By spoilers, I mean I'm assuming that you either are familiar with the full back stories of the characters, even some of the stuff you had to go out of your way to ask about, or you're alright with it being spoiled for you. Basically, just please don't post: "Aaaagh!I didn't know that Sten had a traumatizing romantically-charged experience with his third cousin at Space Camp, you jerk!" (or something that actually happened, but is just about as trivial that only a really nerdy fan (like me emo ) would remember).
You have been warned!

But anyway, I can't be the only one to notice that the typical companion back story is so sad that it would make the protagonist of any Disney movie jealous. I guess it makes sense. You'd have to have next to nothing to lose to leave it behind to follow the Hero of Ferelden/Warden Commander/Champion of Kirkwall to almost certain death. But who's is the most depressing? For me, I can't decide between a few characters, so I'll give my top pick from each game.

Fenris from DA II is my top choice for obvious reasons. He was a slave in Tevinter, and his earliest memories are of the torture of having the lyrium burned into his skin. On top of that, his identity was created by Danarius. He eventually escaped, or not so much escaped as was taken in by a rebel group. But Danarius found Fenris and ordered him to kill them- and he obeyed. By the time Hawke finds him, he has been running and fighting for three years. And even though he seems to be coping too well given the circumstances, it becomes pretty apparent that he's hanging on by a thread.
It seems that every time Fenris gets a taste of freedom, or safety, or any kind of future, the facade comes crashing down around him.
His past literally chases him, he has a sister that makes Goldanna look like a saint, and he's scarred irreversibly in more ways than one.
Okay, pretty sad, Fenris, but we might be able to do better.

From Origins, I picked Zevran. It might come as a surprise because I don't think I've ever seen him express, sadness or anger, but if you ask him, he'll tell you with that same cocky grin that he never knew is father. His mother was a Dalish who followed her lover to the city, but he died shortly after, and with no way to support herself, she was forced to a life of prostitution. Zevran was born shortly after, his mother unsure whether the father was her late husband or a random client. Then, guess what, his mother died soon after, when Zevran was very young, and he was raised in the brothel with the other girls' sons. Then he was sold to the Crows when he was still a boy.
It seems that he likes being an assassin, but he has no fantasies about what it means. He knows that trying to leave means that he will be hunted and probably killed. He only goes with the Hero of Ferelden as a last pathetic attempt at staying alive a little longer. It just happens to work out for him. XD

My pick for Awakening (which I treated like a seperate game because it basically is) is Sigrun. Sigrun has possibly the most depressing back story of all of them, but in my opinion she was annoying and completely forgettable, and I never talked to her outside of her quest, so I only know the bare bones of her story.
Sigrun is a casteless dwarf who was part of the Legion of the Dead, a group of casteless warriors who, in theory, place no value on their lives since their culture already considers them dead/nonexistent. But when you find her, she's just escaped the deep roads after her patrol was attacked by darkspawn. When they attacked, she fled, branding her a coward and a traitor in her own mind by the rules of the Legion. All of her allies are either dead, or worse. The darkspawn dragged off some of her companions to be turned into broodmothers. Her only wish from this point on is to die fighting the darkspawn.
Pretty sad, but like I said, Sigrun is borrrringgg. :3

Feel free to nominate other characters. They don't have to be companions, I just picked companions because you learn the most about them.
I'll add a poll later if you guys make more suggestions.

And congratz to anyone who put up with my ramblings long enough to get even halfway through my wall of text! :3

I agree with you about Fenris. His story is almost heart crushing.

In Origins I'd have to say either Zevran or any of your wardens. Not one of them gets a happy begining. The dalish finds out that his/her parents were killed by humans, then gets tainted and loses his closest friend/love and is then jerked away from the only family he/she's ever known and will never see them again.

The city elves mother was killed for reasons I forget. Then fight off a rapist on their wedding day and the females fiancee gets murdered, they save the other woamen even though their cousin gets horribly raped, then basically get banished for defending their people.

The common dwarf is poor, has an angry drunk mother, her sister is forced to prostitute while she has to kill people for a living. Then...well you know how it goes so I don't think I'll explain them further than that, but you know what I mean righ. Its awful.

Of course I still have to play through awakening and all of that, but yeah.

I know many will disagree.. but I think Sten's story is sadden. When he explains how everyone has roles, which their given at birth. Imagine life without mystery and the Qunari are denied that. If you piece it together it works in their system but without the choice its like emptiness, robotic.
Other than that, Sten's other story, sent to a new region of the world, and in the beginning nearly killed by darkspawn. He survived his groups' slaughter (as the leader this should have shamed him), then lost his most precious thing to him, his sword. On top of that he's very different emotionally and practically alone in features. Everyone thinks the first thing.. a monster.

As far as I've seen, pretty much everyone has something shitty happen to them. It's hard to pick the saddest.

backstories hm? hard to pick. let's break them all down

alistair's story is pretty sad, rejected by people raising him, an orphan who's always reminded he doesn't belong where he is.

for origins the main character's starting stories are in some cases just plain heartbreaking. the mage gets betrayed by his only friend and gets taken away from his/her only home or faces death.

dwarven noble gets betrayed by family and wrongfully accused and left to die, while the commoner just has a s**t life trying to protect his sister.

Ohgren's is...sorta sad...not really

wynne is wracked with guilt over a student and knows she's living on borrowed time.

leliana has a sad past if you play the leliana's story dlc.

zevran's been mentioned..nuff said..tough breaks.

sten can;t return home becuase he's disgraced himself...hard for us to see as the saddest but for him he might as well be dead.

the elf stories are sad as hell, especially when there's rape and murder.

human noble is incredibly sad too. you lose pretty much all your friends and family in one night due to the betrayal of what you thought was a trusted friend, even being forced to leave your parents to die.

awakening:

anders ...the mage's have tough breaks ok? not much to say. his story doesn;t become sad until DA2

Justice ...not much to say..not really a sad past.

sigrun ...yeah I found no interest in her I guess her story's sad though.

velanna's sister is kidnapped and seperated from her and she's split up from her clan. pretty sad.

nathaniel howe comes back home being part of a once respected family to find it has all been ruined, his entire family blamed for one man's actions, the actions of a man he once loved and respected.

DA2:

anders - .....omg....wtf happened to you anders? you...you're not the comedy relief anymore? noooooo why anders whyyyy? and when did you suddenly become bi?

aveline - she has to leave her husband to die..yeah..pretty sad.

fenris - fenris' past is screwed up ok? I wouldn't vote no against his being the saddest...but some stories do come close.

Isabela - not much sadness except for the lost husband that turned her away from

sebastian - his story's much like the human noble's story. seems almost everyone must know tragedy in DA.

Hawke - at worst, he loses his sibling and mother. when hawke loses his mother that scene is just heart breaking isn't it? I mean come on...I cried... I replied just to see if there were any sidequests I could do to make sure it didn't happen.

varric is a dwarven exile who loses his brother..not the saddest but worth a mention

and my nominee for saddest story:

Merril. she is rejected by her only family and even hated, despised, and eventually has to murder everyone she holds dear (except hawke). she's naive and gentle and yet she goes through some of the most heartbreaking revelations. it's only because of hawke and varric that she remains sane. sure fenris may be seen as more traumatic, but he's also much stronger than merril, merril is fragile while fenris just uses his pain to forge his anger and fight. there are people who lose their whole family, merril is forced to slaughter hers or die, all because she was trying to help them and was tricked by a demon. for your consideration.

Is it me or is Bioware on a tragic kick? And I almost forgot about poor Merril. I did bawl when Hawke lost his/her mom in that one quest. Thats just awful. I still cry if I see it. Seriously whi does that to someone crying

Saddest Story in Dragon Age 2:Anders..He's become so warped up in freedom for mages that he is driven to the brick of madness at the chaos of Kirkwall's Knight-Commander. He also is battling Justice and is slowly losing himself as Justice begins to take more control over him.

Saddest Story in Dragon age Origins..Zevran poor boy never knew his mother or his father.Sold to a group of assassins and raised to turn his heart to ice never really being able to experience of "Making love" with "Love"

Saddest Story in Awakening..Velanna,Exiled from her clan because she wanted to know the truth behind her sister's disappearance. Upon being reunited with her sister she loses her again. Her sister being her only family drives her to "leave the Wardens" to seek her sister once again and we have no idea if she ever succeed

Why does bioware seem to love sad back stories? It's already been said all of the back stories of the DA universe but all of their games seem to have it.

KotOR- Mission is an orphan with a deadbeat brother living on a wretched hive world, that is destroyed. Carth lost his wife and hime to his mentor and his son turns to the sith. Zaalbar is banished from his home because of his traitorous brother and knows his people are being sold to slavery. Canderous has given up on his people ever having a future. Jolee's wife, who he trained against Jedi teachings, turned to the dark side and killed a lot of people because he couldn't kill her. Juhani's world was destroyed, her father was killed, her mother died trying to take care of her, was almost sold into slavery and turns to the dark side after she thinks she kills her mentor. Bastila, while not having an especially sad story does have the typical Jedi separation from family thing, is tortured until she gives into the dark side. The only exception are the two robots on the team.

Jade Empire- The PC's people were slaughtered by the Empire and their hometown is destroyed. Dawn Star has the same lose of home as the PC not to mention finds out her father is a complete sociopath. Sky loses his wife to childbirth and his daughter to slavers. Black Whirlwind had to kill his brother. Wild Flower died and is now hosting a benevolent spirit and a demon in her body. Sagacious Zu was a member of Lotus Assasins and is guilt ridden after killing your mentor's family. Silk Fox, while not having a tragic past, does find out over the course of the game that her father is a megalomaniac and everything she knows about him is a lie. Abbot Song can't move on to the afterlife and has to watch his people fight and die countless times because they were unable to protect the water dragon. Henpecked Hou has a manipulative monster of a wife. The secret follower has a god awful story but going into the details is too spoilerific. The only possible exception is Kang the Mad.

Mass Effect would just take too long to recount all the sad stories of the characters but I think we can all see the pattern at this point.

In Origins the saddest for me would actually be playing as a dwarven noble. Your character couldn't catch a break no matter what and forced to fight their own family.

II I found Fenris and Meryl to have really sad stories, Meryl I'll talk more about since Fenris has been done but it really is sad to see someone who was so innocent be shunned practically for her curiosity and ignorance rather then properly taught and taken care of by those responsible for her.

Awakening I would agree Sigrun was really sad but she was a very forgettable after thought in the game apart from her origin.
