Howl opened the door, looking as if he'd been expecting someone. When he spotted Kali, his face fell, clearly disappointed, before he noticed something about his apprentice and redheaded best friend. She was crying. He quickly moved to embrace her.
He pulled her inside, not quite sure how to handle a crying woman. Normally his first impulse was to run and hide. Not so much with Kali, but the question remained. What was he supposed to do with her? What was he supposed to do, when crying women showed up at his door?
"Come on," he said. "I have ice cream, cookies, hot chocolate--anything you want. Tell me everything. What happened?" If it had been Lance... well. The non-magical no good, useless lump of a man--let's just say he would end up being something even more useless than Howl already found him to be.

Kali really wasn't sure what she'd been expecting from Howl. Not much, clearly, as she was shocked when he hugged her, and invited her inside. She knew she should have gone to Lance, but Lance was at work - and going to see him while throwing a fit would get him fired. She had at least enough sense to see that.
So as Howl embraced her, her tears came faster, and she sobbed into his shoulder, gripping him in what may very well have been a bone crushing hug.
"Z-zak...t-tried...and then he..." She hiccuped. "I di-idn't even get a chance to! He just...oh my GOD." Rather uselessly, she stumbled into Howl's house, starting to hyperventilate ever so slightly. She could feel snot starting to come out her nose and - oh, ******** everything. She covered her face in shame and sobbed.

Howl offered her a box of tissue, settling down on the couch. "Kali, it's okay," he said, feeling rather useless. He didn't know what to do! Calcifer was usually the one (ironically) to deal with crying people. "I'll turn him into a toad, if you like. Or something worse." He pulled her into a hug, petting her hair. Now that he was taller than she was, he supposed he could at least attempt to comfort her.
"Kali, listen," the wizard summoned a large icecream sundae, dripping with chocolate sauce and a candied cherry sitting at the very top. "Calm down. We can't... We can't plot revenge while you're like this, can we?" Alright, so maybe plotting revenge wasn't the best way to comfort a crying, pregnant woman.
But it sure had worked for Sophie.
