garage) for the following year. Most of our stuff will be in storage here in Ontario.

Since our friend has limited storage in her condo, we have to be very particular to what we bring. I like living "simple" regardless, but it's got me thinking of how much I can reduce. Unfortunately for me, I get attached to a lot of stuff: my laptops name is Walter, my camera is Pig and I saved the tag for my second hand sperm whale plush, Spermy (in the back), so it can be hard to get rid of some stuff.

A while ago, I read an article on Treehugger about a man who was going to reduce his life to 100 items. Granted, I didn't dig too deeply, but I wondered if my laptop, mouse (mouse + wireless hub) and mouse pad would be one item or three? Would the cats with toys, bowls, etc. be exempt? What about gardening stuff?

So - with spring in the air, have you done some stuff purging? How many items do you think you could live with? How many items do you estimate you have now? What items could you do without? How would you group your items? (For example - would my laptop with accessories be one item or would they all be individually counted?) Would you exempt items - like books, tools or jewelry?

YES, I sleep with a plush whale named Spermy and a plush orca named Willy, who coincidentally only has one eye. dramallama

I'd count "items needed to work" as one item- so my lap top, and it's cord to plug in the wall would be 1, but the head set wouldn't count as separate because it isn't needed for it to function.

I could replace all my books and my bookshelves with a Nook or Kindlel. I'd need a laptop and a printer. I can get buy and make a lot of good food with a single pot, a frying pan and a baking pan. I could use a grill and a campstove. I'd need two days worth of clothes- in layers and I'd count beds as 1, including the sheets and pillows.

My tough part would be my art supplies and alter pieces- both of them have a lot of specialized equipment. sweatdrop

I just moved from MA to FL and could only bring what would fit in 1 checked bag, 1 carry on, and 2 boxes (not counting the boxes that I shipped my fish and tortoise in, leaving them would be irresponsible. Also, one of those 2 was books+movies, not sure if they count.) Out of 21 years of stuff, I had to weed it all into that. It felt good.

I feel like it would be neat to do.. but at the same time for a lot of people it's not really necessary.
I purge my things every few months.. I'll go through the closet.. see a shirt with a stain that I never wear and I cut it into fabric scraps and put them into a box with other fabric. =]
I probably have around 1,000 items.. just the bathroom alone has to have around 100. >_<

There are a lot of things that I can't let go of in my life, when I move though.. that is another story.. I try to bring as little stuff as possible, just because moving into a new house shouldn't be about getting rid of the junk, it should be about filling your house with the things that you love!~ heart

I had to get rid of a lot of my stuff when I moved across the state to go to school. The placed I moved to was a TON smaller than where I came from (which wasn't big to begin with.) Anyway, I found that in the smaller place I didn't need most of the stuff that I had. No need for table runners when you have a tiny table. No need for most of my rugs, lamps, or furniture. I ended up using most of my old clothes as packing materials. (Actually, I took all of my towels and t-shirts and used them to pack my dishes and other fragile stuff- really saved money and space.) I converted all of my CDs to digital files, and scanned most of my photos. I realized that much of my "stuff" was obsolete: boom box, land-line phone, Polaroid camera. They got boxed up and left in storage. I didn't even take my watches! It is amazing how much stuff you accumulate over the years. Some of the stuff that seemed so essential when I got it I realized I just hadn't really used in years.

I read about that guy! I think even he cheated a little (such as counting his library as one, instead of all the individual books--which I can totally understand, because I myself probably have over 100 books xd )

Since moving into my fiancé's parent's house last October, I've done a lot of downsizing. We went from a whole 2-bedroom house to put our stuff in, to a small 10x12 ft room for us an an equally sized room for our daughter (who has tons more stuff than we do). We've still bought a few things, and had things given to us, so it's become increasingly tighter in our little space. When we first moved, I stored away all the things I knew we wouldn't need (the kitchen supplies, appliances, furniture, my sewing machine--mom already has one--craft supplies, books I don't read often, Lily's outgrown toys and clothes--most of which have been given away to her baby cousin now--old computer cords and accessories, things like that) and I really haven't missed much of it, although every now and then I go dig through boxes because I just HAVE to have something. I managed to fit everything else into our tiny room, which our bed takes up most of. Since then, I've gotten tired of the clutter and weeded through all but our most sentimental/spiritual knicknacks, extra personal care products in the bathroom, books and magazines, extra notebooks and school supplies, and things like that and resigned them to the garage also. And ya know what? A lot of those things I thought I needed when we first moved in, I really don't miss right now. I'm not giving them up completely, because I'll certainly want them to decorate our apartment when we move, but I don't need them like I thought I did to feel comfortable in our little space. Our room is still a bit overcrowded, but it's certainly not bad, and it's given me quite the insight into how much I really need. I think when we move into our apartment I'll look critically at each thing we unpack, and have a huge garage sale with everything I'm not extremely attached to ^^

I heard a saying once that stuck with me: "If it's not useful, beautiful, or joyful, get rid of it."
