what is your band magic moment? mine is when our director was talking to us about being able to succeed and that we could get a one at contest while our best trumpet player was taking a smart music test over 'Song of Hope' and we could hear it and it was the perfect music to go with our directors inspirational speech. Magic Moment right there

I really don't know if this counts as a magic moment, but it's a real moment alright.
Okay soooooo, I'm from the land of cheese_whine and farming (On, Wisconsin, on, Wisconsin!) and we've got a saxaphonist from Kansas in our band. Well, he'd been talking about how KANSAS was going to win this, and KANSAS was going to take heaven knows who down. Well one day, in the midst of this kid doing one of his speeches on Kansas, the band director stood up, looked him straight in the eye, and said, "I AM OFFICIALLY BANNING THE "K" WORD IN THIS CLASS. I WILL GIVE YOU A DETENTION IF YOU KEEP CUSSING IN CLASS!" He hasn't said it since.

This is more coincidental than magical, but close enough!
Anyway, for our Christmas concert, we were going to play Holst's First Suite in Eb, and everyone was kind of on edge about it because we kept taking out, replacing, and taking out the second movement over and over again. So on the way to the concert that night, my boyfriend and his neighbor were driving to the school, and on the classical station, they started to play the Suite. It was just kind of perfect, and everyone loved it that night.

A real band moment will be when the whole band is playing and the sound is, oh, so beautiful, you feels shivers go down your spine as you play, and feel a sweeling your heart at the beauty of the piece you are playing and you are going, 'hey, I'M playing this. ME.' Now THAT is a magic band moment.

idk if this is the kind of magic moment you were talking about, but we were at winter champs, and the huge gym was so crowded we all had to sit on the floor because we (the guard) were the last competitor and then we had to take pics and fold the floor and whatnot. so we go in, and of course the announcer is calling them super slow to build suspense cuz its champs or some bs like that. and, of course they call the DL awards first, then the guard ones, and of course both our DL and guard are in freaking OPEN which is the highest, therefore LAST to be called...anyways so we FINALLY get through the dl awards and ours got 1st!! (not champions, but 1st) they hadn't started out so well cuz no one understood wtf the theme was...including the dl members...anyways then we FINALLY go through the guard ones, and lemme explain. there was us (benicia), vallejo, laguna creek, and armijo in open. so if they weren't going to give out a last place, there should have been 2nd, 1st, and champs right? well there was just 1st and champs. and laguna creek got 1st........... then armijo got champs. then all us seniors started crying. but oddly, not cuz of the score. our coach told us after the comp that we'd had our best show of the season. and there've been some years she couldn't say that. but my favorite moment was when i hugged the tympani player, tim (yes, tim plays TIMpani haha) who has played tympani in dl for 4 years, and i've been one of the tympani pushers EVERY YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL. so i hugged him and told him i'd miss pushing the tympanis for him and he started actually crying...someone later said more like sobbing...and then all 4 of the 4-year dl member guys all hugged each other, and 2 of them supposedly weren't crying (yeah right).... but anyways, i thought that was kinda magical, what with really not caring about place and really understanding the whole its not about points its about how you feel you did thing, and about i'm actually going to miss the tympanis....even the big one with the wheel that falls off right as we're going into the gym...

This is a lot like une_pomme_verte's, except the opposite. we actually got the award lol.
So it was the university Band day last year. We had a great performance and were the band with the most of our show done, because it was still quite early in the season and bands around here dont usually complete their shows until a few weeks before the first comp, and this one was waaay too soon.
Anyway, so we were all pretty excited. We had a record of excellents at this competition. By the way, my state does ratings not rankings, and the lowest as this comp went participation, good, excellent, superior, some award i forgot the name of. So excellent is petty good, especially since this particular one was graded on a college level not a high school level like the state graded.
Awards comes along, and as our band is well known for, we start cheering and singing our fight song at the top of our lungs. We get other bands joining in and compete with who has most spirit. Like usual, our 60-80 person band overpowered every other band in the stadium, even the 100+ bands. Which was awesome in its own right.
We stop when the drum majors march onto the field. We listen as they call out goods. We aren't called. We get all excited, until they call out excellents. we weren't called. Everyone starts to get teary eyed. We all thought we got a participation. Before we had been kind of chatty, smiling and excited. suddenly, there were tears and nobody spoke or looked at anyone else. Even the director looked upset. We couldn't believe we had gotten aprticipation. We were better then that, so we thought. I remember juniors and sophomores trying to comfort the seniors and freshman; it was the first freshman competition, and the last band day for the seniors.
The announcer starts to call the first superior. annoyingly, they hold it out as long as possible. Everyone in my band had the expression of "get it otu so we can go and forget this comp happened".
Our name was th first superior called that night.
We exploded. It was awesome seeing my band so energized, so close. If someone hadnt been crying about the participation, they were crying about the superior. Everyone had tears of joy in their eyes. We screamed so loud and so long that nobody could talk the bus ride home because our voices were shot. Our small band screamed so loud that even the other superior couldn't hear their names called. It was the best feeling ever. I really saw how close my band was that night, and how much we all meaned to eachother.
Just a note, when we got back to school that night(after our bus barely made it cause they sent us a crap one that stalled on a slope and nearly rolled into the car behind us, and then stalled again twice so we had to speed to keep it running scary times) our director found the last superior we had gotten at Band day. 1989. 20 years ago exaclty. We were the best we had been in 20 years. It made our year.

We were the best we had been in 20 years. It made our year. im in a high school band and we kinda mix the rankings and ratings but anyway, that definately sounds awesome... our band used to be theabsolute best in the state but a couple years ago it was so bad that nobody really cared about our band. my freshman year was our bands lowest point but we decided that we werent going to be last anymore so now we are rebuilding our band and the way its looking we will get 1/superior my senior year if we continue our hard work which would be completely awesome if the first year we're superior was my senior year

My band director handed us some new sheet music, and he was telling us the story behind it. It was The Inferno, part of the Divine Comedy. So he was telling us about how the Inferno was about Hell. I'm the oboist, so I had the beginning solo. Once I was finished trying to sight read that, he said "That's what I call Hell!" Not exactly magical, though.

My band magic moment would be whenever we get a break in marching band and I just lie down in the grass and look straight up into the sky. Just staring at the sky is just so peaceful and relaxing regardless of the time of day. It's not exactly unique, but it'll definitely be one of the things that I remember when I graduate from high school and don't play in marching band anymore (sadly, I doubt I can fit it into a college schedule sweatdrop ).
